  • We decided to test out if we could sustain our ICECO JP40 cooler off of a Jackery Explorer 300 portable power station plus one 100W Solar Saga solar panel. Would the Jackery Explorer 300 have enough in reserves to power the cooler overnight and then recharge enough during the day to do it all over again.

Exactly what I wanted to know. I bought a bodega 12v 35 quart fridge/freezer that has an additional lithium battery that can run for 10-12 hrs if there isn't good sun for the day. Can always use the 12v adapter and plug it into the car/truck in an emergency as well. This is a great solution for short and long trips and everything in between.

That was an awesome test! I just recently purchased a Jackery 300 and 100W solar panel. It is nice to see what type of load it can sustain over time. The nice part is that that cooler drops off to 0 pull from time to time and only needs to kick in to maintain temp. And it looked like you were running MAX for a while.

I have a nuCamp T@G with a Renogy 100W solar system charging the battery (along with shore power if available). Just finished my first year using it. And learning to hate use of a cooler for a week's outing. Bought a JP40! Now figuring out how use of the JP40 affects use of the 12VDC system. It's been a learning curve! Decided to buy an ECOFLOW River 2 Pro power station and 160W panels to supplement use of this fridge when I'm at BLM campgrounds in northern Wisconsin that have no shore power. This is the second excellent YT video that shows testing of the JP40 with a solar-charged power station. Thank you!

I have a 20 liter 12v fridge I keep in my Jeep, and run it off of a EVO River. I have found I can get about 36 hours of power just with the unit alone. While I can run it straight off of the car battery for several hours, using the EVO and re-charging it from the alternator works well. A 30 minute drive will put back about 25% of the battery's storage. Solar works if you're sitting still, but when camping or traveling, using your car's alternator as a power source is a reliable way to keep your battery pack charged. I ran a separate line off of the fuse block to handle the current. Since many vacations involve short daily trips to the beach or where ever, you can use the extra electrical energy your alternator makes.

Absolutely amazing that baby Jackary is keeping up with the solar input when comparing to the output. One assumes the fridge compressor isn't running all the time which is cool. It really says something about that power bank. It would be interesting to see how long a larger 500 or 1000, not that everybody has access to the larger more expensive unit, but still the run times would be much longer even without solar.
    Really cool review.

I have a budget but still very good powerstation with about 1200wh from Amazon, i leave it in the car to power my 50l 12v compressor fridge, without recharging i get about 4-7 days if i put the fridge in eco mode and 3-5 days in max mode, it depends on the ambient temperature inside the car. I also have plugged in the powerstation to a 12v car outlet and a 100watt pd charger, so i get about 170-195 watts of charging while driving, 30 minutes of driving the car per day and i can run this thing forever 👍😎👌

With this kinda test it's about math. This 12v fridge and most of them draws a max of 45w when the compressor is running and pretty much 0w when it isn't(LED draws so little it fails to register even 1w sometimes). I have one of these fridges and it only turns on once at most once very hour for 5 about minutes(temp is 2C or 35F). So it's actually on for about 70mins in 24hrs at 45w. That's very little usage.
The solar is rated at 100w but even in the best conditions there's so going to be some efficiency lost and gotta take into consideration of other variables like temperature and clouds. On sunny days you're probably averaging 75W for at least 8hrs and 40w or less on cloudy days. As long as the battery can power the fridge overnight you can pretty much power the fridge indefinitely off of a 100w solar panel.
Fridge is on for 70mins/24hrs @ 45w vs solar charging and using non-optimal conditions here just to prove a point, 8hrs/24hrs @ 40w.
Good test. Even though I already knew the outcome because of the math, it's nice to see it put into actual practice.

Is it ok to run the Jackery below 50%? Also, I’m glad you tested with a warm cooler, but wouldn’t it work real time camping to start with a cooler already at the temperature you want with cold food inside?
I recently bought another brand cooler and am planning to wrap it in insulation, except for the vents. I put a thermometer inside and I had to really reduce the desired temperature on the display to force it to get to a safe temperature. I don’t know if I would ever have gotten it down to be able to freeze (freezer/cooler). I’ve been looking into the Jackery products and would want to go with the 1000. My sister used her 1000 when she recently lost power in here home. I was thinking to use the unit to power a tiny heater in my horse trailer bedroom rather than the dangerous alternative of propane heaters. Some people object if you run a gas generator all night, lol. So this test was great and gave me a lot to think about.

I'd say with just one panel, probably not from what I see, but if you had two (even a 60 watt + 100 watt) you might be fine and actaully be able to keep it running for multiple days, providing they were sunny days. I'll probably get a 100 watt panel for my 300 at some point for stuff like this.
Did the cooler shut off at 3:43? It shows 0 watts output, so either the cooler shut off because it's been at 37 degrees or the Jackery disconnected (turned off) the 12V power maybe?
But it is good to know that the 300 can run a small cooler if you have a 100 watt solar panel and sunny days.

@@jonteresasepicadventures7341 Thanks. later into the video and after I commented I heard you say your set was about 37. It is going on Day 3 and I have no notice that ICECO has sent the unit. I’ll be patient… quality is worth waiting for. I may be able to get a solar gen set later but now have group 27 sealed interstate and will test like everyone does. 😄. Thanks again for the info and nice power test.

I'm assuming that if you had the fridge pre-chilled with pre-chilled drinks and food, and THEN plugged in the Jackery and panel, you would be laughing!!!

So!!! Every day I could cook myself a steak, keep my cooler freg at 37 all the while keeping my battery/Jackery up to speed. Wonder how much better the Jackery 1000 or 3000 would be... Im thinking house freg/freezer coffee maker and small cooking plate. Do that test!!! lol.. Thanks for the effort. I think i saw a small attachable sun location indicator that give you the right angle so the kids could adjust while your out hunting meat during the coming world apocalypse. (kidding, well lets hope not)

Good test for adults, but I've camped with the 500w Jackery in Summer temperatures, and the kids really throw a wrench in the analysis. Every time the cooler is opened the compressor starts. After 3 days I had zero power.

You are doing nothing more than running it off of the battery in the jackery. The panel then charges the battery.

well, yeah that is what a solar generator does.

@@UTVGuide101 That's what I keep telling people. These things are nothing more than a battery with a built in dc to ac power inverter. The only difference between this and my solar setup is this is portable. My solar set can charge much faster though since these are limited to the amount of solar panels that can be used on them. For the price of one of these a person could have a nice small solar set.

What did it cost you for that whole rig? About $1,500? That's an awful lot of money to keep a few six packs of beer cold. Nice to have, but the economics are not in your favor. Like a $50,000 car when you only have 5,000 bucks, cooling your beer in this way is for the rich only. Get real.

Jackery website has both for $600. Still not cheap. But if you consider you don't have to buy ice and you have no wasted food due to sitting in water, overtime it might make sense. Also if you plan to be in the back country there are no 7-11's to get ice. To me that is the real value. But to each his own.
