Personal Floatation Device ... Life vest even. Especially good when sailing a boat with a boom and you get bonked into unconsciousness by the boom on the way into the water 💧 🙌 👌 😀
Ive had a catalina 25 for 4 years and have fallen in love with sailing. I want to get a Hobie now. I think it'll be a blast and that I could learn about sailing from it as well.
sorry I'm back just got back from my sailmaker/repair people and he said it's WAY cheaper for me to send in my sails without battens get analysis and likely repairs, and windows installed, then drive up to pick them up (because the length of the battens I need increases the cost of shipping). just thought I'd throw that in there for anyone thinking about replacing old sails. another good one, joe!
Thanks for the video! I’ve just bought my uncle’s old windrush 14. Probably 35-40 years since I was last on her (my uncle driving not me) and I’ll need to learn all about it. 👍
good calm description, making a successful tack instead of getting into irons is nice, of course knowing how to sail a hobie a bit backwards is another skill to learn for a new sailor. (alumni of the 1992 Formosa Sailing Challenge series- fun times on boats/ Hobie 16)
boomless is absolutely a safer trend, but with the boom it was easy enough to hold the boom against the wind and back the boat up (sailing backwards) but many leave the jib cleated to the ?upwind? side to help push the bow over if momentum alone is insufficient, or the helmsman stopped the boat by throwing the helm hard over.@@JoyriderTV
Hi Joe, Do you teach Hobie cat sailing? My wife and I want to learn. We are already sailors but on bigger boats. We're looking for a vacation place to go to so we can learn Hobie cat sailing. Thanks - Mark
Hi Mark, check out wildwind.co.uk - it's a great place to learn cat sailing. I'm teaching sailing from the same place privately, for more info - totaljoyrider.com/pages/coaching
Hi there. I just got a hobiecat catamaran. Upon travelling a long distance home, I realized there was no boom with it. Do cat's have/ need a boom? I have seen some with one and others without one. Thanks.
Hi There, not all hobie cats need a boom. The Hobie 16 with the standard sail should have a boom, but if it's a 16 easy sail or a 15 then there's no boom required.

What is the minimum age you recommend to take a kid hobie sailing? (Assuming he knows how to swim?). I am a father of 5 year old. I am know how sail Hobies (C class), but I am not sure if it might be too much for a 5 year old.
As long as you feel in control of the boat, it's not too windy (sub 10 knots) and you have a life jacket for the child then I think that you're good to go. As long as it's warm enough too - you don't want to put your child off by it being too cold.
Thanks Joe, well sorted out especially with the other guy inserted for focus and topic clarity. I see the trolley wheel markings along the hull from your launch video. What to you find removes this the easiest? At the beginning of a season I use Muriatic acid with a solid rinse, but I wouldn't want to use that stuff so close to the water. Oxalic acid products don't really have much effect.

Important note....Joe is wearing a PFD despite the fact that there is pretty much a zero chance of capsizing. It's just a good habit to get used to.

For sure, always a good plan.
It should be automatic - going sailing? Put it on.
First off, most people go over board because they fall off, not a capsize. Second, that boat can absolutely capsize
Umm, that is Joseph Bennett on the helm, he won't fall off and he won't capsize the boat.

Good luck!! Thanks
Had a 10-minute lesson today (first time sailing) followed by my first solo. It was awesome!!! I want to do more!!!!
That is great. Good times ahead. Definitely stick with it!

Great video, thanks! Dodging the other boats is like the Asteroids video game.
Ha! Yes, thinking ahead and spacial awareness are very useful!
This is actually a really good tutorial!
Thanks!!
Taking the cat out tomorrow! Thanks for the videos and breakdowns Joe! Your teaching style sticks with me! So stoked to get the old girl moving again!
great stuff. I hope that it all goes well. I'm glad that the videos have been hitting the spot.
cheers

very cool! how well would this apply to a larger sailboat, an ocean going catamaran?
I think that's a great question that I'll answer in the Q+A on Friday

What do you have on for a life jacket? I've been looking for a low profile option, everything we have is so bulky lol
This is a Crewsaver Kite buoyancy aid

Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful.
Geometry looks like a prindle. Is that the difference from a15 to a 16?
Hobie 15:
more volume
skeg hulls = easier manoeuvring
smaller and less powerful
no boom
Why do you release the main sheet when you tack? Thanks.
I'll explain this in today's Q+A
@@JoyriderTV thanks. I’m not sure I know how to access the Q&A?

Are you turning backwards? Sailing school mistake.
Yes, if you mean, when tacking, facing the back.
Its kind of a hack when it come from the description of the parts and terms.
I'm not sure that I understand what you mean.
Could you rephrase?

Could you elaborate....
Why do you see these tipping over is that just poor techniques or inexperience
It would be in strong wind when the sail isn't eased enough in a gust.
