You would use the same lifters and pushrods and cam after going thru all that work and money?? I wouldn't admit that my friend if you depend on engine rebuilds for a living. Not many customers will want to spend the mo ey on labor and not spend the few bucks extra to do it right , especially on a 250k mile engine

I love watching y'all's videos, I remember when I was a kid my parents and I built a 283 in our living room. The only machine work was the boring 40 over. I remember dad polished the crank shaft with a leather strap semilar to what you doing with the sand paper. The next day I came home from school and mom and dad were adjusting the lifters while it was running, Dad was old school. Anyway by that evening it was running good and we drove it to the gas station and jumped on I 75 north and drove it 1200 miles it's maiden voyage from FL to Ohio. Change oil and filter and Drove home. Love that it's a family thing. My new favorite show

The secret to ring groove cleaning (at least in the compresson grooves) is to take an old ring and break it in half, then use the sharp edge to scrape out the carbon in the groove. Works VERY well!

I tell you what, mate. After watching this video, I don't feel daunted about tearing into an engine again. Last one I did was 30 years ago and when I was faced with doing work on one of mine recently, I chickened out, letting a mate of mine do it all for me. Body work, welding, panelbeating - no problem, but an engine? Nope. After seeing this (and remembering back to what I'd done many years ago), I almost find myself looking forward to tearing down and rebuilding the engine on a project car I'll be taking on in a couple of months. The engine is an unknown that "ran wen parked" and I was tossing up about just dropping it in and seeing how it went.....when really what I WANTED to do is pull it down and check it first....so I'm gonna have a go!
I completely agree with you about auto transmissions though. Even my Dad with 30 years of building performance engines for family and race vehicles would not touch one. Manual gearboxes - yep, no problem, but autos, nope. He described their internals as witchcraft and couldn't get his head around how they do what they do.....and having seen the auto box on one of my vehicles in pieces on the workbench of the rebuild shop, I completely agree with him. Even though the bloke talked me through how it worked, with the solenoids, pressure through certain passages doing one thing and valves doing others, it still seemed like witchcraft to me!
Looking forward to hearing this baby fire up when she's in place and everything is hooked up. I bet all three of your young 'uns will get a huge kick in their confidence when she fires too, considering they've all had a hand in rebuilding the beast. That old camper won't know itself when she gets back on the road!
    All the best

Watching you and the fam makes me happy. I was born 50 years too early sometimes I think and fifty years too late other times. 59 years ago when I was working on old iron Chevy small blocks and a British 4 banger all we had were books. You make me believe I could do this. Thank you. Back then there was too much learning on the job, shop manuals, and no real mentor, so it just did not work out that great at times. I built a very smoky four cylinder and a 327 with 202 heads, crane comp cam, new lifters and valve springs and push rods that lasted about a year before she blew. (I was a little hard on her though). It was so much fun but so stressful. Thanks for making feel like I need a shop again.

I'm a life-long Mopar fan, and I can remember helping to rebuild my 340 Cubic-inch Plymouth motor for my 'cuda in our house's garage; I remember my room-mate hand-honing the cylinder walls and doing LOTS of cleaning. He had micrometer guages - no Plasti-gage for US!LOL! I think we would've been thrilled to have all these goodies to help with the cleaning and stuff. Air tools are a life-saver. That 340 engine was a screamer; the speedometer would go up to the "P" in "MPH" on the dial(about 135 mph); I never had the nerve to ask a "friendly policeman" to clock me with his radar-gun.
Great memories, this video has brought back - Thanks for posting this! Good to see that you're sharing your skills with your family; I think that EVERY child should be exposed to this stuff, to see if they like it. It used to be that EVERY boy helped his dad change the oil and tires and stuff; Jiffy-lube made us into a nation of lazy men. When I went to college for electronics in the 1980s, there was a girl in my class who used to restore old Harley motors.
I just KNOW that there's girls out there who work as bank clerks, who would be just as happy turning wrenches. It's too bad our society brainwashes and segregates them; the STEM classes are a step, but we're badly mis-using a National resource; a large number of potential mechanics and machinists, because of prejudiced school administrators(actually, they're STUPID, but they got their prejudice from church, in a lot of cases, and I don't wanna argue with anybody).
Thanks for your videos; keep up the good work!

This one feels like a masterclass on engine rebuilding. Tearing this one down and doing all the work on it, there's no way not to learn something. One of the best learning opportunities in this one is how to be the best dad and not go off on your daughter when she swings the hammer too early and almost creates a situation. Dad's restraint and keeping himself together in that one second is priceless. Granted, no one knows if there might have been some editing involved after that second, but keeping it together in that second is everything. Huge dad points on that one, for sure!
This old Minnie Winnie is getting closer to that road trip and the incredible footage that will follow. Hopefully it continues to go well and this engine is fit back into that van by now. Seeing the floors being put back in is the vid that's been worth waiting for. Looking forward to that happening soon!!

Great video ! Reminded me of the last engine job I did with my Dad before he passed away in 1990. We rebuilt the 232 straight six engine in our 1966 Jeep J - 2000 , Dad was the instructor and I was the student. We found that three of the pistons had broken rings. Fortunately they did not mess up the bore and we were able to hone them out, but we did have to buy three new pistons due to the ring grooves being stretched out. I believe we did that rebuild in 1984 and that engine still runs fine today ( I actually ran the truck today ). It does not see much road use anymore as I keep it for winter snow plowing. Those old six's were rated at 145 horsepower - not bad compared to my 1980's era Ford 302's that are rated at only 150 horsepower and 270 foot pounds of torque. Thanks for the video and hope Ralphie feels better.

The secret to cleaning piston ring lands is to put them in the ultrasonic cleaner. They will look like brand new when they come out.

Hone the bores with atf, then clean with brake clean and then atf, the detergents in the atf will pull out all the grit the brake clean missed, also lube the rings and pistons with atf when assembling and it will speed up seat in time on the rings.

This was great to see the whole family taking part in the process. It's always fun and interesting to learn some new things about the engines. The oil pressure and compression should both be higher. I've seen a lot of bearings in my life and none that looked like those. I'm anxious to hear it fire up.

Won't say everything you did and how you did it, is the same way I would, BUT,,... For the most part, you have basically made a complete how to, to rebuild or rather refurbish an engine. I think you will get good use out of it for your RV.
Thanks so much for all you do and share, and I'll give you Dad of the year award for including your family like you do!

Very helpful to me ! I have all the used parts to put together to build another good ol' 85 Turbo coupe 2.3 . This is a great refresher for me to account for everything. Getting hard to find forged pistons and a proper head with hardened valve seats. I was glad to hear you say you sent the mini Winnie trans to Curtis. I worked in Dodge service when the magnums were knew. Strong engines, poor automatic transmissions. Thanks again Josh & family !!!

I legit didn't think anyone could sound more country than my neck of the woods here in TX and way out in the middle of BFE.
I just stumbled across your channel and it was refreshing to see all of you working on this as a family. These days kids just wanna play video games all day and has no desire to even look out the window..
I was born in 87 so Im not that old but growing up we was outside riding bikes from sunset and didn't go in until it turned dark out.
Not because we had to or because we was to it's just simply what we wanted to do because we couldn't stand to be closed up in the house all day
Sometimes our parents had to track us down to get us to go inside.

      Dear Brian Newby
👍👌👏 Yes, that usually and definitely the best way to clean the grooves. 2) I was astounded that they didn't simply put the pistons in the ultrasonic cleaner. These things work fantastic.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.

I am 49 years old and I just discovered your channel. It really brought me back to my time in the garage with my dad when I was a kid. I can’t tell you how many small block Chevys we rebuilt! We built drag cars, and I loved every minute of it. My dad will be 80 this year and is STILL rebuilding engines! I’m too busy taking my daughter back and forth to swim practice!!! But I did buy an old RV last year and am getting reacquainted with my old garage skills! I love watching your family, especially the garage interactions. Really made me tear up, seriously! Kudos to you and your awesome family!!

love the videos . Love your family . Nice to see a lovely family that does things together . The animals are great . My Mom bought a 1978 Zephyr sw , dark green . It was ordered from the factory , only options radio and heated rear window. It was a 2.3 with a 4 speed . I drove it for a while after they got a new car . They drove it 10 years , no rust , always dependable. God Bless you all. More videos please . thanks

You can make a hottank pretty cheap. Go to lowes get one of the metal trash cans, fill with whatever cleaning solution you choose, get a hot water heater element. And lower your block into the trash can with engine hoist.
