I’ve been following your videos for a while now and I have to agree, elbow strikes are one of my favourites because you can use them in different ways. I use them a lot while training lol.
in my system we have an elbow we call 'collapsing elbow' where you either strike and connect, or strike and miss/blocked and you allow the striking hand to 'collapse' into an elbow strike. can be a little tough to time it, but if it works its a big surprise to the opponent, and it then allows you to get in close for better elbow strikes.
Ellbows are awesome. You can use them from guards and follow up with hammerfists or grabs. Moreover, they (and hammerfists) are much safer than punches. I learned it the hard way when I saw a boxing bag and tried various strikes without gloves. PS: if you want to know which hurt the least: 8) finger jabs 7) leopard fist 6) hooks 5) punches 4) slaps 3) palmstrikes and forearmsstrikes (either inside our outside) 2) hammerfist 1) ellbow strikes

There is still a definite risk of breaking your hand using a hammer fist if u strike a hard target. This is precisely what happened to my sparring partner. Also with finger jabs u could easily hurt your fingers. I always hit a punching bag with no gloves. This is for self defense, it’s not a sport. And yeah, with an uppercut u need a certain kind of bag
Another great video. I love using elbows too for the exact same reason, the force and getting into the opponent's personal space. Many will freak out fighing in such close quarters. I've studied silat and pukulan, and they have some of the best elbow techniques and concepts. Thanks again for the wonderful video sifu.

Nice tip: when throwing an elbow, make sure your thumb knuckle is pointing at the floor and not at you (in other word, your backhand faces you and not the sky). This will naturally make the bone part of the elbow more out, which you will use to inflict more damage. The rotation used to reach that position can also increase the damage.
What a great teacher! I like your persona cos u dressed and looked like a banker/ lectuerer at a university etc but actually you are a very skilled martial artist.
Also, elbows are tough to defend against. Mostly, because of their short range and close proximity, and less telegraphing of the movement. People are always looking for the punch, so in a way it is a surprise attack in terms of a strike.
Another great part of elbows is that if you MISS in a mount position with a fist you hit the ground and break a hand or wrist potentially. Same in a standing shot if they're against a wall. An elbow is sharp, extremely powerful, and when folded it naturally guards the joint.
Elbows are great with a long guard + spear elbow. I often practice sparring drills in my muay thai class where they go super aggressive and crazy with the punches and rush me. We use elbow guards and go SUPER light but yeah... Get into a clinch , lead with an elbow and that'll end like 90% of the fights.
I completely agree about elbows. Especially about the fact that you probably won't be able to catch a fist with the elbows. But I also watched a video from master Wong where he claims opposite. I didn't agree with that, so and you do.

timing though and carefull of the ribcage exposure, even a bone from a fractured rib can wreck a lung, elbows points deliver pain and thats a strong signal esp defence, usefull if they pull you to the ground from behind along with an eye gam of course :) learn drumming hard for stamina then fight like mantis and octopus
I've seen a video of two russian, drunk guys fighting over a very dumb thig essentially, but as they're fighting, one of them takes down the other to the ground, and then, the guy that's being grabbed starts to elbow the other guy... ON THE THROAT! And he does this like 15 times before the spectators stop him, and this is where he realizes that he just took the guy's life, by repeatedly striking him in the throat with full power, non-stop elbow hits.
How do I practice this stuff without a partner? I don’t have anyone to train with but I have a heavy bag. I know it’s not the same as a person, so what’s the best way to train this without a partner?
@@Mr9thCHYLD Lol hit yourself with some force and see. Don't do it too hard but enough to see, what could possibly happen if you hit someone in the bicep with force. Even "karate chops" can be used. I just hit myself with with a chop to the bicep. I felt it and I can imagine, how it could possibly affect a person ability to use that arm. Just smashing into the bicep with extreme force against an attacker.
If Wing Chun why not emphasize blasting the CG with well timed linear attacks (long to short) while not forgetting to "listen" with your weapons to his resistance and clashing...not to mention leg destruction, all part of Wing Chun and known to be effective....

And always thumbs pointing down (you forgot to mention it) with elbow kicks so the impact happens with the bone and not the muscle, which you do naturally. However, I would rather put my front leg and foot outside (3:35) as the opponent can easily sweep it away with his front leg and make me fall. The position would also give me better control as I will still be in front of him, which won't be the case for him. Well done, good information. The chum kiu and biu gee forms get those elbow strikes in. It is quite interesting that staying relaxed and just turning your body and hip then allows the elbow to swing. If you do a hook punch but let the arm fold it becomes elbow strike. I like how you blend BJJ with Wing Chun, it is a good mix.
Yes, by doing that, he can't knee you in the groin! If you drop the back leg two inches, it pushes the knee forward, locking it into place. It's called FORWARD INTENT in wing chun and is one of the ten concepts. Remember not to lean forward or backward, but keep a straight up and down position so your structure stays solid.
Respectfully disagree. One of the many reasons I left my Wing-Chun teacher. Nothing is static in a street fight. If you stay static, you will get starched! You'll never see any winning boxer stand straight, ever. Not even the Russians. You generate all your power from the crouch. Also, in a real fight, if you stand straight, you can't move as effectively. Your attacker may punch you, but he may simply use his mass to tackle/grab/grapple with you. You absolutely don not want to be "straight up" if that happens, because you'll end up face up & lights out on your ass on the ground with brain damage.

We enter in after making initial contact. Again, if we use angled footwork, with a body rotation towards the attack to be able to see it coming, and we are on the outside of his attacking arm and close enough that the can't tackle us because we have control of the arm and leg through trapping. Again, you know very little about wing chun. You don't need to generate power through the crouch. That doesn't work well in wing chun. We generate power through joint alignment, the elbow behind the fist, a slight body rotation and forward momentum, which allows us to produce amazing power in less than one foot, which a boxer could never do.

Is it safe to assume when using elbows that the majority of time your hands will be open or not.

You want to block your opponents punches with so much force to make them be afraid of getting hit in the face with that punch.

From what I heard wing chun does have ground form, but more of striking from the ground rather than grappling, I remember he also knows BJJ as well.
