    "Doesn't matter what type of training you gain, in a knife fight you will start to bleed no matter what."
    ~ something my uncle told me
    Basically told me that get your mind ready cause if you have to defend yourself from someone with a knife you will get cut and you'll need to be ready for it.

      I concur. As a retired Master Sergeant 3rd/75th. Experiencing a few knife fights. The reality is , you will get cut, training is important but the sheer savagery of a man coming at you fighting his life? It's a roll of a dice, I would rather be in a gunfight than a knife fight. The scars (4of them) remind me of that everyday. Good luck.

    • @vipe650r
      @vipe650r Рік тому

      In the little training I’ve had, that’s something that’s stuck with me - technique is valuable and powerful, but if I had to choose between knowing a lot or knowing a little, but having a settled acceptance of the violence and injury that’s going to be a part of this fight, I’d choose the latter every time. Accepting that you will bleed, accepting that you will get injured, and going in at peace with the stakes and the cost is worth it’s weight in gold.
      Mindset and peace with suffering isn’t trained enough. And I understand why. Pain, discomfort, and injury don’t market well. They’ll save your life, but they don’t market well. Most of us approach martial arts the same way we do mental health - the magic pill to avoid pain. I’m reality, those who are willing to walk through pain and get comfortable being uncomfortable are going to be the ones who get to keep walking away… except when they don’t, because real life is impossible to truly control.

    To really defend against a knife, like with everything, you need to practice with a good training partner who will simulate a real knife attack with a training blade. But if you don't have the time or the right person to train with, the best bet in my opinion if you lack the proper training is to shove the knife attacker downwards towards the ground, and run away.
    Another tactic is to block the knife the best you can and then claw your attacker's eyes out like a pissed off cat, just to distract them enough to run away. If they recover too fast for you to run away, you need to find yourself an improvised weapon quickly like a chair, anything that you can use to give you an advantage.
    I've seen a video where 4 triad gang members in an office threw everything except the kitchen sink and stopped a rival triad gang of 20 with machetes. Computers, chairs, phones, books, you name it. They use everything in the office and they actually stopped the rival gang from entering.
    So the best bet if you lack the proper training is to always run. Do whatever it takes to attack the attacker, and then run. It's almost impossible to win against a knife bare handed if you lack actual training

    • @doctormcgoveran2194

      I cant run fast and and they got to kill me from the front..I have very little training, but I figure to go with a combination scoop type, slap block, and try to catch a shoulder and slow down his elbow so I can catch it and then catch a wrist or hand slightly above the wrist.then I will spin around and get that knife arm under my arm pit and the knife in front of me..I will be chanting "never let go" in my head and I will drag that guy right over to a wall or car and beat that hand against the car till he drops the knife, and them keep on punishing that hand until I get calmed down or tired, or maybe bite of finger and swallow it..That hand will never hold a knife again, becasue I am going to break a lot of bones in that hand..Then if the guy is crippled enough I will take that knife and run away and never tell the police, because it will be hanging on the wall...

      Great example of true warrior spirit. Techniques work in demonstration, because it's rehearsed. Real life threats need instant engagement of fighting spirit, no time to think or even execute a well practised technique, it's more about using all your instinct for survival. Not many "systems" can actually train for that, unless they do a lot of simulation attacks for you to learn to react faster and more instinctively. Dangerous practice in the wrong hands though. Even competition sparring practice can result in death.
      Those off us who have had the fight "educated out of us" by living in a world of more security and comfort may never grasp the warrior spirit necessary. Only those who already have had to defend themselves or those that have had the right kind of martial arts training can ever hope to survive those kind of scenarios. To be honest, when weapons are involved you need a weapon, not just hands and feet. Even if you have a weapon you need to be able to use it without fear of consequences, because the person or people attacking you with weapons won't give a shit about the consequences. If you can't flip to savage wild beast mode, odds are you are going to be battered. Even then you probably will still get cut, stabbed and slashed before it's all over.

      If you dont have a better weapon and know how to use it. The best defense against a knife is space. Need to move quickly out of range. If not. All the crap that every martial art teaches will get you hospitalized at the least and possibly very dead.

      Well it really depends on whether you LOVE your family of course.
      But I disagree on that one. On two parts.
      1. If you brought someone you LOVE into a bad situation - you have to solve it. Cause you brought them there.
      2. If you didn't prepare for a fight - it's all on you IMO.
      The only exception of the rule would be if running and getting help increases the chance of success.
      But if running just results in your family getting murdered - I don't think you can sleep at night afterwards.
      So solution in my opinion:
      1. Carry arms or protection and learn how to use it
      2. Learn how to defend or be a meat shield for family so they can get away instead of you
      If you did prep for the situation - but you are a runner by nature.. well - you did your best.
      GG.

    I love this video...one thing the best knife is felt before it is seen...LOL lots of rough guys have a tiny pen knife they have it in their hand and only a half inch of blade showing..the other guy doesn't see the blade and when the knife guy throws a punch that is lousy in form and and the boxer ignores it, the boxer is split wide open. it is the opposite of thinking punch block a knife thrust..I appreciate the great hand speed you have and it make the lesson you teach harder to adapt to me..i am slower than you are I got to catch a shoulder to slow down the bicep to catch it and then the wrist, maybe move to the knuckles, but I will be stabbed trying to catch that hand or knuckles,,when I get far enough down the arm to the wrist or hand I will spin around and put that arm under my arm pulled out and drag the guy over to a wall or car or anything I can beat that hand on and punish that knife out of that hand.. I will be chanting never let go, never let go, the second I catch that wrist...my friend is a wing chun guy and he says "control the weapon at all costs" to long to chant..LOL that hand will never hold a knife again, because i will beat that hand against something and break all the bones, if the knife falls out I will keep beating and breaking those bones.might even chew on it. i wrote master wong a while back and told him I thought biting was a good thing in a fight..he said it was nasty and unsanitary, I said "I hope if you get in enough trouble to need a guys ear bite off I will be there and bite them."

  • @edi9892

    I agree for the most part, but one thing is a bit misleading:
    Cutting at clothes is mostly useless.
    A thick pullover, leatherjacket or jeans-jacket can turn a mediocre slash of a machete or even Katana into a scratch for you. Yes, you can cut Tatami and stuff, but that doesn't move. If the distance or angle is a bit off, or the target moves on impact, you won't cut deep. You can test it for yourself with a full water-bottle and on old pullover. The most amazing experiment I've seen in this context was performed by the youtuber Skallagrim testing even big and razorsharp knives at an old rainjacket. The knives could cut it, but the jacket moved with the blade and made folds preventing the knives to cut much deeper.
    What you really need to fear a primarily thrusts. Slashes are only a threat to unprotected skin unless we are talking about big blades, serrated blades or talon-like blades.
    PS: it's also possible to kick someones knife out of his hand. I've seen it in real life. The point is, that the other person doesn't want to use it (a mugger but not a murderer, or simply someone who fears the other guy and holds the knife out in a typical get-off-me-stance).

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 7 років тому +2

      I'm well aware of Thegn Thrand and Skallagrims experiments. They showed that *it's possible* to cut through thick clothing, but that it's far from easy and *requires really sharp blades and good technique.* I collect blades myself and did some tests of my own too.I've also seen people getting injured by knives and broken bottles. Due to the latter (more or less) I took interest in knife-fighting and I was always a sucker for anything about the great age of swordfights. Most early modern militaries considered *thrusts more lethal than slashes.* Why do you think that most blades primarily for thrusts were developed and used in warmer countries? The answer is that even thick civilian clothing can turn a deadly slash into a scratch, with some luck.
      Please don't come with *freak incidents like killer-chicken.* Cats killed people too, but more cuts died by humans than the other way around. I could also give you a list of people surviving Katana, Machete or even lance attacks from present day. Sure, you could learn a bit from them, but extreme cases don't tell you what normally happens.
      *Long story short:* most of the blades you'll find on the street won't be particularly dangerous to you in slashes, as long as they hit a leather jacket etc. Unlike the days of yore, people carry less dangerous blades, practice less and maintain them less than they should, if their life depended on them.
      I agree with *your last statement,* but I think, you got the priorities wrong. Stabs to the chest are the real killer. Slashes are dangerous to arms and legs, more than thrusts, but most of the injuries are survivable. Just look at how many people failed at committing suicide by cutting their arteries...
      When it comes to slashes, you need to protect your neck and eyes, but that leaves you open to thrusts to the torso, which will kill slower than a severed throat, but are more deadly than cut wrists or legs.
      If *you have a tiny blade,* you're mostly better off only slashing at the neck and eyes, but else use it for thrusting. A bowie, tanto etc. of 30cm could chop off someones arm and will do serious damage to the torso, if the blade is sharp. A Kukri or a full sized sword could also kill by striking the head or by chopping off legs etc.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 7 років тому

      Thegn and Thrand proved IMHO more how often their cuts failed than, what a blade can do in the best circumstances, despite them being certainly experienced in cutting. Don't get me wrong, I prefer cutting over thrusting in martial arts. I'm only trying to be realistic about it in present day scenarios.
      You should watch Skallagrim: Regular Clothing vs. Knife Slashes - Didn't Expect That...
      To answer your question: I rather risk a potentially lethal slash over a thrust to my torso. If I win the fight, I might be able to stop the bleeding myself or get help. You can't just expect to prevent every attack, thus you need to set priorities.
      You should also look for realistic knife defense tests. Many came to the following conclusion:
      If the victim could turn around and run away: they got stabbed 1-2
      If they went berserk, they got stabbed more often, but were often able to subdue the attacker.
      If they focused on defense, they ended up dead, especially when they tried to disarm or do takedowns.
      It was also funny to see how the _don't take a knife to a gun fight_ guys fail, when they were ambushed...
      So the take-home message IMHO is: if you can, run. If you can't: push away or kick and run. If you still cant run, try to KO him or knock him to the ground. Use disarms and take-downs only opportunistically, but not as a go-to method.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 7 років тому

      Clarence Baluca I tried it with an Albion Kingmaker. My hands are not callous enough to hold it comfortably, but even a thin textile glove was enough to really hold it. It doesn't cut as long as you're not sliding along the blade. However, as soon as you weaken your grip it can slide and cut you accidentally.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 7 років тому

      Clarence Baluca yes, you can cut some materials by merely pressing your blade against it. However, slicing makes it much easier, just think of cutting a soft bread. In order to cut tougher materials, you need either a slicing component or a lot of kinetic force. If you do the murderstroke, then most of kinetic energy will go into the taget. At the hand it accelerates and deaccelerates at a much lower pace. If you tried to block a blade with your hand it would be an entirely different scenario.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 7 років тому +1

      Clarence Baluca yes, it's best done with gloves and more of a last resort thing. Still getting hit with the crossguard on the helmet sucks big time. I've seen one video of someone demonstrating it but accidentally hurting his knight in plate armor without going even near to full force. The halfswording for thrusting is done for two reasons: it increases the precision and reduces the flex. European swords are for my taste a bit to whippy anyway, but most Katana to sluggish.

Yes, it probably WILL BE a straight line (like punches) because it will go like this : villain takes out the knife and then just stabs repeatedly. No technique, nothing fancy. People like that are not trained killers with a disciplined mind and an iron will, they are savages like the islamic monster from the recent events in Marseilles.

    I train Kali. Have trained a few other martial arts. Best defense against a knife are a few easy things to remember. 1 have a bigger knife or 2 knives. The best way to deal with it realistically is to outrun the person. Especially with someone who knows how to use a knife.

    2:40 another thing they will often do is not even bother to escape your grab, switch the knife to their other hand and stab you with that. And that thing about kicking the knife out the hand is just hilarious! I always cringe whenever I see someone try to teach stuff like that. Remember what happened in that machete fight footage you found too. Btw Sifu, how would you deal with someone with 2 knives? I guess they won't be grabbing at least.. Thanks for these tips btw! :D

    There's no use to disarmed them, I just run away if I can. That is the smartest choice. Every little hole that you can fit in is an escape route and not get stab.

    also the moment you catch the hand you have to hit the attacker and disarm the knife, and if you have a keys a wallet any think a phone in your hand, hit the attacker with it to by some time to run a way fast as possible.

    Not sure where I am really going with this or if there is much point to it. But anyway I'll ask it. (LOL) Okay. Say for example there were two business owners. One was more comprehensive than the other, paying better wages and their business made better products, but these products were being undercut in price by a less scrupulous business owner blah blah blah you get the idea. Now say for example there was a situation in-which the two had to fight each other - sounds like something out of a van damme film, I don't know maybe in the context of an alien invasion or something or whatever I don't know? Should we expect the comprehensive person to win the fight (they are equally strong and as fit)? Maybe the less comprehensive person was relying on just discriminating their opponent (perhaps the same way they advertised their products) to win rather than being better than them?

    No disrespect. The Truth is 99% of all martial arts techniques today won't help you in a real knife situation with empty hands defence. You are training in a FALSE SENSE OF CONFIDENCE TRAINING for your self and your students. Ask your self how would you honestly defend a fast slash attack across your body with a small knife or even a 12" blade when you can't step back or to the sides and have limited space. Try it and find the truth for your self.This way you know the truth.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  6 років тому +2

      +Dhiru Parmar completely agree. Death is the high likelihood when facing a knife. Hence NEVER face a knife. If you have no choice then a force equaliser is required. If not then you have no choice but to try before you die.
