This is brilliant. I've read anthropologist talk about this. But never linked it to seidr. Robert Sepehr has a video about the ointment. I think you figured it out personally.
My family taught me when I was little to keep my kitchen broom securely in a corner or closet because if it fell over to the floor, unexpected company was coming. It never failed, so the damned thing is in the basement now. I use the central vacuum instead.
Thank you for that video, it makes sense and it’s refreshing to see someone who’s interpreting different sources and connecting the dots as oppose to just being spoon fed facts, awesome job buddy!
I can see now why this would be even more shameful for a man to be envolved with. What these orifices both have in common is the mucous membrane glands. It would work to take the ointment this way. Because it is effective, this is why we have modern medicines ingested in the form of an enema.
I practice Seidr and Galdr I use a staff which is more like a bo staff and spin it around and dance while I go into an ecstatic trance. It shifts my consciousness without me having to do any drugs. Then there’s the more passive Seidr technique where I lie down turn some ambient music on and go subconscious so I can go shamanic journeying to retrieve information from the other worlds. I was practising this even before I came across the term Seidr when I was first introduced to the term Seidr And looked into it I was like “so this is what I practice then”.
the spindle is tied to the fates, by the spindle or the wheel of the fates, clothos spinning wheel, in greek, it is also mentioned in finnish myth with the kalevala, and in norse it is tied to frigga (Frigg, Wife of Odin and wiser than the one eyed god himself) the sting or the tip with the point is positioned on a stafflike rod - known as a distaff - the Rock or the 'rok' as many scandinavians would call it ... and with her spindle and distaff she weaves the clouds... and alternately she and Freyja is thought to be the very same.... frigg in germanic (not scandinavian) was first known as Frea or Fria and according to some legends freja taught odinn how to perform seidr
I'm trying to replicate the dress and accessories of the Fyrkat Völva for my historic reenactment group. In her grave they found a bowl which contained 'a fatty substance', covered with a lid made out of grass. Could this fatty substance have been henbane salve? She also had a pouch holding henbane seeds.
In most homes women brewed their own beer. If a woman made too much beer she would hang a broom outside her door to signify she had extra beer for sale.
Makes sense to me. I mean in the grimoire called "The sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage" we have a similar thing where Abraham of Worms meets this woman who has an ointment like this and makes Abraham feel like he's lifted his body and flying around. This is in the opening chapters of the book as he's looking for Abramelin but meeting all these other wizards and witches around the country.
I think its amazing our culture language and religion survived the Christians especially being found so early In history and so close to the royal family many other peoples didn't survive or where almost completely erased in a few hundred years one of them was Nz moari they only survived because of the treaty came about rather quick after the arrival of cpt cook and they still lost alot.
As a Norwegian you've probably heard of Blokksberg. This is Brocken in Germany, the highest peak in the Harz mountains, from where the Harudes that gave the name to Hordaland, came from. It has longer connection back in time then tales from the middle ages about witches sabbaths and broomsticks I believe. There's a special light phenomena there, the so called Brochen-specter, from the light and the fog. HochHarz is mentioned as the last refuge in Saxony where the pagans persecuted by Charlemagne was located, and so later this area came - alongside the "specter" on Brochsberg, was probably the source of devil-worship by witches there. There's a book called "Harzen - Heksenes Land" with lots of interesting info I can guess you would appreciate. Some also believe that the acts by Charlemagne in themselves was what triggered attacks against holy sites for Christianity in Britain, so perhaps Lindisfarne and Iona was simple revenge-raids against for example Irminsul and Thunors Oak. The latter used as materials for a church in Denventer, I think, that was later burned in an attack by Saxons (and Danes I think?). As a Christian I blame many early missionaries that portrayed for example Peter as a great swordsman that protected his Chieftain, Jesus. A lot was done to make the faith make sense to such warlike people. Mostly the faith was later spread by economic and political incentives, in Greenland the wife of Eric the Red refused him sex until he built her a chapel, but of course there was also many that genuinely became believers in the Gospel.
If seidr and galdr originated with the Saami, then wouldn't it also make sense that they used fly agaric amanita muscaria mushrooms as the Saami did? Among the Sami (Laplander) peoples, the hallucinations associated with ingestion of fly agaric gave the sensation of flying in a “spiritual sleigh” pulled by reindeer or horses (i.e., Santa in his sleigh journeying out into the night to give gifts).
It also makes sense they would use a distaff once Christianity started taking hold since that is an everyday weaving item that would be in the home. Great breakdown. I think you present a strong argument
This is a pretty strong theory and I have heard of this. Another medicine that makes you feel like you are flying is fly agaric mushroom, Siberian Shamans would harvest these in the autumn and dry them in conifer trees ( like squirrels do with slippery jacks) they built caribou hide skies which allowed them to climb hills in the snow when they descended from the hills they would use a staff or a broomstick as a break between their legs. Possibly a town folk or two, saw an old hag that lives out of town coming back down the sloops from collecting her stash of fly agaric, riding on her broomstick. May have appeared she was flying? I know that drugs were introduced virginally at night sabbaths by pagan witches, maybe it could be a combination of both. Gossip usually only gets half-truths at best.
I think the ritual having to be elevated definitely was explained to be for the spirits to see a full view, but I think it also had the function of reinforcement and as an assurance to onlookers, that the ritual was real and the person performing it, was indeed in a true trance
Many medications are administered via suppositories. Absorption of chemicals is faster when taken as a suppository than when taken orally. Either way it makes its way to the digestive track where the chemicals are absorbed and up regulated into the endocrine system and brain. Dr will do this when a patient has trouble swallowing and at risk of chocking. Taking drugs up the butt is a great way to get effects when smoking or eating are not possible. Kids these days do something called beer butt. It involves a funnel, a hose, and a beer.
Strippers dance sexually to music (music being a form of the 4 "D"s of altered states of consciousness Drugs, Drumming, Dance, Dreaming) they also dance by rubbing the pole between their legs on their vulva. Is this a long lost connection to Seidr and Euro witchcraft?
Then there is also this suspicion that the village people would ingest rye that had ergot (contains lsd) in it, causing them to hallucinate and think they saw witches flying on broomsticks
Very informative video thanks . We have LSD or practice of meditation these days to reach these mind states. No stick will ever go into my bum :D. In the Norse practice, If anyone knows where I can look. I'm looking to listen or read for knowing signs of bad things to come. Such as Glencoe where they knew someone bad was coming in 1692, so many left the village. In when we death is close. Another is knowing when travelling folk on foot or going to have accidents and the part of the body the pain will be as they fall. It goes back though centuries of our Norse Gael history and spoken history past down.
I don't know if seidr is the right name though? Isn't seidr all kinds of things? I thought it was more like custom or tradition, like a set of habitual rites that was performed, or something like that? Maybe this could be a part of it perhaps? Or am I wrong?
In a way yes. I have read that too. Seidr in the viking age was for sure just a very specific ritual. Lots of records of that. But looking at much older meanings of the word, it is possible that long before the viking age, it meant someting like tradition/custom like you said.
I think that using records from witch trials as a confirmed source is a bit dodgy. Most of these records and "confessions" were extracted under torture, and the questions were often led by the "examiners" to achieve the results that they wanted. It's not difficult to do. I would posit that the "confessions" revealed by the so-called witches were simply the fantasies of the sexually repressed witch hunters. I think that broom riding, now known as hedge riding, came from a trance technique where the World Tree is used to travel between the worlds. Nothing sexual about it.
I'm curious about two things. First, was it only shameful because after Christianization sexuality was considered shameful, or was it shameful before? Second, what do the arkeological records and texts reveal about gender roles in the Germanic world during pagan times?
I got the same question. I think he said "it was really totally out lawed when the christians came". But, it kinda sounded like it was kinda looked down anyway by locals. Idk , dont quote me though.
It was shameful before as the ritual was done in public so for a woman your doing drugs and masterbating on a public podium for a man it was even more shameful as you where being ahem penetrated in public in a culture where the ones taking it where considered weak and unmannly for a woman this is more okay as it is there expected gender role in the society for a man well it not a good look to say the least
Very interesting point of view and I think very possible to exist in this form. Myth have always some seed of truth. What are your thoughts on the theories that seidr wasn't considered shameful to the norse people and that it is the misogynistic christian influence that we have to look through that cast it in a shameful light.
In eastern medicine (I believe India), the belly button is used to absorb oils, it is supposed to be more effective than ingesting something because it goes directly to the blood stream
When ingested through genitals it goes directly into your bloodstream.. When you eat or drink it your stomach has to break it down with enzymes, and all the indigestable waste has to pass through your intestines.. Maybe that is why??

Perhaps that was what the original seidhr people did (plus they seemed to be quite in touch with Saami shamans), long before the viking age. Being doing this for close to 30 years, and I'm now 58. I think I have it in my blood. I'm half Spanish, from Seville, where the Vikings raided, but with lots of Germanic blood in me, and American, with lots of Germanic blood in me, too. Who knows...
You drink tea, alcohol ,you eat suger drink coffie smoke 🚬 there all stimulants and seditives which are all mind altering substances you take any medication well then you do drugs. if you gt cancer you would beg for drugs you would need them and love the benefit of a tolerable life and a pain-free death. @@jamesonz2898 I drink no tea, coffee (or other caffeinated drinks), no alcohol, no sugar or processed foods, no smoking. I'm a vegan who only eats and drinks organic products. And the drugs I mention I never take are psychodelic and recreational drugs. If I had cancer, yes, they'd give me drugs. But for me, that is considered medication, and for now, thank the gods, I have no health issues. So maybe you're the one lacking understanding of my personal and private life. No offense, but you don't know me at all. I hate each and every recreational and psychodelic drug. All they do is suck up all energy from your aura and chakras. So I know what I'm talking about. I'm an energy worker and healer.
Mary Hill sory bt if you where clothes or wear make up they'll contain animal products or are processed with chemicals even if you believe u take no drugs you still use them your own brain produces substances which are drugs which have the same effects as drugs which serve vital purposes your own dreams are produced by a substance called DMT dimetheltriptamen so yes you do take drugs I respect your life choices and think it good you try thinking of alternative life styles which may ease suffering bt you shouldn't demonize something you have little experience or knowledge about especially considering they help alot of people heal and escape incredibly pain saying you hate drugs is damening and condescending to those who chose differently.
@@jamesonz2898 Sorry, but, basically, if you are in the U.S., even more so than in Europe, there are chemicals everywhere: in the air, in the water, in the earth. after "riding" a broomstick
Apparently, witches are natural stoners

In eastern medicine (I believe India), the belly button is used to absorb oils, it is supposed to be more effective than ingesting something because it goes directly to the blood stream
I see this advocated by producers/users of today's essential oils, so it's probably correct that they did this before as well.
But how they kept genitals safe if the stomachs would suffer a lot? I can't understand this...

@@jamesonz2898 dont argue with the virtuous person
What I mean here is recreational drugs, and psychodelics. I'm not referring to pain killers. My mother died of cancer. I know what this is like.
