As a woman on ADHD medication I'm glad to hear someone addressing the fact that high energy levels in boys are normal, not a symptom of some medical condition. I was in fourth grade in 1963. My class was full of boys with lots of energy. The teacher would have those antsy boys run around the outside of that building as fast as they could, as many times as they could multiple times a day in order to be able to teach them something. It worked. LOL. Great advice.

I co teach severe special ed, but I get a kid every now and then that really doesn’t need my class - they’ve just gotta move! I have them pick up the lunches or “run as fast as you can to check the mailbox”! when they’ve got the wiggles. If more administrators that teachers have always realized that kids can listen if you let them move, we’d have far less kiddos struggling.

Funny story about hosing off saddle blankets. Not only on farcical level of her thinking she should soak them - but if she’d been working the horse hard it makes sense to occasionally rinse off the sweat. So woman in story could well have run her horses hard and been washing off some sweat.

Dwayne, this video was absolutely spot on! I used to be very active, but now physical disabilities make that nearly impossible for me and I think I'm on the verge of going insane. I'm suffering from anxiety and other issues that I know would go away if I could just get out and do things again.
You were absolutely right about boys. They belong outside. They need to get dirty and sweaty and tired. They don't need Ridalin, they need fresh air and sunlight and physical activity and adventure. Real adventure, not the kind of preprogrammed junk that comes from a video game. These overprotective helicopter parents keep them restricted almost like prisoners. When I used to ride my bike or drive through the neighborhood where I grew up, kids were everywhere outside, especially in the summer. Now, I drive through my neighborhood on a beautiful summer day and the streets and lawns are empty. I don't see a single kid. The whole country needs to see this video. Please don't ever stop putting these types of messages out there.

He was a great man and his philosophy was the same as yours for teaching your horses, your boys (and for him the same with his hounds and cur dogs). The neat thing was he was always right there leading the way. I babied my horse for a long time, not much hard work. Then I had a girl at the barn who wanted to ride him occasionally and she really rode him ! Sometimes I would wince at how much she asked of him…well this girl is now moving on to another place and I’m quite sad, because my horse was a much happier horse with her level of riding ! I also feel like a bond would form anyway when you spend a lot of time in the saddle with your horse and take care of your horse. It’s just a natural progression of things. So I have resolved to work my horse more, for his benefit and mine !

Since seeing you smoking a cigar, I wanted to try the Partagas Maduro that you smoke. I was smoking cigars for over 31 years. A few months ago, I quit smoking cigars because it's so expensive in California. The Tobacco Tax here is 60%!! I used to buy boxes of cigars and stored them in a End Table sized Humidor. I won the Humidor in a raffle years ago. It can hold 25 boxes of cigars and can keep the humidity at 70% automatically.
Now, I want to try the Partagas Maduro. I was lucky enough to find that cigar at Total Wine. I can't wait to try it.

I came to this video a bit late but just wanted to say a couple things: Your commentary on not needing an emotional connection with your horse is more refreshing than you realize. I grew up riding, breaking, and breeding horses and was constantly made to feel (always by other women) that I was somehow heartless for putting forth the notion that a professional, not an emotional, bond was required for what we did. Hearing someone actually acknowledge this makes me feel good. So thank you. Also, people severely underestimate the importance of tiring one's self out. My husband and I do every single thing ourselves, we hit the gym 5x a week, we mountain bike, and dirt bike. We always joke that we're never "refreshed" after a weekend physically, but mentally we are at absolute serenity because of how active we are. We have no children yet, but will within the next 2 years, and we fully intend on raising them like you stated. Thank you for your wise words.

It's like taking a concert speaker and throwing wet blankets on it to dull the sound until it's at a level to suit a classroom. Concert speakers aren't designed for classrooms they're designed for stadiums but schools don't see it that way. Sit down, stay still, shut up, and study 8+ hours a day.
Things are better now, jiu-jitsu and weights have been really good for me. Personally, I intend on keeping my kids away from meds.

i live in an urban environment and found that through bouldering in a gym not only is it super fun and challenging but also incredibly tiring which is one of my favourite parts of it, seeing how far i can push my body (and the skin of my hands) before i’m too tired to keep going

Dwayne I’ve had customers for a long time. You don’t bond with them you build relationships with them. Strictly business. Pretty simple formula is work well for me for years. Awesome video brother.👍👍👍

It doesn’t matter how often we train our horse or how hard we train our horse, if we do not work them to the point that they get tired, we are wasting our time.

I agree with what your saying about the power of excersize. I believe that with depression, anxiety, anger ect. excersize does not tire you and into not caring, but it is rewarding to your body and re sets your emotional state. Like what you said about sweating out the toxins. Thank you for sharing your wisdom

I aleyas hate mowing my grass. One of my least favorite things to do. Especially because I can’t listen to music. But then when I start doing doing it, I love it. I think to myself and mentally vent and just have conversations with myself and reflect. It’s always, always something I DO end up enjoying and I always wish I could mow more.

My first job at 13 was on a ranch throwing hay and cleaning horse stalls. We would take customers for rides. You’re absolutely right, you don’t need to bond with a well trained/worked horse. The horse is just doing a job. I’m 45 now and still figuring this life thing out. 😂great video!

Now watching my son drinking out of the hose Living his life ide open washing up in the creek at the end of the day. Because he wants to not Because he has to. We both are so tired at the end of each day we can hardly get to bed. Just the way it should be.

Dewayne, you are absolutely right. I've told my wife, if someone is depressed, there is no amount of pain they are feeling compared to walking 20 minutes on a stair stepping machine. I have to remind myself of that at times. Love your talks. I'm smoking a Punch Corojo listening this evening, wishing you the best from East TN.

This is huge. Thankfully, I am good at running myself till I’m tired. And I personally need to find more time to rest so I can focus some on what’s going on in my mind. And not a sit-on-the-couch type of rest, but a very intentionally time with God type of rest.
Thank you for affirming that working and moving till you can’t any longer works. I am not a very reactive person when I am too tired for any of it. Thank you for your videos and topics.

I was a problematic child. Lots of energy and never thought about consequences until after I messed up. My parents tried Ritalin, grounding me for months at a time, screaming at me, threatening to give me up, taking 2x4 across my rear end, etc. finally in my junior year of high school they gave up. That same semester I started attending an afternoon class at another school, and I would rollerblade 15+ miles a day Monday-Friday. Wouldn’t you know it, but I was able to calm down, do my work, and stay out of trouble. Instead of being locked in a room only being allowed to to come out for school or cleaning the house, I was exerting myself for a few hours a day rollerblading between campuses. I really flourished when they finally gave up. Exertion is great to zap that excess energy, and I plan on using this when I have my own ankle biter.
