2 or 3hp treadmill motors cant be stopped. Free on craigslist, I have 10. Variable speed control Direct drive. I can tell you everything you need to know
At 100% efficiency the motor comes out to 73% of a horse power.... technically not lying... but I would assume about 85ish % efficiency on the motor and that would be about 2/3rds a hp. So whatever right?
Tru-grit abrasives has bump free higher grit belts in 4x36 in case you wanted to know. I'm sure I read somewhere their silicon carbide belts are bump free, they're wet/dry too.
I'm actually in the process of getting rid of my harbor freight 4x36 and didnt think I would replace it. Now I'm convinced it needs replacing lol nice vid
I totally agree with your assessment of belt sanders. No company out there makes a heavy-duty model that is comprised of metal parts instead of plastic. As you said, build it and they will buy it. No takers to this point. It's sad that no companies are investing in quality components for these power tools. Bushings vs. bearings. Plastic vs. metal. Even the overall quality lacks drastically. A lot of reviews of epic failures of these power tools because there isn't enough effort put into the construction. It's all about the bottom line and how much of a profit margin these companies can make on the overhead. Furthermore, built off-shore with no quality control oversight. Most are disposable and cannot be repaired if they fail. This is where we have come to at this point in time. Thanks for the demo. Cheers!
I have a 20 year old Craftsman that is still going strong, no drive belt, but with a 6” disc. It’s not as fast as yours though, but never had it stop on me. Best upgrade hands down, was a stainless steel belt lifter, and a leather belt from handamerica as I recall. This gives you a giant slack belt grinder, which is perfect for razor sharp convex edges on axes and other big blades. Then final polish with the raised slack leather belt to a super sharp edge. I use green chromium oxide compound on the leather.
Alex, only recently found your channel. Also an outdoors guy, but do a ton of sharpening - huge thanks to you for taking the time to post these up!! Tons of helpful information. Great work, hope you find time to keep it up.
When my belt/disc sander took a dump after 25 years of hard labor a few years back I bought a used variable speed workshop bench grinder that I found while trucking along the world's largest yard sale and I ended up building my own belt/disc sander/grinder and I am very please with it and with only a few modification plus materials total cost less than 60 bucks.
I already had their 6" disc version in my cart, after watching this I saw that this 8" disc one also has an extra $20 off so bought this ( using your link :) ) instead
I've had two of the cheap ones and use the survivor for flattening handle scales. That Buck looks like it was built around a traditional 2 wheel bench grinder. Maybe get a variable speed 2 wheel bench model with a powerful motor and transplant the rigging on the Buck to it.
Thank you for sharing your experience with this. I am looking for a belt sander primarily for metal working. I too like the design and think that it would be a good choice.
I know this is an older video but you did get your wish on the upgraded pro version with 1 hp motor. Lol. Amazon just under $300. Glad I found this video great machine.
Another option is the Porter Cable PCB420SA. It looks very similar, is direct drive, and is also 5 Amps. I've had one for several years and love it. It has plenty of power. I bought the cheapo Harbor Freight 4x36 Belt/Disc sander first, but quickly returned it. It was a powerless piece of junk. Lowes has the Porter Cable for $259.
Speaking of being made by the same company, I have a porter cable that looks mysteriously the same. I also have a granite plate and a Damascus knife, but it has rosewood or ironwood grips. It holds an edge a long time.
Looking out up, they sell a "professional" model for metal. Looks basically the same but 7 amp motor and cast iron work table for belt side. Might be more appealing to some
Thank you for the very informative video you created. I have a question regarding the fireplace ceramic glass. How thick of a ceramic glass did you use?
Have you considered buying 1hp-1.5hp bench grinder and converting it to what you need..? Maybe a dual 4x36 or maybe a 2x42 on one side and 4x36 on the other..? Your certainly talented enough to pull it off.
Great video. I bought the rikon because of this. The rikon 50-114 is the same model as the Bucktool but rikon has a 5 year warranty. Bucktool doesn't list any warranty. The belt work table is ehhh. I needed the full 12 inch run so had to lose the table and dust collector. The stock Platon is ok for wood. Maybe the rikon is better in this respect but I'm not doing knives. It comes with 80 grit belt and disc. The belt runs so fast it leaves a very smooth surface but takes out a lot of material. I switched to a 120 belt. Wood comes out like glass.
Don’t know if peanut butter would work to cut the adhesive on that disk but it works very well on so many other types of adhesives. Certainly, because peanut oil is it’s own kind of messy so you have to use dish soap and hot water to cut through the peanut butter. More than one application may be necessary.
I had a Delta Shopmaster 4x36 that lasted for 20 years with near daily use......it died and i bought a Wen because it was highly rated.....it lasted a little over a year. Now I'm using a Rockwell (1 month) that's basically the same as the Wen with Rockwell colors. If it doesn't last, I'll give the Bucktool a try. Too bad Delta no longer does a 4x36.
The old one in the video was a delta. I believe the buck tool is just a rebranded porter cable. There's several brands who make them and they look the same with the same specs. Just trying to filter out what ones are the same vs what ones are different is a job in itself.
Thanks for the review. I’m in the market for my first sander as a new woodworker and I’ve seen all those big box models and they all look like the same model. I do like the direct drive on this and see why it is better. I don’t know how much I’ll use one these sanders so I don’t want to over-buy for my needs but I also don’t want to buy a junkie product. I’d rather spend a bit more to get something quality.
On the TV show Forged in Fire, I always see them sharpening their knives (swords, spears, etc.) with sanding belts. Can you explain the difference between what I see them doing and using sharpening stones?
Good review, I just picked up one of these sanders myself and I'm excited to get using it. You mention wanting an industrial version of this, I'm not sure if you've already found it since you made this video but Jet makes a 4x36 belt/disc sander with a 1hp variable speed motor, the IBDG-436VS. I haven't looked too closely at it myself since it also comes with an industrial price tag of around $1100.
I was looking to get an all-round sander and picked this one up. It's really got the power for its price, but I wish there was some adjustability to the belt, so u could put a curvature on it to get clearance for knife sharpening. It's just got too much bulk around the belt to really get a 14-17 angle on my knives without running into the bolster/handle.
Great video. Just bought a BUCKTOOL Professional Bench Belt Sander 1HP Direct Drive Motor 4x36 inch Belt and 8 inch Disc for Metal Sanding, BD4802, based in part on your video. This model has some of the design changes you suggested in your video, such as the belt positioning adjuster refinement.
Alex, you inspired me. I bought this sander, and I got a piece of pyroceram glass and JB welded it as a platen. I also kept the dust collector and simply cut off the right side of the plastic housing so I can change belts without having to remove it (got the idea from another UA-camr). Using the work surface from the wheel side on the belt now, but I think it might not be stable enough. Wondering if I should fabricate a work surface that isn't part of the tool now.
$225 on Amazon. At that price this unit should be considered a medium-class belt/disc sander which is terrific news as I, too, was very disappointed in the ubiquitous light-class units that flooded the market it seems. I am not the type of guy to buy any tool that will likely be replaced at the one-year mark nor should any of you. Thank you for being brutally honest about this product sir. Wish more users showed some balls and answered the tough questions you want to know about a product. Oh, and ACTUALLY USED a product extensively enough to know which features were good versus which were not so good. I was wondering the difference about direct drive versus the belt drive units. Absolutely no comparison. For instance, what do you do when you belt wears out to the point you are constantly bogging down your unit? If you were like 99% of the folks out there, you'd chuck this garbage in the trash. I didn't see one of these low-cost units mention a thing about the belt issue or even how to go about replacing one. Again thank you a million times over for telling things the way they are.
Very interesting video. I've just purchased the Bucktool belt sander. I can't find a glass platen to fit it. Can you give me any help on where to locate a platen of this size. Only one's I've seen are the 2" belt grinders. Thank you for any help you can give.
I have a 1x42x8" disc, plus a 2x48 belt grinder. I've made 12" double sided blades overall 17" long with them. The 1x42 is pretty handy for thumb holes.
In another comment he said, "USA knife maker has them. I believe they are just ceramic stove glass. I cut mine with a wet saw." Someone else commented, "I got a piece of pyroceram glass and JB welded it as a platen. I also kept the dust collector and simply cut off the right side of the plastic housing so I can change belts without having to remove it (got the idea from another UA-camr). Search for pyroceram on eBay. There are people who sell them relatively cheap and will size them for you."
I was so happy to get one. I finally found a great price got the Bauer from Harbor freight… I am so completely disgusted and disappointing that piece of crap. You did exactly what I want. Mine does has no power sand, a piece of wood and stop. It would just light pressure plus the sanding belt is kind of recessed into the track so you can’t really do use the side whatever.
Totally with you! I bought a grizzly. I like it ok The main thing you need to watch out for is, if they have actual bearings and not some bronze bushing crap. But, like you, I wish they made a very professional quality model. The belts are so cheap when you go with 4×36.
That one sounds pretty good. I use a Porter Cable sander that's similar to that Buck .I've run mine for 6 hard years as it's an everyday tool in my shop.
Dude I bought this cause of your video ..Its freaking great 👍Built like a tank I'm so glad I didn't go the full budget route. It's definitely worth spending that extra $60-$80 imho .
Thanks for the video it was very informative for me, I bought it a few days ago and it just arrived. You video was very helpful in both it's functions and necessary upgrades.
Just bought this machine and like it so far! Can you tell me which ceramic platter you are using, and where you got it? Does it make the belt sander a little quieter? Nice video!
In case anyone wants one of these - They are 400$ on Ebay, 250$ on Amazon and 206$ on Walmart, I grabbed the Walmart one tonight with free shipping. It's also the same as a Rikon unit that's out there. The models people do not want to buy - Are the WEN, RYOBI and a handful of others that are all identical, just look at how they are set up and you will clearly see they are all the same aside from the colors and maybe the switch or shape of a knob; Avoid the cheap ones.
Went on the Google machine and saw that Jet makes a 4×36 for around $650.00. It has an 8" stone on the side instead of a disk but you can find those on line as well.
Kalamazoo makes a "real" 4x36 belt sander with a Baldor motor. It's about $650 - $800 depending on what guarding options you want, but it's from an US industrial machine manufacturer.
The problem i had with those is the small platen size. Its only a 7.25" platen. For what i use it for i need a full 10". For some reason they went with larger drive and idler wheels. If they made a 2" drive and idler wheel version with a 10" platen id own one. 👍
Where did you buy the ceramic glass platen? I just bought this sander. Love it overall but have similar complaints. Belt change is slow. Would also like to see cast aluminum table (rather than lightweight extruded aluminum) for the belt similar to the cast aluminum table used with the disc.
Thanks for video! I respectfully disagree that belt drives "rob power". Belt drives use different size pulleys to create proper torque and spindle speeds while utilizing the most efficient electric motor RPM. I think you must be comparing only the cheapest of the cheap belt drive sanders. Belt drive equipment has been the standard for the last 100 years. That said, I am a fan of Buck Tools when it comes to in-expensive shop equipment.
They do rob power. Especially on under powered 1/2hp sanders that are the norm. The gold standard is direct drive. No power loss and lower vibration. Direct drive is common in the grinder industry for these vary reasons. You can't compensate for less power with a gear reduction. When it comes to sanders/grinders more power is always better. Watts are power and power equals work. 👍
Nice presentation, interesting. The comment was made that one of the first thing you did was remove the disc and the factory adhesive; why remove the disc? Was it replaced? With what? Or was it cleaned and reinstalled? Please clarify.
If that one peters out, you might consider Rikon’s new 50-114. I’ve been using the crap out of mine and I couldn’t be more happy. Best disc/belt setup I’ve bought in over twenty years.
The problem with your “ bump” from the belt is your glass is mounted to high compared to the end rollers , if you lowered it the bump might be negligible ! ?
If I used a belt sander professionally then yes, I could justify spending that much on a sander. However, when I only use one maybe twice a year for projects around the house or in the garage, the WEN I have makes much more sense economically.
I have the "pro" 1 hp version and it's better than this one for only $240 and they have a 1.5 hp industrial version for $450 on a stand. Bucktool has raised their game nicely. Their 1 hp bench grinder is excellent also. @ the 13:00 he explains all the things he would like to see upgraded and the new Bucktool answers every one of them.
I've considered getting one of these but 4x36 belts are a pain to find (well ceramic ones anyway, aluminium oxide just wear out too quick). Nice review mate, best wishes from here in the UK.
fyi, there is about 750watts per 1hp 750watts/120 volts = approx 6.25 amps per hp @ 120volts, of course that is at %100 efficiency so real world numbs finger about 7amps per hp.
Good stuff, thanks for posting. Interesting about adding glass to the platten. I'll look for ceramic fireplace glass. Did you consider grinding the square edges off... maybe just the leading edge? Or is that not possible with this sort of glass?
This is what I need to replace my weak Delta 4x36. I'm grateful to have it and it's better than having no sander at all, but it bogs so quickly. I like this one. What RPM is the motor?

The models people do not want to buy - Are the WEN, RYOBI and a handful of others that are all identical, just look at how they are set up and you will clearly see they are all the same aside from the colors and maybe the switch or shape of a knob; Avoid the cheap ones.
@How did you make the shelf for the glass???
Where did you get the ceramic platen?
Went on the Google machine and saw that Jet makes a 4×36 for around $650.00. It has an 8" stone on the side instead of a disk but you can find those on line as well.
I have a porter cable that’s almost identical works great
Kalamazoo makes a "real" 4x36 belt sander with a Baldor motor.
Do you have a source for the glass/ceramic used for the platten? Great review. Be well.
Where did you buy the ceramic glass platen? I just bought this sander. Love it overall but have similar complaints. Belt change is slow. Would also like to see cast aluminum table (rather than lightweight extruded aluminum) for the belt similar to the cast aluminum table used with the disc.
I'm on the fence between this and the Porter-Cable PCB420SA.
For this price is there any other belt grinder you would recommend for just making knives for myself as a beginner?
About the amperage rating, 5*120/750=4/5th HP assuming 100% efficiency, 3/4 HP rating isn’t too unrealistic
@@OUTDOORS55 I hear what you're saying. It's nice to have a respectful disagreement!
Nice presentation, interesting. The comment was made that one of the first thing you did was remove the disc and the factory adhesive; why remove the disc? Was it replaced? With what? Or was it cleaned and reinstalled? Please clarify.
And where would one get the glass/ceramic platten???
Ive just changed my half hp motor of my belt and disc sander to a 1.5hp.
If that one peters out, you might consider Rikon’s new 50-114. I’ve been using the crap out of mine and I couldn’t be more happy. Best disc/belt setup I’ve bought in over twenty years.
Dragonuv2002 by looking at them I’d say that is the same tool with a different name on it.
The problem with your “ bump” from the belt is your glass is mounted to high compared to the end rollers , if you lowered it the bump might be negligible ! ?
No that doesn't affect anything.
Can you remove the plate to do convex edges on cleavers?
If I used a belt sander professionally then yes, I could justify spending that much on a sander. However, when I only use one maybe twice a year for projects around the house or in the garage, the WEN I have makes much more sense economically.
I have the "pro" 1 hp version and it's better than this one for only $240 and they have a 1.5 hp industrial version for $450 on a stand. Bucktool has raised their game nicely. Their 1 hp bench grinder is excellent also. @ the 13:00 he explains all the things he would like to see upgraded and the new Bucktool answers every one of them.
Could you order a ste 1 and 1/2 horsepower electric motor and swap that out for that three quarter horse motor?
Where did you get the platen liner? The ceramic piece.
Where can I get the 4x36 ceramic platen? None of the sellers on amazon or ebay seem to have this size.
Looking for ceramic glass platen for this. USAknifemaker is out of stock. Thanks
Well Bucktool now makes a more powerful and upgraded version of their 4x36 belt sander, so that's good news.
Is this possibly to buy in UK as to expensive to ship from USA
Good stuff, thanks for posting.
Interesting about adding glass to the platten. I'll look for ceramic fireplace glass. Did you consider grinding the square edges off... maybe just the leading edge? Or is that not possible with this sort of glass?
How does a bench grinder with the razor sharp edge making system compare?
Where can I get the ceramic pad?
I’d like to see how the shelf or lip was set up to hold the ceramic. What did you use?
What kind of glass did you use for the base???
its glass for a fireplace,godbless
Industrial 4x36 belt sander, McMaster-Carr part# 4625A12, horizontal or vertical, 7 amp 1/2 horse motor, made in USA, $705.00
Thank you very much. A very helpful video, you have persuaded me to buy one.
You should get the newer 1HP model and review it. Or not
This is what I need to replace my weak Delta 4x36. I'm grateful to have it and it's better than having no sander at all, but it bogs so quickly. I like this one. What RPM is the motor?
