To protect from stray shots from allies. Phantoms could pop out from nowhere so they could suddenly be in the line of fire requiring their allies to shoot in their general direction to save them from the soul sucking monsters. Is your question because it's not like one of the games you have played or a general question because you honestly don't know? There have been several Final Fantasy animated movies since the 1990's and only one bore any resemblance to one of the games. This is completely par for the course for one of those movies. I decided on that because I've always been artistic, and when I first saw the CG cutscenes in Final Fantasy 7, I decided "THAT is what I want to do! I want to go into animation!!" So fast forward to 2001, and I'm just learning animation, and this movie came out, so it was very fitting that I go see it. After the movie, I remember thinking "Wow! This was something special! This will either inspire other animators about how amazing their work can become, or it will discourage them that they could never make CGI as good as this." Funny how just a few years later, we got real-time video games that were just as good if not better in terms of visuals and realism than this, and how our CGI has far surpassed this movie, making the movie look very dated in comparison. And, as much as the plot of this movie didn't make sense, and that it looks crude compared to today's standards, it still holds a special place in my heart for how amazed I was sitting in that theater. So hate all you want on this, I still say it's a decent and entertaining movie, and it really pushed the envelope for full-length CGI movies for the time. Remember this was back in 2001!!
Suhkma Dheek Yeah, definitely the old doctor looks much more realistic. That's mainly due to when in CG you make things look old, wrinkled, flawed, they look more realistic.

You missed the biggest one. Humans have easy ubiquitous orbital travel, but no one ever thought of just abandoning the surface of the planet and fucking off into space.
It's crazy how beautiful this movie still is considering it's 15 years old. It was SO well done! That said, I really liked this movie, yeah it's weird and kookie but I still love it! I didn't like Advent Children near as much.. I think that was marketed entirely to people who have played final fantasy 7, which I have not, so I don't have nostalgia to make that movie better. Also RE: This doesn't resemble any of the games -- the genius of the final fantasy franchise is that it doesn't really have to. Final Fantasy means more "Fantasy genre game with a long amazingly written story" more than a specific thing, as each game is totally disconnected from every other game, and it still works.. that's why they're able to release so many lol
This actually resembles FF7 in several ways. Both feature the concept of a living planet, both have an alien threat that crashes into the planet causing a crater, and both have militaristic antagonists that fire super weapons on said craters.

This is definitely one of the most technically impressive films of its time. A shame it flopped. Just for reference, when the film was in development, they were using SGI workstations and servers for CGI development and rendering because competing hardware wasn't powerful enough. As ubiquitous as nVidia is as a graphics namesake nowadays, it hadn't even released consumer graphics adapters at the time.
Many Final Fantasy "fans": *THIS IS NOTHING TO DO WITH FINAL FANTASY! IT'S A DISGRACE TO THE NAME!* Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within: Written and directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the literal creator of Final Fantasy.
For those who didn't get it, the end of the movie is the ghost of the other planet being brought back to life and returning to space. That's what the beam was.
I like it. Although I wish people wouldn't shit on this movie so much. This wasn't some blatant cash grab like TMNT or Robocop 2014. There was so much love and hard work that went into films like this and the story was so original and interesting. They pushed the boundaries of what was possible and for that alone they should be commended. Plus it was probably better in it's original Japanese. Dubbing was still shit even back then.
Yea, i watched this movie once and I didnt care for it at all. Advent Children is the better movie (but so confusing. I found the special edition which included more scenes and it explained things a little better).
Loved this film, don't understand why you think it had no story. Thought it built an excellent world, with ghosts an marines in exo-suits falling into green goo. Spooked me out when I was younger first watching it in the cinema. Another good EWW!
For your information this movie is been made WITHOUT any help of motion capture... so I find the graphics much more impressive even today. But I agree to say that the scenario is pure shit.
Dude, i was just a kid when i saw it, and i've been searching everywhere for it. I was actually thinking that this movie didn't even exist. I just had the faintest dream like memories of it... i think i was 4 when i first saw this movie
I honestly bet if they had just called the Movie Spirits Within(Maybe with a ": Final Fantasy" chaser subtitle) it wouldn't have had the severe a backlash it did, but then again, Nerds are dangerous when attacking enzerg.
It's a story about searching the world for the sacred elements to seal off the dark forces threatening the world... That's pretty og ff. That or Zelda.
@@siresorb1419 That could go for literally any series. It's just cheap when a series turns into something it's not, strays from what people know it for, and just say it's for the sake of the story. cheap move, cheap movie plot.
Movies you should sin (If you have already sinned one of them, My Apologies -Wreck It Ralph -Shrek -Puss N Boots(Dreamworks) -Rise of The Guardians (Dreamworks) -Batman vs Superman -Men In Black Trilogy -Suicide Squad -Turbo (The snail racing one)
I remember watching this at the cinema, and pretty much ignoring the storyline. It played like one long tech demo and the graphics were amazing for the time. Slag the movie off all you want, but it's thanks to experience in making films like this that we now have the Final Fantasy VII remake, and - more importantly - Tifa Bunga Bunga videos in the Italian Senate.
What is Final Fantasy exactly? Every single game is set in a different universe than the next. The only thing that carries over from each game are summons, the chocoboes and flying airships
Not true, lots of games share the same universe or planet just hundreds of years apart, or not that many years apart (XII is set in Tactics world). This movie had LOTS of different existing universes, yet they chose to create a new one, so the people who played the games feel alienated.
Don Tuerto Well ok, some of their games is set in the same universe, but by enlarge when they create a new final fantasy it's a new universe. This movie was never meant for the people playing the games. It was meant as a movie for the western audience made by the same people who made Final Fantasy. Their next movie was made exclusively for the people who had been playing their games, and thus came out as a glorified fanservice (not in the "we show underwear" type of fanservice, but as in they only made it for the people whining about wanting to see more of ff7)
Final Fantasy XIII proved that Square Enix only really wants to make movies anyway, the problem is that they're not that great at it. I didn't think this movie was terrible, but you do have to pretty much just ignore the plot holes and take it all for granted, which is a sound strategy with a lot of Final Fantasy games too so in that respect it's most definitely part of the series ;)
Ace in the Hole the thing about that is... the games have no consistency between them except the title aaaand Cid. That’s literally all it takes to be final fantasy, have the title and a character named Cid.
All those years passed and I'm still sore that this is a sci-fi movie about alien ghosts... Based on a video-game series set on MEDIEVAL TIMES WITH MAGIC AND SWORDS HOW IN THE HELL DID THEY MADE THIS TRANSITION?!
I actually liked FF:tSW... A little bit, anyway. I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything but it definitely had a strong Final Fantasy vibe. There's only so much you can do with a Final Fantasy vibe when you take a series known for 100+ hour campaigns and shrink it down to a 1.5 hour movie, though. I think it worked pretty well within the scope they had to work with.
I disagree. It was terrible because they took a winning concept and then tried to normalize it by making a normal movie. Shaved off all the lore, and just used the most common names. Not to mention none of the music is like the games, but replaced with movie music. You could just grab the cutscenes from FF9 or something and it would make a better movie.
No, there is definitely lore. Everyone can relate to Bahamut, Chocobos, Moogles, Behemoths, Tonberries, Bombs, Malboros and more. They may not be in every game, but they are in most. I certainly wouldn't consider a game without these things Final Fantasy.
That's not lore. Those are just common elements. Some of those elements aren't even the same between games and not all games use those elements. The movie had no obligation to shoehorn them in.
Did anyone ever ask why the soldiers wear complex, bulky, heavy, presumably expensive, armor when the phantoms pass through with no effort at all?
To protect from stray shots from allies. Phantoms could pop out from nowhere so they could suddenly be in the line of fire requiring their allies to shoot in their general direction to save them from the soul sucking monsters. It is better than nothing and getting shot like what happens to the guy at 11:00 when he got it by stray fire aimed at a Phantom.

Not going to lie, I greatly enjoyed this movie when I was younger, still do.
Its not bad, but is not "final fantasy", just other fantasy. hehe
Yeah, doesn't look AS BAD as I'd have expected from a pre-2015 vidjima game film.
well, you were an idiot as a kid
I don't care what anyone says. This is still one of the best sci-fi films ever made.
~ Max Caulfield.💫
Am with you on that one, truly uniwue albeit not FF but who cares. The director dedicated it to his mom whom passed away which is also sweet
"I don’t care what anybody says, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within is one of the best sci-fi films ever made."
Oh yeah, that was from Life is Strange. Lol
is that guy Raif Adler
LOL
Yep. Lol
Rafe Adler isn't in this
yup
This is definitely one of the most technically impressive films of its time. A shame it flopped. Just for reference, when the film was in development, they were using SGI workstations and servers for CGI development and rendering because competing hardware wasn't powerful enough. As ubiquitous as nVidia is as a graphics namesake nowadays, it hadn't even released consumer graphics adapters at the time.
Many Final Fantasy "fans": *THIS IS NOTHING TO DO WITH FINAL FANTASY! IT'S A DISGRACE TO THE NAME!*
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within: Written and directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the literal creator of Final Fantasy.
Only Jeremy can complain about too much exposition AND not knowing what's going on.
Im gonna go check to see if you guys did advent children
Nope.
Do Freddy Got Fingered!!!!
Anthony Nunez
im good
totally thinking that too
They probably never will since it's not considered a real movie.
'Cause, y'know, it was made by the actual video game people.
I don't care what anybody says, that's one of the best sci-fi films ever made.
"No one has ever said that. Ever."
I remember watching this with my dad a few times as a kid. We had it on a vhs tape. I actually remembered it quite fondly.
VHS was still around in 2001?!
@@Justforvisit hell yeah it was. Crazy to think about
For those who didn't get it, the end of the movie is the ghost of the other planet being brought back to life and returning to space. That's what the beam was.
... that's dumb as shit. I appreciate the explanation (and it kinda makes sense in this turdpile), but that's just all sorts of stupid
HOW CAN YOU NOT SIN THE EASTER EGG THRILLER DANCE / OUTTAKES?!
For a minute there i thought this turned into Gaming sins.
I LOVE THE ANGEL DEVIL BIT WHEN U DRAW ON THEM I COULDNT STOP LAUGHING AT HOW BLUE AND RED LMAO
Of all the videos you have made, how is this one not an hour long?
Every time i hear the villain talk, all i hear is Hades. And i can't take it seriously XD
Archer Bennington me too
Sorry, but... I have never watched this movie, and what does this have to do with Final Fantasy?
exactly.
name gaia is only thing
Nothing, at that was its biggest problem.
Yea, i watched this movie once and I didnt care for it at all. Advent Children is the better movie (but so confusing. I found the special edition which included more scenes and it explained things a little better).
DudeHunder
Oh wow.
I remember watching this as a kid.. this brings back so many memories
Was amazing CGI for its time though.I must have watched this movie a dozen times. Granted I was younger, but now I wanna re watch it!!
So are you going to do Advent Children next?
Loved this film, don't understand why you think it had no story. Thought it built an excellent world, with ghosts an marines in exo-suits falling into green goo. Spooked me out when I was younger first watching it in the cinema. Another good EWW!
I give a Freakin Trillion Sin for adding Final Fantasy on this Freakin Movie
And Another Trillion Sin for this movie exist and tarnished Final Fantasy
Everything wrong with Zootopia!!!!
Everything.
+TechNomad zootopia was good
+K Waykins they also do good films
Yeeeeeeeeeeees everything wrong with zootopia, or as it is known as in the UK (where I come from) zootropolis
+Robert Curley so y isnt Metropolis called Metropia
4:36 - 4:39 : Is it me or is he completely hammered ?
To be fair, that CG is actually pretty great for 2001. Though I still do not buy Steve Buscemi as looking like that.
The UA-camrs sin call almost made me spit my drink! Well done CS, well done indeed!
UA-camrs have no souls/spirits...
Do...do you not understands the point of the channel?
@@thatguyintherain3168 Yo leave my stupid comment alone lol. And yes try understanding jokes
Do Everything Wrong With Atlantis The Lost Empire next, it would actually be really cool
A Final Fantasy movie without any chocobos.
Ding!
And barely any fantasy.
Whenever I see the phantoms war scene, the "points of authority" music video pops in my head.
I'm a huge final fantasy nerd and I didn't even know this existed. . . how? and more importantly why? why is this a thing?
For your information this movie is been made WITHOUT any help of motion capture... so I find the graphics much more impressive even today. But I agree to say that the scenario is pure shit.
Same reason why they made a Warcraft movie lol. I personally liked this movie but that's just me.
Dude, i was just a kid when i saw it, and i've been searching everywhere for
it. I was actually thinking that this movie didn't even exist. I just had the faintest dream like memories of it... i think i was 4 when i first saw this movie
i'm also realising that in 2001 people were applauding Pixar for their animation. but this is really good for 2001
How did you not know it? Well it totally flopped at the box office because western audiences aren't used to mature animated movies
I honestly bet if they had just called the Movie Spirits Within(Maybe with a ": Final Fantasy" chaser subtitle) it wouldn't have had the severe a backlash it did, but then again, Nerds are dangerous when attacking enzerg.
That moment when Uncharted 4 looks better then the CGI-dream- movie of my childhood.
This movie is what... 2001? Unchattd 2016
Yeah, sick how the time flies.
When I first saw this movie I was blown away by the graphics. Never seen anything like it at the time and I enjoyed the movie tbh
Movie makes Squaresoft go bankrupt, force it to merge with Enix, and stop making good games *add 1.000.000 sins
That's 100 sins for each hair on Aki's head!
May you please review Everything Wrong With Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, thank you.
Square must have been on crack when they made this movie and decided to call it Final Fantasy
It's a story about searching the world for the sacred elements to seal off the dark forces threatening the world... That's pretty og ff. That or Zelda.
yeah that was a dumb decision
@@siresorb1419 That could go for literally any series. It's just cheap when a series turns into something it's not, strays from what people know it for, and just say it's for the sake of the story. cheap move, cheap movie plot.
There is never not a Final Fantasy movie or game without someone named Sid/Cid.
Everything Wrong With Sharknado
Theres nothing wrong with Sharknado : D
Honestly Sharknado is exactly what it wants to be. It's just that what it wants to be is a terrible movie.
Everything wrong in sharknado is everything that is right in sharknado
That wouldn't be "in X minutes or less", more like an episode of MST3k.
2 years too late but I think it’d break the sin counter... again...
Movies you should sin (If you have already sinned one of them, My Apologies
-Wreck It Ralph
-Shrek
-Puss N Boots(Dreamworks)
-Rise of The Guardians (Dreamworks)
-Batman vs Superman
-Men In Black Trilogy
-Suicide Squad
-Turbo (The snail racing one)
Suicide squad didn't come out yet...
I'm pretty sure he's done Wreck it Ralph and I know he's done at least MI3. But other than that I agree.
Oh my god you used to wrong "its" in the description fix it now before I have a stroke.
That was a run-on sentence, and now I will give you this: the*
:0
I can only feel contempt for myself now. Burn me at the stake.
I'm just commenting to let you know that they still haven't changed it
and you used the word "to" instead of "the".
Here is the main reason whats wrong with this movie. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FINAL FANTASY!!!
And what has to do the story of ff7 and the story of ... ff8 or any other ffs ? :)
Do FF7 advent children!
7:32 source material doesn't matter! Sin the Cinemasins! I demand retribution
No, if you call it "Final Fantasy" and it basically HAS to at least resemble something the you'd see in an FF game.
Ace in the Hole the thing about that is... the games have no consistency between them except the title aaaand Cid. That’s literally all it takes to be final fantasy, have the title and a character named Cid.
Brandon Francis Plus moogles And/or chocobos
You TOTALLY miss the mark! I think Spirits Within is a movie so ahead of its time, and I love it.
Do United Passions. Would beat your record probably.
Infinity?
+Liam Cook CinemaSins already reached infinity
+Team Plasma Colress what movie was that again?
+Daniel Townsend here for replies.
I've heard so much people talking shit about this movie. Now I can understand why without having to waste hours of my life
Everything wrong with Shrek...
Just do it already!!!
I'm actually gonna Sin CinemaSins for their Misspelling of, "Cid," as, "Sid," in their Captions for this Video, lol. XD
I fucking love Final Fantasy, but that movie was a Sin.
apparently nobody told cinema sins that this movie has acutally nothing to do with the games
Then don't use the name...
It has a Cid. That's enough.
Cirac1
then the epic castillian poem "The Poem of the Cid" is also FF...*sigh*
I actually still really like this movie, although Advent Children was better.
All those years passed and I'm still sore that this is a sci-fi movie about alien ghosts... Based on a video-game series set on MEDIEVAL TIMES WITH MAGIC AND SWORDS HOW IN THE HELL DID THEY MADE THIS TRANSITION?!
Maybe they thought fantasy would be boring to Western audiences. Then Lord of the Rings launched a few months later and blew the fuck up. Whoops
Each game is it's own story (aside from the few sequels). There really is no lore to speak of. They started with a clean slate.
