Very informative and enlightening video. I love how well thought out and complete you're build is, as well as your video. Thanks for you're contribution! It has real value!
@@Outside605 I did! And it’s dope! Thanks for the detailed walkthrough. Gonna see how these Midwest temps treat me before I cut a hole in the bed of my truck for the diesel heater turret, since I use my truck as a truck more than a camper.
Great video! Impressive build and you've inspired me to do the same. Would love to see a very detailed video on the electronic set up for those of us who don't have knowledge about putting something like that together.
Awesome camper build, very thought out and practical. Definitely will use many of your setup for my Tacoma build. Thanks for the great walkthrough and explanations. It would be awesome if you went into more detail around the electronics wiring etc. That's what I need to figure out and seems very daunting task wiring all that stuff up.
Thanks for the kind words and for watching. Would a video on basic 12v wiring be something people would be interested in? I’m open to doing it. I’m thinking along the lines of 12v battery, power disconnect, fuse block, wire splicing/termination, etc. Thoughts?
Something to consider is putting the bed on the passenger side. Then you can go as high as you want on the cabinet side without obstructing your rearward vision. I have a set up I built for a Project M camper that has the large windows on the sides. The buddy wanted a second bed single width. We did it on the passenger side. On the drivers side we have a TV and gaming console for his boy to mess around with and they can use the bed like a sofa to watch movies. I also built drawers under the bed for 48” with shelving in the front of the bed accessed from the middle of the camper. They have still tweaked it to fit their needs as they learn, but they are really glad they can see outside of the passenger window in the city. To each their own of course. I like this 2x2 build and they are strong enough for sure. I went the cabinet way so it’s all plywood and glue & pocket screws reinforcing the joints. Many different ways to build them. I got lazy for my personal camper and have a Rayzr that has a simple bed/dining set up with a kitchen, hot water and added my own wall AC unit. I have a F150 with the 2.0 kw Pro Power Onboard and that runs everything. Saves having to set up an elaborate wiring set up. The 100ah Lithium based set up in this build really is nice!!

You could add a $12 changeover switch to the battery input for your inverter, and run wire to your truck battery for the "B" connection of the changeover switch. That way, with no extra cost beyond the switch, wires and a fuse, you could turn on the truck, then flip the changeover switch, plug the 110V inverter output into your battery charger, and recharge your lithium battery off your truck's alternator at any time. Your electric power would be limited only by your gas tank at almost no additional build cost using the great set up you already have. That assumes your charger does not pull more than the 500W your inverter can handle, which is almost certainly the case. If you don't want to mess with the wire through the truck, you could do it externally with wire with jumper cable clips on one end.
That's something I have planned for a new video. I've taken a bit of a UA-cam hiatus to do some bucket list trips. I'll be filming again real soon. Thanks for watching.

It's a really "simple" good looking build. The electrical is very simple and clean, I really like that. Lots of good ideas, really like the different 12v quick connect plug ings.
Absolutely love this build!! I just finished the shell of my camper and was looking at ways to build out the interior and I really like what you did here. Question on the batter level display, do you find that it's accurate and is it effected by having a load on?
Awesome! Thank you! It's not completely accurate but it gives me a rough idea. It was better with my old AGM battery. With the lithium (even though it has a lithium setting) it's not as accurate.
Do you have a video on how you went about building that diesel heater pump silencer box?? At the very least, it'd be nice to hear it running to get an idea on how well it quiets the pump down. They can be quite annoyingly loud and tons of people try to figure out a solution…
If I had more free time, it's something I've thought about for sure. I've had several people send me emails asking about building one for them. Thanks for watching.
Working more than full time, I rarely have time to camp more than a couple days at a time. My 100ah lithium battery is more than enough power to get me through a weekend. If I ever get more time to travel, a solar setup would be ideal. Thanks for watching.
Love all your power source set up!!! Wish I could do this ... i have NO knowledge of where to begin, starting to get my Van ready, .... hopefully by end of Sept. You have a very Nice set up 😊
You can do it! Basic 12v wiring is pretty simple and there are some good references online. It gets a little more complicated when it comes to solar and big inverters but it's all doable. Make sure your wire size is appropriate for what you are doing.
Awesome set up. Very well thought out. I have a pop up camper and was wanting to build out a box on one side of my truck bed for storage, but also as an extra sleeping platform. This gave me some great ideas. I love the light and removable box, the 12v to SAE conversion and your wiring set up. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work! 👍👍
Nice upgrade I am working on a setup somewhat like yours Gave me a ton of thing to check out . My shell is 6" higher and I have a 8' Truck bed. ThNKS FOR THE INSITE.
You have a nice build and you built it for you to use. Awesome. 👍 As far as running lights, charging devices, inverter and running a fridge...You can run on an AGM battery. I ran all those items except I ran two fridges. I also had a microwave available for use on a 1500 watt inverter. But did not use it on this trip. I did a quick build in the back of my truck so I can attend the Overland Expo West 2022. I arrived Monday 05/16/2022 and left the following Monday morning 05/23/2022. Awesome time. good people, and an awesome event. All I have so far is a Redarc smart battery isolator (SBI) to charge the auxiliary battery from the alternator when the truck was running. While parked, I have a 160 watt, 18 volt solar panels w/charge controller. 12 volt, 100 Ah AGM battery. I did have a couple of mishaps, but they were operator error. Once fixed, I had no other issues. everything ran fine. However, while at the expo, I did purchase a Redarc dc to dc charger. Just got it today (5/27/2022). Will have it installed before my next trip out (before fathers day). With the Readarc charger (MPPT Charging), I can eliminate the solar charger (PWM charging). Wish I could show you my quick build out and set up. 😎 If you are going to run a large inverter, and your auxiliary battery can be charged from your alternator, I would recommend starting your vehicle while using the inverter. Also I would upgrade the Renogy Wanderer charge controller (PWM) to a MPPT charger. The PWM is an older technology, while the MPPT is newer and maybe better for your lipo battery. I'm not an expert, but I least look in to it.
Your first build was really good, but this one is great! I really like the additions! One question, is there a specific reason that you made your sleeping platform so tall? Most people have them just above the wheel well. Here’s a suggestion on powering your fridge, I wired mine to one of the switches so I don’t need to plug and unplug it, I just turn a switch on. You do have a couple spare switches front and back that you could hook up to. Thanks for the great video!
Andy, A generous, interesting update and build- Another example of real time field use and how it influences the utility / functionality & usability of space … clean Well done!! Thanks!
Thank you Love the detail in your work efficiency organization well thought thru. Looking forward to see it up close and personal so if your coming to TF let me know so I could come and check it and just visit again.
Bout time you came up with something!! HaHaHa, It turned out great. Although I thought the last build was good as well. Now lets get out there and do some camping and fishing!!
I love the setup so much I'm using it as a model for my own setup. You mentioned you made it so it was removeable, but how do you remove the heater? Do you have quick connects or the intake and exhaust? Or do you just work around it?
The heater is bolted to a turret plate that I bought off eBay. It's fairly quick to unbolt and remove the intake/exhaust pipes. Most times however, I just slide the box over the top of it and leave it. During the summer, I take the heater and fuel tank out so that's a non issue. Thanks for watching.
On the lithium, probably 3-4 days. In the middle of summer when it's extremely hot back there and the fridge is working constantly, a little less. I've had the fridge itself run for 5-6 days in cooler weather.
I try my best to seal it up before building. Unfortunately, dust gets in there still. I keep a small rechargeable hand vacuum with me and it makes getting rid of the dust a pretty easy task. Thanks for watching.
Nice improvements over the original build. Do you have any build video that you can share? I am curious about some of the placement of the 2x2's and the plywood overhang. Cheers!
I started to film the build but the weather never cooperated with my schedule. A lot of start and stop because of rain, wind, and snow. If there is something specific you're looking for, I can try my best to show or answer it. Thanks for watching!
All in, this is probably in the $6-700 range including the lithium battery. Take the battery out and use a cheaper lead battery and it would be around $500 to build yourself. Thanks for watching.
I watched both the new and old set up tours. Thanks for many ideas. Great work! Where can I learn about the electrical aspects and how to wire it up. Specifically about the routing and fuse box etc? Any response is appreciated. Thanks!
I plan to do a video on 12v wiring basics. I'm no expert and wont claim to be, but I've played with it enough to be confident in my work. Free time has not been friendly to me lately so as soon as I get a chance... Thanks for watching.
The short box does make things a little more interesting. I've seen some people make them work but it looks a little awkward if you're tall. I'm sure you can figure out a way to do it though. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I really like your build. Thought out very well. Can you tell me what size hinges you used? I'm thinking they are 4 inch? Also, in your first build video where did you get your fleece windows coverings? That's a great idea.
Great build! This will give me some inspiration for my build. How wide is your foam mattress? I was thinking of going 24” but I’m not sure if that will be wide enough.
Awesome build! I'm in the process of building out my camper shell and will definitely incorporate many of your ideas. Few questions if you don't mind answering: (1) You said you wanted to make the bed frame so it's easily removable. How do you easily move it out with all the wiring connections? Do you have a way to easily disconnect? (2) The diesel heater looks neat but how is the smell of diesel? I know nothing about how these work and was curious about the odor. Is it possible to list all the parts you used. I don't need the actual links, just a brief description and I can easily look them up. Thanks again for the video!!
Thanks for watching. The wiring is all contained inside the box. There are no connections to the truck itself. The battery should be removed first due to weight but that's really it. Diesel heaters really have no smell unless you spill during a fill up (this has happened) but overall they are a great device. Links to most of the parts are in my first build video. I carried over many of the components from that one.
Great detailed description of the electrical setup. I'm looking for ideas for a cross country road trip and I think you've pointed me in a great direction. Two questions, is it possible to tie you're battery into the truck to recharge it while driving and how do you vent the exhaust from the diesel heater?
Thanks for stopping by. You absolutely can charge the battery from the truck's alternator. The issue for me is I'm using a lithium battery. Typically lithium takes a different charger than lead or AGM batteries. I don't think it would play nice with the truck. If you used a lead battery, you would be fine. Lead batteries just don't last as long as lithium and they're much heavier. My 100ah lithium weighs about 20 lbs. A 100ah lead battery is 60+ lbs. The diesel heater exhaust is vented through the floor and out the back of the truck.
New sub, good video. Just scored a truck cap for $100. It does not match my truck, but I am already planning my build off of your videos. I really like your 2.0 box and will be very helpful in my build. I am an avid fisherman, and have 7.5’ rods to figure out how to get them in my 6.5’ bed. I don’t have a lockable rod box on my boat so my idea is either a slanted rack or hanging them from the cap ceiling.
I think that will work. I seldom shore fish so my gear always rides in the boat. When I do transport rods without the boat, I lay them on the passenger front floor and over the center console into the back seat. Even my 7' rods fit this way. Probably wouldn't work if the truck is full of gear though. Good luck on the build and thanks for the sub!
Great setup, I just run a hot from my truck battery and installed one of those on/off switches like you have turn it on while traveling it keeps both batteries charged and then I turn it off when camping so I don't drain from my truck.
Careful charging your Lithium from your alternator/ truck battery. You could burn out the alternator since the lithium has low resistance. Use a DC-DC charger that Renogy makes. This will limit the power at a safe level. Some of these DC-DC chargers will even sense when the truck is off and prevent draining the starter battery.
Love your rig ! Did you have to put "helper" leaf springs for the added weight ? For security, I've added the old style gate slide pins on the shell door and tailgate for additional security from the inside.
Thank you. On this truck, I didn't have helper springs. it never really squatted it. On my new truck and build, I added sumosprings to help with the added weight in a smaller truck. Thanks for watching.
Very slick build. The electronics are better than a lot of van builds. Well done.

A high bed allows for more gear storage underneath but sacrifices ability to sit up in bed. I use a folding chair alongside the bed for sitting.
Thanks for the kind words. The height was to accommodate more storage to stay better organized on trips. Thanks for watching.
Very neat 12v setup, i like how everything is framed. The noco battery chargers are great
Thank you! The charger has been great so far. Thanks for watching!
AMAZING!!! Well done.
Thanks for watching!
Very nice, starting my own soon, have solar in my travel trailer, putting second setup in the Tacoma soon.
Good luck on the Tacoma build and thanks for watching!
The SAE connectors are sound advice. Now I just wish my slices weren't always falling apart too.
They work well for that purpose. Thanks for watching 👌
Andy,
A generous, interesting update and build-
Another example of real time field use and how it influences the utility / functionality & usability of space
… clean
Well done!!
Thanks!
Many thanks!
Excellent work and design. Would you mind telling me the dimensions of your bed frame ? I would like to make mine like yours. Thank you, and congrats.
Roughly 28"w, 74"l and 17" tall.
Sweet setup Andy. Enjoy watching the video's!!
Thanks 👍
Very nice! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Very nice and super clean setup 👌 great job
Thanks! 👍
@@Outside605 Your Welcome!
nice job guy :)
Awesome job! Would love to see links for all of the products that you used as they were all awesome.
Great idea!!
Beautiful setup
Thanks!
Very nice setup
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Love the detail in your work efficiency organization well thought thru. Looking forward to see it up close and personal so if your coming to TF let me know so I could come and check it and just visit again.
Thanks Michael. Maybe sometime we'll cross paths around Salmon Falls.
Bout time you came up with something!! HaHaHa, It turned out great. Although I thought the last build was good as well. Now lets get out there and do some camping and fishing!!
Once our weather finally straightens out. We've had terrible rain, wind, and snow almost every weekend all spring. Soon it will be game on!
Everything is fused except the main wire going into the switch. Yes your loads are fused, but your supply is not. A fusible link would be a good idea.
Thanks for watching. There is a breaker on the battery leading to the fuse panel. When I film, I'm pretty good about forgetting to mention things.
Great job. Fine tuned version one for version 2 !
Thanks!
Watched both of your videos on this. Really nice setup
Awesome, thank you!
Very nice build
Thanks!
Great work Andy 👍
Thanks 👍
Great build. simple and efficient. Thank you for the ideas.
Thank you!
Love it. Watching from Arizona.
Awesome! Thank you!
Ide be interested to know how you connected the noco to the inlet plug that goes to the generator? Excellent rebuild
Just like plugging in an extension cord. Male to female. Thanks for the kind words and for watching.
Awesome build, how many days can you run the battery/frig/heater/electronics before needing to recharge the battery?
On the lithium, probably 3-4 days. In the middle of summer when it's extremely hot back there and the fridge is working constantly, a little less. I've had the fridge itself run for 5-6 days in cooler weather.
Greta video, do you have a schematic for the wiring and also, do you have links to any of the products.
I plan to do a video for both really soon. Thanks for watching!
Well thought out!! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Love the set up and idea of these! Do you have a lot of dust come in from driving down the Forest Service Roads when it's dry?
Wow, you gave me so many good ideas! Thanks and just subscribed!

Awesome! Thank you!
I like your style and logic. Subscribed!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Wow, this is awesome. How much would it cost for you to make one of these of someone else?
Thanks for watching.
i wish i didnt have a short bed so i could enjoy that setup! i have to sleep diagonally
I bought the material at a typical fabric store. It came in a large piece that I cut to size. I believe the hinges are 4" indeed. Thanks for watching.
Great build! This will give me some inspiration for my build. How wide is your foam mattress? I was thinking of going 24” but I’m not sure if that will be wide enough.
I think mine is about 24" I will have to double check.
Thanks for watching!
can you please put a link for everything you got off of Amazon? That setup is awesome!!!
I'll try to get something like that up. Thanks again.
Nice job!
Thanks for watching!
This is awesome! We need some links to all the products!
I’ll work on that. Thanks for watching!!
Great video
Thanks for the visit!
Perfect
Great build but what did you do about the exhaust from your diesel heater
It's vented through the floor and out the back.
Awesome video!!
Thanks!
Great setup, I just run a hot from my truck battery and installed one of those on/off switches like you have turn it on while traveling it keeps both batteries charged and then I turn it off when camping so I don't drain from my truck.
Great idea. I've thought about that but not sure if it would safely charge a lithium battery. I'll look further into it.
Thanks for watching!
@@Outside605 lithium I don't know about now.
Lithium definitely has an advantage for a build but there are a few quirks that throw a wrench in things.
Could add links to all your items and where you purchased them.
If you look at my newest build video - it has links to everything listed here and more. Thanks for watching.
