The title is somewhat misleading. For most of his career, when he played left back, one of the things Maldini was known for was his perfectly timed sliding tackle. So, no, he did not refuse to tackle, quite the opposite: tackling was one of his main strengths. The "legend" about Maldini not making tackles stems from an interview from Sir Alex Ferguson, who said that Maldini could go an entire game without having to make a single tackle, meaning he had by then (it was 2007) achieved such an amazing tactical awareness that he commanded the defense simply by positioning himself in the right place.

IKR, some people don't use actual "meaning" as they cannot relate to it. If you can tell them that when you jump, you're performing a triple backflip, because they don't assign the meaning of what a triple backflip is, they don't differentiate what it is vs a jump. In their mind both a jump and a triple backflip will be the same thing. Why, because psychology is great.

Maldini was certainly a class act. He also had the luxury of playing in a league and a team awash with superb defenders. When you have confidence in your defensive players and team set-up, at club and country level. You can focus on perfecting your game in both tiers. So, it was the solid core of CB's that allowed him to roam the flanks and show his pace and attacking flair. As he got older he became the complete defender and his role playing in a defensive midfielder, depending on role/formation. So, yeah a true indication of his class is his adaptability.

Maldini was also blessed to play right beside Baresi, Costacurta and Tassotti. Learning from tactical masterminds like Arrigo Sacci or Giovanni Trapattoni.
Him and Baresi were the perfect examples of what i consider Italian football culture.... intelligent defenders that are hard, proud but fair....early indoctrinated by the classic Italian love of tactics and holding the 0.
Absolutely loved the Seria A in the eighties and nineties with a multitude of legends....Inter Milan with Lothar Matthäus, Jürgen Klinsmann, Nicola Berti, Andreas Brehme....
AC Milan with Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Tassotti, Van Basten, Gullit etc
Juventus Turin with Roberto Baggio....AC Milan...Inter Milan....AC Parma....AS Rom and Lazio......it was everything the Premier League thinks to be.
