Transfer Case Chain Replacement/Jeep Grand cherokee WK2 QT2

- It has been a long few weeks trying to diagnose the snapping noise on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have narrowed it down to either a stretched Tcase chain, or a blown rear differential. Hoping it is the ladder. In this video we will be replacing the potentially stretched chain. If your Grand Cherokee is making this same sound you may want to watch.

When dude says “or a real shop” I felt it in my soul… been watching your videos the last few nights and have now subscribed. Love my 2014 gc Laredo even tho it’s a problem child…
Yea those were some hard words to hear haha. I’m glad you enjoy the channel. I appreciate the support
@ I feel you man I do 90% of my own work… Those times I gotta break down n take it somewhere… ohhh mannn….
Dang dude, when it rains it pours! I feel this so hard, every time i work on my jeep it never goes as planned! Hope your luck turns around soon! 🙏
I guess i can't complain about having a years worth of back logged footage, so when my jeep goes down i can still put up videos. 😬
@@FearlessTrailhawk I always try to get ahead with videos and it never works. I need a good month of just being out with no other responsibilities.
Holy crap what a job to take on. Nice work. I'd never be able to have the patience to do something like this haahhaah 😂😎
I realized after that I didn’t have the patience lol
I had a similar noise on my 2015 wk2 with the single speed transfercase. A good test to see if its a transfercase for me was to brake stand it. (Got noise, transfercase. no noise, something else) I went through 3 transfercases on mine and every single one ended up being the output shaft bearings. I hope you get it figured out soon though.
** side note, take to dealer or a shop for diagnosis, decline repair, bring it home, and fix yourself. Thats my method when im not sure. Works every time.
@@Night_Fury_jk good advice. I took it to my boys shop and he hasn’t diagnosed it yet. He thinks it could be the diff. But I’m going to mention the output shaft.
You got me beat cause I’ve never messed with a transfer case haha you about to be ASE certified!!!
Haha. It wasn’t fun. Big thanks to @xeon_overland
@@Fuelnomenal give it time I'm gonna be a WK2 master tech before long lol. Mines due for doing the lifters/rockers/cams and I really want to get an MPVi2 to start fiddling with the ECU at some point.
@@xeon_overland oh boy 😅 master mechanic for sure!!!
This is just the video I was looking for (I hope). I have mine on ramps pulled apart in the garage rn trying to figure out how the hell I’m gonna get it back up by myself. Looks like I’m gonna need another Jack or two haha. Thanks!
@@leoromp6385 my apologies ahead of time. It’s not the best step by step video. But yes two people is a good idea
27:28 That face has been the EXACT face I’ve been making every time I dish out more money to maintain this WortHog of a vehicle 😂 Like: Yup, One thing done, One thing still incomplete, One thing for sure one less dollar for me
Yup that is the look. It’s a hard feeling. But for me, I chose to go out and beat up my Jeep for a living so it’s all on me I know what comes with it haha. It’s all about learning. For me it’s mostly the stress of needing back and ready quickly for more videos.
I commend you on staying cool calm and collect. Don't know if I would have been able to.
@@ckellawan ha. Appreciate it. But I like to get in there and see how it all works. Just would have been more pleasant with a lift
@@ckellawan the many breaks taken to avoid thrown wrenches were not recorded 😂
I have been chasing down gremlins in my 2005 WK. After 8 months of not being able to figure it out, and taking it to 2 different shops, I had no choice but to try another shop.
I did not feel to bad when after 3 days, there 4 master mechanics said they have no idea. still in the shop, they are trying to figure it out.
Good luck with finding what is going on in your vehicle. I hope it is what you think it is. These things makes you want to bang your head against the wall.
@@PreparedOverlander man your telling me! On the bright side, I have a few new parts lol
Curious for your take on whether these mechanical failures you're encountering are reasonable from your POV giving the conditions you are subjecting your WK2 to (which is fning awesome btw, thank you for that) -- or if you feel it should be a little more robust or resilient at some of these failure points. Either way, thank you for your continued content contributions to WK2 community!
Hey man! Thank you so much. That’s a great question. Considering the conditions I put my Jeep through it has held up pretty darn well. I mean let’s face it, the WK2 was not built for what I do. Keep in mind that these parts that have failed are original from 2015 that have never endured this type of stress and then I come along and start wheeling it. On top of that take the rear sway bar off and really stress these old parts haha. I feel my failures were to be expected. It would be nice to have more robust components but there just hasn’t been a real market for it up until the new WL came out and now everyone wants to build their wk2. I think what I would like most is components that are easier to repair in the field. Like a drive shaft that is one straight shaft with u joints on the end. Instead of needing a whole new shaft.
Or a re build kit for the diff
The biggest reason for a transfer case failure on the WK2, believe it or not, is not replacing tires in sets or pairs. The full-time 4wd system doesn't do well with tires of different diameters, so it's important to replace tires in pairs.
@@Japplesnap I’ve heard that. Fortunately I haven’t needed to replace tires yet.
@@GrandExploration Someone replaced them....those aren't the original tires....
Hi, great video, I am replacing it too, quick question how did you switch from one side of the transfer to the other when aligning the chain and closing the sandwich.... on the other hand it shock me when you still had the noise at the end. What was the final outcome... it was the DIfferential? did you make a video?.... I sent you a message on instagram to get the manual... thanks in advance for your dedication on this great channel, Kudos for the adventure videos...
@@eduardovernet hey thanks. 🙏. I actually had to pull the whole case, flip it on one end and sandwich the two half’s. Wasn’t fun. It was the rear differential in the end. I had the shop do it. So no video unfortunately. I don’t actually have the manual. I can find it but if you message @xeon_overland he can get it faster than me.
I had the same grease around the joint on my driveshaft. Yeah it looks like black oil. Slung all the grease out, failed, and couldn’t drive it. Just spent the past few weeks trying to find a driveshaft. Just a heads up.
They told me it looked good but I replaced it anyway
At about 18 minutes in, you can see a creeper with a headrest. What creeper or headrest are you using in the video? That looks very comfortable for your head. I want one!
These belonged to my buddy. I believe he bought them at oreilys auto parts.
Do you think you could remove the detent and put the Chain and cover on with out removing the front half of the case also???. Similar to qt1 repair. Rather than drop the entire case
To be honest I’m not quite sure. If you can some how keep both sprockets on one side of the case then you’ll be golden.
I’ve heard the clutch packs in the diff or transfer case can go bad and make that noise
Hi Jon, can you give me some info on your blackout pieces around your car. I have just bought a 2016 granite grand and I'm basically following your setup. I've already ordered all the blackout grill pieces and will plasti-dip the emblems. I've ordered the blackout kits for the tail lights etc too.
But the bits I'm unsure about is the chrome window trims and door handles. What did you do?
Thanks 🙏 from Australia
How goes it? Yea, so with window trim I actually used plastic dip as well and just covered the windows but, they do have vinyl wrap for the window trim you can get off amazon too. For the handles and my side mirrors I purchased black overlays from Amazon and they go right over the original chrome and they have held up for a couple years now. I believe I have a link to them in my description I think.
Thanks Jon, you mean the snap on plastic door handle covers? No link in your description for them but if that's the ones then I have seen them. Saw some reviews saying they leave a bit of a lip behind which doesn't feel very quality...
But if yours are different let me know 🙂 love your vids
@@ryansmith7276 on mine I can see a tiny bit of chrome left if you look on the inside. But yes you’re right. They are cheap. I would do a wrap but I beat my Jeep up so haha. I’m pretty sure I would have scraped off vinyl wrap 10 times over by now.
Did you determine for sure what the snapping noise was?
@@jtbaren6483 it ended up being the rear differential
@@GrandExploration I feel you! I've done work on one thing with my Durango and it ended up being something completely different! Glad you got it figured out.
This video made me sad bro I hope you are able to fix it. I love my WK2 but they scare me sometimes.
Yea I wish I had more time to take care of it myself but I ended up giving it to my buddy’s shop. Should have it back this week.
Are those retreaded tires
@@Forgedpg no. Original Yokohama Geolandars
that is not engine oil it's from the engine mount.

QTI doesn't have a transfer case. QTII and QDII have a transfer case.
QT1 has a transfer case but there's only one gear in it. QT2 has 2 gears for high/low range.
@@xeon_overland It's not a transfer case, it's a center differential. A QT1 Grand Cherokee is essentially AWD, not really 4WD.
Does it have a chain?
@@JapplesnapQT1 uses the MP3010, QT2/QD2 uses the MP3023. Both are transfer cases with a clutch pack that engages the chain drive gear to send power to the front wheels. The only difference between the two is the presence of the extra gear on the main shaft for low range and selector arm components on the MP3023. Both transfer cases are mechanically capable of 2WD by disengagement of the clutch pack and this is used in Chevy applications but Jeep chose not to program the TCCM to allow you to select it. If you pull the TCCM fuse (77 if memory serves) you can make it fail over to RWD. I learned a TON about the transfer cases doing this project and have the entire technical manual on them if you're interested.
That Cv joint is trash. It probably mud water and grease once the rubber boot leaks they are done.
