Installing a Shallow Well Irrigation Pump

- We are installing an irrigation pump to a shallow well. This well is about 25 feet deep and currently uses a pitcher pump but a sprinkler is needed for the garden. I have had many people ask me about installing this type of pump to their shallow well for irrigation purposes. Well, here we go.
The pump that we are installing is a Lanchez 1 HP shallow well pump that was offered for review. The offer came at a very convenient time since my brother-in-law was looking at pumps to use for his garden. This pump has a draw depth of 26 feet, a headroom of 147 feet, capable of 1294 gph running 9.5 amps at 115 volts. It also boasts 65 psi so it can really push that water out. We found it very easy to install and use, and we were surprised at how quietly it operated.
This type of pump is a continuous duty pump meaning that it must run all of the time to produce water. If you need a system that uses pressure to turn the pump off and on it is simple enough to add a pressure switch and tank. As is, you can leave this pump installed for permanent duty but remember that the flow must be controlled by the power switch and not an inline spigot or valve.
Remember, the way you set this up is based on your needs. You can use rigid pipe instead of hose. You could use angled fittings. You may even want to adapt your casing pipe to allow for your hand pump and electric pump to be connected at the same time.
The pump comes with 1" NPT inlet/outlet so to complete the installation you will at least need two 1"NPT to garden hose adapters. Below is a list of everything we used here.

You can also use on demand pump that has a pressure switch and when the pressure goes down it comes on.
Hi, Just have a question is it possible if the motor is far from the source of water? 300 meters away from the shallow water because there's no electricity there.

would you recommend some type of pre pump filter? Just to clean any debris from passing through. Great video guys! thanks
The end of the hose has a large debris filter. You could try adding additional filtration but you run into the chance that the restricted flow is too much for the pump to overcome.
How do I fix this pump? Motor seems good but marked decrease in suction in 1 day . . .
A few things I would check first. Make sure your pump isn’t outperforming your well’s replenishment rate. Check that the pump hasn’t sucked something up (sediment, sand, clay, obstruction) that is limiting its performance. Make sure all fittings are air tight. Even the smallest leak will be a huge effect on performance.
I found out problem. Old hose on Intake. Poor Seal. New Hose and Plumber Tape. I took it apart twice. Damn lotta work to find out what was wrong and how to open it without breaking it. It's drying now for storage. The concern was leaves or debris inside case. None found. Just poor hose seal. Thanks@@TigerCreekFarm
Hi, when you are priming are you filling the hose from pump to water with water so there is no air between source and pump? Just clarifying how this process works, thank you!
Correct. Prevents unnecessary strain on the pump motor.

Do they make a pump that you could pump water from a in ground well as you need it, such as watering a garden, etc. ?

also how do know when the well is running dry? I assume that the pump can pump faster than the will fills?
You can’t ever assume that any shallow well that is put down will produce unlimited water. It’s always good to check and determine the flow rate of your well. I have a video on this if you’re interested.

If you have a check valve in place you should not need to.

How many sprinklers can this pump handle?
I think this is one of those "it depends" answers. It will depend on the available water your well can produce and will depend on the GPM of the sprinklers you are using.
can u leave the pump outside uncovered?
It seems to be sealed pretty well but since it is electrical I would use some common sense and discretion about how it is left unattended.

So wouldn't that particular pump drown the garden? All that continuous water.
Carol Kirkley you use it like any other sprinkler. Turn it on and off as needed.
Sorry, I thought I heard you say it has to run continuously.
Just to clarify, when the pump is running water has to be coming out somewhere. If you don't need water you must turn off the pump.

This is a transfer pump.
Irrigation pumps are considered transfer pumps - pumping at a high gpm but developing very little pressure or suction.
Gonna have to invest in a clip on wireless microphone, other than that great video. 👍🏼
