Orchids in Nature: How to Find "Wild" Orchids In Situ Near You

- I needed to get away for a while, so I took a road trip to find some wild orchids in nature near me. I used the website "Go Orchids" to help me identify what grows in Kansas, yet it works for all the 50 states. The URL isgoorchids.northamericanorchid...
I never found the 2 orchids I was looking for, but I had fun...and I believe that counts too.
The images of the Corallorhiza wisteriana and the Calopogon oklahomensisare not mine (since I didn't find them). They are in public domain, but I always like to credit the photographer since she did an amazing job at taking these pictures. These are not in any particular order: (1) "Calopogon oklahomensis" by sonnia hill is licensed under CC BY 2.0 and (2)"Corallorhiza wisteriana" by sonnia hill is licensed under CC BY 2.0.
On Orchideria.com, you can find more in-depth guides and all the access to our information, tutorials, guides, and much more... all for free!
Happy Cultivating!

By no means do I consider myself an expert but I'm an avid learner and willing to share the little I know with others. There are thousands of different ways to care for orchids, and the more we share, the more we learn.
What started out as a hobby has now grown into a passion, producing an online resource of quality information on how to connect with nature.

This is great advice about wild orchids and their conservation. Good tips. I wish you could have had more fun out there in the wild area. You seem more comfortable in the studio. Practice, practice, practice.
Great video. Looks like fun.
Hi Bettapal, This one was fun to make. :) Thanks for the watching and for leaving a comment. I apprecaite it.
Fascinating. I just looked up the wild ones in my area. Had no idea those pictures were orchids! Figured with the snow and cold here for many months of the year they wouldn’t grow much here in Ontario as the season would be too short. They must be very resilient terrestrial species to cope and rebloom annually.
Hi Tara, It's amazing, isn't it! I was shocked too because here in Kansas we have both the extreme heat and the extreme cold. Thanks for watching!
So cool! Thanks for sharing the site. 67 (mostly terrestrial) orchids in NC!🤯
Hi doverdarby, wow! I didn't know that! Amazing!! Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment.
I’d love to do this, even just watching you do it was interesting and entertaining. You should do more of these, maybe make it a series. Great video, as always.
Hi Boris, Thank you! I wanted to test an see if a video like this would be interesting yet entertaining... I still have soooo much to learn about making youtube videos. At least I had fun making it. :)
@@Orchideria Having fun while making your videos will inevitably make them better! You’re doing great, keep up the good work 👍
😊😊😊 I appreciate it!! 🙏
Hi, beautiful scenery. Thank you so much for the video. Makes me wonder what orchids we have here growing in Trinidad in our hot and humid forests. Warm greetings from the sunny southern Caribbean 😎🌴☀
Hi Nicole, I was really shocked when I saw that 20 orchids grew near me... I wonder if there is a "universal" site that several countries can use more globally. That would be amazing. Actually, I'll look into it and see if I can find one. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Hi Nicole, I was wondering the same about St Lucia!! I know for sure Jamaica has an Orchid Society, and have quite a few indigenous orchid species/varieties over there. Of course, we have the wild vanilla, a few wild epidendrums, and who knows what else. Nice to see you on here. YAY!!
Hi Amanda!! Great video - LOTS of food for thought there! I visited my orchid enthusiast friend today, and she showed me a terrestrial orchid she has growing in her yard, with huge palm-like leaves. Of course, she has no idea the type or anything. Apparently it has bloomed, and the spikes are there to prove it. She has offered me a plant when it sends new keikis. But - it can only be grown outdoors.
Hi Lyn! Thanks for the comment,, and for watching my videos. Hey wait, you know each other??? What a small world! Yeah! It's great to see people connecting. 😊
@@Orchideria No, I do not know Nicole Wildman ... it's just great to see another Caribbean enthusiast on your channel!! so, I sent her a "hail" ...
Well, that works too!! 😊😊😊
I had no idea there are orchids in Kansas. I will need to go exploring.
Hi Karen, I didn't either! 😊😊 Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment.
Tried that website...it worked once then started giving me error pages. Maybe they don't maintenance or update it?
I'll have to check
