  • This is one of the best negotiation strategies to buy a new vehicle every time. Plus you will save yourself the hassle of dealing with a car salesperson face to face. At times the dealer / auto broker will go below invoice as well.
    One thing I forgot to mention in this video is that when that same Toyota dealership that originally offered my sister $322 per month and then went down to $268 per month (sorry in the video I said $222 to $168) when i got involved they said they could not honor that price cause my sisters credit score was shot. No problem... I co-signed for her and she left the dealership within an hour with her new car!
    Appreciate any Subs. Thank you.

    I'm 65 and have bought 20+ new and used cars in my life. Never talk ANYTHING other then PRICE. Never talk trade, payment or show feelings on the car you are looking to buy. Go on line and check autotrader or = for what the exact make model and year of the car is being offered within 500 miles PERIOD print them out and keep them in hand (don't show them). You are dealing with pro's who have one thing on their mind "get as much of your money as possible". These people have been trained for hours and hours and want to play 3 card Monte game of mixing and misleading you with the payment, financing, trade, warranties and free ice cream cones for life. Bottom line price FIRST all else doesn't matter until price of the car is set. Next watch for BS fees added by the finance department. Remember these people are not your friend and could give a shit less about you.

    • @ILuvTrading
      @ILuvTrading  7 років тому +5

      +derekjlight works both ways. I'm financing through the dealer cause they are offering better rate then my banks ( yes this happens don't always think ur bank will give u best rates). I want to know my monthly payments for 5 years. So out the door price of car would be 60 months x monthly payment. Again it works both ways it's just a preference.

    • @chriswilson1968
      @chriswilson1968 7 років тому +10

      Branden A They don't bring down the vehicle price lol They raise the amount of total payments. Instead of 60 payments they will raise it to 75 to lower the payments and make it seem like you are getting a discount or something. They can actually lower the monthly payment and raise the price of the car. Settle on the best price first and then decide on a payment plan. Also you should get pre approved for a loan not rely on the dealership to finance it.

    My insurance company, USAA, offers a car buying service. I told them exactly what I wanted and they got me a great price. This is how they did it:
    1. They didn't deal with retail sales they dealt with the fleet managers.
    2. As an individual, the dealer doesn't
    have to be very good to me. At best I'll be a repeat customer in 3 years but in fact, I'll be back in 10 years. They must keep USAA happy because they will be back next week.

    • @jerrylundegaard2592
      @jerrylundegaard2592 6 років тому +2

      You need to understand those "car buying services."
      They are good for folks who do not understand the car buying process and/or do not like to confront a car sales person. They offer a good price and require little work.
      But they do not offer the best price.
      Only car dealerships can sell cars. Those car buying services negotiate prices with the dealers. They do not negotiate for the buyer. They negotiate to result in a sale.
      Most of those car buying services receive $300 from the dealer for each sale.
      The best deals are always achieved via hard work to gain knowledge and are always negotiated by the buyer.

    • @jackjamison8392
      @jackjamison8392 6 років тому

      William, that is probably true for independent buyer service but USAA is a member owned company which was founded by Military Commissioned Officers. Now they have extended their reach to all active military and have a bank, etc.
      I can not deal with a fleet manager, I don't know if a typical buying service can I imagine Hertz buys at a better price than anyone can get fro a retail salesman. In any event I was and and remain pleased with my purchase.

    • @jerrylundegaard2592
      @jerrylundegaard2592 6 років тому +4

      In any case, a good deal is a deal which the buyer is happy with.
      My point is simply all buying services, including USAA, offer a decent deal with little work. For many folks that is a good deal. It may be.
      But no buying service offers the lowest price. The lowest price will only be achieved through face-to-face dickering between the buyer and the dealer.

    last year, my car was totaled, i loved it and wanted another just like it. i found two (that were not at sketchy dealers) with the same trims, same years, different colors, just outside my area (i'm in miami, one was in west palm, the other was in stuart), I spent one day, given the distance, and i saw the one in west palm first, I test drove it, liked it but did not stick around (left to go see the other one.....salesman was in floored and agitated that I was leaving), saw the second one and preferred the first (though it was priced $2000 higher. the first dealer called me, i let it go to voicemail then waited and texted him back and asked for his best offer, he said the manager didn't like doing business by text and I told him I preferred it that way, anyway, i got the car "out the door" (I paid in cash) for $3000 less than they were asking, plus they certified it (the other one was advertised as CPO and I made sure to show them the ad before I left to go see it), I was very pleased and the CPO warranty has more than worked out the kinks at no cost to me! between the accident vehicle and replacement, i was out less than $3000 (two years newer with only 43,000 miles, totaled car had over 80K). I feel I did okay this time, just glad both were listed at the same time, special circumstance.

    I have seen a $57,000 (window sticker) truck go for $42,000. I have seen a $45,000 (window sticker) truck go for $30,000 and less. time of year and how long it has been on the lot has something to do on pricing. the best thing to do is "build" a vehicle on a manufacturers website then take advantage of sales and discounts and incentives. PS. I have always been able to get a free extended warranty and at least maintenance for 3 or 4 years. but my best advise would be to buy from same reputable dealership over many years and you will be treated right.

    Too many people forget that cars are a commodity item. I told my kids when they want to a car to check with every dealer within a 100mi radius (pick your range). And contact them. This has become easier with the intenet.
    i picked up a 2010 Lexus IS-F this way for $10K off sticker., trade-in was negotiated over the phone as well (actually early lease buy out by the dealer) I had to travel 2hrs to get it but I had a glorious ride home.
    My son just wanted a VW Golf R and he had dealers wanting over sticker for used ones. He found one 2 hrs away (30minutes from me). I went down and drove it for him and put the deposit down. Final was $150 over invoice

      My one Grandfather used to do that in the 60's-80's would write a letter to dealers far away and say "I want this, with this and I'll pay this and not a penny more", he would actually get some calling him back and saying come on in we can do it, others would write back and basically laugh at him. He always got the vehicle for the price he wanted to pay. You are right today we have the Internet and people shouldn't be worried about driving to buy (which basically means take 30 minutes and sign paperwork the buying part was done before you ever set foot in the door). Plus you might get a nice little road trip out of the deal.

    Know the loan value of your vehicle, use 2 or 3 lenders to find average to be more realistic. Next, find out what the insurance pay off on the vehicle you are wanting, especially used cars, give them all pertinent info to get most accurate payoff. Thats what i do every time and always works in my favor, im not afraid to walk away. I also never go to purchaes with negative equity, always go in with 10-20 percent equity and I also always put 10 percent cash down. Going in unpreoared, with negative equity and no down payment will leave you at dealer with ball in their court.

    I just bought a Lexus! got MSRP - 11% off. I don’t know if it was the lowest I could get, but it was low enough. They accepted. Then they added about 10% in taxes, fees, etc. so the out the door amount was less than MSRP. Great car companies like Lexus/Acura/Toyota have little to no rebates cuz they don’t have to. Shitter cars like American made cars (lots of them are actually assembled in shithole countries like Mexico, Haiti, Brazil, Spain) have huge rebates. Anyhow, here are my steps:
    1. Go to Dealerrater.com and choose your salesman to work with. (Afterwards, he’ll ask how you got his name and tell him the truth, he will appreciate you and you build up good Fengshui with him.
    2. Go to dealer website and find his email and request if the certain car is still available ( cuz websites not updated) also ask for his phone #.
    3. After emailing or calling back and forth, he will ask u to come in. Tell him no, you’d like to settle on a final price first. He’ll ask what price. Tell him you want MSRP-11% (still a good profitable deal for them). He’ll flinch at your price and won’t answer yet. Tell him you’d like to set an appointment to meet him a week from now. Say “goodbye, we’ll be in touch if any changes”.
    4. Call or email him 24 hrs later and say you’re pre approved loan (or cash) is all ready and ask if his dealership is on the CUDL system. He’ll ask if you want to come in sooner. You say, you can’t until you get a hard $ figure. He’ll do calculations while you wait and give you the before price (msrp-11%) and out the door price and he’ll do it quickly so be careful. You repeat it back slowly to him to confirm he dollar amount. He’ll confirm (you must show you are precise and exact). Tell him u accept his $ amount and reschedule To come in sooner.
    5. You arrive and he’ll be all gushy. Tell him you’d like to take a 3 min test drive before signing docs to make sure all is working well and its not a lemon.
    6. You test drive, pull over to a parking lot somehere and slowly test all the functions with no pressure from him. ( i found missing floor mats and a weak but acceptable ventilated seat).
    7. Come back and tell him all is good (except for missing this or that) and tell him you have an appt to go to afterwards and ask if the transaction can be done quickly.
    8. He won’t let you give him a check yet until he tries to sell add ons. Say no to everything.
    9. Finally, the real person, the closer/ manager will have u sign docs but will try to sell you more insurance, contracts, add ons etc. After I said no 3 times, the sales manager turns into a mean guy and has me sign everything real fast. The smily sheep has turned into a wolf, his real self. He was all business after that. (Good guy/bad guy being played on you). It’s fine, I wanted to leave asap.
    10. Salesman gives final tips on car. Whole ordeal took 2.5 hours, way too long! But i got the car for what KBB says, the very best price on the left of the scale.

  • @hobo49nj
    @hobo49nj 8 років тому +19

    Absolutely the wrong way to negotiate for the best "Buying" price for a car. Never talk monthly payments, all you want is their best price for the car. To get this, know the invoice price of the car, know the dealers cost of the car, learn what the manufacturers hold-back is on the car, usually 2-3%, and try and learn about any other incentives the the Mfg is giving to the dealer. All of this info can be found on the internet. You should already know what the current interest rate is for a new car loan, and have a ball park figure what the car is going to cost you (add tax and freight), and divide that figure by the number of months you want to finance it for. If the payment is to high, extend the length of the loan by 12 or 24 more months But NEVER tell the dealer what monthly payment you want, because they'll get it for you one way or another by extending the loan without you knowing it and you'll be paying thousands more then you think you are. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. But this advise is really the wrong way to negotiating the Best Purchase Price for your new car.

    • @chrisbod3521
      @chrisbod3521 7 років тому +2

      so do you know what the invoice is its only what the dealership wants to show, heck even the salesman don't know how much is in the vehicle, only the general manager knows. Heck they even keep stuff from the sales manager. when you walk into a dealership either take the price they give you or balk at it and then write a number down on a piece of paper, this make go back and forth heck they may ever do a TO on you and send in the big guns, The point is you want to wear them down, its a game of cat and mouse. even today with the internet its still the same old game being played, you just have to lead them on play dumb and then hammer down if you really want that price if its in means of the dealership, sometimes it won't be and they'll tell you to take a hike basically. you have to stay within reason but you should do some price research before going into a dealership and have the prices on hand when you go to the dealership

  • @shawncarroll7507

    Okay.....first of all, PLEASE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE "ADVISING PEOPLE", LOL. A few seconds in, you inform people that the cost of the car is the amount shown prior to options....really? All of those bells and whistles are free? Secondly, exactly what kind of car did your sister buy for $12000 out the door. I love the way you go through her experience, and then present a Marony from a Lexus. This brings me to the most important part....lack of math skills.
    Ridiculous.
    Here is how you buy a new car:
    "Hello Mr. Salesman. I'm interested in car "X". I am going to use my own financing. I am willing to pay invoice, minus incentive a
    A, B, C, etc. (whatever you find that you are entitled to). I have my own financing. Also, I am not interested in an extended warranty, or ANYTHING EXTRA. Please send me a purchase order I can send to my Credit Union. I am already approved for x amount. Include your trade AFTER they send you the purchase order.
    If they refuse, on to the next dealer.
    On a side note, use the same script for any ridiculously advertised pricing, (loss leader). Confirm it isn't a demo vehicle.
    There you go. Totally sterile. Keep in mind, there is more than just the price of the vehicle at play. Do you appreciate customer service? If you have an issue with the vehicle, would you like to think that you had an advocate to get things done in a timely manner for you? If the answer to those questions is yes, then do not use the aforementioned formula.
    You get what you pay for.

    Invoice price is not the dealership cost. The dealership still has to PDI the vehicle (Pre Delivery Inspection), detail it, and other costs. And the holdbacks are very rarely more than $500-$700. Funny thing is that when people do their research they are most usually looking for answers that only confirm their assumptions not necessarily the actual truth. Not every manufacturer, dealership, or even salesman are the same. Like Honda they do not have rebates, others do. Some have huge rebates some have moderate ones.

    • @jerrylundegaard2592
      @jerrylundegaard2592 6 років тому

      You are right the invoice is not the cost to the dealer. The invoice is much higher. Why? As you note, hold back which is usually 1-3 percent of MSRP. Even more important are the various incentives dealers receive from the manufacturers. Things like stair step or volume incentives.
      The reality is very few people in any dealership know the actual cost of any vehicle. Certainly not the dare sales person.
      Any buyer should start negotiations at invoice less hold back less any known incentives. They should only negotiate up from that number. Never, ever negotiate from MSRP or the dealer's offer.
      The important thing is to maintain control of the process and not let the sales person control the process. The one thing any car sales person does not know how to control is a knowledgable customer who takes control.
      Also, dealers receive an amount from the manufacturer to deliver the vehicle. No car buyer should ever pay anything for the dealer's cost to "prepare the vehicle for delivery." Any car sales person who attempts this should be ignored.
      One person anyone buying a new vehicle should never take advice from is a sales person.

      Good luck on your purchase if you haven't already made one!
      Offering cash for a vehicle to a dealership means they will be making less money since there will be no referral fee (for lack of better terminology) from the bank...so the difference in what they own the car for, and what they sell it to you for, is the only possible form of profit available to them. A much more intelligent way to go about the purchase would be to tell them you're financing with THEM, and then hand them the check/credit card/bank draft once you're signing docs.
      Also...if you're being offered a deal on a pre-owned vehicle that's $2,000 back of their internet price...you should probably buy the vehicle as the internet price that's advertised is probably the reason you inquired on that vehicle 100's of miles away from you in the first place! Also, if you're looking to make a sound investment in a vehicle, purchasing one of the top #1-2 worst depreciating vehicles on the planet (a Kia Soul) is probably not the best idea in the world. Check out a GMC Terrain or, if it's too much coin, look at a Chevy Traverse or Buick Encore. Best of luck!

    You are there for one thing: A price on a car. Get that price in writing, and get your own financing.
    Also, NEVER EVER EVER pay your tax, tag, title, etc... in your final total. Make that a separate transaction. Why? When you add them to the final price, YOU ARE FINANCING THOSE FOR 60 (or however many) months. Pay those separately!!! Why would you want to pay interest on taxes?!?

    As a sales manager, I would of loved to sell your sister or you a car. You're a "payment" shopper. I could discount the car and throw in warranties that have massive profits and still get you too that low payment. Not that I want to disclose all the secrets, but in my 15 years of car sales I've never seen a profit over 3k on any vehicle. The more you try to nickel and dime a dealer, the easier for you to get taken advantage of. Payment should never be discussed. Only the bottom line "on the road" price. Let me share an example. You want $160 a month. So you'll get that payment but the interest rate and term is going to be longer than if you would of not worried about $50. Shorter term = higher payment but much lower interest and more value of the vehicle when it's paid off because it's paid off quicker. I hope that higher interest, longer term and depreciation of value serves you well.

    • @VState60
      @VState60 7 років тому +4

      Maybe 40 years ago this was a good tactic to say "What's the CASH PRICE for this vehicle?"...I'm sure most (maybe not the author of this video, as there's basically zero good info in the video other than 'shop around) experts in the car business will tell you, the dealership make LESS money when you're paying cash. So, when you're actually bringing a draft/stroking a check, it's best to tell them you're financing with them and then at the last second hand them the draft/check. Cheers & make sure you do business with someone you like and who is transparent, rather than someone who promises you over a text message the best price, as the way this author's tactic is combated nowadays is to promise something amazing and then work backwards and move the trade allowance lower, and the sale price higher. Use an auto-broker or get a referral from someone you trust who personally knows the experience of buying from the rep they're referring you to.

    just curious...why do customers deserve invoice pricing? why do the salesmen not deserve to make a commission on their sale? Why can't they be paid for their time in assisting the customer which sometimes is 4-5 hours....? I just am at a loss, YES we all want a good deal, but these guys work of commission, have families to feed and bills to pay just like all of us. And the dealerships that hold these vehicles for us all to look thru and purchase, also need to make money to stay in business and continue to give great customer service. Just know that when your stripping down your deal and getting your invoice price, the salesmen across the table is making no commission. most likely whats called a "mini" which is $75-$100 and that might be only sale of the day. if everyone is going to continue to treat the car salesmen this way, why not every other business where everything is marked up 80% or more...?this is 2016 not 1996, car prices aren't marked up crazy amount and people still get great deals.

    • @VState60
      @VState60 7 років тому +3

      Because there are rejects like the author of this video online preaching about how glorious of a deal they got by asking 4 dealerships for quotes with incomplete information! I love when people think they're not only entitled to 'invoice' (AKA cost/what the dealership purchased the vehicle from the manufacturer for), but 3/5/10% LESS than invoice to make it a 'reasonable' deal for them. And, as always, along comes the statement "I still want you to make your money". If you are anywhere near competent and treat your clients well in the auto business, you can quickly fire those who are clueless like the aforementioned customer, and move on to folks who appreciate your expertise.
      The biggest flaw I see in shopping like most of these 'gurus' online tell you, and I've made the mistake myself with other large purchases, is working for the best DEAL all while getting caught up in invoices and incentives & attempting to use car business jargon incorrectly....get a referral from a close friend, coworker, or family member and go sit down with a reputable, transparent, respectful salesman/manager and figure out which vehicle/trim level/options/etc. is best for YOU and YOUR BUDGET...once a salesperson of any merit is emotionally invested in the actual customer, and the processes have been taken to make sure the vehicle in question is exactly right for them and their budget...you're then going to get the best deal possible. Rather than the uneducated, youtube pro, stick-in-the-mud customer who immediately tells you they A)Haven't test-driven the vehicle they claim to want, B)Dont' even know the packaging guides, and C) Haven't had a professional, proper demonstration of the vehicle & start the conversation/internet inquiry/email/text message out by telling you they want a certain vehicle (of which they don't even know the options included) for $1,500 back of invoice/cost. Agree with you 100%...& the public don't realize how little markup there are in new cars now and that the advertised price online is a pants-down, mini-deal from hell, losing proposition for the dealership. Some can be educated & decide to do business with those who shoot them straight and have integrity...some decide to shoot five text messages out and wind up being bullshitted by whomever sent them the lowest (fake, in most cases) quote. Cheers.

      e lehua thats basically being a cash buyer. When youre negotiating, tell them this. But DONT tell them how much money you're approved for

      You negotiate based on final purchase price including all fees. Lowest price wins

    This guy is telling everyone the most DIFFICULT way to do this. Telling you to go shopping to 15 (or god knows how many) lots. Cars that are in the same competitive field (IE Hyundai Sonota, Nissan Altima) are going to be priced in the same general area. If its about the price dont waste your time and go to 15 different dealerships. ON new cars you WILL get the deal you want if YOU set the terms. Do your research though, check Kelly Blue Book, find a reasonable sell price and at least be in the BALL PARK of that price and you have a shot. But if you are going to be one of these clowns that goes into a dealership and wants a car $3,000 below KBB then you are going to drive yourself nuts trying to find an IDIOT that will sign off on it. Keep it simple, have a number in mind, If you are even REMOTELY reasonable with it, you will get the deal. Instead of asking 15 dealerships for their "best deal"...YOU set the price IN HOUSE when you are ready to buy. Because the price you get over the phone is NOT going to be the same one you get in house bc NO dealership wants you to shop their price. Also there is NO WAY the number you are hoping for is going to be higher than the dealership's "best deal." you will ALWAYS have a number lower than them. Don't listen to this clown and waste all your time looking for a miracle. Ask for it when it's time to buy and your chances of getting that deal you want SKY ROCKET because the dealership knows you are ONE step from buying. But some idiot like this guy who just calls ten dealers and says "give your best price" is gonna get screwed every damn time. Take your ass to a dealership, get all the facts you need to make the purchasing decision.... interest, tax, title and license and payments and then set your terms from there. I PROMISE you will make the car buying experience TEN times easier that way.

      rember this: since car dealers advertise as much as 25% off one week another week or month they advertise thousands of $ in rebaites and then sometimes later they advertise 0% finance so all of it is smoke and mirrors and you will only get agood deal if you A; arrange the method you will finance your purchase preferably with your bank or whatever trusted finance institution you usually deal with ( remember that your Car dealer most likely gets a kickback when you finance wit him and his story about getting the best financing for you really should be inerpreted as getting the best kickback for himself )Then you really write not email or text to as many dealers as you like with absolute every bit of info what model you want colour and all add ons and ask for his best price and do this near the end of the month als ask him what payment plan he would like to offer . then do not engage in any phone conversation with any of the dealers reps but politely thwart any of such attempts andask for the price in writing also mention in your letter that you at another make with basicly the same specs and add ons and one more thing youst before you sign on the dotted line absolutel refuse to pay the extorinate docoment or registration fee of several hundert$ maybe a hundred $ is a fair cost
