'Laura Ingalls' danced very well! Let us not forget she did very well on Dancing With The Stars, so Ms. Gilbert always had rhythm. I actually like the disco arrangement of this show tune classic. This may be a slice of 1970s cheese, but I love cheese!
This posting always makes me laugh. it's so cheesy and fun. It's not something that is high art. She WAS doing those steps. She didn't stumble. She got them all right. Many people don't realize how much it takes to put on a show - even one that is cheesy. It's not easy to sing, dance, look like you are doing it easily and look like you are having fun. You go Melissa. You were really stretching and living.
I grew up in the 1970s watching Little House On The Prarie, I would never miss it, and I would have been glued to the TV set watching this, how could I not? I was an American kid from that era.
I don't know how anyone who grew up watching "Little House on the Prairie" could NOT love this! Sure, she sang like Laura Ingalls, but she had some good moves and was absolutely adorable. I'm 54 and I've NEVER looked that good dancing. Well, except that one time, but no one was around to see it.
For those saying, Melissa Gilbert couldn't dance, they should take some ballet lessons because one can see that she was able to make sweeping lifts and pirouettes. You need to know how to do splits to lift your leg high and fix your eyes on a selected point as you spin around to avoid getting dizzy. I saw Melissa's eyes fixed on something in front as she turned around just like what a ballerina would do.
Yes, people who DO dance can see obviously that Melissa had solid training. She is spotting her turns, and her quality of movement & her lines are those of a dancer, even in a fast, jazzy piece & a disco outfit. She’s hitting every move in a lovely way, all while singing live (or lip sync’ing well to her own voice), and largely keeping her space in between two grown male dancers. Not to mention, spinning and turning with her hair down and long. All while smiling and giving her joy to the world. Brava, litltle Melissa. You should be proud of your past self. I can’t imagine when she had the time to take dance classes regularly, but she is somehow trained. Good on her! Some commenters don’t know what they don’t know. Glad some folks here can see that she had real chops, which don’t happen out of nowhere; they’re built from training.
I love love love Melissa Gilbert my favorite actress of all time on my favorite TV show Little House on the Prairie singing If They Could See Me Now the disco song I love it the best ever!!!! I can dance and sing the song all day long!!!! Thanks for posting this video!!!! I love it!!!! I love the 70s!!! Can you dig it!!!!!!!
I saw this on TV-- I was 11. Why did I look it up now, at age 52? To see if it was just as corny as I remember it. Yep, sure is. (BTW, Thanks for posting--UA-cam is a national treasure).
All the big entertainment critics commenting below have so much to say. The girl was 14 years old, people. How many 14 year old's do you know who could do a 4 minute dance routine like that?? Please consider her age, very few of us were professionally complete at age 14. That routine was amazing. Can you imagine how much practice went into that?
That's nice of you to say, but every 14 year old that's on Drill Team or dance production or ballet or cheerleading has to learn routines like this. Don't underestimate our kids!
A master class in choreography for a non-dancing star. Notice Melissa is dressed to match the background while the two real dancers are in bright white. All difficult moves are done by the pro dancers. And it all works to make Melissa appear to be a dancer. Hats off to Melissa's commitment to the segment and kudos to the Choreographer.
Your comment is pretty clueless, overall. The choreography is indeed good for this segment, but Melissa is not a “non-dancer”. If you were a real dancer, you’d know that. You’d be able to see more closely what you’re viewing, versus spouting know-it-all nonsense. Also, your hypothesis about the costumes is weak and ridiculous.
Because the tastes of the general public are fickle, and also because disco was completely overexposed when it was at its peak. My older friend says "everything was disco this and disco that." People just got sick of it.
I love that you’re curious ! Great question! Because there was always a musical competition between rock and disco. And rock continued on (morseo in the form of “pop”). Disco was fantastic, but it was more than just music, it was a style, and at the end of the day, musicians/bands/singers//song-writers couldn’t be limited to one genre of expression. Rock/Popular/Folk/Contemporary was more flexible and broader. Still, disco might return one day to some degree, as a mix of nostalgia and novelty.
@@JourneyBold Disco is already back. Recent disco songs from the U.S. and UK by artists including Chic, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Jamiroquai, Bruno Mars, Luxxury, Patawawa, etc. all catalogued at the Disco Savvy website.
it always amazes me how styles that are so on point and loved at one point in time are considered totally ugly or ridiculous within just a few yrs. I am 2 yrs younger than Melissa Gilbert and I LOVED the clothes the Brady girls wore on their show, the clothes Marie Osmond wore on her show, and I am sure I would have loved this green outfit MG is wearing here. But a 12 yr old girl now would blind herself before she would put this on!
I loved the clothes the teen Brady girls wore, too. And I especially loved the super cute outfits/dresses that Mrs. Brady wore! SHe was one stylish mother! Melissa Gilbert and I are one month apart in age, and I definitely would have LOVED rocking this green satin outfit in 8th grade!!
I remember watching Melissa dancing on this show when I was 12 years old in '78 it really cracked me up didn't know she was a dancer & singer too but Melissa really was the teen idol in those days from lhotp
No word of snark, I am genuinely fascinated by the distinctively 1970s/80s habit of taking something countercultural and flattening it for the mainstream. It’s still happening today, of course, but the way they did it back then is astounding to me.
Strange comment. What specifically are you claiming is “counter-cultural” about this musical theater song? It’s not like they were singing and dancing to a Parliament/Funkadelic song or a Beatnik poem.
According to Kasey Kasem of American Top 40...Baby Face was the most recorded song since Al Joelson..."every decade since, has had someone record the song to the 80's.

This is at once utterly delightful and extremely painful in that way only '70s variety shows are. I'm sure Ms. Gilbert is mortified by this clip, but at the same time, it does demonstrate that she was a decent enough hoofer. The singing, well ... she could dance.
