I wish there had been things like go pro cameras when I sailed Hobie's through the '90s. Lots of great times that live now only in my memory. Great video!
Thank! We're so lucky these days with the available Technology. Just 15 years ago I had the first 'action cam' called the Oregon which at the time we saw as a miracle, now the footage is unwatchable!
Can't thank you enough for posting this. Have the sound off, listening to Boz Scaggs "Lido." Used to do this ages ago. A spinal injury keeps me tied down right now - but until I'm completely and totally healed... THIS is SO great! thanks again.
I had an 18 and had a hard time finding others to sail out in the ocean with me. Then I bought a 17 which I truly loved. Fast single handed sailing with no pitch polling, just punched thru the waves. I had to give up because I had no where to store and when I did find a place some kids played on my mast and broke the comp tip. Last week I picked up a free 16 on Craigslist. No sails and a small punched hole in one hull. There are a few other issues, but hopefully, I can get this back on the water wih some work and TLC. If there is anyone who has an extra descent set of sails I can pick up at not too much money let me know. I need a few other parts to bring this one back to life. I hated seeing this boat disregarded. I wasn't even planning on getting another boat at that moment although I had been drooling every time I saw one sailing.
Brings memories. My girlfriends dad had a Hobie 16 in my teens. A boat following us clocked us at 2o MPH with two person crew. about 10 yrs ago or so I met that guy Suares who became Hobie International Champ on H16s in the Caribbean. Awesome video. Enjoyed it.
I had the lucky Chance do go out with Joe on the Hobie 16 a few days ago. Even we stayed slightly underneath the 23 kts - it was breathtaking and an unforgetable experience - everyone should put this kind of a speed-ride on his bucket list. Good Luck to all of You to have the chance to go out with Joe on a Joyride Three Thumps up - even if I have only two - and Joe... Good Luck breaking Your personal record -have fun gowing for it and share the results if possible ... looking forward to our next joyride!!!
definitely the fastest hobie 16 sailing i've seen so far on youtube. maybe the fastest ever, good job men. it takes nads to let the boat go that fast. a pitchpole at that speed would probably result in broken parts yours and the boat
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost my account password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Aries Gregory i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
wow!. I am new to sailing. I just did my first successful tack yesterday by learning the feel and learning how to gain speed before the tack. I am not ready for hobie 14 yet. wow!
Does the 14 even have a jib, the one I sailed in Mexico had no jib and no boom and it was actually much more difficult to turn than my Hobie 18 which I sail solo sometimes with no problem.
Back in the 70’s as a teenager I had a 14, and my next door neighbor had a 16, then an 18. We launched off the beach in Malibu, through the surf both directions, so much fun. Love ocean sailing Hobie cats!
Pounded my Hobie 16 hard back in the eighties and my mate Peter Treschman on jib failed to walk back keeping the driving hull from diving and we went in hard, and he got dunked like a tea bag. Good times! Thanks for the memories. Fun!
with the 16 I don't measure the pressure with a gauge (like we would on F18 or Tornado) I get the pressure by seeing how easy it is to sheet so that the blocks are touching. For more explanation check out this one - ua-cam.com/video/8D3Kv3ugPhY/v-deo.html
That's what I like about this; It's You, The Boat, and The Wind; It's like a "Tug o' war"; You're trying to get the most out of that boat... The feeling is so Great!!
Awesome run and great job not pitch poling! So I'm assuming that was 23.8kts? That is screaming fast. What year is the boat and any notable upgrades? It'd like to see a solo top speed run so I have something to aim for!
+Multi Hull Sailing Top speed on this run was 23.8 knots. The top speed that we've had is 24.8 - that was pretty crazy. Single handed the best i've done is 20.4 knots. We've upgraded our boats with the new EPO3 rudder blades which improve the control at high speeds. The boat in the video is from 2014.
Hey Joe, nice video, but no cigar. the wind is about 12-15 knots ( typical light wind for greece i guess). Back in the day, for heavy weather, e.g. the first World Championships with 25 knots and 25 foot swells out past Diamond head for the down wind leg, we would rake the mast back 6 inches so fully sheeted the boom was down on the traveller, then drill a big steel bolt in place of the stock mast rotate stops, so the mast would swing 80 degrees each way in place of stock 60 degrees and bend like shit in the big gusts, flatten the sail like a pancake, and stay upright, we would install foot loops at the aft end of hulls with righting line from same point for crew to hang onto. crew would be in skippers lap, with crews left foot on rudder case on starboard tack, and when the 25 knot gust came, the jib would not be sheeted at all to avoid pitch pole, tks for the memories! So my friend and I have sailed his Catalina 22 on a number of occasions and it's always been a good time. One day recently I mentioned that I always wanted to get a Hobie 16 and he says, "Hey, I've got one. Had it for years. It's been sitting under some trees for like 15 years. Want it?" I'm like, "hell yeah!" So I snatched it up for a mere $250. Actually he didn't want anything for it at all but I said, "Look, I'll get $300 from the ATM (maximum they'll give you in one day) and I'll take us both to lunch and you give you the rest. He agreed. So I've been restoring this amazing boat for a few months. It's an older model, from somewhere in the '70s so it's a classic. This weekend it finally goes in the water. I can't wait!! When I started I didn't know a trampoline from a trapeze but your videos are what made it possible and I totally appreciate you and your amazing videos!! Thank you! Dan
Excellent, I'm really glad that the videos have been helping. I'd call this a success story! It'd be great if you'd like to show the Joyrider TV global community the results on Show us your cat!
Joseph thanks for the great videos! I would like to see you do speed runs on a Supercat 20. Back in the 1980’s in San Diego I saw one with a triple trap setup plus a skipper- man was it fast!
How many miles off the beach do you sail for approximately. I seem to remember at cosmos windsurfing several years ago and the gybe round marker was some small building on the side of the mountain on the right side facing out, not certain how far that was actually though?
It's been a constant battle to keep clean. When it's not so hot the water seems to bead off no problem, more tricky when it's very hot and the salt sets on the lens. I use regular thumb swipes - seems to be the only thing that works. I got some Clarifi - which is meant to help. Results yet to come in.
Maybe dinghy sailors? From a few previous comments some thought the title of the video was misleading, although at the time there wasn't any evidence of anyone going faster.
So I have an old hobie 16 and I live among a bunch of small lakes. Would it be wise to just use the jib for leisurely sailing oe should I always go with both sails?

+Joseph “Joyrider TV” Bennett yeah, but if you are a lone sailor, with no help, then the 14 is better, right? thx

Fantastic Joseph and partner !! really nice !
HC 16: the most fun and exciting way to go sailing
Prindle 18 is MUCH more fun
I do slalom windsurfing, and tried nacra 17, 49er etc. All these are much more fast and fun than the HC16

Nice! I've never been anywhere near that fast in my 18... but the real question is: how do you keep your lens so clear?!

Incredible!
Sweeeeet!! That's the way to do it!!!!
So I have an old hobie 16 and I live among a bunch of small lakes. Would it be wise to just use the jib for leisurely sailing oe should I always go with both sails?
Always go with both sails - with just the jib you won't be able to say upwind.
Joseph Bennett that would definitely be a problem then. Thanks
What a ride!
+Dom Munro not arf! The guy crewing must have had balls of steel!
What kind of watch have you got to measure speed ?
I'm using a Timex Ironman Global Trainer watch which seems to be quite reliable.
Was the jib sail furling in a bit? If so, correcting that would yield more speed, wouldn’t it?
Yes, if the crew had been a bit more 'active' on the jib sheet we could have notched up a bit more speed. The reason it was flapping slightly was that it was better for it to be slightly loose than too tight.
Joseph Bennett
At that speed, that’s splitting atoms, trying to do too much might have resulted in an imbalance and a crash/dive.
where was this video shot? thanks.
+Jeremiah Jolliff this Hobie Sailing was in Vassiliki Bay on the Island of Lefkas in Greece. The boat was from Wildwind Sailing Holidays.
Well trimmed boat.

@@JoyriderTV Omg thanks for replying i am huge fan of your righting techniques
It's surprising the punishment Hobie 16s can take. Never wear out the sharp bottom edge of the assymetrical hulls.
Why don't they make them wider for more stability?
More modern boats are wider but the max generally is 2.6m so that the boat can still be pulled on the road.
Where's this filmed? Looks like vasiliki
It is Vassiliki.
