****Important***** for those of you that are triggered by my recommendation to not use a swivel.. then proceed to comment that it says to use a swivel on the packaging. It says to use a duolock snap... Which is NOT a swivel. Or use a loop knot which is a knot,... not a swivel. Neither one of those things will change the action of the lure and that's why it's okay to use either one. A swivel will alter the action and can be used but is not necessary. The factory action of the lure is incredible and doesn't need to be changed by adding anything. I do recommend to attach a swivel if you're going to troll with this lure as long periods of swimming with the factory action will create a line twist. Line twist are not a problem when just casting in retrieving. If you are having line twist issues, just casting and retrieving, you likely have a problem with your reel or line
Holy crap that was so funny when the kid behind him pulled up a bundle of moss! Lmao
I was just wondering what he caught that on? lol
Those copper spoons are probably my favorite lure. They're very versatile in what they attract. I also have had no problems getting hits using them with a swivel.
I like how you said straightout , “some people say you need to put on a barrel swivel! Thats stupid.” 😂😂
I tell it how it is!
You have some of the best instructional videos for trout. Thank!
I'm glad you enjoy them. We have a whole lot more coming... More updated videos.
Your boys fish was looking pretty bad. 😂😂
I've had much success trolling with these. The only thing that initially attracted me to the lure in the store was the no gimmick simple old school looking (made in USA) package. They should never change that.
Fairly new to fresh water fishing and using lures. Had one of these and tried it out. 7 hits in an hour. 1 shook off two came in. Thanks for the tips.
That's what the video is all about!
use a siwash hook these trebles shake off
I just started using them by recommendation. The fist few outings were skunks with them, but then as soon as I learned how to use them now I catch automatic!
Awesome!!
First time trying, second cast out. I caught a rainbow trout immediately off the rainbow color. Was reeling it in and fish broke like with the hook
Awesome, thank you for this, just got a bunch of Thomas lures and can't wait to try them! Gonna be using a plain snap at the end of my leader though, should still give the spoon proper action!
Thomas lures are designed to swim the way they were designed without the swivel. That is direct from Thomas lures.
I only use snap swivels for in-line spinners, for spoons I like just a basic old duolock snap, for convenience. Just gotta make sure it's rounded. It also kind of imitates a loop knot!
Slow and steady for sure. It can vary from day to day but with my experience these spoons work best with as slow retrieve as possible. I even retrieve slower than this. But it depends of course on gear ratio.
One of my favorite summer steelhead lures
I’ve just received my Thomas Buoyant spoons from Basspro and it says: Recommended attachment to the line is by using a plain snap such as Duolock snap or a loop knot.
It says to use a duolock snap... Which is NOT a swivel. Or use a loop knot which is a knot,... not a swivel
That is a great lure caught 7 in a week w it and lost 4 that were hooked on 2 outings
This is great but sometimes I get hit right as it hits the surface with this lure. I’ll sometimes let it drop, sometimes not. It’s a good idea to switch it up because I’m sure I would have lost a couple fish if I always let it drop. Also another good addition to these lures is red hooks.
Yep,j definitely agree.
This video came together so smooth lol with the fish biting on cue and everything. I have this lure, but haven't gotten any bites. But I also didnt know how to fish it lol. I'm going to use your method and report back!
Just remember that if the fish aren't there at all your chances are 0 so you need to make sure that it's a good spot to fish to begin with. Once you know there are fish or likely are fish there then it's all a matter of depth to get the lure in front of them retrieval speed and color to attract their attention. It might look easy but what you're seeing is a combination of factors to get them to bite. If you combo up those things you will definitely get some hits on that lure good luck out there
great video, although IDK if that is "reeling slow" but it does fall under "slower" :)
A slow reel is relative to the current you are reeling against or with. What looks like a fast retrieve might actually be pretty slow. The lure speed dictates how fast you're actually going, not the speed that you're spinning the reel handle
Hey andrew you use thomas spinners? If so could you explain how to use them effectively? EPF swears they catch everything, and ive got some follows, but still haven't caught any on that Thomas E.P series. Im trying to learn every lure i can, and spinners are up on my list. one ive just pushed away.
Thomas spinners are not very well built I must admit. As much as I am a fan of their spoons they haven't dialed in their spinners at all. I feel like they can do a lot better. I own all the spinners they make but I rarely use them because there are better spinners out there. I tend to stick with panther martins... At times I can put a rooster tail on there or a blue fox. There are other brands I have that are pretty effective also. But overall panther martins are the best.
@@TroutWest Any tips you could share on fishing them? I believe its the same concept and idea as a spoon right! Sometimes when i fish a panther martin i feel vibrations, so i slow it down when i do, im not sure if thats right.
Gonna try this lure this weekend! Thanks for the vid!
You're gonna do well.
I exclusively use Thomas Buoyant spoons. Rainbow is my go to. However I always use a swivel. Can’t stand twisted line.
Line twist is caused by a combination of line and the reel you use. I never get line twist tying directly on. The only time it's possible is when trolling a Thomas lure over a long distance. Try changing out your line to izorline xxx 2lb and a daiwa legalis 1000 reel. Report back if you have line twist.
Does the line ever snap when tied directly on?..ive had that happen to me with kastmasters with no swivel
@@TroutWest I really enjoy that confidence in your fishing. Reminds me of the answers i give at the gym when it comes to weightlifting.
Learning from the master!
Would you let that drop as deep in a lake that has a lot of weeds?
You can...but it's the entire water column is then no. But if the top layer is weed free you can. Here's an example of that. ua-cam.com/video/t_eXDBpOecs/v-deo.html
After a bit of a dry spell on lures since late last year, got a trout on the 1/6th oz Rainbow Trout color today. It was my first time tying one on, directly to 10lb braid believe it or not. Would normally use a stealthy leader, but I had just broken off some fluoro. I was really impressed with the erratic, darting action. I have tried the Cyclone style before and noticed it had more stable, consistent wobble.
Anyone try replacing the hook with a single point siwash?
I've replaced hooks on all my Thomas lures. Sometimes you can get more strikes with a smaller hook.
Do these twist the line like a Pheobee or Little Cleo
They can twist the line if you troll with them without a swivel but if you're just casting and retrieving they don't do that at all.
Cool picked up one but haven’t had a chance to try it out yet. What size line do you use?
BlackguppyRAW 2lb izorline xxx in green. Any 2lb mono works
Does the 1/4 size work well too?
It works very well just not as good on the smaller fish but anything above 2 lb will still hit the quarter ounce.
Thanks for the info
How do these spoons work out in a creek?
They work great. You just have to have the right water flow and depth. Also depends on the size of the fish you're targeting.
What knot works best on this? Thanks.
He's using a loop knot most likely but he's tying directly. Thomas recommends using a snap, I personally use a split ring with a polymar knot.
What ever knot you're comfortable using. Really doesn't matter
Thomas only recommends a swivel for quick lure changes. Has nothing to do with tying a knot or function of the lure. It's designed to perform as it comes from the package
What lb line you using and what size bouyany
I only use 2lb Izorline.
Urban Outdoorsman with what knot
Is that the 1/6 ?
Always 1/6th
what size spoon was this buoyant? 1/6oz?
Yep 1/6
What knot do you use?
Omg my husband has been on a frantic issue about these trying everyone and his issue is using a swivel lol he assumed it wrong. You can if u give it a good jerk it swirls but I’m gonna make him be swivel less 😂
@@karensusee5010 swivel is important if you're trolling these spoons 👍
What type of knot do you use to tie on the lure?
Double overhand knot. Or blood knot depending on the mood
palomor
Congrats on the 1k.
BlackguppyRAW thank you!! Only took 9 years lol
Urban Outdoorsman what you are doing on the channel is great! I like your “where to fish series”. I’m your average fisherman and can use all the tips available. For the past couple weeks I went to Silverwood and Perris for nothing. Going to try Skinner this weekend hopefully catch some bluegill.
BlackguppyRAW Send me an email at Roadtripvidz@ Gmail and I'll give you some tips on Silverwood
Can we all email u😁
Pretty good! Thank you...
Welcome!
Great lure!!
I visit the Navajo Nation often! You ever fish wheatfield??

1/6th OZ
what lake is this?
Panguitch Lake,UT
That's slow and steady?
@@Luke-zu4xg For that depth of water. Yes.
@@TroutWest I have no idea I don't fish that deep, I was truly curious!
Tied it straight to the lure and it twisted my line. But I caught one using your tips.
Make sure you're using two pound test especially high quality line like izorline xxx. Twisting line is a sign of a lot of memory in the line you are using. High memory line isn't recommended for lightweight spoons. You will definitely keep catching using these lures
Yeah see I didnt know that. I was using eagle claw 8lb line. But I'll try something lighter. And of course. These spoons WORK. I've even caught tiger musky with the small and big Thomas lure spoons
What lake?
CrossBow206 this was Panguitch lake
Thought so just wasn't sure
Yep!!
@@TroutWest I'm headed to otter Creek next weekend.. any advice? I've never watched a video on the buoyant, been my secret weapon for about 20 years!
@@E_redd get a boat.. fish are deeper. The deeper portions near the dam are your best bet this time of year. If you're fishing the shoreline fish the point near the picnic area or along the day use area. Cast far...let it sink to bottom. Pop off the bottom retrieve super slow. Fish very early or just before sunset
AwSoMe 👍🏻
Always use a swivel or leader for pike cuz those mfs jus bite it off 💀
Not a fan of this swivel... But yeah definitely. If you're fishing Pike you should probably use it and a braided leader.
first like lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
