  • in 1967, brenda holland left her home in the mountains for a summer on the coast, working on the prestigious outdoor drama the lost colony, which tells the story of the roanoke colony and the mass disappearance of some of its colonists. when she was tragically murdered, police tried to pin the crime on an obvious suspect, but decades later, the public would learn that a total stranger to brenda had confessed to her murder, and circumstances seemed to point to his involvement in the crime. is brenda's case truly unsolved, or did her killer escape justice through death? has the other mystery of roanoke island been solved?

that sheriff was incompetent and the dentist likely murdered Brenda. poor Dan, hounded by law enforcement.

I agree that Danny's guilt came from the place of a gentleman not seeing the lady safely home. However the sheriff was friends with the dentist so there was no way he'd investigate him.
He was a dirty cop more than he was incompetent.

How tragic. Maybe Danny's original lie was due to wanting to protect his and Brenda's reputations. A lie of the times they were living in. I don't think Danny killed her. 💔

Such a sad story! I also feel sympathy for the man who was suspected of this crime for years when it sounds like he most probably was innocent. It seems as if, although the evidence against the dentist was circumstantial, that there would be enough to declare the dentist guilty. It’s so maddening to hear about influential people getting special treatment!

Cases like this breaks my heart: an innocent victim gets killed and deprived from life just when her life was starting, and just when she was becoming successful in career. Her parents pass away devastated, not knowing anything about the case and killer of their daughter. The rest of family survives her in decades living in a limbo and dark. Police being careless and not serious about all those piles of evidence about the killer. I feel the victim was like my long lost friend, and the police had collaborated in her death!

I know that there are good reasons for jumping around chronologically - in this case introducing the dentist and his death into the narrative - but by the time we got to the point where it is shown the hows & whys that it could be him, I couldn't remember when he had taken his own life anymore. It might be good to use a few seconds after building his story to remind us "this was xxxx(year), x number of years/months before his suicide" (just as an example).

This is truly tragic. Brenda deserved so much more than what LEO failed to do! For them to uphold “good ‘ole white boys” mentality when a young woman is murdered is unforgivable and unacceptable, still prevalent today. Danny Bender spent his life under scrutiny and suspicion when it was Dr. Edwards the entire time. LEO’s FAILED Brenda, with Dotties compelling testimony, they still protected a killer. I hope that Brenda’s family continue to fight for their sisters truth and ultimately justice.

Regardless of the proof culpability of the dentist, he sounds like a classic toxic brute and an abuser of the highest degree. People like him are a large part of what makes life unbearable for many people. I went to college in North Carolina and found this story to be very interesting from both an historical point of view and as a standalone tale of corruption in the legal systems and law enforcement bureaus of decades ago.

What a horrible story of murder, suspicion, and a deliberate miscarriage of justice! One young woman was brutally murdered and her family was forced to spend the rest of their lives wondering who would have hurt their precious child. Then there’s Danny…a good, decent man (yes…a gentleman) was forced to spend the rest of his life under a veil of suspicion of the murder of a beautiful young woman. Then there’s Dr. Edwards…a dentist whose violent temper was well known in the town, who ruined the lives his wives and children, and most likely the one responsible for Brenda’s murder. Finally, the worst part of this tragedy…Edwards managed to escape any investigation or prosecution thanks to his personal relationship with the local sheriff! The death of anyone young goes against nature, and the murder of someone young is utterly despicable. But when those responsible for the murder are discounted by law enforcement due to their personal relationships with the suspected murderer, the murder victim and family are forced to endure another incomprehensible heartache! Law enforcement involved made it perfectly clear that solving their daughter’s murder came after protecting the reputation of their friend!

Especially when they are as sweet and polite as Brenda was.
I have similar worries for my niece Kenzie (18 as of June 4th) and my son Tyler (16 as of July 8th).
Kenzie is smart and outgoing so I already know she's going to be going to college. Tyler is nearing college age, though admittedly as a guy he doesn't face the same level of dangers Kenzie faces. But a father can't help but worry his kids will be safe.

It's weird to think about the times changing. My aunt is about the same age as Brenda and went to college without any fuss from my grandmother. However, my grandparents had gone to college (rare at the time probably) and that probably gave them a different viewpoint. For years now though, it's practically expected for kids to go to college or immediately move out on their own. I'm proud of Brenda though, Buies Creek is a long way from where she grew up and Manteo is almost *fully* across the whole state from Canton.

It's the age old problem with LE, once they make a decision about a case, they don't want to change direction regardless of what pops up as evidence. The case of Jennifer Keese in Orlando is typical of this. LE still maintain she was abducted outside her condo and taken away in her car; a complete falsehood, yet even today they'll tell us the same thing. It derailed the case completely.

Ty for stating it is unsolved in the tag. I really don't like the unsolved and to only find out this is the case 30 minutes later can be a bummer

Shameful. The doctor was the killer and protected. by law enforcement. Danny did not do this killing and should take legal action to have his name completed cleared.

I wonder if whoever assaulted her previously finished the job? Considering her reported comments about the incident, and how it had affected her, she may have been distressed about her inability to respond to Dan. Perhaps she had determined to go and confront her assailant (he may have lived nearby). Or perhaps he had been following her, jealous of her going out with Dan and he accosted her when she left alone. I wonder (though I seriously doubt) if this was ever considered or investigated. It would rule out the dentist and the mistaken identity theory though. Sadly I guess we will never know and justice for Brenda will probably never happen now.

I can’t believe the sheriff still showed interest in the case after retiring and then STILL went back to the Danny theory after hearing Dotty’s story. Also there was a lot of evidence supporting his innocence and even a better theory being proposed. Borderline villainous.

I've never heard of a murder case in which a cop in a position of power EVER investigates their friends. This is why cops, lawyers, judges and members of juries are recused in cases like this.
100% fact that the sheriff covered up the crime for his friend.
