Hello come to Miami Florida my friend 🌴. I hear so many people having to stop riding because it's winter. That sucks. Anyhow, I got a pre-owned 2015 Yamaha V Star 950. But the previous owner gave it to me with a battery that's on its last leg. When I purchased it from him, it was on a trickle charger. I've only had a bike for 3 days, and last night, I took it out to get some gas. And it started fine but today this morning, a beautiful day to ride, it did not start. My neighbor, who has four motorcycles came over, and he tried to jump start it. But it was weird because he tried to jump start it using the trickle connector that is already there, that is connected to the motorcycle battery. Meaning that he did not have to open the battery compartment. I've never seen anyone try to jump start it by connecting it to a trickle charger output cable. Do you think maybe this is why it did not jump start? Anyhow, I'm getting my new battery tonight from amazon. Do you have a video that shows exactly how to take out the battery and replace a new battery? When I took off the seat to look at the battery, there's so many different cables going to the terminals. Because this guy had LED show lights, a custom horn, an LED headlight. Ayy yaa yaaii. Thanks!
if you are not competent with doing the electricals. Best to take the bike & new battery to an motorcycle shop. Take a photo of all the existing connections on the -ve & +ve terminals. And make sure the mechanic puts them back correctly to the new battery.
you are absolutely right from a cautionary point of view. I shall have to remind myself to disconnect -ve first in future. But i was careful not accidentally touch any metal chassis part with a tool, & the +ve Terminal. Good reminder.. thank you.
When disconnecting the cables from the old battery, disconnect the negative first, then the positive Connect the new battery in the reverse order, positive then negative." When you are replacing your battery, Ilt isn't always easy to remember the order in which to disconnect and reconnect the terminals.
Hi My bike has been sitting since earlier this year and when i tried to start it, it was completely dead. I jump started it few times. The bike started but kept getting off after few seconds. Also, the odo needlebwas going crazy while it was turned on. It kept going up and down. Do you recommend taking out the battery and charging it first? Thanks
There is no need to take battery out of bike before charging. Use a proper battery trickle-charger, & let it charge for at least 24hrs before starting the bike. From the symptoms you described, it sounds like either the battery is fully-dead (even after charging because it cannot maintain a load- current draw); and/or also the fuel-line is blocked or dirty. Best thing to do is, if you can get a battery load-tester (not just a multimeter), do a load-test of the bike battery immediately after it has full 24hs of charging. Do not use it to start bike yet. My video shows how I used a load-tester to check health of battery. Sometimes the health is so bad, that it cannot store a charge even after 24hrs of charging. That would mean a new battery is needed.
Excellent video, thank you sir!
you are most welcome
Thx! Just bought a similar bike, and need to change the battery!
U R welcome. Glad it helped.

I'm surprised that you removed the positive cable first. You should always disconnect the ground cable first and install it last.
