Yes they can, but there really is no need to make hills as long as you keep the water from puddling near the base of the plants... Thanks for watching.
@TheBackGardenYard Thank you for responding. it definitely helps. I planted pole beans next to my sweet corn, and needed to hill the corn but was worried about the adolescent beans.
I couldn’t fight off the aphids this year. Neem oil hurt the bean leaves. I’m going to try adding more herbs and flowers next year to see if that helps.

Thanks David. I can till the entire garden when there aren't any plants in it, in 2 hours. But I move fences for trellises and mound up the rows, so it's usually about 1 whole day preparation time total. Here is an early video. ua-cam.com/video/4lx7LP2uUUQ/v-deo.html
This is the first year Im planting pole beans. Good info on pruning, Id never have done that.. Could you tell me the best spacing when planting? thanks.
Usually it's because the plants are too close together. If that's the case, try thinning them some. Otherwise, it could be because there was too much nitrogen fertilizer, or a lack of bees to pollinate the flowers... Hope you still get a crop!
How far apart do you plant your bean seeds? I put mine 6 inches apart, but I planted two seeds in each spot. Then I didn't have the heart to thin them to one per spot, so I have them pretty thick. Do you think this toping method would also be good for White half runners? Thank you.
Hi Jay, I don't recommend planting 2 beans in one spot, unless you are going to thin, as the roots of each plant will compete with each other. That said, you will still get a crop. And I've had success with the topping method on several kinds of pole beans, and if you have seen long suckers on the half runners before, then go for it. Thanks for watching.
Hey can you make a video about how you trellis your grapes? I have so many root bound grape plants in a pot because I can't figure out how to trellis them.
Actually I will be doing grape and muscadine videos later in the late summer, early fall, and I'll make a special effort to show the trellis system. Meanwhile find a 20 foot long and 3 ft wide area that gets at least 8 hours of sun, plant exactly in the middle of that area, and place a thin pole beside it and tie it loosely to the pole until it reaches 6 ft high.
Yes. Once they reach the top of the trellis, I will pinch them off and take off lower leaves so the suckers can run and make a second crop. I'll likely do a video on that process... Great question.
I usually wait until they reach the top of the trellis to pinch the top, therefore more side shoots. I suppose it would be ok to start pinching about half way up though, that would leave room above for more growth before the top becomes too thick of a mass... Maybe I will try some like that this year.. Thanks for the question.
Yep, it was actually fill dirt - mostly subsoil when I started gardening here, 11 years ago, but I add compost and mulch every year, and especially into the rows when I plant, and the plants seem to like the mixture of clay and compost now.
@@lourdesvanhees6654 Check out this video, as I add soil amendments directly to the rows of beans before I plant. ua-cam.com/video/4lx7LP2uUUQ/v-deo.html
Cool! Not that I need more! Been looking for flat Italian pole beans for 4 yrs here in SE NC, any suggestions? Plus, I like picking cukes, how early do you suggest planting in my region, so close to yours?
My greenhouse is not heated, so I will start plants when the lows are in the upper 30's, outside, and the greenhouse usually only drops into 40's. You don't want to start them too early, as the roots will all bind together and it could stunt your new plants. Thanks for watching.
Great question Reviews and Trials. I wait until they reach the top of the trellis or fence to top them, as I want that first vine to leave as many opportunities for side suckers to run as possible. It's only a very few days until they run to the top.
Hello Sir from the far North. Could you tell me what wisdom you have on the picking technique? Should you try to get the bean off the plant with the little stem intact? Or is it okay to just snap the actual bean off at the tip to remove it from the vine? (so a little bit of bean will still be hanging there).
Great question. I usually use my thumb and detach the entire bean from the plant, as I don't want to leave anything for the bugs to chew on. Also, don't let young children harvest beans, as they will yank em off and likely damage some plants.
I might have missed it, but how does the bush bean support make them produce more? Is it just so the plant doesn’t get damaged? I was hoping to find some info on better bush bean outcomes. Any advice would be appreciated. Mine haven’t started blooming yet.
Yes Lanna, supporting the bush beans will allow them to continue to grow tall, and you may get 5 or 6 pickings from them, vs the usual 2 or 3 pickings I have found. I will do follow up videos to show how it's going. Thank you for watching.

I squish as many Japanese beetles as possible between 2 boards I made especially for beetles and the Joro spiders. As soon as the rain ends I will spray most of my plants with Neem Oil - Organic insecticide - and that also helps to keep them down. But eventually, the insects will win, they usually do, but hopefully after I pick several bushels of green beans.

In general your garden looks anemic. The bush beens should not fall over . The stems are weak. Healthy bush beans will stand waist high. Something is wrong in your garden. Low light, use of wood chips or saw dust, or a combination. I see it in most your plants.
Don't think they are anemic, but they are growing in an area where only afternoon sun reaches them, so they do get a bit leggy, thus the need to support them. Thanks for the comment.

Everyone who believes and calls on the name of Jesus shall have his sins forgiven, for He is God who took human form and offered Himself as a sacrifice. Watch for the imminent appearance of Satan on earth, where he will pretend to be Jesus. Jesus was eating at Simon's house (Simon was a leper whom Jesus had healed) a few days before His crucifixion when a woman arrived with a box of priceless ointment and anointed Him with the entire box. The disciples thought the woman was crazy because she could have sold the ointment and given the money to the poor. She had anointed Him for burial, Jesus revealed to them, and He commanded that what she had done be reported so that she would be remembered wherever the gospel was told.

Are the cucumbers pinched off like the beans?
Yes. Once they reach the top of the trellis, I will pinch them off and take off lower leaves so the suckers can run and make a second crop. I'll likely do a video on that process... Great question.
How tall do they have to be before you pinch off the top, can it be done at a smaller height?
I usually wait until they reach the top of the trellis to pinch the top, therefore more side shoots. I suppose it would be ok to start pinching about half way up though, that would leave room above for more growth before the top becomes too thick of a mass... Maybe I will try some like that this year.. Thanks for the question.
I'm gardening in the Netherlands ...
And how is your garden doing in the Netherlands?
That soil looks like our good ole TN clay soil!
Yep, it was actually fill dirt - mostly subsoil when I started gardening here, 11 years ago, but I add compost and mulch every year, and especially into the rows when I plant, and the plants seem to like the mixture of clay and compost now.
And my California red clay!
I know it’s look like my soil here in Tennessee why he got healthy plants my plants are not much growing
@@lourdesvanhees6654 Check out this video, as I add soil amendments directly to the rows of beans before I plant. ua-cam.com/video/4lx7LP2uUUQ/v-deo.html
Nice, thanks!
What is the hight of this fence , asking from himachal India❤❤❤
The fence is 6 feet high. Thanks for watching in India.
The Back Yarden.
Do you top them when they're short or when they reach the top of the fence?
Great question Reviews and Trials. I wait until they reach the top of the trellis or fence to top them, as I want that first vine to leave as many opportunities for side suckers to run as possible. It's only a very few days until they run to the top.
@@TheBackGardenYard good deal! Thanks! So when you top them they decide to side shoot. Cool! I'm going to try this. Thanks dor your video!
Hi, wow the name of your channel is almost the same as ours! Congrats on your success!
Thank you. I saw several channels with backyard garden in their name, so since most of our backyard is garden, we have a garden for a yard, thus the back garden yard. BTW I checked out your channel and subscribed. Thanks for watching.
@@TheBackGardenYard it's so true! We are also suburban gardeners on a half acre in nj. We love seeing others use the space to grow food!!! Your channel is off to a wonderful start! So awesome 👌 👏 👍
How do you keep Japanese beetles & Mexican bean beetles off of your green beans? Last year, all of my bush & pole beans were decimated by them.
I squish as many Japanese beetles as possible between 2 boards I made especially for beetles and the Joro spiders. As soon as the rain ends I will spray most of my plants with Neem Oil - Organic insecticide - and that also helps to keep them down. But eventually, the insects will win, they usually do, but hopefully after I pick several bushels of green beans.
great idea, what is the reddish plant row beside your green beans. sure is pretty. nice garden
Thank you Nancy. That is a row of Red Romaine lettuce that is bolting (going to seed). I always plant more lettuce than I can eat... Thanks for watching.
that wAs informative indeed
Was that ivy gourd behind the beans ?
No ivy gourd planted, but I do have butternut squash planted down below the cherry tomatoes. Will let them climb where the snow peas are planted now. Thanks for watching.
Oh wow just like Blackberries
I can't eat the ones that grow normally!
👍👍👍
my bean won't flower
I think temps are critical
I’ve never seen such massive cucumber leaves ?
Maybe it's because they are the long Asian variety? I didn't notice how large they actually were until you commented. Thanks for watching
Wow. So much space!
rRight Quick..
Agree
Next time volume, please.
Thanks Gary - you are not the first to note that I had walked away from the camera, and wasn't using a microphone. I have since bought some new equipment and believe the audio quality is better in my recent videos. Thanks for watching.
Double your bush & pole 😂
But I can’t hear you, so what’s the point to watch you need a microphone, sir and then I will subscribe and watch your videos they look very interesting
Thanks for the constructive criticism Teresa - I get feedback that when I carry the camera, the videos are too shaky, and when I put it on the tripod, it's clanky to pull it closer. I have ordered some new camera attachments to come in next week, so I'm hoping the quality will get better. Please let me know.
Yea I look forward to seeing you in the future 😎
I had no trouble hearing him.
@@scottmiller1956Thanks Scott, I do realize that I occasionally walk too far away from the camera, and will try to edit out parts that aren't clear unless what I am doing is important to the point I am making. Thanks for watching. My videos are best watched on a TV or full screen computer..
Bet this dude don't even acknowledge his own son
What a strange reaction is this..
talk talk talk,, to much talk get to the point and get done with it
You should consider another life path. Your video got my vertigo going
Everyone else is fine
Sounds like a you problem Chuck
A waste of time!
Many have tried it and believe it increases yields. Thanks for watching.
My pole beans are in the middle of this growth and will pinch them off today, what a great trick! Does this also apply to peas or just beans? Thank you SO much. I learn about gardening everyday, thanks to great people like you showing us tricks & hacks. That way we can continue passing this information from generation to generation. 🫶
I don't try it with snow peas, because I plant them much closer together and they are done by mid-June anyway. Thanks for the great comment.
