Curing the E92 M3 Throttle Actuator Failure Problem

- We've dealt with hundreds if not thousands of E9x M3's in our time, and generally they are pretty reliable. However one main fault we see is Throttle Actuator failure. This isn't fatal like Rod Bearing failure, however it is certainly an inconvenience especially if you're on a big trip or only use the car on the odd special occasion.
Our car falls in to that special occasion category, and as such we want to make sure when we take it out that it's not going to have the failure, stopping us from fully enjoying the car.
With that we now offer our own upgraded Throttle Actuators! These come with a lifetime warranty we're that confident that you'll never have to worry about them failing again.

Fairly straight forward remove and replacement. I have about 131K mile on the clock and am not sure if this was ever done. Yup mine went out about 3 weeks ago around 90k miles! Had them both replaced, running like new again! Had the Rod bearings done a while back as well

i judge a mechanic (apart from the task at hand) by how well he cleans up his work afterwards....hate having my car returned with grubby grease marks all over. this guy is meticulous no shortcuts

Our priority would always be Rod Bearings first as that failure is fatal. Throttle Actuators can fail and they cause no damage just inconvenience.

@@eastoakland-S65feen Thanks, its an e92, dinan exhaust, intake. Very well taken care of. She's a beast of car! Had a maintenance log with it. I got lucky I think....also came with magnaflow xpipe with both cats deleted and a tune....putting that back on this weekend.

Hi there. What are the symptoms that the car shows when the actuators are damaged?

Is this solely to stop limp mode or is it related to hesitation at low revs as well? Have an E90 325i experiencing these issues. Very rarely the revs falter on start up, and drop enough to cut the engine.
Wondering if BMW changed the specs of the actuators with the LCI or the issue is the same for the whole generation. And is there any way to prevent it? Using the car more often as an example..
An easy job to do just not cheap i imagine. I really want a red E90 or 92 M3 next. Love Japan red but don't mind Melbourne either.
If you’re competent with tools you could do this yourself definitely.

The matte carbon eventuri plennum looks incredible I like it alot more than the gloss.
We prefer it but purely personal preference.
Matches better with the other plastics in the engine bay
I couldn’t decide 😳 I ordered matte and then 12 hours later called them to change to gloss. I’m totally 50/50 I suppose they are both equally as nice 👍
@@sanmarino_cs1698 My vote is for matte. Both do look incredible. I like the subtlety of the matte. But of course do what you like the best.
nomnomguy680 I think matte is arguably nicer and more classy/OEM but if I had to criticise it for anything it would be perhaps it looks too much like the stock one for unless the camera is focused on the weave close up.
Hi. I am hein from south africa.i have a '01 e39 M5 with 314 000km on it.wonderfull car.does this cars have the same problem as your red M3. I only replaced a few things on the car.nothing big.still factory clutch and replaced front brake disc twice and back once and normal services.thanks.

Whats the cost to change them on a 2009 M3?
Hey guys - my 2011 dct m3 seemed to lose power at 3,000 rpm today.. I was pulling off in second gear and it felt like the car shunted forward and lost power for a few seconds before continuing. No engine lights or anything and seems ok right now but I am concerned - is that a sign of the throttle actuator problems?
The best way I can describe it was it lunging as if I hit the redline at 3,000 rpm and the acceleration cut out abruptly before continuing.

My 2011 M3 has 110k miles - all by me - of which 15k are track miles, and the rest are hard road miles, as it is purely a fun car. Rod bearings and throttle actuator have been faultless. Both just changed at 110k miles as a precautionary measure, but inspection does not show imminent failure. How you use and maintain the car matters a lot.
Definitely! If you’ve owned the car from new and looked after it then you can be much more confident in the condition of your bearings.

Hi. I'm not getting fuel to cylinders 1 to 4.
I've reset codes and engine runs fine for a bit then goes back into limp mode.
Could it be a failed bank1 actuator?

That project has been continuing, until we have access to a G8x M3/4 to 3D scan we can’t go much further! Designs are pretty much finalised.

My Dealership is currently working on my car for other issues, issues where my E92 M3 Comp pack is shutting off/blacking out randomly when driving. But they are telling me that my throttle actuators are failing and it will cost 3,500 to do the job. Talk about theft LOL. I would assume I could take my M3 to one of your shop dealers in California and they can handle this mess and at the same time be more cost efficient and have a piece of mind?

mpowermotorsports has a similar offering with warranty. $360 a pop after you exchange your TA's. Not trying to bash evolve, but you may be able to save quite a bit if you're stateside.
Get them from M Power Motorsports if you live in the states.
What causes them to fail? Shit quality or the heat generated where there mounted?
Electronics fail and gears inside can wear down and strip.

I have a 2008 Melbourne racing red sedan and I have gotten my actuator valves replaced at 50000km for about 4000 dollars at the dealership
You got robbed. Today the TVAs are only $600-700 each. They used to cost $1400 each. Labor at the BMW Dealership was 5 hours @ $200/hr. UK-Rebuilt TVAs were/are on the market for years, similar to these Evolve TVAs. They should never fail.

Got a E92 M3 , Rod Bearings done and 1 of the Throttle changed, car pulls great and doesn't feel like any problem, latelly i got a Battery error that it stays but after that i suddendly get the car with Engine Fault, Stability failure and Flat Tyre error, do you guys know if this is associated majorly with the battery? Because the car is smooth engine sounds great and i don't feel any downpower, just when that engine fault limp mode hits the car can't go past 4k RPM so i guess some sensor or low energy associated? Could you guys get me some insight? Best regards!
These cars do suffer when the battery is in poor condition/voltage is low. I would fix the battery error first and go from there.

They are the same unit. If you buy it for the m3 it should go right in no problem for the m5 brother. I have a e92 m3 as well and the plug for the unit looks the same on the m5 I believe

That's our usual advice but if going on a roadtrip (remember those?) it would be a massive shame to have them fail midway.
Or in our case this car is pretty rarely used if we're honest, and when we do take it out we don't want to have them fail!
