Like Lang says below, the point of this series is to showcase different styles of sherry casks and how they interact with the Springbank distillery character over time. PX was the 1st release, darkest, and spent the shortest amount of time in sherry casks. Next up is Palo Cortado and spends 4yr in sherry. Amontillado 5yr in sherry. Fino 6yrs in sherry. Manzanilla 7yrs in sherry. The PX casks were from Jose Y Miguel Martin per the distillery.

Maybe year or two to long? It was experiment so who knows? If SB would do three versions of one two and finally three years of finishing we could know which one is the best?

It definitely has some good umami notes and I can see a delicious Andes chocolate mint for sure. There's still the cookie dough ......but it is drenched in that PX and bourbon. For me the peat is found in the pepper notes and oaky notes....it also has some nice light and not overpowering floral notes (lilies). Mike is right on brown sugar...but it almost goes into molasses in the most delicious way. along with some almond and walnut nuttiness and on top of that is a delicious marshmallow fluff note. The last thing that I get is a Praline note like I use to get on the old Abundah's. Excellent review boys!!!

My friend got a sample of this one from the disillery when it was just 8 yo. It was great and PX wasn't so overpowering.

I think if they'd used a PX from an american oak butt, I think it would have worked out MUCH better. Way too much spanish oak here.

I'm hard-pressed to think of a similar or alternative whisky, and the best I can come up with might be Tamdhu Batch Strength or GlenAllechie 10 CS, but neither has Springbank's underlying peat, and something like Kilchoman Loch Gorm is super-smoky; so? 🤔
As for the $200 pricetag, despite my curiosity, that's just a stretch I'm just not comfortable with ✌️

    Nice review as always gents.
I think we run the risk of missing the point with this series of releases. The whole point about the series is to showcase the influence of different Sherry cask maturations on the Springbank spirit, some are bound to be a bit more successful than others.
I don’t think PX maturation or finish is something Springbank have used that much historically.
So for me this is an interesting experiment but I terms of learning it would be that the period of the secondary PX maturation was too long and this has resulted in an end product that lacks a bit of balance and has rather dominated the distillery character.

It should be noted and is often overlooked, but not all PX casks as the same. These casks are exceptionally dark and the spanish oak is clearly extremely active. This is nothing like PX casks that say a Kavalan uses.

There's a difference between being a Springbank fan as I am, and a Springbank cultist as so many seem to be these days.
If you're a middle age newbie with money to burn, and you've latched onto certain UA-camrs, you might conclude Springbank is the only distillery on Earth not trying to rob & poison you.

That's what the 18 is I suppose. They do 12 CS and 18 with generally bourbon and sherry. The 15 is their regular release, generally refill sherry, but recently clearly they've used wet casks in that mix. Springbank and PX cannot be bad, but I think you make an excellent point with the overintense sherry flavor and color on whisky recently. We have experienced something similar in several bottles. (The new Bladnoch PX is a good example.) It's good and all but slightly subtler sherry you get in older bottlings really rock my world.

The issue I see with this SB is the price tag, I won't see it for under $200. And having purchased the Hazelburn 15 sherry less than 6 months ago for $50 less... this SB can't be worth $50 more can it?

Wow, you asked an easy question, but you set it up to make it HARD! The hazelburn 15 is a night and day better whisky. Full stop (Sorry to Rob whisky in the 6). But that said, it's not as fun as this one. For me I think they were 20 difference in price and this is higher proof so I didn't feel the price gap was so terrible. But for 50 more....this might still be more fun as it does offer a unique experience. So I'm a fan boy of springbank. I made SURE my closest whisky friends got a bottle to my own determent (coulda been my bottles). I was a bit more stingy with the HB 15, those were for me lol. Mike got one, but otherwise :)
