- On December 17, 2020 at 0749 hours NFD units were dispatched to 7733 Licking Springs Road for a report of a barn fire. While responding the dispatcher advised they had received a call from an off-duty firefighter reporting flames visible and they are upgrading the run to a working fire.
Skip to 8:15 to get to the fire action.
This house was located on the far northeast side of the city and the driveway was over 1800 feet long. .
The following equipment was on the initial assignment:
Battalion-1 with a crew of 1 (Me)
Rescue-1 (engine/rescue) with a crew of 3
Tower-1 (105 Ft. platform) with a crew of 2
Engine-2 with a crew of 3
Engine-5 with a crew of 3
Medic-5 with a crew of 3
The working fire announcement brought the following additional equipment
Ladder-3 with a crew of 3
Engine-541 with a crew of 3
Tanker-391 with a crew of 2
3 additional tankers were requested but cancelled prior to arrival.
Upon arrival a barn that was approximately 30x60 was fully involved. One 2.5” line and one 1.75” line was utilized to knock-down the bulk of the fire and protect exposures. Several cats perished in the fire.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries at this fire.
This video was recorded with a Motorola Z Force Droid cell phone, which limits the length of each video to about 30 minutes. The PIP Helmet Cam footage was recorded with a Fire Cam 1080.

I think that was the most picturesque response and commitment to a drive.
I agree.
@@commandvisionfire Very nice town also. That church was beautiful in the snow and the ride down the driveway was super awesome also. Too bad you did not get to enjoy it since you had to concentrate on your driving.
Was just thinking that when I saw your comment. Everything looks so lovely covered in snow.
Small towns and farms do have a special beauty in the snow. If you have a goodly supply of hot dogs, marshmallows and extra long sticks, you could do the full-on campfire thing.
@@commandvisionfire thats all most sound like a power of a dodge lol
Why do I have a feeling that somewhere in Ohio, there are 3 engines and a tanker still working to get out of a driveway to this day....
automatic tire chains put in work
There's way more snow in Ohio than Southern Finland atm.
These timber frame barns are starting to become a rare sight. So much skill and hard work went into building these structures a 100 years ago. So sad to see them lost.
In Britain, we have "listed buildings." If an old building is recognised as being valuable because of its age, architecture or rarity value, it will sometimes be listed. This can give it some protection from demolition, and if it's very lucky, dereliction. Different listing registers for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I don't know if in the US have a listed buildings scheme, or anything similar. It sounds as if the remaining old wooden barns should be listed.
I live in rural Wisconsin and I see these kinds of barns all over the place, possibly because we have Amish here that still build the barns basically the same way as 100 years ago, we also have a lot of barns and farmhouses that have fallen in after being abandoned.
@@crazyleyland5106 I can not talk for all states in the USA, but New York state we have Registry of historic buildings. If a building is on the list you must get approval for anything you do including painting. Most time the paint must match original colors. I worked clearing an old marina on the Hudson river that was built on an 1800's iron ore loading dock. A cement footing from an overhead tram that brought the ore to the river from the mountains is in the middle of the park we were building and could not be removed, altered or covered.
@@crazyleyland5106 That barn was not very old. The owners are Mennonites and that is how they construct their barns. Also there are computer controlled lumber mills where can order the timbers precut from your own plans or choose one of theirs for quicker assembly.
@@danielebrparish4271 Zillow listing says it was built in 1900. Photos there seem to support that age.
Love how you didn't tie up unnecessary apparatus for a lost structure and sent the rest available to be able to respond for any further incidents ..great solid work chief and great video
In this situation the fire chief made the right decision to release the the other units
@@jayhalpern389 yep
Your dispatchers did a fantastic job giving you info while enroute. They don't always get the credit they deserve.
Our dispatchers do a fantastic job. They are the unsung heroes.
Dispatchers rule
well, sometimes it takes time for backup crews and equipment to arrive on scene
I love the preplanning before being on location.
I applaud those area residents, they ALL move over even oncoming traffic, you should see the drivers here in Miami, Fl
Small town is different than big city
@@rt0110 In every way!
I was thinking similar. Over here you get people trying to race the emergency response vehicles or trying to blast around the people who do pull over. Wild stuff.
For me here in Germany the discipline of the other drivers in the video is amazing! Such a rescue mission would cause much more trouble here. Respect!
You made the right call IMO. When it's that involved all you can do is protect other property and let it burn out.
Always a tough to just let it roll. Given the lack of water supply, exposures, and the fact that the structure was a total loss on arrival the decision was spot on.
No reason to risk killing somebody in a fire truck. We weren't changing the outcome of this one. Total loss.
Totally agree Chief.
Stay safe and have a great holiday season!!
@@commandvisionfire "Save little, risk little."
@@ArchTeryx00 That's correct. If we could get everybody to think along those lines it would make our jobs safer.
Good call, there was nothing left to save. Insurance will buy them a new barn.
I’m getting into the fire service and stumbled upon your videos and I absolutely love them since I feel like I learn so much from your videos. Thank you sir and keep them coming
When your driveway is so long it makes your house have it's own zip code.
David once again great reporting on this fire event. Love your great organization instructing members where they need to be. This organization really knocks down the fire well. Shows your immense knowledge of fires and what is needed. Thank you to you and all firefighters who responded to this fire
Looks like a barn from the turn of the century; too bad it was lost before you arrived. I felt a chill watching this from Florida....Merry Christmas to all.
that drive to the fire was so beautiful and so picturesque. Fresh snow is so beautiful. Thank you Mr. Decker for that front view of the drive to the fire. was so much worth the video.
Chief Decker, you have command of a terrific team of First Responders!! I have noticed in all your fire videos you get tons of respect from everyone under your command, which is how it is suppose to be!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family, including ALL the First Responders, and Police Departments in Ohio and around this World of ours!!
I love the siren, whelen cencom sapphire alternate tones. One of my favorite sirens. It's unfortunate that the barn was a loss, I hate to see those old barns get destroyed. Whether it be from fire or mother nature. Great video!
I like the Q sirens, we don't have them in Britain and they're not too shrill. I preferred it when we had 2 tone horns, many years ago; you would need to watch German fire videos to hear those.
PA lady live
I like your videos because you are calm on the radio and give clear instructions. What really amazed me on this one is how all the traffic (well, most of the traffic) yields to you and actually stops moving in the oncoming direction. We never get that here. Great work as always.
Thanks.

9:45 - firefighter with the line is thinking “ Well this should be fun “
15:26 - Dam that thing is old
23:26 - Wall collapse
You missed 22:18 throw snowballs at fire
@@chrisbeaver9032 Aha! Ya completely missed it!
I really liked your repeated instructions to avoid heat damage to the apparatus. Hopefully this video will also serve to inform folks who live in areas that are difficult to access, far from fire stations and with no water supply for fire suppression that responses to their locations will be delayed, to be prepared for such scenarios and adjust their expectations of emergency services accordingly.
Momma always said, "Stupid is as..." No... not my mom. My grandmother had a saying tho, "You have to cull the wicked, the stupid is manifest destiny."
Live PD liar PD
It is concerning that the need was felt to remind company officers of this multiple times.
Have a pond near by would help👍
The drive getting there was much more suspenseful than fighting the fire. It was also very picturesque with the beautiful snow.
Thank you once again Chief Decker, always hard to lose a structure, but better a structure than a piece of equipment or worse a fire fighter. And this one had nothing left to save
Merry Christmas sir to you and all your crew from a fire fighters father up in Canada
I remember the Barn Fire days. Way out there and by the time we arrived it was what we called a Foundation Saver. Sad to see these old barns go this way lots of history in some of them. Great Video as always David Have a Great Holiday and a Safe one to you, your family and Brothers and Sister Firefighters.
Hey Chief, Considering water supply and the barn being fully involved, good call! Great job!! Wishing you a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!!
Great video and response also great use of the sirens as well love hearing the powercall as well. Keep up the great work Chief and stay safe!
Love you're videos, makes me miss volunteering. Keep em coming please and please you and you're crews be safe.
TY for bringing us along
And really new to this channel but this is by far one of the favourite channels I subscribe to it really gives you a broader view of how everything is done and how hard their job truly is

Bonfire at the barn😮 Good job David and crew for the swift response! Also some people need to pay attention when emergency vehicles are coming through!
Great job. There is only so much you can do in winter conditions and a fully engulfed wooden structure. There was a large barn fire a few months ago near my house and 15 departments responded. It took over 4 hours to put out and because it was on a backroad, all local tankers were called to the scene. Water had to be pumped from a nearby reservoir because the fire was stubborn. What was left of the barn ended up reigniting 2 days later and a few departments were called back. Luckily, no one was killed or injured. Thank you firefighters and first responders for all that you do👍.
Awesome response chief, I liked your tactical decisions, sometimes we just have to let some go. To all my fire service brothers and sisters, and fire control personnel at NFD stay safe, and have a merry christmas.
You guys are great in every way. Thank you
Shame to lose what looks like was a beautiful old barn. Stay safe and have a Merry Christmas!
Another great video, thank you chief. Merry Christmas to you and all
Thank you sir, great job on protecting the structure and the engine's. Stay safe an have a wonderful holiday
Love seeing your videos Chief! Keep them coming! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Stay safe!
Great job, great video! Looks like you guys are in the bullseye for the Christmas storm - stay safe! Best wishes for Christmas and have a happy New Year!
Nice job making a quick command plan and decision. This is the perfect example of the first few decisions and few minutes dictate how the next few hours will go. Knowing what manpower and equipment you needed and quickly clearing everyone else. A lot of other IC’s would have not made that decision so quick and would have loaded that entire driveway with a three ring circus. That driveway would have been a nightmare if you ended up needing to shuttle multiple loads of water. Love the videos. Merry Christmas Chief.
I have respect for all fire fighters out there my uncle was a firefighter/fire officer for over 30+ years he died of cancer over 13 years ago. 🙏💙
School bus at 5:28 had less than impressive reaction to the lights and sirens behind them, almost caused an accident
I did notice that myself the bus driver should go for retraining that was dangerous
@@Dwaine-ej7nm Very dangerous. They could have waited, should have. Pulling out in front of a semi is dumb, with kids on a bus it's nearly criminal.
I thought the same thing.
In my area, the bus drivers actions would be grounds for termination. There was no excuse for them continuing on that long before even touching their brakes.
Thanks for you service chief. Tell the boys happy holidays from us! To you and your family as well.
That was an amazing driveway and very Christmas card like, have a good and safe Christmas Chief!
Great job Chief! A great use of resources and a well planned attack. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Great video & good decision on how to handle this fire. I enjoyed the first 7 minutes of the video most, wish we had that much snow here in Illinois. Beautiful scenery!
LOVE the 3" supply tactic! Too many departments are brainwashed that 4"-5" is the only way to move water. Great work Chief!
Always a bitter call to make, but when a barn is so far gone it's usually for the best to just let it go. Excellent job and video as always Brother! Be safe and Merry Christmas!
Im very impressed with how you organize the situation and handle delegating the responsibilities like a perfect professional, The community is fortunate to have such a conscientious and competent fire chief on location. Baravo! stay safe.
Always so interesting to see your videos, this one was exceptional. Happy Holidays to you and your crew!
Thanks.
Damn dude that's one hell of a driveway to the house.
Merry Christmas to you and your family chief Decker and to all your viewers. My thoughts go out to the people who lost their cats in this fire 😥
Another great job by you and your crews Chief Decker.
Very impressed how well traffic yielded the right of way for you!!
Me too. That isn't always the case.
Ohioans are generally courteous
I'm was born and raised in Newark and I know some of the places you go by and talk about. It brings back alot of of my child hood and good thoughts and of course some bad. Keep up the good work. I love watching. Milford E Thompson. Knoxville tennessee.
Almost a "Winter Wonderland" but with a barn fire.
hot renovation is not uncommon among farmers^^
Would make a good painting
Good job in a difficult situation. Merry Christmas chief.
Stay safe out there saving lives and structures! And have a very merry Christmas! 🎄🎁
I know a bus driver that needs to be more aware of their surroundings lol.
Probably preoccupied by a Bluetooth device.
QQ
Probably trying to slow down. In those buses in this weather it takes a second to slow down.
I have to admit... I puckered up when the Chief "threaded the needle". Guess i'm gettin soft in my old age.
He or She needs a good talking too. It should have seen the lights before the siren.
Awesome Video Chief! Stay Warm out there and Merry Christmas!!
It was a loss before you arrived Chief. 200 year old wood is just tinder in a hot burn. No sense in risking assets on a ice/snow covered driveway. Good call, but you can't win them all....
this is almost the worst example of driving an emergency vehicle I've ever seen, blew......this dude should have his license 5 red lights, overtaking a school bus in a school zone barely slowing down. he should have his license revoked for 10 years !!!
@@douggriffin2910 cleared the intersections properly, very few places actually require full stops before proceeding, the passing was justified given oncoming traffic had already yielded, the bus couldn’t care less, and there were no school children present. This man is one of the most procedural, responsible, and reliable Bat’s i have seen.
As always Dave, Great command decisions.
Good job as always brothers! Be safe and Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Chief (and all your members)
Happy holidays Chief, stay safe!
Love this video. seeing all the engines coming in to help and supply water. David Decker and firies have a good Christmas when it comes. and Hope for a good 2021 from Leon in Scotland Caithness :)
Merry Christmas to you and your team. 🎄Beautiful video, sad about the losses, however. “Stay Safe”!
22:18 when water is scarce just throw snowballs, stay safe and merry Christmas
Chief great driving at red lights and drivers get out of the way. Great job.
Another great video and job Chief.. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
That was some great tactical driving at 4:04.
As always. You guys do a wonderful job. Stay safe out there. God bless. Merry Christmas to all you and your families! ❤️🚒👩🚒🙏❄️⛄🎄
Thanks Chief
The snow looks beautiful
Really nice how you support your community. (Description)........ Happy Holidays to all First Responders ! 🎄
Beautiful winter landscape of an equally nice area, where the people are just a tad smarter than average (and all drivers on the road are paying attention and giving way!)
Stay safe & Merry Christmas to you and all at your firehouse from Spain 👏👍
Definitely a good call not tying up too many resources. The barn was lost. Protect exposers and keep other resources in service and able to respond to other calls. There are too many times when resources are wasted (water, equipment and manpower) for already lost buildings.
Chief Decker at it again !!!
Merry Christmas Chief Decker and to your men and women of the Newark Fire Department and all of your families hope that everyone has A WONDERFUL MERRY CHRISTMAS Weekend and everyone stays safe
Beautiful spot for a farm. Not a great spot for a barn fire 😊 That driveway run made my stomach flip until you and the engine made it. Great response to a rural fire! Hope all have a Merry and safe Christmas.
Its just one of the risks of living in the country.
Great work on this, I would imagine getting water up there was not an easy thing to do.
So refreshing to see the public actually yielding to the apparatus!
Wow, not much left of it on arrival hey? Love your calm but stern commands. No humming and hawing.
Nice footage Chief. Too bad for the barn but y’all did the best that could be done given the situation at hand. Keep up the good work.
Terrific catch as usual the paramedics and firemen deserve a lot of credit your service and time and efforts even in the cold and snow conditions job well done you should be proud love and appreciate you guys thanks ! Joe
Amazingly efficient communications!
you guys are by far one of the best departments out there. far too often do i see videos and think "how did they earn that leadership position?" but with you it is clear how YOU did it, via excellence and a passion for the craft. please become a full time instructor at the end of your career rather than just retiring, PLEASE, SOO many departments need to take note from you i have seent sum thangs on these interwebs that scare me... the amount of inept departments gives me daymares lmao.
Thanks. I work with a great team who takes the job seriously and they devote a lot of time to training.
@@commandvisionfire you can tell. i grew up in various parts of FL and my late father, who i share a name with, was a battalion/district chief before his untimely passing, so i know a great team when i see one having grown up in a fire house :)
Love the alt wail and power call!
Me too. That's a Whelen 295 siren.
Great strategic call chief; not many out there who would have taken that approach.
Merry Christmas to you and your guys. The Heros Conquered Once Again. Stay Safe All
Nice response Chief , and great job by all...A cistern would be nice on property like that.
Wow 😯!!! Unbelievable. I bet no one was affected but the neighbors attention were captured. Whoever live right by there were scared.
Chief Decker your the best keep only what you need at the box and put the rest back to protect the city we need more Chiefs like you man
Good job everyone thank God nobody was hurt that was a hard road to get to. May God continue to bless all Fire Fighters and their family's. ❤🙏🇺🇲
That's a nice place. A fire that big burning that long is like you said not going to be stopped that was waaaay out there.
Thats interesting you call that a long drive. In rural Kansas we are happy to have something 8 minutes away, seems like a lot of times its a 10 or 15 minute drive. But then again we have WAY less population. Don't take me wrong I'm not knocking you for calling that a long drive, just find it very interesting comparing the different locals.
