  • What is a quick crop you can grow in small space?
Jerry Coleby-Williams loves mung beans (Vigna radiata), which are easy to grow in his Brisbane garden.
You can use them as a green manure because they are legumes, so add nitrogen to the soil. they’re also good to eat; a small amount provides all the protein an adult needs in a day.
They come as either climbers or bush beans. Jerry simply adds some compost to a flat area of soil, creates a small furrow and dribbles the seed in. If they come up too thickly, simply thin them out.
It only takes eight weeks from sowing to harvesting, which is a very quick turnaround.
The beans are ripe for picking when they go a darker colour, but be careful not to rip off the flowering spur next to the ripe bean or you will lose the next round of flowering - and fruit.
