Its funny how we all said "we want more Animated" and a monkey's paw finger curled shut, but even as a huge Animated fan, I still think this guy looks nice and can't wait for the Toxitron repaint that WILL happen Regardless if he loved or hated it, I wish DJW was still here so we could see him glaze or rinse this figure, we miss you everyday.
I'm genuinely suprised you went and got it. I love this guy personally as well as the other Animated lads not for what they look like, but what it represents as a franchise as a whole, like the WHOLE of Transformers. Like seriously, we probably would'nt have gotten ANYTHING Animated again if it wasn't for Legacy. And like, we're getting RiD, Rid 2015, hell we're getting Beast Machines Cheetor soon. BEAST MACHINES. THE ABSOLUTE STAIN ON THIS EARTH. WHICH I ADORE.
Something about this toy I liked might've been the "chunkiness" of it all, but I suppose that's due to me expecting all Transformers in the last few years to have a sort of uniform body shape to them, and this one comes in with a big upper body chest to make other big boys blush. Something about it enamors me.
I GASPED in awe when I saw this in my Patreon notifications. I have been waiting for you to review this as soon as it was revealed. I can understand why you don't like this as much as Bumblebee, but I can't help but love this. I'm turning 20 in April, I grew up on TFA, my G1 if you will. I'm the same age as the adult collectors who grew up on G1 when CHUG started. So seeing this, I feel old but also happy as this is what I imagined the first run of TFA in Generations would be like as it's different ywt recognisable, much like Classics Optimus. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M THE FIRST PATREON SHOUTOUT EITHER LIKE WHAT? Gavin I thank you so much
3:27 Have you not seen what the truck looks like in the show? The bumper over extends and the wheels sit way back, and in real life it wouldn't work - it'd tip over. TFA Optimus is a multi purpose future fire engine and can detach the rest of his fire truck ass for no good reason - which would be needed to offset the forward heaviness of a real truck.
I mean I get that. The animated show truck definitely doesnt have a realistic proportion to it. But looking at this side by side with the show model and the legacy truck doesn't do it well. Maybe if the "front" tires were more forward or the wheels larger it might look better. Idk.
Idk if they'd ever do it, but I'd love to see a full firetruck addition for this Prime. I'm sure it'd be rather Rodimus Prime-ish as a "trailer" and he didn't use it that much in the show beyond the beginning third or so, but it could make for better storage for his axe and add more playability to the figure.
@@optimistprime3192 People have speculated that the reason for Prime's feet hanging out so awkwardly in truck mode is for future trailer or Jetwing attachments. And the ports on his forearms and shoulders convince them further of that being the case.
THANK YOU for pointing out the bot mode proportions. Everyone says "oh he's spot-on," but then completely miss that HE DOESN'T HAVE AN ABDOMEN. His bulky chest just immediately transitions into his waist, his abs get swallowed up inside the windshield! What's the point???
As someone who grew up with Animated,in my opinion this figure is absolutely phenomenal; I absolutely love it just like the Prowl, I think the Bumblebee might be the only one that’s lacking in some aspects, but it’s still great.
The front wheels are actually a callback to the original illustration for Prime’s truck mode without the fire truck parts. They sat suuuuper far back on the truck and wouldn’t be able to keep the truck from falling on it’s face irl, so the designers hid those front wheels with the bumper to make it look as close to how the wheels on that art looked as they could. Honestly really cool detail once you notice it.
the front wheel being hidden reminds me of the actual cartoon look where he had 2 wheels on the back and none on the front. That's a clever way to make that work without having it not work because real life gravity isn't cartoon gravity.
To be screen accurate there must be no front wheels what so ever lol. To be honest "accuracy" isn't really a plus here, considering everything else isn't accurate. They didn't even created the toy around shows transformation scheme, just reused 80% of earth mode deluxe figure, so what's the point really?
I think in order to translate the animated design into a real-world object, there had to be front wheels on the figure. Otherwise, the two back wheels wouldn’t be able to support the weight of the front of the cap, and the figure wouldn’t be able to roll properly. I personally think they did a good job at concealing them.
call me crazy if you want, but i think i prefer the way the Legacy one looks over the original Voyager. i prefer the bulkiness over Legacy than the cartoon accurate look of the original tbh. also the original Voyager is HELLA hard to find for a good price so if i never get the original Voyager then im more than happy with the Legacy version also the Legacy version has better articulation and proper thigh swivels AND double jointed elbows that let them go all the way
The problem with this is called "The Total Recall Problem™". The 2012 movie, Total Recall, is alright! It's not bad. In a bubble, it does something's quite well but is generally just alright. Very forgettable. The original? It's a masterpiece. It didn't need remaking. It's a work of art. A real tour de force. This is Total Recall 2012. It does most things pretty ok , had good intentions, had talented people working on it but it's ultimately pointless and a waste of time making you think "why didn't I just pick up the original"? Tl/Dr? It's alright. Just nothing compared to the original 😂
Who looked at Prime and thought, “gee, I wonder if he has lips…” Seriously, as a kid I just accepted that the face plate was all there was to his mouth. Robots don’t need lips! They don’t have teeth and don’t eat (except for those Sharkticons and other animal themed bots). My radio makes plenty of noise and has no mouth.
Oh stop your whinging already, G1 Prime had his faceplate smashed multiple times during the Marvel comic, showing his mouth, and it was fine then - brutal even, especially after the battle with Unicron where he was dying, and it looked like a speaker. Orion Pax had a normal face in the 80s show, and that was fine. Optimus Primal almost always had a mouth, and it was fine then. But ever since Bay Optimus and Animated Optimus got mouths, I haven't been able to hear the end of it. They look fine! They're explicitly different takes on the character, and their faces work stylistically with their designs in mind! Bay Optimus looks serious and gruff, while Animated Optimus looks young and personable. Neither would be as impactful in their respective movies/show if we couldn't see their faces, I'd argue. I'd sooner complain about TFPrime Optimus having a conspicuous blank space where his nose should be... THAT always looked bad. Then again, TFPrime was bad in a lot of ways...
i think the problem is thata lot of people have ideas of what they want legacy to be or what they think it's trying to be that aren't what the designers are actually trying to do they aren't TRYING to make super accurate versions of the characters, they're trying to CHUG-ify them, i can see people not wanting that or thinking these designs aren't good like this but personally? i really do love all these updates, hell i even liked legacy bulkhead. some designs simply translate easier to being CHUG-ified than others, unicron trilogy fits right in no problem while things like animated and prime are vastly different i think what would please more people is if studio series, a line all about super screen accuracy at a mainline price, would step out of just movies and games and do series like animated and prime
I largely agree but this Prime sticks out so much visually even with wave mates. I have Windblade and animated Prowl next to 86 Hot Rod and the latest Elita and that all gels but if they wanted Animated to blend in with the overall CHUG aesthetic this was a miss. Appreciate the love, I'm buying versions of characters I wanted then but never had/lost, but just don;t think it's successful at reigning it all under one aesthetic. Armada still incredibly up though, begging for a Blurr and Demolishor. And I would be lying if I said I wouldn't grab a TFA Blitzwing. Moving these shows into SS is a terrific idea.
I fully understand what they're trying to do. That doesn't mean I suddenly think it's a not-painfully idiotic direction. Have you SEEN the prices of TFA figures online now? The very least HasTak should be doing is offering retro rereleases for TFA like they are for BW and G1, yet they haven't even done so for JP-G1/BW, or even the UT and 2007 movie toys yet. So yes, I am gonna complain that these highly-demanded designs are being done intentionally unfaithfully.
as a kid too busy with bionicles to be really super into transformers around the time animated happened not only did I miss out on the toys but also the show. so getting back into transformers (more specifically getting into it properly) I loved beast wars, but was too late to get the kingdom line stuff. with animated, this feels like a chance to get the toys I couldn't really get, with my own money even. I love the fact that they're even giving these almost 15 year old toys a makeover and going "alright have at them" because it gives me a chance to really have the best versions of characters in a plastic form without paying a limb for them in secondhand sales. they're not exactly the best and don't fit the style of animated but it feels like a bone was thrown my way. and I'm a bionicle fan. I'm used to cold, uncaring gestures from the corporations who decide when to make these things. rant over, I dont love these things but they are fun to put on a shelf and go "I am 24 and i like buying toys to display"
Honestly the back doesn't bother me all that much. I feel the truck is a good blend of the animated and legacy esthetic. Plus, I can forgive a wonky vehicle mode if the robot mode is solid and Legacy Animated Optimus probably has the cleanest robot mode I've seen in a while.
I remember when I first got the figure I questioned small front wheels so I looked up the animation model and realized the reason why those wheels are so small is because they’re not supposed to exist, the figure has accurate tire placement to the animation model (for the back 4 tires) and in order for to have it be able to role and not essentially constantly face plant they add those tires, I do kinda wish they were casted in the grey plastic instead of the black to make them seem less like actual tires
I'm looking forward to the upgrade kit that dna designs going to be releasing, Which will give him his final battle upgrade that will also double as The missing portion of the fire engine
Here’s my problem Prowl felt like a generations version of the animated design (which some didn’t like and I get that) But prime and bee don’t look like generations toys and they don’t look like animated toys They just look like robot cosplayers they look off
I only like this figure for the factor reminds me of the old McDonald's Optimus Prime you got unhappy meal because it was my first ever figure and it kind shares of proportions
I was on the fence about this guy, and waiting to hear the thoughts of the greatest TF Animated fan of all time. Now that I have it... I'm still on the fence
Thank you for being so damned honest with these reviews. Some people could learn a thing or two about this... For me Legacy has done a strange thing where I don't want the TFA stuff even though I love TFA and I actually want things from toylines/cartoons I've barely been bothered with - Armada Hotshot, fun guy. Transmetal 2, what even is that? It's a fun daft dragon that's what. The toy I want from last year the most is Armada Prime, whit?
These figures further prove that they just do not want to listen to the fans & just wanna G1 everything they possibly can do they can ram their member berries down our throats. Animated was/is the best toy line that captured there on screen designs so well & made what looked impossible, possible. When you look at how streamlined Animated was & managed to hide all the kibble away & years later the current stuff struggles with the most basic stuff. Hasbro should release some sort of "stars" line that takes the actual original molds of best sellers in all the lines & release them 😍😍😍
Personally i love how this guy looks, and as someone who doesnt own any amimated prime figures, imma get him. Although i do agree that the truck mode back section is abysmal though.. But hey, there's an empty spot on my Prime shelf right now, and he looks great to fill it in, so imma get him
Idk if someone has said it yet but there is an alternate headsculpt of this figure with a mouthplate and on the back where the light bar is are some unused holes. My theory is that this will get a Jetwing-whatever-Optimus retool in the near future.
Fun fact: Legacy Blitzwing's gauntlets fit suspiciously perfectly on Optimus here. Peg them into his hands and there's a slot on the gauntlet that happens to be the exact same size and position as the tabs on Prime's forearms...
I really like the bot mode, but I wish the designers based the altmode on the 'completed' firetruck instead of just the cab. might be a big ask considering the amount of plastic it already has, but it would've meant more mass in the back to hide the feet and make the altmode overall more cohesive.
It's so strange how Legacy has handled the "G1-ification" of different shows. I unironically like Legacy Bulkhead and Knockout as different interpretations of the characters, Strongarm was more fun than I expected, Armada seems to have survived the translation the best, but Animated feels the most weirdly compromised.
I’d really like these toys to be reused as some different characters like we’re getting with Chromia (who looks incredible). Make Animated Bumblebee into one of the Throttlebots, and maybe make Prime into Pyro
My biggest problem with this thing isn't even all the real problems with it, it's that he doesn't have the yellow stripes on his head and that makes me sad and fuck trying to work with yellow paint to get them on there myself
Eeeeehhhh hes ok isnt he? Though realising that the transformation of the top half is basically the deluxe Animated Prime from back in the day just reminded me how much better that toy was, also had a great axe, and came with a free Megatron. I guess I'm glad these new Animated toys exist, but I KNOW I'm just buying them out of obligation. What a mug!
It drives me crazy when prime fans say that animated got faithful recreations while prime was given the shaft. like no man not at all. this things enormous bulbous chest is more reminiscent of a high-moon design then a Derrick j Wyatt design
It's funny how Animated fans react to Prime and Prowl, because I (who never watched Animated) like them but dislike Bumblebee I wonder if they were specifically trying to capture non-fans? It's just a shame it came at the expense of the actual fans, very weird choice for a line targeting adult collectors tbh One thing we can agree on is that truck mode though. It's... just his legs. Maybe one day we'll get a Prime whose back half actually looks like the back half of a truck?
Ngl I also agree that he’s way too heckin lorge; bUt a way I found to fix it is to put the mushroom peg up one notch. The grill actually lines up w the faux one, the back can still tan in to the now empty lil notch, and the pegs also can now tan into the wheels, so it still stays o hood together in robot mode and proportionally looks sO much closer to the og design. Almost like it was intentional but then got scrapped last minute cuz they had to shorten the alt mode cuz of higher up budget cuts for next to no reason 🤔 hmmmmmmm
yeah, that vehicle mode looks like you took out a component of a larger combining vehicle and reviewed it on its lonesome I am interested in seeing what the remold this into, though
I just don't understand alt mode kibble like feet and hands. I get robot kibble, but Transformers should fundamentally be "what robot can we get from this vehicle" not "what vehicle can we get from this robot".
I think if the torso didnt compress as much and the thighs were longer, as you said in the video, proportionally it would look much nicer. probably slightly taller too, so as tall as the original. It being based on the deluxe has me questioning why they didn’t reuse the leg engineering but just swap the slider for a double joint too. Maybe replace the hidden wheels with a small wheel under the mid bumper that was cut to keep it from tipping forward
A fun figure can still be shit at what it's trying to be, people seem to not understand this. Is Legacy Animated Optimus a good figure? Yes. Is it a good Animated Optimus? Fucking *_no._* Is Legacy "Prime Bulkhead" a good figure? Yes. Is it a good Prime Bulkhead? Fucking *_no._* While I want a figure that's screen accurate and not geewunnified, I'd be more than happy for the alt mode to not have the wheels as close together as they were in animation and be more how they were on the original toys, so they actually make sense and don't fall forwards without dinky hidden trolly wheels being shoved in the front.
I got him last month. Overall he's good but the only complained I got is he is abit top heavy? Like due to the way his leg transformed (split apart), they are on the weaker side in terms of tolarance. With that in mind, he does topple over if you slide him across a smooth surface in bot mode! Yea I also agree the truck mode at the rear is awful.
I am genuinely surprised at just how much I've enjoyed playing with all three of the Legacy Animated lads. All of them are very good toys indeed. And I get that they're different to the originals, yeah - but isn't that actually better? They're complementing them, not replacing them. You're getting two versions of the same characters, should you choose to embrace that. And, most importantly, nearly everybody doesn't have the original toys. I can just get the Legacy ones from Kapow all minty-fresh, rather than having to scour eBay for a 'bargain' that arrives covered in chewing gum and scratches. Certainly kids can't pester their Gran to buy the original TA Optimus from Argos. In short, it's not a competition. Two things can be good at the same time. But the Universe Legends Optimus toy is better than the Animated Voyager. :)
one thing people don't talk about enough that really bothers me is how far the grill is recessed into the cab, its super annoying and isnt accurate to anything (still buying this tho)
I really don't get you Animated people, how can this be bad considering the original animated OP? Like a lot of these complaints are kinda valid also for the original imho, like what is that back of the truck on the original? Or the integration of the axe of the original, which doesn't work if you don't have the gun
So basically; good figure on its own, but it ain’t faithful to the Animated style and what is that mess of a truck back? It’s rare for me to see you not completely dig a figure. Unless I missed a video…probably the case.
I gotta say i was not looking forward to this review as i genuinely really enjoy this toy and seeing you constantly trash it before you got it made me kinda sad. Glad you like some of the toy at least, that's a pleasant surprise! I honestly don't see the problem with the vehicle mode. Yes the feet aren't ideal but i'll honestly take it over having them just stick out the back and the cab...well that's just Animated Optimus' cab. What's the issue
nothing on legacy united is good for me, and crazy is me getting more hyped on teh rock dudes. original animated optimus is infinte better then this... same with prowl . legacy prowl is vomiting awful.

I'm looking forward to the upgrade kit that dna designs going to be releasing, Which will give him his final battle upgrade that will also double as The missing portion of the fire engine
We need legacy safeguard. He was the only animated combiner.
Here’s my problem
Prowl felt like a generations version of the animated design (which some didn’t like and I get that)
But prime and bee don’t look like generations toys and they don’t look like animated toys
They just look like robot cosplayers they look off
I only like this figure for the factor reminds me of the old McDonald's Optimus Prime you got unhappy meal because it was my first ever figure and it kind shares of proportions
*I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO BUY THIS TOY*
...unless it gets confirmed they're not doing a Motormaster repaint because I want that one oodles more.
I see this as a Mature all grown Up animated Optimus Prime
I’m waiting for the patron who’s favorite toy is Legacy Animated Optimus.
Hasbro should release some sort of "stars" line that takes the actual original molds of best sellers in all the lines & release them 😍😍😍
Prime really let himself go after animated went off the air.
@@manjackson2772 i threw those pieces of junk away as soon as i got Blitzwing but cool fact
I really like the bot mode, but I wish the designers based the altmode on the 'completed' firetruck instead of just the cab. might be a big ask considering the amount of plastic it already has, but it would've meant more mass in the back to hide the feet and make the altmode overall more cohesive.
My biggest gripe is why doesn’t he have his mask as an option
Just wait until they create a Legacy Animated Strika or Oilslick.
A welcome alternative to spending 150.00 on eBay for a used or 300.00 MISB original.
Prime is getting repainted into Animated Motormaster!
My biggest problem with this thing isn't even all the real problems with it, it's that he doesn't have the yellow stripes on his head and that makes me sad and fuck trying to work with yellow paint to get them on there myself
My problem with most Legacy/WFC figures I’d that their waists don’t really seem to exist…
This figure would have been really great in my eyes if they hadn’t screwed up the front wheels.
Great review from a great guy.
It's funny how Animated fans react to Prime and Prowl, because I (who never watched Animated) like them but dislike Bumblebee
I wonder if they were specifically trying to capture non-fans? It's just a shame it came at the expense of the actual fans, very weird choice for a line targeting adult collectors tbh
One thing we can agree on is that truck mode though. It's... just his legs. Maybe one day we'll get a Prime whose back half actually looks like the back half of a truck?
Animated Prime isn't suppose to have front wheels at all. The show design just as the cab floating on air.
I don't own the original toy, so this is a great buy for me!
Great review!
The hidden front wheels is to homage the animation model which had no wheels there at all.
And it is horrible!
Also, yowza, I've never seen the Animated truck from the back. That's over of the worst attempts I've ever seen of hiding Prime's feet.
Here's hoping the Animated Wasp toy that was in the listings turns out to be a good one too
Ngl I also agree that he’s way too heckin lorge; bUt a way I found to fix it is to put the mushroom peg up one notch.
Hope you're having a good day
yeah, that vehicle mode looks like you took out a component of a larger combining vehicle and reviewed it on its lonesome
I am interested in seeing what the remold this into, though
It’s not as good as the original animated toy, but I’m nowhere near rich enough enough to collect the OG toys. He shall do in the meantime.
Fucking *_no._*
While I want a figure that's screen accurate and not geewunnified, I'd be more than happy for the alt mode to not have the wheels as close together as they were in animation and be more how they were on the original toys, so they actually make sense and don't fall forwards without dinky hidden trolly wheels being shoved in the front.
gonna wait for the leader version of hip with the trailer (I don't mind skipping out)
I got him last month.
If I want to play with an Animated Prime figure, I'll just play with my original Animated Prime figure. Screw this thing. I won't cave.
3:39 my thoughts exacly
im glad im not the only one who hates the g1 added on part
But.... Gaaaaaaaawin!
You forgot about the inner details of the chest plate, and the ones on the top!
Gaaaaawin!
No I didn't
i do enjoy the robot mode on this guy but i agree the truck is Dreadful. its so squished
one thing people don't talk about enough that really bothers me is how far the grill is recessed into the cab, its super annoying and isnt accurate to anything (still buying this tho)
As someone who grew up with the show but sadly got hardly any of it's toys, would you recommend I get this or the original second hand first?
get the Legacy one. it has better articulation than the original Voyager
I really don't get you Animated people, how can this be bad considering the original animated OP? Like a lot of these complaints are kinda valid also for the original imho, like what is that back of the truck on the original? Or the integration of the axe of the original, which doesn't work if you don't have the gun
Thems the breaks haha
I want him now
So basically; good figure on its own, but it ain’t faithful to the Animated style and what is that mess of a truck back?
It’s rare for me to see you not completely dig a figure. Unless I missed a video…probably the case.
Better Nate than lever.
SCREEEEEOOONK
@@TRDQ Okay?
@@muisverriet I'm glad you've seen it my way ❤️
tired of the chug designs and it would have been better if they actually attempted to replicate the cartoon instead
I say the new a better then the oringal figure
they should have reissued the old fig with update modification rather than this awful fig..
Bad take, this was better than the animated toys, sorry. Better design, better art direction, everything.
Cool
Ah, the Toxic Fandom.
Animated's design for optimus wasnt special it was ugly. And i watched the entire show it sucks. Same with sentinel's design
Haha shut up
nothing on legacy united is good for me, and crazy is me getting more hyped on teh rock dudes.
original animated optimus is infinte better then this... same with prowl . legacy prowl is vomiting awful.
