    OK adding an update to all the videos....New part arrived and I have installed it a few days back. I saw a post about GM saying voltages don't match or something like along those lines. That may be true but keep in mind they are nearly the same thing so the difference will be slight. Also the note about warranty is completely true, if you modify something on your truck that part will no longer have a warranty. So keep in mind if you modify the factory part that does not work and make it work, it will not be under warranty.The new box is almost all plastic and includes an LG logo, very encouraging. It has the same mounts and fits back like the old box. Both are powered by a 6 pin connector but they are slightly different. I was able to trim two plastic ribs off the original connector and the pin patterns are identical, six pins, three that have wires attached. So it inserted fine and I put the whole thing back together and it works. I notice it works a little different than the old unit. There is about a five second delay, then the phone starts charging and the charge symbol appears on the dash. You can take it on and off, it charges easily. Even if it slides a bit it seems to keep charging. The 2018 part number for GMC is 13521066, I paid 152 dollars for mine. So mine is in and it works. I would say if you can get a dealership to do it for you, go ahead. If you want to do it yourself, go ahead. If you are worried about a warranty on a part that doesn't work properly anyway, then plug in your iPhone and leave it alone. I suspect that GM will not issue any service updates or bulletins since it would cost them a pretty penny and they have already addressed it going forward.

      thecheddarnut I wish that you made a new video to show us the new part and explain the difference specially with the 6 pin connector. Anyway if you keep the repeater and removing the small magnets it will work fine with no problem . JUST KEEP THE REPEATER IN THE OLD MODULE

    Best. Hack. Ever. Thank you for posting this! I tried it & it works great with my 2017 GMC Sierra and iPhone X. My theory is that the piece you removed is a receiver that was designed by the risk-averse GM engineers to reduce the charger’s overall output, which is silly given the low amounts of power involved in wireless charging. You deserve a medal for figuring it out!

    GM couldn’t do anything for me. I had a 2015 and just recently got a 2017 Cadillac Escalade. iPhone 8 Plus doesn’t fit well and doesn’t charge. iPhone X fits perfectly and doesn’t charge. What a pile, wrote a nasty review on there site. Regardless I did what you said in this video right now and it works like a champ!!!!! Dude thank you so much this is a game changer!

    Thanks thecheddarnut . Once I cracked open the box the coils and repeater were glued in completely differently, but I got the magnet out. It works now with my iPhoneX wheter the phone is there when i start the car or not. However, I haven't been able to get it to stay charging for more than about 5 minutes. It just stops, not du to bumps, shifting location, or any other change to the phone location. If I remove the phone for 5 seconds and replace it, it starts charging again...for a few minutes. Contemplating the "reset" switch suggested by SickFlow or just buying the 2018 module. Either way, great hack! Took no time at all! 2016 GMC Sierra 1500SLT

      Cullen Hines You should consult a GM specialist about the hack you did because it could potentially do harm to your charger in your vehicle or to your phone. Removing parts without knowing the outcome is never a good idea. It may be a harmless hack, but we don’t know that for sure. Someone trained to know your vehicle will. I want to try this, but I will probably seek the advice of a GM specialist first.

    In the interest of clarity I want to share a few points. I am the kind of person who will take apart stuff to see how it works and occasionally fix something. After reading a lot online, it is pretty clear that GM launched a half baked charger and stuck with it since they probably ordered a million or something. The 2014-2017 GM trucks all seem to use the same part number for the wireless charging unit and they all seem to work on smaller phones, 2-3 generations back from current tech. So I didn't want to waste time going through the service visits to have the dealership show me the list posted earlier about unsupported phones. So after a little exploratory surgery and experimentation, I discovered a possible fix. First I removed the rubber pad, added the phone, no effect. Then I removed the cover of the charger, leaving the unit inside intact, added the phone, no effect. Then I unplugged the receiver pad and removed the magnet, added the phone, charger worked. Added the cover back on the charger, phone still charged. Added the rubber pad, phone still charged. Put the whole thing back together and the charger still worked. The end. I have been using it for a while, it seems to work. I like the idea posted by another person about ordering a 2018 part if it turns out to work well. I would order the module if that turns out to work, the 2017 module costs about 150 bucks online. But I would like to see it confirmed before I do... So as far as it goes, try it if you want, call your dealer if you want. If anyone has luck with a dealer, please post it . Keep in mind, I ain't selling the idea, just sharing what worked for me.

      thecheddarnut thanks for the video you made it was very helpful to me, I removed my rubber pad and tried to charge my iPhone X and Samsung note 5 and start charging for a second and stoped so I went to my dealer today to test my iPhone X on a 2018 Chevy Silverado and it worked just fine so I am gonna have them order me a 2018 charging module , I don’t think they will charge me for that because of the good relation I have with my dealer , thanks to your video I can get away just ordering module thanks again.

      Just as an FYI, my understanding is that the 2018 charger connects with a 4 pin plug, while the 2017 & earlier chargers connect with a 6 pin plug, so you may have to splice into wires to get the 2018 charger to work in a 2017 or earlier vehicle. For me, your hack seems much easier than having to splice wires. Interestingly, even though the 2017 has a 6 pin plug, only 2 of the pins are used--there are only 2 wires going to the charger.

      You have to knock it loose, mine at least was glued down, a little tap with a small screw driver (like you would use a chisel) to pop it out. Very little force.

    The problem is not with the receiver, the problem is with the small magnet in the device.
    I tried in my 2016 GMC Yukon Denali and it is working very well with removing only the small magnet

  • @IslenoGutierrez
    @IslenoGutierrez 7 років тому

    That piece you took out is called a receiver. So the receiver is the problem. If some GM vehicles have issues if they remove that receiver, a receiver from the parts department for one of the select 2018 GM vehicles that have compatible charging ports should work. I see it works for you to remove the receiver, but for some people commenting here, it didn’t work on their GM vehicle. Just an idea. Maybe one could purchase the entire charger for one of the select 2018 vehicles and install it into their pre-2018 vehicle, if this fix didn’t work for them and they could not purchase the receiver alone. Just a thought.

    I have an iPhone XS. I purchased a module for the 2018 and spent $100 online to put in my 2017 GMC and the module went out in less than a year. So, 15 minutes could have saved me $100? Is it still working? Are there any repercussions with damage to anything, i.e. phone battery, etc?

    Cheddar, can you show how you modified the plug and that it actually works with the new module? I am about to buy one for my 2016 Denali and I would like to be sure I am not wasting $152. I got the wiring details on paper for my 2016 from the dealer that show what they do and I am happy to scan and email them if you like. I am still searching for the 2018 wiring details.

    I have a 2017 Sierra Denali and the wireless charger did not work with a samsung galaxy s7 edge. I tried turning around the pad but all it would do is charge for approx. 4 seconds. I then took the module apart. I found that taking it apart was not easy because the coil as well as the membrane circuit board were glued into place. I took a heat gun and carefully heated it up enough to get it to come apart. I tried it out with the pad still in the reverse position and it did not work. I then put the pad back into the original position and everything is now working great. I also found that going to a dealer and ordering a pad for a 2018 model did not work because the pad that came in for my order was the same as the 2017 pad. If you are trying to get a 2018 pad I would suggest going to a 2018 model vehicle and get the vin number from it...then give the dealer that vin number when ordering the pad.

    I have a 2018 Sierra Denali that I just bought. I have the Samsung S9+ phone and my wireless charger just barely works with my phone. The only way I can get it to register and charge is to turn it upside down (so the home button is facing the dash, not face down) and slide all the way to the read (toward the rear seats). I do have a case on the phone but have tried it caseless and have the same issue. Even when it does register and charge is pathetically slow. Will doing any of this help me? Seems you Apple junkies can't charge whatsoever and don't want to tear into it if it won't.

  • @altechke
    @altechke 7 років тому

    Question, when you place your phone on the charger, does it display on the dash screen that phone is charging? If not, then that might be what that thin piece is for. It is to sense when there is a phone charging. According to the manual, when there is a phone placed on the charger is should display on the dash that a phone is charging.

    • @kimevans7420
      @kimevans7420 7 років тому

      I did the hack (removed the thin piece) and, yes, there is a green arrow that displays on the dash when the phone is charging, so the thin piece doesn't affect that functionality. Others have posted that the thin piece is a receiver, but I'm not sure why a wireless charger would need both a transmitter coil and a receiver in the same box. Typically, the charger has a transmitter and the receiver is part of the phone or the phone case.

    I have an update for you guys, I went to my dealer last week to get my charger taking care of and I wanted to check the part before they install and i realized they ordered me a 2017 armrest , they thought my charger is bad and I told them not to do anything because it is not gonna make any difference and we went out to dealer lot and check the 2017 trucks and Tahoe and suburbans to confirm that none of the 2017s charges new phones than they check the wiring on the 2018 models and they said it will work but they can’t ordered me 2018 under warranty, they said they have to prefer it under my vin number so luckily my brother has 2018 high country and they gonna order me another armrest with his vin number, I guess we will see what’s gonna happen when they get it, they also said it might be a while to get 2018 armrest because they don’t have any in stock from wherever they get it I guess so I am just gonna wait and see, good thing I don’t have to pay for it otherwise $410 to get the 2018 high country armrest with the charger.

      Based on comments, the change has worked in gmc and chevy since GM uses parts across both trucks. Also note there is also an option to swap in a 2018 part, although you will have to get the part direct from your dealer. I have another video posted about that as well. Your part number will be different and also some have posted that dealers will do it under warranty...not sure about chevy though. Someone posted about the dealer ordering a new part and a conversion plug, I just trimmed my 2017 plug to fit the 2018 part.

    Just tried this on my Sierra but as I was separating the module to open it, the coils began unraveling. They looked to be super glued to the black plastic casing. I used a flathead screwdriver to pry it off and put the coils back to their initial position as best I can. When I close up the module and hook up the connector, my iPhone X wirelessly charges for 5 seconds and stops. When I lift the phone and put it back on the pad, no charge. Any clue why this is happening?

    • @thecheddarnut
      @thecheddarnut  7 років тому

      Well I guess I was lucky that mine didn’t separate. My coils stayed glued down and the green plastic sheet pulled away along with the magnet. Did you also remove the small silver button magnet in the center of the coils? That has to be removed as well.

    • @adamzats1775

      thecheddarnut I did remove that little magnet in the middle. If I put my iPhone X on the pad and start my truck it works flawlessly. The second I lift the phone off the mat and return it to the mat it doesn’t charge. If I turn my truck off then on again it’ll start to charge once again.

      @IslenoGutierrez 7 років тому

      Adam Zats A better option would to purchase a wireless charger for one of the select 2018 GM vehicles that support iPhone X and 8. We don’t know if removing the receiver may cause issues for the vehicle or the phone in time. The 2018 receivers may be available from the parts dept or online, but it may not be so simple. This “fix” from the video may work for some gm vehicles and not for others, but we don’t know if there will be a long time issue for the vehicle or the phone. Probably best to speak with a GM specialist about this issue. I’m guessing you can just swap out chargers for a 2018 charger and install it.

      @thecheddarnut  7 років тому

      No, not surprised to find that neither GM nor the company actually posts diagrams or details about the module and its guts. Based on my examination, I would say its a repeater designed to even out or extend the field. But it doesn't seem to work, important to realize the tech is 4 -5 years out of date. Phones have changed a lot.

    • @rickinsav
      @rickinsav 7 років тому +1

      Not sure that it is a repeater. GM has documentation on their wireless charging in 2016 (and assuming 2017) models. They say it supports Qi cert level 1 and 2 as well as Powermat. I think this is an add-on that is supposed to add in support for one of these three. I can say that turning the mat around works very nicely for dropping in Samsung phones, but makes no difference with my mat with my X. Anyone have the 2018 part number for the silver box? The one on my 2017 Denali HD is 23248791

I would gladly do the hack (THANKS FOR POSTING IT , CHEDDAR!) if it charges without being flat on the pad. If anyone has had success with an iPhone 8+ in a Defender case please post about it.

      Nope, your iphone 8+ with a case is bigger than the spot to lay the phone. Not a tech issue, just a size thing.

    Does this work on a 2017 camaro? 😱😱😱😭
    Btw, one of their Chevy “tech experts” flat out told me that GM purposely sold something that doesn’t work. The fucking nerve...

    Shady GM putting obsolete parts in vehicles. I have a 2017 and I just called the dealership and they told me it only works with old phones like Galaxy 5 and it costs $500 to put that module in. I seen the part online as low as $60.

    For those who have the issue of wireless charging only working when starting your truck or car with your phone in the charging pad- I added a small toggle switch to reset the pad.
    Real easy - split the black wire - route between the wire to simple on / off toggle switch. Drill small hole for the toggle switch. reset the pad at anytime using the toggle switch, inside the arm rest cover

      SickFlow No need for that. Keep the green repeater connected to module and remove the small silver magnet

      Tried with the repeater attached after removing the magnet but still had an issue. Seems uncommon but read others had the same issue.

      SickFlow work fine with me with removing only the magnet
