When Trying To Help Someone Goes Wrong

  • I wasn't going to upload this video. This was the video that was originally planned for Wednesday where Yonnie and I took Big Dave the proceeds of the GoFundMe campaign I had created for him. From there, on that same day both Yonnie and Big Dave would end up relapsing. I decided to upload this video because I felt like you should see the calm before the storm. Both Yonnie and Big Dave both say they had no intentions of actually relapsing. It just happened to them. Maybe there was something I should have been able pick up on.

    I wanted to upload this video because all of you deserve to see the full story. Everything that happened with all of this. I also want all of you to know that I do not HATE either Yonnie nor Big Dave for what happened. Addiction is something not easily conquered. I have talked to Big Dave since all of this. And tomorrow I will bring you his side of the story. I feel pretty responsible to a degree for all of this. And I know a lot of you have strong opinions in relation to all of this. But what kind of person would I be to just turn my back on either of these two guys. AfterPrisonShow represents a lot of different things. Struggles. Addiction. Overcoming obstacles. Inspiration. Motivation... This channel stands for A LOT. And I just hope everything that has happened serves as a lesson. And maybe in someway helps someone else.

      The way things turned out is sad, but perhaps Dave, Yonnie, you, and us viewers can all learn from the experience and grow from it. Send Dave an Yonnie our best wishes - I'm sure most of the APS viewers, even if disappointed, understand that the road to recovery is not easy.

      Kevin The best course of action would've spoon feeding him the money over time. Make it clear that the help would stop the moment he screws up.
      It's seems weird to do it with a grown man, but it's the best course of action in a situation like this.

      There are very very few people as upfront as Joe. Most people would have probably covered this up. Joe always admits when he's wrong and that takes a lot of courage. I hear a lot of guys on here talk about how greatful they are for opportunities and I have to change and bla bla bla. Joe's the only one I've seen walk the walk. It doesn't take much to see that he's a shyster. If you can't see that, then you, my friend, are quite naive. The flip side is, it is very possible that Joe is doing this on purpose, knowing that this money would cause them to relapse, which makes for GREAT UA-cam views. Joe may be the mastermind this whole time.

    I hate to be negative, but I have a strong suspicion Yonnie relapsed well before this video. I base this on the fact that I'm a heroin addict and have been dealing with them for ten years now, and am very familiar with the addict mentality. He seems to be a fairly intelligent guy...well spoken, articulate. But that coupled with addiction comes the ability to manipulate. I don't know the guy personally and I could very well be wrong, and I do believe he should be forgiven...all I'm saying is, watch yourself, Joe. Be cautious.

      Ethyn Scharnowske I’m sorry for your loss. It’s terrible to lose a parent, and dealing with their issues before hand isn’t easy either. My Condolences.
      Unfortunately, even if your experience wasn’t like this, many addicts do lie and all of them hurt the people around them to get what they want, so the comments about it don’t come from thin air. It doesn’t make it any easier for anybody, family or addict, but I wouldn’t be so quick to judge the family members who have been robbed and lied to either.
      The big guy in the video took the money donated, disappeared to get high, and not long after (when the money runs out) he trashed his own mothers place and took everything she owned. All within less than a month of getting out. Really sucks.

      your only fault in this is getting to exited with actually trying to help someone...
      dont know more than this video, but you were clearly much more exited about helping him then he was about the help..
      it seemed the whole time like he was trying to tell you what you wanted to hear.
      if people really dont want to change themselves and take the initiative, then it rarely works.. and he didnt last long.
      my advice would be skeptical of his apology... if he isnt really sincere about righting this wrong, than you cant help him.
      nobody would have blamed you for not refunding, but the fact that you did.. says alot about you! much respect!
      Edit: kinda weird how someone with this kind of sense of responsebility and honor end up serving so much time in prison.

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 6 років тому +1

      I'd never noticed before, Greg, but now that you mention it, I have seen that more than once in ex-convicts, a strange sort of responsibility, honor, and loyalty I don't get from other people.
      I suppose it's possible that some convicts just learn how to project that in their time an prison or life as a criminal as a survival mechanism or as a sort of camouflage to hide who they really are from other people, but I like to think that at least sometimes in ex-convicts, it's coming from a real place of wanting to turn over a new leaf and start doing the right thing now that they've finally survived their ordeal in prison and have a new chance - maybe their last chance - to clean up and stay free, that they have really done a lot more growing up in prison than most ordinary people do free.
      It's at least fair to say that, for all the faults that got hm sent to prison, Joe seems to be at least trying to be a straight shooter, and to me the optimism and willingness to help seem to be coming from a real, genuine place. That's certainly not to be taken as plot armor against Joe making a mistake or even choosing to deliberately do something wrong - we're all human, and ex-convicts are just humans with records of their faults and humanity - but at the least, I think Joe really is trying harder to do right than a lot of other guys in his position might, and that effort is an inspiration.

      I struggled with addiction to food and alcohol for all of my 20s. I reached out for help with a $5k out of pocket on a surgery, and got about $1k in help too. I made it my responsibility to my donors to succeed, and I went from 410lbs to under 250.
      It’s hard. Addiction. I can’t blame him, but I am disappointed.

    Joe is surrounded by hi-risk individuals.
    Chances are better than not, that these guys will NOT be ok.
    What makes Joe special, is the fact that he is the 1% that can truly turn things around, mentally, physically and spiritually after prison.
    What's is unfortunate as well is that APS is truly handicapped having these guys in such prominent roles.
    I would love to see Joe reach his ceiling, achieve his dreams, wishing Joe all the success in the world, however, that said, he probably will never reach the ceiling unless he surrounds himself with successful people.
    APS is about helping, this doesn't help APS at all in the long run.

      Pat Curran true, same thing on the opposite side of the social ladder. I hope he never goes to Hollywood or accepts a contract to tell his story from them, too many backstabbers, addicts, perverts and scumbags feeding on the newcomers and the weak. He is better off to keep his things at local level. The only outsider he needs to hire is a good CPA to keep his books straight and Uncle Sam happy with his share of APS' taxes.

    Wow man as a recovering addict you can totally see the bullshit seeping out of Big Dave's mouth, also Yonni's. A big red flag in addicts is acting overly enthusiastic or "positive" for lack of a better word when describing their plans. This is because in our addict minds we really are feeling positive, because we know as soon as we can get rid of everyone and take off we will be going straight to the dope man.
    It's sad, sick, and pathetic to the normal person. But to the addict it is like winning the lottery, coming into that much money. I also call bullshit on Yonni not meeting up with Big Dave during their relapse. Think of the likelihood that they both just "happened" to slip, bullshit.

Joe you really have to watch what types of situations you put Yani in so he doesn’t relapse again. Grew up in a family of addicts and you can really only do so much until their actions just start destroying you physically and emotionally. As my dad put his addiction, you come to a point when you've just had enough or you just keep going until you die. If a person relapses they obviously haven't had enough yet. Can't help those who either don't want it or aren't ready to actually get it.

      I’m sorry but this makes me angry. Joes is coming from a different place than why these people commenting that “he put them in a vulnerable situation”... blah blah blah. JOE clearly has just gotten over the “hump” and they have not yet. He obviously understands the life of an addict and obviously understands how difficult it can be without someone giving u a break whether it be money, job or whatever... he is coming from a place to help and offer a refuge to both Dave and Yoni. They took advantage of him - period. Call it what it is. That’s it. They need to take responsibility’s some accountability for THEIR actions and Yoni should have recognized his triggers and should remover himself from the situation if it happens to be a trigger. Period. And if he couldn’t do that then he shouldn’t have been working for Joe. Let’s not forget that- he is working for him he is not a partner in this amazing community JOE has built. Not Yoni.
      my biggest concern is that people like this - people that are still in the life- BY CHOICE- are found to taint what JOE has built or worse pull it down and ruin it cuz JOE has put in work and he deserves this success. I would hate to see them taking advantage of him negatively affect him. Keep your head up JOE. I hate to say it but you are obviously in a different place. Protect yourself protect what you have built and remove the poison from ur life. ✌🏽❤️

    Joe, I've been a member of #TheAPSArmy for a long time now and all I have ever seen you do is good. You pulled yourself out of the shit and got squared away and then you started helping others. You tell us awesome stories, you give us very good reason to stay out of trouble and not go to prison. You encourage alot of your younger viewers to do better than they think they can. I've seen you go through some rough times of your own and we could actually be there for you. As long as I've been here, I have never seen the look of disappointment on your face as bad as it was yesterday. Brother, I'm sorry, from the bottom of my heart, I am sorry. The reason I am writing this today, I felt compelled to say, loose your bad thoughts. I know you feel some responsibility in this situation. F.U.B.A.R. is what I'd call it. But please, don't let it sway you from your mission. You know as well as most of us do, Shit Happens. But don't let it stop you from moving forward. You alone created #TheAPSArmy, you keep it alive, you have made it what it is. I, for one, am damn proud to be a part of this. I admire you and look up to you. (If you knew me, you'd know I don't do that too often) You'd have to be an exceptional individual for me to look up to and respect a person that way I look at you. The amount of grace you showed yesterday with Yonnie and now with Big Dave is incredible. Most people would have told them both to fuck off and been done with it. What I'm trying to say Joe, is you gotta keep on keeping on. Don't let this slow you down#TheAPSArmy is just about over this and you should be too. You are a good man Joe, the best. You don't know me and I don't know you, but regardless brother, I got your back. I am positive that every sub here feels the same way. We all owe something to you because you've helped so many of us.Please don't stop this wonderful thing you've created. Not sure where you are located but you can walk into most ER’s and let them know you need to medically detox. They will help you. And then follow up the detox with intensive outpatient therapy.

      I have a food addiction.. I think drug addiction is even worse.. It's not always a decision made willingly. Imagine resisting something even to the point where you start dreaming about it, can taste it, smell it, until you feel like complete shit and it feels like your blood is burning.. Then you finally indulge and feel 1000% better, followed by feeling like a piece of shit failure.
      And I'm just talking about the junk food addiction here. The roughest part is when the body rebels violently when you're NOT putting junk (food, drug or anything else addictive) into it.

    • @Bubba_Grimm
      @Bubba_Grimm 6 років тому +1

      Draydin Bardon I'm sorry you've been around drugs all your life, maybe that's why you were able to say no? Some people aren't exposed to that stuff until they are having a shit time in their life and they run right into a situation where they don't wanna kill themselves but they can't deal with reality anymore so they inevitably sniff out the hard shit and before you know it, the person calling addicts idiots are blue and unresponsive. I have yet to meet a single person who isn't addicted to SOMETHING. Work. Working out. Movies. Gaming. Food. Sports. So if you're truly not an addict then I don't think you're being honest or you're not human. Just a question, what drives you sir? What are you "passionate" about in life? I don't think you'll be honest but I'm curious if you bother to respond.

      The only track they're staying on is the track marks on their arms. You can clearly see one on Yonnie's arm when he has his hand on the steering wheel in the car and is on the phone to pig Dave. Go to 4:15 and pause and you can clearly see.

    I still think you made the right move Joe. I'm a firm believer that when a person gives a cash donation to an individual they essentially surrender any say in how that money is used. I didn't always feel this way but I think that we owe people enough dignity to not dictate their every move when we decide to offer assistance.It seems that money is the only thing we do this with. We wouldn't give a homeless man a meal but tell him he cannot eat it until the next day. we wouldn't give someone clothing but tell them where to wear it. Helping someone should be strings free. it's an act of kindness not a contract.

      As for Big Dave and Yonnie, it takes balls to accept consequences for one's actions I wish them both all the luck in the world in dealing with the fallout from their decisions. God knows I've had to salvage burnt bridges because of my addiction and I hope their families will be merciful.

Ive never been to prison let slone jail, but found your videos while broke looking for ways to spice up ramen noodles. The point is its not just about prison, it means a lot more. Joe @3:57 look at Yanni's left arm. There are little bruises that only come from one thing and that is a needle. He already relapsed when you filmed this. I'm 100% sure of this because I used to be an i.v. drug user. Hate to say it but he played you.

    • @CGoody564
      @CGoody564 6 років тому +13

      I don't know about that. I don't see scar tissue anywhere, and bruising from IV tends to be extremely small unless you are repeatedly using the same needle, in which case there would be much more noticable entry points. I agree the relapse already happened; I'm simply saying the apparent bruises on his arm don't seem to be an indication of that necessarily.
      I'm more so looking at the pinned pupils on an overcast day in a car.
      That one dark mark on the bend of his elbow is a little fishy, but that doesn't look like bruising. It looks like a birth mark of some sort, unless dude shot up and forgot to wipe the blood away.

      i can see the dark scar but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fresh. i’m an addict as well & i do have dark track mark scars where i haven’t used in likely over a year. could have been old by then. but i’ve also been in the situation where i was lying about being clean and most definitely wasn’t. i’m just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt...i’ve been called a liar for old scars many many times.

    I'm have no hatred for Dave, but he is now accountable for the money good hearted people gave to a stranger. I feel that he took advantage of these people, it may not have been intentional, but it happened.
    My heart goes out to Dave for his addiction problem, I can understand where he is. I've been there and have been clean for over 10 years. Coming from this, I think Dave needs to take responsibility for his actions and needs to try to make this right.
    This is not be taken in a negative context. One of the biggest steps in recovery is to be accountable and responsible for your actions. Dave can't just say "Oops, I fucked up, sorry.", as members of the APS Army, we are here to hold Dave to his actions as friends should do.

      Caella Gregory I know that Joe refunded the money, it's the principal. Hundreds of strangers just gave Big Dave money to help him, he needs to be held accountable for their kindness and generosity. If I had donated, I wouldn't have cared if I got the money back. Dave should have either done the right thing, or manned up and straight out admitted he messed up. No, Joe had to chase him down, take money out of his own pocket and apologize. Big Dave should have done that.

    Man, i hate to say it, and I swear I'm not just trying to troll or be negative. I'm the first person to give someone the benefit of the doubt. And i am a man who has done a small amount of time, and also have and do battle addiction on the daily bases, and hsve for almost 15 years. Though I've been clean for a couple years now. It is still a daily fight. That said, I am 16:25 into this video, and I can say without a doubt, that my man big Dave here already knows that he is going to spend at least just a little bit of this money on whatever his drug of choice is. I would bet a week's pay on it. And I swear I'm not trying to be a contrarian or root for this man to relapse or any such thing. Just being an addict myself, it just seems to me like he already has the dopeman on standby. And I hope I am wrong, but it's my honest assessment of his overall demeanor and his super vague and repetitive generally not answering questions directly and specifically... 😔

    • @buddyprowell
      @buddyprowell 6 років тому +6

      Also, I'd like to add, that I in no way mean to assume or suggest that my man intends on blowing the entire 1100 on dope. Just that he does plan on just getting a little taste, just to get rid of that craving, that constant little itch, that every single drug addict/alcoholic knows. Now, where that little taste leads is a whole other thing. I'm pulling for him to be able to ignore it. It's soo hard to explain to people who have never had to battle this, how extremely extremely difficult it is to resist. I hope he has a strong support group of some sort around him.

      Obi-Rick Kenobi Man, I just started watching the "relapse" video. Like I'm just a couple of minutes into it, and it's like I could have written the script for it. I've seen and/or been in this exact situation 974 times before. I hated for everyone involved. And I especially hate it for Joe and Yonnie. I kinda feel bad for Dave, but at the same time, I kinda feel like he knew exactly what he was going to do the second Joe was out of sight. I hate to say it, but this is why it's so hard to help people. Especially addicts. Bc anyone who has ever had a serious problem with serious drugs, knows damn good and well, that you have fucked over people at one point or another. Friends, family, Mom, Dad, Grandparents, hell even their own kids. And I'm not judging, I've fucked over people when I needed to get high that bad too. Sometimes you (we) just can't see that you're fucking over the only people on this planet who care enough to reach out a hand to try n pick you up. Sometimes you can't see what you're doing to those people until it's too late. If ever. And now Joe is liable to never try to help anybody ever again, bc he, and the awesome people who donated, git burned so badly. It's a ruthless, viscous cycle.
