Great idea and excecution but I'm a bit wary about the sand settling, especially since the door swings so much and will vibrate the sand so it settles. That way a gap will form at the top of each of those compartments creating an acoustic leak. Thoughts?
Good point! I don’t really know how you could avoid that other than packing it as best as possible and then putting upright and filling any possible gaps. I personally don’t use this method so it has drawbacks.
@@soundproofyourstudio Maybe mix the sand with watered down pva glue or something and let it dry inside the compartments before closing the door up? But then if that works you could look at things like concrete too I reckon.
What about just sandwiching like three layers of drywall between the plywood? Put loaded vinyl between the sheets to dampen vibrations with one sheet of vinyl spanning each side between the drywall and the plywood to be prevent sounds bridging through the cross race where the door handle goes. Dunno. Just a question. I think it would be simpler and would need less crossbracing where vibrations can leak through like the studs in your wall.
I wonder if a mix of concrete with samd and polystyrene filler to reduce the weight to make it a required weight would be as effective and reduce the issue of moisture in the sand and any risk you might one day have a door that explodes sand where :p
@@MajestyStudioProyou use led shot or sand in speaker stands the stop the vibrations & make them more dense. A sand filled door would be more dense & thus be better. But! You can do the same with rockwool & double drywall & its a lot lighter. No point having a door that stops more sound than the walls. Better off having a floating floor.
@@Maradnus I read once about the moisture that remains in the sand. you have to cook it out etc. I also had the same idea but did not want to waste my time, if I have to remove the door after a year or so because of molt development.
@@MajestyStudioPro I built a studio room a while back & we too thought about sand lining the walls. & you are right the possible moisture was a HUGE issue for us. The money we saved on kiln dried sand we built a floating floor. This was a shell of a building BTW. In the UK we have a Pink drywall/plasterboard that is fire proof & acoustic rated 2 layers of that on a rockwool slab door was incredible. 150db in the room & maybe 50 on the other side of the door.
Please please love the channel but it's very hard for a European to follow if you don't translate pounds and inches into kilos and cm. If you would calculate this for us it would make it so much easier. Thanks 🙏🙌
I hate to say it but if converting metrics is the hard part for you then building something like this would absolutely be too challenging for you. Converting metrics is a pre planning step, not even step 1

You could try it! Mass is key at the end of the day.
You want kiln dried sand ideally as otherwise you could start getting rot after a while. ;)

No db reduction numbers? Between open outside the door and closed with pink noise ?

what about the moisture in the sand? do you cook the sand or dry it out completely?
You just need to get it as dry as possible. Leaving it in the sun on a sheet would work well.

What is the weight of the door per/m2?
You can figure that by adding the total weight of the wood plus the sand. Each door will be different depending on your entryway.

Yes, I am now working on doing that more. I design many studios in metric these days so I am getting way more comfortable with the metric system.
