Great test of the ECM-G1! My use case is what you tested @ 7:00 with you talking behind the camera and the waterfall in front. The ECM-G1did better than I thought and had a nice, natural balance between the waterfall sound in front and your voice in the background.
Awesome! I’m glad the test could be of use to you!!!👍I tried to make it as fair as possible, but sometimes it’s hard with these different price points.🤦🏽♂️
Your comment about super-cardioid vs cardioid is super important! Thank you for showing this. I vlog the exact same way as you so this is very helpful.
Thank you!!! Yes a lot of people don’t address that. I think it’s an important part of the microphone selection process when you’re trying to make a decision.
Nice test, thanks for doing the behind the camera comparison. I use the Deity D3 duo for that reason but it's even bulkier than the videomicro. I have now moved to a Sony a6700 and after this I am probably going to get the ECM-G1 for the size, cable free hassle free use. Thanks again for the review.
Super helpful test. I have a Sony ZV-1 and a Rode VideoMicro. I have found that the VideoMicro with a dead cat on it sometimes shows up in my shot when it bobbles around. The ECM-G1 sounds great. I’m definitely adding it to my wishlist.
Adding that the VideoMicro sounded really good in your studio, but agreeing with you that the ECM-G1 works better in the field. Especially for situations where you want to interview someone from behind the camera.
Thank you, glad it could help. Yes I had that problem also with the dead cat while using the ZV-1. Only reason I don’t have it now while using the Rode Videomicro is due to me using my Ulanzi wide angle lens adapter, which extends the lens out further therefore keeping it from being close to the dead cat.
Also yeah it was hard admitting the Rode Videomicro sounded better in the studio… lol, but I got to keep it real. I honestly only do videos, because these are the videos I wish someone would’ve done for me, testing the things we really need to know about to make a money wise decision…
Good question. Out of all 3 mics the ECM-G1, B10, B1M, the only one that can do what you’re asking is the G1. The G1 has a 3.5 mic input so you can mount it anywhere besides the multi-interface shoe. Now as for the audio recording quality, well you won’t have the range, and sound fullness you would have with other shotgun mics. Plus if that’s your intended use, there’s probably better options on the market.
@@bryanbuff for sure. I'm currently working on a video on the B1M, and yes there's a sound quality difference between all three mics, but depending on what your needs are will dictate what's needed to achieve the audio quality you desire.
Quick update. Been on a couple of road trips with the g1. That super Cardio polar pattern is sweet ! Put a small rubber band in the shock mount ... ta-da ! problem solved. This mic isn't for professionals, but it's fantastic for us home video guys. And you my friend, have a new subscriber!
Thank you so much Rick T. I appreciate it so much..but you’re right it’s not a professional mic but it’s better than onboard audio and it’s plug and play.
I had a similar problem with the shock mount making noise on the VideoMicro. I found out the notches on the tightening ring are meant to hold the cord. By adding tension to the shock mount, there is no knocking sound. I can’t really tell how you have it set up because you are obviously using it while recording, but that might help someone else in the future.
Both mics are great but for different scenarios. Rode is for the vlogger who has his face in the video all the time or for just talking in studio. If youre a landscape vlogger where you talk behind the camera then the G1 is better. The sony ZV-1 built-in microphone is better than the rode for landscape vlogging as noticed in the water fall scene. Great video thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much, I’m really glad that it could be of assistance to you. I try to make videos to address the questions that most people have but never get mentioned in videos.. lol
Thanks for providing the information in this video. Much appreciated. I just purchased ZV-1M2, and the onboard mic isn't the best sound quality. I was looking for a video that gives the sound when working behind the camera for the ECM-G1. Your video video provided a good example with the waterfall and voice. I have had the same experience with a similar mic as the Rode mic where the shock mount vibration is picked up, It is very frustrating to hear the tap tap tap sound from the mic mount in post-production.
Thanks for the info., and Very well done video. I'm the family photo/video guy. I shoot birthdays, holidays, and travel. I have the a 6400... Love the videos and photos! Can't dial in the audio with the onboard mic terrible sounding... most likely operator error. That makes the auto feature on the g1 even more valuable to me. this is the perfect set it, and forget it mic. HUGE UPGRADE ! oh yeah, put a small rubber band in the shock mount.
I feel the same way about trying to set the audio settings.. lol. Most of my bad sounding audio is user error… lol. Now I use my G1 on my Fdr-Ax53 which is a camcorder, but it serves a specific need for my shooting senerio. I use to use it on my FX3 until I started using the xlr shotgun microphone. The g1 is a simple upgrade for audio that far surpasses the onboard audio.
Awesome video ! Little question how is the G1 with handling noise and wind noise with the dead cat on, I was concerned that you might hear it rattle about when your moving around ?
Thanks!!! Honestly it does a good job of dampening wind noise. Probably not as well as the Rodevideo micro, with it’s dead cat on, but it will give you useable audio for sure.👍
Thanks bro, I appreciate that… 😀 but to be fair, I’m not as consistent with the content as I should be due to my other channel I have. But I do really value your kind words for sure.👊🏾
Going to be honest with you I think the video micro sounded better then the sony mic. Beside when you spoke behind it beside the water fall. But I do not know if I could justify an extra 100$ for the gc1. I am getting the zv1 mark 2 and was curious about this very thing. Good video ty
Yeah it’s crazy you said that, because I think I also mentioned in the video that there’s sometimes the Videomicro at least to my ears sounded better than the G1. I try to be 100% transparent with my reviews and sometimes finding out a piece of equipment has flaws stings a bit. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate that.
Well ECM-G1 is more budget friendly, and has a more universal camera application. As for sound quality, it depends on what you’re looking for. If it’s sound rich, fullness, this may not be the mic for you. The ECM-B10 or B1M could be the one, only if your Sony camera is compatible with it.
We’ll base off specs alone the MKE200 also has the Omnidirectional polar pickup pattern whereby the G1 only has super-cartiod. I think it really comes down to users needs. Do you want to record the voice and it’s surroundings? Or do you want a more directional recording ability that reduce outside interference. Now I can’t speak on the sound quality being recorded of the MKE200. Cost wise MKE200 is more budget friendly, but again I don’t know if that comes at the cost of audio quality.
Great test of the ECM-G1! My use case is what you tested @ 7:00 with you talking behind the camera and the waterfall in front. The ECM-G1did better than I thought and had a nice, natural balance between the waterfall sound in front and your voice in the background.

Thank you for a thorough breakdown and sample! This was very helpful

Hey Yongmin!!! So glad it could be of assistance!!!👍
This definitely helped me make a purchase decision. Getting a G1 with a Sony ZV 1F! Thank you!
Glad it could be of use to you. I love the G1 and it would pair well with the ZV1F. 👍

Question - could either of these be mounted on top of a monitor and used as a shotgun mic for conference calls?

Pleasantly surprised by the G1. Picking it up today.
I think it’s a good choice, if you want something simple and effective for stepping up your audio game. 👍
@@lessonslearnedwithcameras1782 For sure. The ECM-B10 is obviously better, but I just need something easy and compact when I’m out and about.

I am… I use it more with my Sony FDR-AX-53 camcorder & Sony ZV1 mk1. It’s still in my line up.. lol.😁

The Sony Mike kills the Rode Video Micro IMO, sold my Rode after buying the Sony one.
Considering the ECM G1 or the Sennheiser 200 or 400
Are they pretty comparable you think?

As for me, internal mic sounds better than both external... G1 has overstated high freq as well.
Oh wow that’s cool to hear a different opinion in regard to the sound quality… you’re the first to say that. Very interesting…👍
Didn’t know about the pattern, damn just costed me one fifty
Oh man…. Yeah the pick-up patterns are interesting on this mic for sure. I guess I just have mixed feelings about it overall.
