I had one of these and it was pretty bad. I took off the sanding disc and added a vbelt pulley and then attached a 2 hp 1750 rpm motor that I had lying around and added a glass platten and a thumb wheel for the tracking adjustment. Then I went online and bought some decent belts for it. That turned it into a bit of a monster.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I had never made a knife before a month ago or so. What I wanted to make was something I could use for throwing. I made about 20 pointy pieces of bar steel that I could throw at the target. I rather liked doing it so I thought I would buy a little belt sander and try to make something I could give as Christmas presents. Being as, I am retired, cheap is good. Thanks for the video...

Thanks for showing how to make something work. I am not selling knives and I can’t see spending 1,000 dollars on a grinder. Shipping alone is 300 dollars for 99% of the companies to ship to me. 2x72 grinders are nice and work great but you can make good knives with other grinders. You just have to make it work for you.
Well, it took the plunge, and hit proceed with purchase and bought the Norse. I'll be making mods as soon as I can, and belts will come from trugrit as combats abrasives are a tad bit more expensive. Thank you for all of your tutorials and reviews, they've been very helpful

Very helpful! This review convinced me to give this grinder a try, and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Does your motor get pretty warm on this model? I noticed mine gets very warm / borderline hot in pretty short order at idle. Just wondering if that's been your experience, or if it's something I need to be concerned about.
It did get warm/hot for me. I could generally still touch it without being burned though. I always ground with a fan on me pushing out of the garage. That may have helped.
@@RedBeardOps Awesome, thank you! I went with the Dayton model as well. It gets hot enough to be pretty uncomfortable to the touch, but not "burn the skin off you" hot. Figured that might be the case with this little motor, but just wanted to be sure. Thanks also for the quick reply!
@@TheLeatherSniffer 10-4, I'm not an expert on little electric motors, but I know the electric motor on my drill press will get pretty warm/hot too. My bet is that it's normal. These grinders are so cheap... I'd ride it till it dies!

@@RedBeardOps Yeah, well, I'm still having a lot of problems with getting a clean grind line. I just need a lot more practice. So far, the new grinder is a lot easier to work to l with.

Thanks for the review! What belt grits would you recommend for a beginner knifemaker? Ceramic 36, 60/80? Etc.? I'm looking for a simple sating finish as the end result, nothing mirrored.

This is a great video - thank you! A question I have - I'm wondering if you could swap the wheels without too much effort to effectively slow down the speed of the belt. I don't have my grinder yet (just ordered it) but thought that might help in some of my overheating issues on my 4x36. Thanks James!
Thanks for the praise. I'd say swapping the wheels would be highly difficult since the top wheel is attached to the tracking mechanism. You'd at the least need to cut off all the guards towards the top. I've seen some people slow the grinder down by taking the 6'' disk off and attaching a step pulley. Then using an additional motor mounted on the table with it's own set of step pulleys to adjust the speed. In that scenario you'd be bypassing the motor on the grinder. Your best bet is probably to exercise your patience while using it along with utilizing light pressure and fresh belts. The ceramic belts and gator belts grind at lower temps. Keep a bucket of water handy!
I forced a 40 grit belt on the belt grinderand spun the top wheel to start until it wore it down enough to clear the guard, took about 30 seconds. ;)

Great review. Have you tried to slow it down? Jeremy Fielding's channel has some very good information on how to identify and safely vary the speed of the different types of electric motors. That may improve the utility greatly. Thanks. 👍

Hi, thanks for the video. I am in the process of buying a 2 x 42 and was considering one with the 3/4 ho motor. Have you ever compare the two? I am tired of my 1x30 bogging down and that has a 1/3 hp.
No sir, this model is the only one I've used. It had plenty of power for what I was using it for.

Sorry Henryk, I've sold this grinder to a friend. The work rest was just a piece of angle iron and steel plate.
How powerful is the motor on this thing? I have a Sears 2x42 but the belt makes more of an A shape than this one and it also has a platen free area that makes it possible to do corners. I would use this for heavy stuff like grinding 1/4" and thicker lawn mower blades and also for welding projects. One like my old Sears unit is over $500 now and I know I did not pay anything near that new. I think the knife craze has doubled the price on these things. The old Sears unit has enough power but I need one for my farm and want to leave the Sears one at home since I need if for a business I run.
Hey Perry, the knife craze has definitely jacked up grinder prices! I think this unit would do just fine to sharpen mower blades. The motor on it is 1/3 HP. With my experience I didn't have any issues with it bogging down. I would advise getting some ceramic 36 or 60 grit belts from TruGrit.com, which will make quick work of your large mower blades. The cutting ability of the ceramics are an extreme advantage. 👍
@@RedBeardOps I have been getting belts from mcmaster.com. I get the 36 grit and finer zirconia belts. These belts also don't come apart like the brown ones. Can you use the uncovered top idler wheel for hollow grinding? Or if not do you think a bench grinder with stone wheels would do the job? Even if only in a rough sense where hand tools would be needed to clean it up
Hey man. For getting good hollow grinds I think you'd want a rubber contact wheel. I haven't done any hollow grinding myself except for fulling, but even when doing that a rubber contact wheel is wayyyy better. So yeah, I wouldn't advise it with this set up.

@@RedBeardOps bear with me on all the questions, if you were able to make the plattern removeable do you think a convex plattern would do the job? i am straight up trying to work around crappy selection at a budget in the uk(though your video did change my plans from a 1x 30 to a dayton model that you use for £159 all be it at about 70 more expensive, i am unsure to be honest whether either idea would be feasible or even safe on a high speed moving part tool so im trying to steal your experience, shamelessly.
michael h lol I get it man! Sometimes you need to stretch funds. I think a convex platen could work, and probably would work better than trying to add a contact wheel. With enough modification I’m sure it’s possible to add a contact wheel (you’re talking about the drive wheel attached to the motor right? Not the tracking wheel.). It wouldn’t be easy... but I bet it’s doable. It would have to be larger since there isn’t much space down there to actually move the knife side to side and grind. You may run into issues with the belts not being long enough. With the level of modifications you’re talking about... you minus well build your own grinder (like the Coote 2x72).
Do you think it is better to get a cheap 1x30 to get in the door first, and just save for a 2x72, or go to this guy first? I'm trying to build a budget knife shop from scratch and looking to save where I can.✌️
Thats not a bad option. Many do that for sure.
Came here from your insta. Do you find that you can stop the motor when trying to rough grind?Because to get the most of the ceramic belts you have to put a lot of pressure.

It is defiantly possible to stall this motor. You do have to be leaning in very hard to cause this to happen. I wouldn't consider this a large negative for this grinder since it can hog off material very well with a ceramic on it. Something to be aware of though. Also when you're setting up your platen, it's possible to have the platen too proud of the wheels causing a greater than designed belt tension... this can also make the motor work harder than needed and cause stalls.

Is this worth the money for a upgrade from a wen 1x30? Should I save up for a 2x72? Knife pricing wise, I’m not sure I want to increase them because of abrasive costs
Man, those are tough questions. I feel like the 2x42 is far superior than the 1x30. There are some great makers out there that use this grinder. You just need to know that the learning curve will likely be larger than if you went straight to a VFD controlled 2x72. This thing is fast. That being said, if you learn to grind with this guy, you'll be a better grinder when you do upgrade to the 2x72. Now days there are some really good 2x72 options the the market at reasonable prices so you could use your 2x42 to produce some knives, safe your money, and purchase the 2x72 with the proceeds. Then sell your 2x42 locally on craigs list to recoup some of the money.
When you do upgrade to the 2x72... I highly recommend spending the money on a VFD... it's a game changer.
That’s a great idea. I forge most of my knives right now and the bevels. I am just looking for a grinder that would be able to get all the hammer marks out without using up lots of belts and taking a while. Thanks, and Happy forging
Hey, I was about to buy the 4 x 36, but they are out of stock. That one has 2/4 HP, This one is only 1/3 HP, and 2 x 42 BUCKTOOL. Is it enough for working in metal (not professionally just enthusiast )

Hello sir, I found this 2x42 to be pretty adequate for general metal working. You can get some nice belts from Tru-Grit as well that makes it even better.
Do you need to remove the bottom contact wheel when cutting the guard off?

On my palmgren, the belt walks on the stock platten. I can't find any info on whether or not it's an issue with the belt tensioner, it just seems too weak to hold the belt tight. Will adding a thicker platten solve this issue? I can't find anyone with that specific issue, and wondering if I have a faulty tensioner.

I’ve got a real question. I’m looking at this grinder as well as the Bucktool 4x36 5amp 3/4hp with 6inch disc. Is there a benefit of the extra 1/4 hp of the 4x36 or does it just get spent due to the wider belt? I like this one because it looks more like a 2x72 that I use at the shop because it’s longer, but that extra power on the 4x36 is intriguing. What do you think
Are you going to be using it for knifemaking? If so go with the 2'' wide belts for sure.

I’m so glad I came back and watched this again. After a week of using my Bucktool 2x42 I realized that my conditioning belts wouldn’t fit because of the safety guards. Then I realized that, “ Hey 2x72’s rarely have anything covering the belt,” then I came back and sure enough you removed yours with success. I will be doing this so I can use my 36 grit belts and my conditioning belts.

The platen can be removed and you can split belts. I'm not sure if it would work on guitar bodies though, never tried.

So, I forge my knives and have a bench grinder for mass material removal, except it makes the most ugly marks.
For strictly bevels, Grinding knives flat, and handles, would this be recommended? I don't really have the space for a huge 2 x 72.

2x42 belts should be appropriately tensioned with the built in tensioner on this machine. I don't think you can adjust it.
Where did you get the trizact Gator belt for the 2x42 I cant find them anywhere

Hey Austin, this isn't my line of work. I'd advise you finding a friend in the area with a welding machine since the table is of pretty simple construction.
