While this isn't my favorite WW run, it is very nice to see DC make a lot of the New 52 era stuff available in Omni format. Great overview as always Omar!
That New 52 run some people hate it, others love it. I found it to be very different, a different take on the mythology but overall I found it to be great.
Love this run. Ranks number four on my favorite runs of all time. The story and the characters. Amazing. The fresh takes were very welcome and great. Another thing you mentioned that was awesome was it felt like it was in it's own pocket universe. Still in the DC universe but doing it's own thing. Yes, the New Genesis New Gods showed up, but they weren't being used anywhere else. Something that DC creators have been doing for at least 20 years now is having Batman show up in their stories. Batman here, Batman there, Batman everywhere. It gets so annoying that every other amazing character DC has in their catalog, has to be compared against Batman. Do they have an editorial mandate for that? It was refreshing that this was a Wonder Woman story. It stared Wonder Woman and her cast of characters. She didn't need Batman's "detective skills" like Rucka sadly did. Brian Azzarello gave us a Wonder Woman story and showed us Wonder Woman stands on her own. He didn't even acknowledge the romantic relationship with Superman. Such a great story. Also, want a reprint of Simone's run and Rucka's run in omnis. Take care and peace everyone.
Would be interesting to know which are your three favorite runs. Grown up in the bronze age I re-entered the DC Universe as a young adult in 89 when Batman hit the box-office and The Dark Knight Returns got promoted here in Germany. Going straight to Knightfall in the early nineties. I appreciated that back in the day the Batman universe was also more or less a pocket universe-Batman family, Batman villains, almost zero so called metahumans and or any superpowered classic superheroes present in the Batman titles. Same in Mike Grell’s Green Arrow run, which was also an amazing read. In 2020 I rediscovered my passion for comics and DC in particular, purchased hundreds of modern age collected editions and omnibuses, and I have to admit that Brian Azzarello’s Wonder Woman run is a masterpiece. A month ago I read it for the first time, and I think I will read it again in the near future. The Greek gods-amazing! The entire thing has movie potential!
@@VolkerThen That's so cool. Reading this run for the first time in omni format. I'm jealous. Alright. Top 3. 1: Green Lantern By Geoff Johns. 2: Uncanny X-Force By Rick Remender. 3: Fantastic Four By Jonathan Hickman. It's a lot of fun when characters play in their own pockets with very little cameos. Immortal Hulk is a near perfect recent example. The Bat-titles kept marching on to their own tune in the 90's for sure. Grell's Green Arrow run is on my very long list of must reads. It would be awesome if DC did this as an animated feature. No way this would be adapted to live action. Too many changes to her overall traditional backstory. I think I read somewhere this was going to be an out of continuity Vertigo series. It was then green-lit as part of the New 52. Weird. What are your top four runs? I listed mine, only fair you list yours. Take care and peace.
@@nathanwalters4867 Thanks Nathan! Remember, they used Brian Azzarello's diversion in the 2017 movie-Diana was the daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus, she was the "god-killer". The funny thing is that Azzarello didn't acknowledge the relationship with Superman but in Dark Knight: The Master Race it was all about this relationship! My top runs are Green Lantern by Geoff Johns, Mike Grell's Green Arrow, George Perez's Wonder Woman, and the Batman run of various authors-mainly Dixon, Moench, O'Neill, Grant and later Brubaker and Rucka-spanning over a decade from 1989 with A Lonely Place Of Dying til the end of No Man's Land in 2001, Scott Snyder's Batman run, and maybe Grant Morrison's Animal Man (I just started reading), and of cource Brubaker's Catwoman and Brubaker-Rucka's Gotham Central and all that is connected to Infinite Crisis. ;-) And literally nothing from DC Rebirth. I read the entire Tom King run which ruined Batman, Catwoman and all other related characters. Doomsday clock, Death Metal, Dark Nights Metal, have been at least a fun read, but they did nothing for character development or anything that made these characters likeable. Some Marvel stuff is on my must-read list including those that you mentioned, I like Rick Remeder, read Black Science a while ago. Yeah, take care!
@karldunne5703 I feel your pain. It's so expensive right now in the aftermarket. I'm sure it will get reprinted one day, fingers crossed that it happens soon!
I wasn't around for the whole "Wonder Woman's Pants" thing, except when that image from the unsuccessful pitch pilot of the David E. Kelley TV series hit the internet way back when. But one thing still remains unresolved... does Omar wear pants when he is behind his desk? 🤔 I say... PANTS, NO MORE!!!1! 🤯 Also, I picked up a copy of the previous printing last year.
I read this in trade paperback. I love Cliff Chiang’s art! The story though was good, but didn’t feel like a Wonder Woman story to me. Rucka’s Wondie is where is at.
Thanks for this overview. I got curious given the creators involved. I haven't read any WW but I love Greek mythology. However, you failed to convince me to buy this omni. I want the Absolutes for that amazing artwork!
For how much Wonder Woman got "rebooted" in Rebirth many things stay the same. For instance, way after New 52 you still have the Greek gods look like this. So I love that idea. And the new origin of WW is AMAZING. It´s a retcon that works. It doesn´t complete negates what was always known. Plus, it´s "easily" explain this way that she´s a demigoddess, and, as such...one of the most powerful characters in DC. And why she´s a member of the Trinity. PS Hera still looks like this version when she´s portrayed as member of The Quintescence during Infinite Frontier. ...and I´d wish DC would bring back First Born.
I don’t think you’ve ever done a look at this Omnibus. This, I think, was my first ever Omnibus purchase when I started watching your channel at the beginning of covid lockdown in 2020. ❤ I completely love this omni.
@@ellesse3862 yeah but at least those are different formats if you want to go the tpb or hc route instead of collecting omnis. DC gonna DC I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Why so many people despises this run? I didn’t have the chance to read it yet, but reading the comments there’s a lot of people that can’t stand that run 🤔🤔🤔
Best run of Wonder Woman. For some reason, DC did something smart and allowed Azzarello to write fun, nihilistic, stories (relative to what we normally see in the Wonder Woman universe) with good characterizations. Unfortunately, that was a while ago, and since then, the writing is the worst and the most agenda driven since the 70s.
DC, for the love of all that's holy, please give us a Greg Rucka Wonder Woman omnibus.
Yes!!!!
Or at least reprint Gail Simone’s run.
Exactly!!👍🏼
@@shengcer That's coming in November.

Bought this Omni during the pandemic. If the entire run were done by Cliff Chiang it would have been LEGENDARY

Yes PLEASE on a Wonder Woman reading order
When this got announced a reprint I immediately bought the old printing for about $60.
I love your review of Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang, Omar!!!! Thanks!!!!
My pleasure!
I randomly found a used copy of this for 60 bucks at my LCS. Got super lucky. This was also my first WW series!
I love the spine, I wish all N52 omnibus would be like this.
