I actually worked on this game as a QA tester at EA Canada a very long time ago. At the time EA had a division where they would try to publish somewhat unknown games that had already been released. The original game was released in Japan first, not by EA, then published by EA for North America release with different box art, many bug fixes and game play tuning based on our feedback to the dev team. They also added the real brands into the game. All the trick names were completely wrong in the Japanese version, I was the only one who skated on the team so I wrote up a lot of bugs on the wacky trick names. Lots of stuff slipped through do to time, but at least a lot of the trick names are called out correctly.
This little story made me appreciate this game much more. I remember seeing it quite a bit back in the day but never played it myself. Never too late to try.
Street Sk8er was one of the most important games of my childhood. The game is confusing and complete nonsense, but being a kid I just got into pretty easily. This game is so unreal that is like a cartoon, I guess this is why I was so fascinated by it when I was a young boy, even the characters seemed like out of a cartoon series. It was also my first experience with punk rock and even rock in general, I'm from Sao Paulo and it definitely wasn't the most popular music style and I didn't have MTv so when I got to listen that kind of stuff, it changed me for good. I own this game a lot, I even got back to it through emulator here 'cause I was missing it. Game is dated indeed but it's a lot of fun, doesn't require much strategy but a big effort will have to be put on hard mode.
Yeah but did you know you could listen to the disc as a CD? Thought that was so cool back in the day. There was some MTV snowboarding game that was also playable as a CD. Made me try it on all my games ha!
This was my favorite childhood video game. I don't even know how many times I rented it from Blockbuster until I finally found it for sale years later. Classic.
I'm 30 years old and pretty out of shape compared to my teen years, but this is the game that influenced me to start skating. My friend had an old KB Toys skateboard that he had gotten for his birthday like 3 years prior that had been sitting in his parents garage the entire time. The bearings were completely shot, the board itself was warped, and the trucks were plastic. We could pretty much do nothing but stationary tricks, or pre-set the board on a grind and try to slide down. I miss those days.
the first time i watched one of your videos i was so thrilled cus i expected something way more amateur, but you seem to know what you're doing. you deserve way more views! cheers.
Front side 360-late back side 360. . .which is physically impossible. I love it. I played this game as a kid, totally silly, but was interesting for the time.
This game was incredible. I chose this game over Tony Hawk but after a month I went and got Tony Hawk and absolutely loved that. Street sk8r was great for it's time and was a great precursor to Tony Hawks game
Tony Hawk loved Top Skater. That's why THPS was originally a racing style game. Same reason he made Ride. The only place I positively know there is a Top Skater arcade is at Disney Quest in Orlando,FL.
Man I want to watch this video but funnily enough I just ordered this game last night to relive some of my childhood. I want to relive the experience myself so I have to just thumbs up the video and wait to watch until I play this again.
I've had this game since I was like 7 years old, I remember beating it as a little kid. A couple weeks ago me and my buddy we trying to speed run old skateboarding games(thps, 3extreme, etc.) and we were struggling to beat street sk8er. We couldn't find a viable strat and we were so confused as to how do certain tricks. Little kid me could beat this game by adult me can't lol
I remember playing the hell out of this when it came out. It was fun for the time but even then I wanted a realistic skating game. Kinda cool for nostalgia being the first skating game.
snowboard games like cool boarders and steep slope sliders are also worth looking at, not to mention ReBoot on the PS1, which is a shooter/skate adventure game predating Airblade...
No BS, this was the very first game I got with my PS1 in 1999. SMH, blast from the past indeed. Listen, I’m a THPS fan but I still have massive love for this game and Thrasher: Skate or Destroy. They laid the groundwork for a SKATE to be the beloved series that it is today. Respect to the OGs. 🖤✊🏽
I enjoyed the game for what it was, but mostly used it for the soundtrack while driving. (it's one of the playstation games where you could listen to the music in a cd player) but I do have a question, why did skateboard trucks back in the 90's have 6 holes for mounting?? I know they did away with it a few years later. keep up the good videos.
Have you tried Skate or Die: Bad 'n Rad on the Game Boy? It's a fairly overlooked game that's not much like the NES titles. Half of the levels are 2D platformers, while the other half are top-down obstacle courses. There's a lot of really bizarre enemies and bosses, and I had a lot of fun. I'd encourage you to give it a try, since you're attempting to review every skateboarding game ever made.
Actually, thps 1 was supposed to be based around top skater. Ice bears interviewed a neversoft dev and he said they were, at initial stages, playing top skater all the time and were told to base it on it
Oh my god, 2xtreme, I had that as a very small child but was too young to really play with any degree of skill. I'd love a review of that game if you're feelin' it, I barely remember it and don't know if I ever did much of the content, I was like five or six years old. It seemed cool from what I remember, though.
The American PS1 jewel cases look far better than European ones. I live in Europe, so the PS1 games I have are the European cases, which were way more bulky. Also, damn, this was EA's first foray into skateboarding. You'd never have thought they would've made one of the best skating games of all time.
At first I thought this was the arcade game "top skater" that I loved as a kid. I can't find any info on it but I feel like they are somehow connected. A lot of the elements in Street Sk8er that you disliked made a lot more sense in the arcade simulator Top Skater. Things like timers and only needing to ollie to perform trick worked because you would get a game over if time ran out and you could only really pop the tail on the fake simulator board. Curious what you think. Edit:just realized you mentioned top skater. I still say this is a "remake"
Hey, I got a question for your ask rad rat series, that really puzzles me. It is basically: what are nollie lipslides? A lipslide can be defined as a boardslide where your tail goes over the obstacle instead of your nose. you could also say that the popping end of the board goes over the rail, because that's what actually makes the trick harder than boardslides. but what defines the trick when you go nollie? if I nollie into a boardslide, which means popping my nose and making it cross the rail/ledge/coping, I would never call that a lipslide. on the other hand if I pop the nose and shift the tail across, that maybe feels like "nollieing into a lipslide", but it takes the challenge away of making the popping end of your board go over the obstacle. for the same reason 'halfcap boardslides' are not called 'halfcap lipslides', right? What do you make of it? sorry for overthinking this...
If the front truck goes over first, it's a boardslide, even when nollie. Nollie lips are a way to start learning lipslides. If you are fakie, you're rolling backwards, so what would be the back truck while nollie, is actually the front truck because you are fakie. That means that a half cab boardslide is the fakie equivalent of the nollie lip slide.
I think that is the most common definition. But you're definitely taking away what makes a lipslide "special" and difficult. I agree that a half cab boardslide is the fakie equivalent of the nollie lip slide. But that makes it all the more awkward. Because at least in vert skating, a fakie lipslide would be the exact other thing: popping fakie into what looks like a regular lip slide. So when you go fakie, it is crucial that the "popping end" goes over the coping, but not when doing a nollie.
a Website sounds like a good idea, besides I wanna play basically all these games. you could have a nice organized method of doing that. Amazon links or useful emulators, etc. grow a community and maybe post tips for some of the games youve reviewed for the less than patient gamer. haha
What up with people putting there wheels in the freezer to make them harder, faster, etc. does this really work ? Please talk about this! Is it just a gimmick ?
The tricks were hilariously awesome though. That's it... I think the tricks are more determined by your speed and height, but yeah, you have almost no control over what you do.
There is a game called like California sports or something from the snes genesis era that has a vert skating segment, aloo g with hackney sack... so not really a "skateboarding" game
I remember being pretty excited when I bought this, then I played it... It was very underwhelming. I completed it then never touched it again. The fact you have virtually zero control in the air totally ruins it.
To play Top Skater you can download a Sega Model2 emulator and the rom for top skater. I use a ps2 controller with a USB adapter to play. It loses some of the charm because you're not standing on a skateboard to play it but it's still a lot of fun and brings back memories. I use the dpad for turning. X for ollie, triangle for nollie, and L and R buttons for level and character select
I think it was less that Tony Hawk was copying Street Sk8er and more that they were both copying Top Skater. I much preferred Street Sk8er 2, Stage 1 of the first game is so infuriating
it seems the way the gameplay is designed is literally exactly like Top Skater. It might actually just be a rip off of the game. But Top Skater is way better than this in terms of execution
Street Sk8er is actually heavily inspired by Top Skater. You can play it through the Nebula Sega Model 2 emulator. Also... no mention of Saho, the unlockable inline skating ninja?
I worked at an arcade in the 90's and early 2000's. Top Skater always pissed me off. The board was so weird and clunky. Plus everybody beat the shit out of it all the time and you could never calibrate it right haha.
Wow, I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years! I always thought it was just called sk8. I could never find any info about it. I remember it being absolutely HORRIBLE.
I hated this game even as a kid I knew it was bad. I sucked at skating street I wanted to play a game where I cud skate street ndni did not find it there..
Great review, this game reminds me a lot of Segas Top skater arcade game which you mentioned at the start. Perhaps this game was a response to making a home console copy of Top skater.

malcolm341 to the top.
wow.. that is awesome..
yea those times where QA testing was actually a thing. lookin at you Pro skater 5
Why you lying
This little story made me appreciate this game much more. I remember seeing it quite a bit back in the day but never played it myself. Never too late to try.
Put the game disc in a traditional CD player... it plays the whole soundtrack!
Yep !!!!! Badass ost !!!!
best soundtrack of all the games!
Loooved this soundtrack! I became a huge Less Than Jake and Weston fan all because of it :)
I loved this game in my childrenhood, and today I still like it.
Street Sk8er was one of the most important games of my childhood. The game is confusing and complete nonsense, but being a kid I just got into pretty easily. Just gotta say, the soundtrack to this game was excellent.
Trevor Broadbent that was definitely the best part of this game, discovered all through this who are now 20 years on my favourite band
@@tom5677 this game is cool, music is average
Yeah but did you know you could listen to the disc as a CD? Thought that was so cool back in the day. There was some MTV snowboarding game that was also playable as a CD. Made me try it on all my games ha!
Yeah for sure, I went and downloaded an iso of this game like 10 years ago just to hear the music lol.
This was my favorite childhood video game. I don't even know how many times I rented it from Blockbuster until I finally found it for sale years later. Classic.
I wonder if it'd be possible to find a rom of Top Skater and use the Tony Hawk Ride skateboard controller for it
I'm 30 years old and pretty out of shape compared to my teen years, but this is the game that influenced me to start skating. My friend had an old KB Toys skateboard that he had gotten for his birthday like 3 years prior that had been sitting in his parents garage the entire time. *MEDIC*!
Street skater 2 was fun, played it for weeks on end. I loved the movies in that game too. I've seen better days, good music in it.
the first time i watched one of your videos i was so thrilled cus i expected something way more amateur, but you seem to know what you're doing. you deserve way more views! cheers.
It is amazing seeing your channel growing ! Keep up the good work man
fs 360 late bs 360 could theoretically be done, but only by kids on Instagram.
hahaha xD
And with a stupid footplant thrown in. And cut off jean cuffs.
So the kids are really great, eh?
yea i do them all the time along with frontflip late backflips
the joke seems to go over everyone's head here
Medic!! Haha I loved this game when I was a kid. It was pretty ridiculous but I was so young I didn't know any better.
Front side 360-late back side 360. . .which is physically impossible. I love it. I played this game as a kid, totally silly, but was interesting for the time.

I havent seen this game in so long i played it when I was 4 on the ps1 what a trip man its been a long time
Tony Hawk loved Top Skater. That's why THPS was originally a racing style game. Same reason he made Ride. The only place I positively know there is a Top Skater arcade is at Disney Quest in Orlando,FL.
DisneyQuest is gone now :(

This was basically my 1st punk cd. The tracklist played on regular players
I used to play it when i was 5 years Old! Miss those old days
great review, Rad Rat!
btw, ever heard of a PC game called Boards and Blades? if so, try checking it out
I remember playing a demo of this game and thinking it was meh but it's cool seeing what was influenced by it.
I remember playing the hell out of this when it came out. It was fun for the time but even then I wanted a realistic skating game. Kinda cool for nostalgia being the first skating game.
Can you do a video on Shawn Palmer Pro Snowboarder? It's very good and is closely affiliated with Thps
Do you still have that copy of lunar silver star story complete? If so I'm insanely jealous! One of the best games ever made!
You gotta play the kid character, his nunchuk grab is sick.
snowboard games like cool boarders and steep slope sliders are also worth looking at, not to mention ReBoot on the PS1, which is a shooter/skate adventure game predating Airblade...

0:50 Skate or die 2 review please
Down here in Denver there's an arcade with a "720" machine. All the games are free (you just pay to get in). It rules.
I used to love that game, but it was hard as hell.
I loved this game as a kid!
I enjoyed the game for what it was, but mostly used it for the soundtrack while driving. Do some nes reviews! T and C surf, skate...skate or die series... and 720 skateboarding!!!
My biggest memory of this game is putting it in my CD player lol.

U have to review the skate game where u stand on the board irl to control the person in the game
I played this when I was a little kid, still have it lol

This brings me some memories
PS1 and this game it reminds why I like this more than Tony Hawk. You should play the sequel.
Hey man what Neal Stephenson book is that I see behind you????
The first PlayStation Skater game before Tony Hawk. Such an awesome game
Will you review Tony Hawk American Wasteland?
The American PS1 jewel cases look far better than European ones. I live in Europe, so the PS1 games I have are the European cases, which were way more bulky.
Also, damn, this was EA's first foray into skateboarding. You'd never have thought they would've made one of the best skating games of all time.
Skitchin for inline on Genesis for sure. But I'm not sure about skateboarding.
Fun fact: this game is free on the PS3.
At first I thought this was the arcade game "top skater" that I loved as a kid. I can't find any info on it but I feel like they are somehow connected. Please review Project 8! That was my favorite Tony Hawk game!
Ooooh I love your videos! :D
I remember playing this in a demo 😮
It's got a lot of accurate tricks, but does it have any accurate hardflips?
Love this channel!
Just doing the whole "like&coment" "algarythym" thing..
This game would be awesome if it came out on the N64 back in the day.
btw just found your stuff, diggin' it my dude SeemsGood

Yeah, I agree it's dumb, but it is what it is.
when will you review the EA skate series
a Website sounds like a good idea, besides I wanna play basically all these games. you could have a nice organized method of doing that. Amazon links or useful emulators, etc. grow a community and maybe post tips for some of the games youve reviewed for the less than patient gamer. haha
I think Bonobo was censored in the European version and changed to a random kid! :D
No street skater 2???
What up with people putting there wheels in the freezer to make them harder, faster, etc. does this really work ? Please talk about this! Is it just a gimmick ?
That's odd. Sounds like a gimmick to me. Initially, sure, the wheel will be harder but once you start riding it's going to heat up.
Jackbskate I think they would get softer and more chances in breaking because of the humidity.
The tricks were hilariously awesome though. That's it... I think the tricks are more determined by your speed and height, but yeah, you have almost no control over what you do.
Damn I forgot about 2xtreme lol 😉
This game is the closest thing to a home port of Top Skater.
I bought this game when it first dropped and played the hell out of it. When THPS came out, I refused to play it because this was my game.
There is a game called like California sports or something from the snes genesis era that has a vert skating segment, aloo g with hackney sack... so not really a "skateboarding" game

This game remember Sega Model2 Top Skater
this is my favorite skate game. km pretty sure its free on psn store
I remember being pretty excited when I bought this, then I played it... It was very underwhelming. I completed it then never touched it again. The fact you have virtually zero control in the air totally ruins it.
wasnt there a roller blader in this game at some point?
To me this sounds like a solid, but poorly executed gameplay loop. What is it with Downhill that makes it so hard to emulate?
To play Top Skater you can download a Sega Model2 emulator and the rom for top skater. I use a ps2 controller with a USB adapter to play. It loses some of the charm because you're not standing on a skateboard to play it but it's still a lot of fun and brings back memories.

First game with a young Steve Caballero playable carachter. Oh wait thats a monkey
I thought it was your mother.
YOU CAN PLAY TOP SKATER WITH THE MODEL 2 EMULATOR
Medic!
I think it was less that Tony Hawk was copying Street Sk8er and more that they were both copying Top Skater. I much preferred Street Sk8er 2, Stage 1 of the first game is so infuriating
You can play Top Skater using a Model 2 emulator! I used to play it all the time on my computer in college.

Do you have it? I cant find it i want to play this again
8:11 - Monkey, huh? 🤔
this game its free now bois
Buttskater by ButtGames™️
Couldn’t you be a fruit booting female ninja in this game? I’m pretty sure I played the hell out of this game as a pre teen, and unlocked a ninja!
classic ! haha
Wow, I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years! I always thought it was just called sk8. I could never find any info about it. I remember it being absolutely HORRIBLE.
fuck i hated this game when it was new
I hated this game even as a kid I knew it was bad. I sucked at skating street I wanted to play a game where I cud skate street ndni did not find it there..
It looks awful. No real brands or skaters makes it seem really cheap
Great review, this game reminds me a lot of Segas Top skater arcade game which you mentioned at the start.
Perhaps this game was a response to making a home console copy of Top skater.
