Aw, man! The first MC on the mic is named Ishmael Butler aka Butterfly. After Digable, he relocated to Seattle, and formed Hip Hop duo, Shabazz Palaces. Shabazz Palaces are the first Hip Hop/Rap group signed to iconic Seattle Alternative Rock and Punk label, Sub Pop!
Shabazz Palaces are currently active. They're *very* experimental. Headphone music for sure. Love 'em!

Butlers production with Shabazz Palaces is next level. The beats are like nothing I've ever heard, experimental beats from another planet. I think it isolates some listeners but I dig. 100% headphones are a must.

The Native Tongues rap movement is definitely worth yo' time: the DPs (don't sleep on the 2nd album), Tribe, the JBs, De La, and more. Imagine the whiplash from NWA and PE releasing their debut albums around '87 and '88, and then here comes debuts by De La Soul, Tribe, and the DPs from '89 to 93. Crazy...what a time to be alive.

Might want to check out Tennessee by Arrested Development...came out about the same time. Couldn't go anywhere in 1992 without hearing Digable Planets or Arrested Development. If you want to go real chill, check out P.M. Dawn - Set Adrift on Memory Bliss from 1991 or DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Summertime.

This song was everywhere in the early mid 90's. The entire album is soaked with jazz rhymes/beats and cadence. "Where I'm From" and "Nickle Bag" gained traction as well. Their second Joint " Blowout Comb" veered towards a Pro-Black vibe that scared-off commercial heads. Totally underrated group that hit the "Jazz" pocket of the 90's hiphop scene.

I remember this sing and group very well. I was in my early 20s back then. Their style was unique and brought in other rappers with a similar style. The blend of the jazz from the 50s and 60s, with the atmosphere of 'Beatniks' sitting in the club, listening to them rap was brilliant. Look up the Beatnik era.50s and early 60s era that came out of the Bay area California. Even the lingo was catchy.

That whole album is amazing, and it works best as an album. People don't do this anymore, but set aside an hour some Saturday evening, chill in the living room with the refreshments of your choice and a couple of people of your choice. Just listen to Reachin' from beginning to end, THEN go out and do hat you do. Some of the best nights of my life started out that way, and this album reminds me of that.
