I had an exchange with Alex Newport about this era a few months ago: * This demo was recorded at Mad Dog Studio, Burbank, CA (same place where Landscape Tantrums and the 2004 overdubs for A Manual Dexterity were recorded) and wasn't supposed to be a demo, but a proper release. It was recorded on analog tape and shelved after Blake was fired (around August). * The 2001 sessions for Omar's "A Manual Dexterity" happened "days after this session" and that "they were quicker, less complex. I had a lot less input on those sessions as Omar had a vision for what he wanted to do and was really the producer for those sessions, with me as engineer. I worked on maybe 3-5 songs over 2-3 days, and I didn’t do the mixing just the recording." * Tremulant was recorded at The Compound in Long Beach (called Tone Collector at the time) before the first TMV tour (October) and was supposed to be a demo, but they liked how it turned out and decided to do a proper mix of it (at LAFX in Burbank on their API console in December). "I remember Omar asking why I was spending time working on the sounds just for a demo, and I commented that you never know what might happen to the tracks…"
@@sagecarter2368 LT was recorded after this and Tremulant. Nobody knows for sure why Cicatriz wasn't on LT, but there's a rumor that it was scrapped at the time until Rick Rubin asked them to re-work it, like he asked them to re-work the Tremulant tracks.
I remember hearing about them around this time in Chile, these were the only tracks I found on eMule. Months later, the LP came and the MTV rounds of Inertiatic ESP too.
I vividly remember listening to these tracks on a bootleg cd that I got from a sketchy dude in a record store in Portsmouth, Va. I fell in love with music all over again that night.
I remember grabbing these off Kazaa/Morpheus/whatever it was back in the day, and as someone who was big into punk and the post-hardcore/"emo" stuff like ATDI, Alexisonfire, etc., it had a HUGE effect on my music taste. I can't understate how important this specific version of "Roulette Dares" is to me. When they released "Landscape Tantrums" this year I got excited thinking this is what I'd be hearing and was disappointed when it was a different demo altogether. I love things like the breakdown at 2:05 and the whispered "this is the haunt of roulette dares" at the intro. As much as I like the more polished album version, this will always be one closest to my heart. So thank you for uploading.
Wow. I haven't heard these since high school before "Deloused..." was released. I would listened to Tremulant EP + these tracks constantly. Then the album came out and was blown away by how they made these songs way. more chaotic and amazing. I remember a lot of people on the message boards were not happy with the change ahaha
Same. I kind of forgot about the earlier versions, and this made me extremely nostalgic. I was just starting high school around then, too. I do distinctly remember people, both online and older kids I went to shows w/, shitting on Deloused when it 1st came out. No band ever had, or would, touch the hot realness that was ATDI in our minds at the time. So, for a lot of fans, the extravagantly long, sweeping prog epics full of experimental jazz weirdness didn't match expectations. I'm pretty sure it didn't last too long... and they'd likely all deny that now.
I first heard roulette dares on the way to and then again back from visiting auschwitz and birkenau... Exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed.. My head developed quite a twisted relationship of imagery between those lyrics and what those poor people there went through.
Blake's snare sound is so fat, reminds me of Steve Albini production, especially on In Utero and Surfer Rosa. That synth towards the end of Roulette is definitely ELP vibes Cicatrix verse is way sexier in demo form, doesn't have that harsh edge of the Deloused version. The chorus is really lacking and just sounds unfinished. Outro is really cool though.
Amen to that. The part that begins at 4:00 brings me right back to being 18 and listening to this while waiting to meet my girlfriend on a warm summer night. When it starts I can almost smell the air, it’s crazy.
1:53 note the different lyrics. Instead of "It's because this is...." he sings "It's because this? is great?" or "death is great?". What is he singing here that was removed later?
"it's because this is disarray" or it could be "it's because of his brain" referring to Julio their friend who killed himself since the album is based off of him. It's hard to say in all honesty.
the production on these versions is so much better than the Rick Rubin trash from the album. You can still hear the organ and Cedrics voice sounds much more natural.
idk if it is still going but like 10 years ago you could get music on The Comatorium forum. I have also found bootleg vinyl of live recordings that also contain the demos.

This is the Cicatrix version I became familiar with and I thought it was so atmospheric and futuristic and amazing. then the Album came out and they did a rushed bullshit "LIVE BAND" sloppy version, sacrificing all the atmospherics and mood, and it made me so mad I never listened to The Mars Volta again.

Cool story bro
So was Landscape Tamtrums recorded after this & Tremulant? I’ve been wondering why there’s no Cicatrix on it

You can totally tell that Cedric was fresh out of at the drive in with this less overproduced mix
mars volta was such an exciting band around this time. the buzz/hype at those early Chain Reaction/Troubadour shows was unreal.

had exactly the same experience, quite life changing for me at that time and the years after that really
0:39 Blake Flemming creating the sound of the Mars Volta
woah i was not prepared for that breakdown at 2:05
and wow that song transition!!!
You can tell they hadn’t really shaken that dub influence from being in De Facto yet.
That’s true I never really noticed that
@Aaron Kroll Yeah but is this Jon or Blake drumming on this ??
@@DaFreezeey it blake
@oingosboingo love jon but yeah he made them tone down the dub then thomas completely killed it
3:13 Wooooooo!! listen to those keys
Ahhh yeah....😅
But for me the bridge to the chorus,..the keys are sooo clearly...amazing. 1:26 / 1:27 - 1:36

@@nimblebimble its kind of amazing how deep the lore for this band runs
i like his whispering in the beginning of roulette dares
wish we saw more of this side of the volta boys
***hearteyes*** i feel so amazing to translate this step in the songs progress; I Appreciate this, thanks
I feel like these recordings really exemplify Jeremy Ward's influence on the band.
Imagine being the one person who disliked this.
OMFG it's like the hidden ATDI album
atdi but good
If the album's rendition of Roulette Dares wanted to assault your ears and probe your mind, this one just really wants you to dance
this has been a lost gem for
