Agreed man i just sub'd up 🤘 i put a 4.8L into my LT1 fbody and have a rough 5.3L i got with the 4.8L both for $300cad. Gonna do just this to the 5.3 for my back up engine when i finally go boost. Back yard budget shit is the most fun keep it up
I genuinely don’t understand all the “gLaD yOuR nOt mY mEcHaNiC” comments..? People have built these things in a sandbox with a sledge hammer and made 500+ with a china turbo and hp tuners all day... I was impressed with how much they “cared” while they were assembling it lol
Most “mechanics” do the bare minimum to get you out the door to bring in the next sucker to gouge them too. If the car breaks down they’ll charge you more and just say it was another issue and not the one they previously fixed. A lot of backyard grease monkeys take more care into what they do than a professional shop.
It goes both ways , honest mechanics are hard to find , but most backyard grease monkeys as you call them , sure they fix one thing but doesn't mean it was done the right way or they had to right tools for the job , usually ignorant and cause more problems then they fixed , just my experience
Hell to the fuck yeah and guess what the 5.3 likes it. Shit it might shit itself but who cares it’s a beast tear it down and make it even more powerful. I’ve got 311k and I at least do 10 pulls a week
I watched this dude take a palm sander to the block and I was like “…that’s illegal he can’t do that… can he?” *continues to watch* 10/10 over all I know it’s critical but it’s cool to see you don’t have to treat the thing like it’s patient zero for smallpox Hope the build panned out well
Been building em like this for years. No machine shop unless a crank journal needs to be ground. You can even bore with a stone hone it just takes a lil while. You can shave the head down with a nice flat surface covered in 80 grit. You can re-use headbolts , sand bearing surfaces , run only the top ring on the pistons , pretty much all the stuff that people say you should NEVER do, haha... as long as you understand the purpose of each part and what stresses it will see. Bad ass valve cuts can be done on a mini-lathe from harbor freight. DIY flow bench to see what the porting is doing. Fun
No, no no. First, that hone is ment for chasing dingle berry's off your ass. If you have a nodding donkey and know how to use it, maybe. No way are you going to accurately hone to next piston size. If you want it to look like a street cone, sure. Not hating, just calling bs
You can re-use tty bolts but 1: They're cheap as shit, just go buy them. and 2: You gotta feel for the yield zone of the bolt which is where it seems like it's starting to flex instead of turn, stop at that point , that's as tight as it's gonna get. If you go any further than that, it severely weakens the bolt or twists it in half
Awesome video guys. I was looking online for 5.3’s between 400hp - 500hp. Your video popped up and I really enjoyed watching two guys build the 5.3. Gives me something to shoot for this spring when I start my build. I’m doing a drift and really fun Street toy 89 Ram 50/Mighty Max that we’ve owned for 31 years now. Again, great videos I’ve seen so far. I can’t wait to hear it purrrrr. 😉🤙🏻✌🏼
I thought the same thing about the heads but yea it was scotch brite, however they could sand it on a glass table and that doesn’t require a machine shop either. Almost Everything can be done at home with the proper know how. Great video, nice build, hope the channel blows up!
I guess make a video of how you would do it, and message the individual instead of putting some crazy negative stuff on their page seriously I have a page and wouldn't want negativity on it , however if there is something wrong a subscriber should message the youtuber that created the video and if theres multiple people with the same messages , they would probably positively respond . Nobodys gonna change anything if u nag them and this ain't even my page but I'd be pissed if I seen so much hate.
I don’t know if you guys are still making content but i just wanted to say after watching this i went out and bought me a 5.3 out of a c1500 with a broken lifter to rebuild from scratch and make it my personal own. I have never fully did a rebuild from scratch before but after watching i built enough confidence to at least try so i plan on more information as i start my goal of 700-800hp with boost of course not on a budget so any good advice helps
Debating to rebuild or put a new motor in mine but I think imma rebuild it since this was so helpful. Love seeing buddies helping each other to build a work of art.
I built my 6.0 the same way, minus sending my block and heads to be ported and cleaned up. Watching this makes me miss my homies from Alabama. Since I moved away, it's hard to find true car guys that can get after it with you. Good work, did you use plastiguage on the crank?
Same bro, I don’t have friends who’s interested in putting in work for this. The one homie I do have all he wanna do is sleep and smoke up all my weed all day. I can’t have him around, I get irritated lol
That was your take away ?! Dry crank install , smacking a balancer on with the crank bolt then proceeding to use it , degree the camshaft ?!? Pffftt why would you bother doing that ?!? Pretty sure when they were putting the pistons in they smashed the rings completely off one piston all because they can’t work a ring compressor. Wd40 to lube up the hone ….. and drop it in on a dry bore. Old mate who ported the heads looked like he phone it in half way. I bet the oil pump was slid over the crank and bolted up , not shimmed correctly.the probably reused the lifter trays in it … they seem like that type of people All in all there was heaps of things that made me cringe …. But hey wish version of Lenny Kravits says it’s gunna make 500HP from that little 5.3 …. If it ran longer than 3 minutes I’d be very surprised….
Absolutely loved the video man. Great job guys. And the dark purple really fits the motor well. Definitely had to hit the subscribe and the like button!

More shade tree mechanic than a bush mechanic. It’s a budget build and anyone hating on it has no concept of the words “budget build.” It was leaking more oil before, they cleaned the hell out of it and put it back together like many have done before them. If you grew up with a dad working on his own cars, do you remember him having all the tech and whatnot you see today? Of course not, most of it didn’t exist and you saw a lot of these techniques used by them back then, just cuz the hot rod car show does it perfectly doesn’t mean the other way doesn’t work. It’s all preference and budget. It might leak a little oil and wear a little faster at worst, but it’s still far better than it was.

I only say this so other future builders wont observe the techniques you used and think that is the proper way to do this type of project. Why so much oil in the piston bores? for dramatic video effect? it looked cool but not sure of the purpose.

Crystal Malek might ass well just get a 6.0 its rated at 345hp

no gen3 iron block 5.3 came with flatops. Am I missing something?
Jason Brown 4.8s have flat top pistons. Also the 482 cast crank, sooo...

This was originally a 4.8 Vortec block that came with an additional 5.3 crank, which is what we used - making it a 5.3 with the correct 5.3 rods.
Did the crankshaft get balanced??? I assume it has to get rebalanced because of new bearings and pistons atleast.
Yes

on a cathedral post ls head ...yes he did...
