A full frame digital camera is relatively expensive, and a bigger than full frame camera is forbiddingly costly. Not only that, they are also not compact enough for street photography. However there is a way to get bigger than full frame, without breaking your bank or your arm. Watch the latest DRTV episode to find out...
I've found a lovely example of an XPan II for sale...the downside is it's nearly £5000. (Does include all three lenses, though) Anyone fancy sponsoring me?! ;-)
Great episode. Just a couple of guys trying out unique cameras on the street and having a great time, talking us through it and wrapping it all up in the end. No need for jokes, silliness or comedy. Just love and appreciation for photography. More of this, please!
I must say, both of these cameras have such an amazing 'feel' to their photos, but I don't think i've ever been blown away from a photo like I have from the hasselblad's. I mean, it may not be the best 'technically' but just the look of the images... I fell in love.
Not only those cameras can be refreshing. You guys are definitely the best photography channel on all UA-cam. Im watching all of it, even old episodes!
Glad to see you're talking about film more often, that makes me recover the faith in this awesome show. Also, those Kai shots are SUPERB! So dramatic and cinematic that make me want to buy an XPAN, I just love them!
It's great to see a video where they are passionate about the gear they are using and great to see some good shots taken for a change. The finished results were stunning especially from the hasselblad!
+Justin Jones Alot of the time he is reviewing a camera he could care less about, therefore the pictures he produces are going to turn out extremely mediocre. But here you can see how passionate he is about that Hasselblad, and it certainly shows in his final shots.
I've been told about the fujifilm hasselblad several times; and now i know why! After i buy my leica i'm getting a hasselblad. I can't thank you enough for this review. I hope to see more AnolagRev+ in the future!
DigitalRev TV This video is absolutely briliant. You showed them "its not always full frame" kinda thing. Personally, your shots with the panorama Hasselblad were excellent. This video should be the highlight in DRevTV
You might get one for free or a few hundred dollars from an older family member or a relative or a friend though. Always ask around first before buying one in a store.
Compare that to digital medium format cameras that are often over $5k or even close to $10k just for a body. Hell, even entry-level (new) full frame cameras are that expensive if you include a decent lens.
11 people who disliked are digital geeks. I love shooting with film. Slows you down, makes you think, and you get that 'look' from an image as a bonus. Perfect.
I watched this video when it came out back in 2014, it prompted me to make the most expensive film camera purchase I've ever made at that point in time. I'd like to thank these guys for that, I'd never be able to afford to purchase it now!
nice video and finally some lok in front of camera again :D and also nice cameras.. and also great photos in this one.. and great you keep the style of beeing infrormative and funny at the same time like in your oldest videos, somehow kais photos are really good in this one and the panorama looks really great for this photos.
it could also be mental. I take better film photos than I do digital as well. I also think I get flustered because of all the buttons and autofocus. I tested out the sony a7r and I saw all that shit going on the screen. I just put it down and slowly backed away.
Don't think its because film, more because that aspect ratio just produces something more appealing to most (including me!). I mean being film might make him think about shots more but I dont doubt he could get good shots like this on a digital version of the same camera.(I'd kill for one of those)
Hi, I'm a big digital Rev fan. Thanks for making so many great videos. This is my all time favorite one. Any chance you guys could please do an x-pan vs. Tx-1. I would also live to know about how the optics work and how students or budget conscious consumers can take similar photos to these cameras. Thanks!
Great! Never known about those camera's cool to learn about them. I gonna try out film myself too, never shot film. I have a Chinon Memotron CEII and a Helios 44-2 58mm F2 :) haha nice Philips Bloom :D
I started watching this channel about ten days ago and got completely addicted. I watched videos about cameras I don't even care about just because the chemistry between Kai, Lok, and Alamby was so good. That said, I do miss Alamby. And not for perverted reasons lol. She was funny and complimented Kai and Lok well. I hope DRTV is searching for an adequate replacement!
It's amazing to see both of these companies create the next versus devices to match this video. Please compare the X1D and the new medium format fujifilm when it is released. It's like a 2016 version of this video.
BTW, does anyone know something about the Rollei film Kai was using? I've never heard of that but it's AMAZING, remains details while contrasty, the tone rendering, especially the midtones..
Love your channel, guys. I think we're going to move onto full frame and be good with that but it's good to know that theres affordable ways to get even bigger :)
Interesting how Kai's photo with film cameras are much better than the ones he takes with digital ones, It's a thing I've noticed too in one of the old Leica videos.
I grew up with my dad teaching me the fundamentals of processing film in the darkroom. I probably spent at least a few thousands of hours with him developing film. I still love it but I certainly don't miss it. I think this is what we call progress. In the same way that you can still cut dovetails with a hammer and chisel, if you so choose, but it's a lot easier and a LOT faster with a router and a high quality cutting bit.
Franken Stein Was just think about how its the same with synthesizers. You go from using presets on fruity loops to building you own complex racks on ableton to full blown analog hardsynths once you know what your doing.
Kai is nailing the photos on this one!
Absolutely. Usually hes shooting digital, so theres no limit to how many shots he can shoot, but here he has to think a bit before shooting.
out of all of kais photos these are my absolute favorite
I couldn't agree more.
NETRO the constrast is perfect in my opinion. It depends a lot of the film and how the lab process it.
>How to Get Bigger Than Full Frame without Breaking Your Bank
>prices actually fucking demolishes your bank
+The Dead Immortal *versus digital medium format.
>HOW ABOUT NOW???
Every picture from the Hasselblad was absolutely stunning. Definitely the best pictures I've ever seen on this channel.
Some of the best shots Kai has ever taken.
I think these are Kai's best shots
Still is, even 5 years later. (2021)
A full frame digital camera is relatively expensive, and a bigger than full frame camera is forbiddingly costly. Not only that, they are also not compact enough for street photography. However there is a way to get bigger than full frame, without breaking your bank or your arm. Watch the latest DRTV episode to find out...
I now really, really, really want a Hasselblad Xpan.
Thanks, DigitalRev, for giving me more unfulfilled camera dreams! (My wife isn't impressed.) ;-)
I rented one back when they were still new to market, and I loved it. I would still love to snatch one up.
however if u keep buying film and process it, it'll cost more :p. But I'll get one of those.
Kurnia Lim that's why you need to think first before you shoot....
I've found a lovely example of an XPan II for sale...the downside is it's nearly £5000. (Does include all three lenses, though)
Anyone fancy sponsoring me?! ;-)
In this episode: Kai proves he is actually an amazing photographer :)
also an editor:
Oh yeah, that kinky guy with camera...
Kai's pictures are insane!
+Dumb Stone they were behind perfect i couldnt sit still
This Panorama camera is actually quite amazing..
Check out the sprocket rocket for a cheap panoramic film camera :)
Great episode. Just a couple of guys trying out unique cameras on the street and having a great time, talking us through it and wrapping it all up in the end. No need for jokes, silliness or comedy. Just love and appreciation for photography. More of this, please!
Holy shit, those panoramas look awesome! Best shots kai ever took!
Richard well it costs used 3600$
I must say, both of these cameras have such an amazing 'feel' to their photos, but I don't think i've ever been blown away from a photo like I have from the hasselblad's. I mean, it may not be the best 'technically' but just the look of the images... I fell in love.
"That's like getting a girlfriend and finding out you don't like girls that much."
I laughed too hard.
Don't knock it up til you try it.
Not only those cameras can be refreshing. You guys are definitely the best photography channel on all UA-cam. Im watching all of it, even old episodes!
Those shots are amazing :)
Glad to see you're talking about film more often, that makes me recover the faith in this awesome show. Also, those Kai shots are SUPERB! So dramatic and cinematic that make me want to buy an XPAN, I just love them!
Pictures from that Hasselblad XPan are amazing!
ikr, I like the aspect ratio too....this is indeed something for the wealthy people
***** nothing a two post-it notes stick on a display can't fix :D
SamoScopom PFHAHAHAH ...good idea actually
I was just about to write the same!!
$2,000 +
It's great to see a video where they are passionate about the gear they are using and great to see some good shots taken for a change.
The finished results were stunning especially from the hasselblad!
I am in love with Kai's camera.
Kai's photos are usually a bit rubbish, but here they are very good - he has obviously found his camera!
+Justin Jones Alot of the time he is reviewing a camera he could care less about, therefore the pictures he produces are going to turn out extremely mediocre. But here you can see how passionate he is about that Hasselblad, and it certainly shows in his final shots.
I think your head is upside down!
Agreed, it may be the format but 90% of his pics in the video are amazing and so involving!
+AndreCorner It's the format
Nickolas Carl that probably is but still, people could do multiple shots and make them "larger" but they're not necessarily better
In my opinion these hare hands down Kai's best ever Digitalrev photos.
That XPAN makes everything look so good.
In my opinion, I think AnalogRev are the best episodes.
Those Xpan photos are truly the coolest photos i have seen Kai take. I really love the cinematic feel!
The B&W shots from kai were really beautiful. Great job!
The Hasselblad, the Fujifilm and the Makina - three gorgeous dream cams! Wow! Thank for showing.
kai's pictures look like extraxts from a movie
Its nearly the same aspect ratio of a movie
* cinemascope
Most movies are not in this aspect (but the more popular ones are).
What aspect was it ?
About 3:1
Black and white photos are sooooo satisfying to look at. That contrast
Even to the untrained eye, that Hasselblad has an aesthetic that just jumps out and slaps u in the face. I'm blown away
If it needs a "trained eye" then you weren't very good in the first place.
When I worked in a photolab in Sydney, my boss had an Xpan and I developed all his film. The Xpan is a gorgeous camera and nothing beats film
"Without breaking your bank" and both of these are like $3000 on Amazon xD
EposVox yea but that's Amazon
You might get one for free or a few hundred dollars from an older family member or a relative or a friend though. Always ask around first before buying one in a store.
And on ebay not so much cheapo......for that price i can buy a d850 or a 5d mk 4
It was cheaper when the video was published. But now the heat of vintage cameras were rising
Compare that to digital medium format cameras that are often over $5k or even close to $10k just for a body.
Hell, even entry-level (new) full frame cameras are that expensive if you include a decent lens.
Those panorama pictures look frigging good I must say!
The photos Kai took on the street were all fantastic. I loved them so much. Lok did an amazing job too. He should do reviews a little more often!!
I can watch this episode over and over and over. Great Images.
11 people who disliked are digital geeks. I love shooting with film. Slows you down, makes you think, and you get that 'look' from an image as a bonus. Perfect.
Best DR video in a long time. Nice work!
those panoramic pictures from kai's camera are gorgeous.
The Hasselblad XPan is one of the most interesting cameras i' ve ever seen. It would be nice to have!
As always fantastic video!
that sharpness and contrast from "Hasselblad" shots, amazing :)
The first Kai's nice shots i've ever seen.
another camera envy!!! I love how you not only review DSLRs, but also analog cameras. :-)
Kai's photos are just stunning.
I watched this video when it came out back in 2014, it prompted me to make the most expensive film camera purchase I've ever made at that point in time.
I'd like to thank these guys for that, I'd never be able to afford to purchase it now!
Exactly!
Now the Xpan price is inflated like hell!
I can feel Lok and Kai very happy on this video.
The colors rendition on these kind of cameras is amazing! Wonder what that is, it's so retro yet full, can't explain it but I love it!
One of your best in a while! Great job guys!
i like how because you are shooting film you are actually taking care about how your shots will turn out for a change xD
nice video and finally some lok in front of camera again :D and also nice cameras.. and also great photos in this one.. and great you keep the style of beeing infrormative and funny at the same time like in your oldest videos, somehow kais photos are really good in this one and the panorama looks really great for this photos.
Usually Kai's test shots walking in the streets are pretty boring for me, but these looked amazing!!!!
Kai takes waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy better pictures with film and that camera!!!! o.O :D
it's the magic of film :)
it makes you think more about your shot, considering you only have 36 photos
Perhaps because you need to be more careful choosing shots with film, there's no spray and pray with 10+ fps and each frame costs something too :)
it could also be mental. I take better film photos than I do digital as well. I also think I get flustered because of all the buttons and autofocus. I tested out the sony a7r and I saw all that shit going on the screen. I just put it down and slowly backed away.

those cinematic shots from kai are amazing! now i just need a cinema video camera
Kai's at the top of his composition game. Every photo was awesome!
wow.. Kai's B&Ws are stunning.
Those B&W from Kai are amazing!
Thanks!
Episodes are a lot better when Kai is actually serious and not trying to be funny. And having lok around is also pretty fun .
Nice street panoramas !
Portra 800 looks awesome overexposed by a couple of stops, no need for f8 !!
These are probably the best photos lok and kai have taken on their videos.
That Makina and the Film choice was superb !!! Color, Saturation and Noise was great...
wow..Kai's shots turn out really well.
Kai's black and white film shots are incredible.
Those pano shots are gorgeous... I really want that camera now.
Great! Never known about those camera's cool to learn about them. I gonna try out film myself too, never shot film. I have a Chinon Memotron CEII and a Helios 44-2 58mm F2 :)
haha nice Philips Bloom :D
***** yes, that`s them :)
I have a Helios 50mm 2.0 in Nikon F-mount
I started watching this channel about ten days ago and got completely addicted. I watched videos about cameras I don't even care about just because the chemistry between Kai, Lok, and Alamby was so good. That said, I do miss Alamby. And not for perverted reasons lol. She was funny and complimented Kai and Lok well. I hope DRTV is searching for an adequate replacement!
Wow those shots from the xpan were really amazing. Im glad you went with the black and white
Kai did so well on this video, brilliant shots!
That medium format Pentax 6x7 with the wooden handle that Lok said was too heavy is what I've been using for street photography recently!
Of course you can use it for anything, just it's not so great for candid shots :D
Kai started as a film photographer and I think it shows in these shots, really nice!
It's amazing to see both of these companies create the next versus devices to match this video. Please compare the X1D and the new medium format fujifilm when it is released. It's like a 2016 version of this video.
that panoramic view + black and white combo damn! what a combination !
I've been using Xpan Xpan II, they are superb and unique cameras, I highly recommend to get one if you could find one
One of my personal favourite videos from DRTV!
This one was one of the more enjoyable episodes.
those shots from the X-Pan were fantastic Kai!
those are some cool cameras, good vid! also, please bring back kinky soon :D
The XPAN si such an amazing camera! Shooting in Panorama is great.
you got a lot of inspired shots this time. I really loved the panoramas
You can shoot in colour with a black and white camera, if you use 3 filters (r,g,b) and merge them with some colour correction.
All of the shots from the Xpan look amazing.
That hassleblad xpan shots the most soulfull and cinematic looking pictures i've ever seen
Love the analog rev episodes. Nice.
Kai's photos were absolutely gorgeous with that camera!
Those panoramic pics are stupidly stunning. Love it
I love these analog episodes. Too bad you guys didn't have a Mamiya 6 or 7...I think those are the best medium format range finders.
Those black and white shots are fantastic
Interesting how Kai's photo with film cameras are much better than the ones he takes with digital ones, It's a thing I've noticed too in one of the old Leica videos.
The panoramic shooting was really interesting, very nice results.
The pics from that Hassy are amazing. Super dreamlike.
Those black and white panorama shots turned out incredible. . .
If only I'd have bought an X-Pan when this video came out and they were still somewhat affordable.
Kai's shots were beautiful!
First time I've ever said this about a Hassie past ISO 100 - those are stunningly detailed photographs.
I grew up with my dad teaching me the fundamentals of processing film in the darkroom. I probably spent at least a few thousands of hours with him developing film. I still love it but I certainly don't miss it. I think this is what we call progress. In the same way that you can still cut dovetails with a hammer and chisel, if you so choose, but it's a lot easier and a LOT faster with a router and a high quality cutting bit.
i can shoot in the morning and have a print by the end of the day. unless i owned a very expensive printer, thats not possible with digital
Lane Williams Upload the photo the Walmart photo shop and you can pick it up during lunch.
Lane Williams you can buy a HP printer, the expensive part is the photo paper
Franken Stein Was just think about how its the same with synthesizers. You go from using presets on fruity loops to building you own complex racks on ableton to full blown analog hardsynths once you know what your doing.
Kai's Hasselblad XPan photos are gorgeous. I can't get over them. I think I have to buy one.
And finally :D
For the first time Kai's photos looks awesome :P
The images from the two cameras are amazing!
