The cognitive dissonance between the moviemaker's message of preserving lions in the wild while simultaneously treating them like pets and needlessly endangering the lions, the crew, and his own family. While I can appreciate the passion this movie should be a warning, not something to admired.
Well the film bombed, ruined a marriage, and everyone got hurt so I think he learned his lesson.
Saw this in a packed theatre at a 24-hour B-movie festival in 2015 and it was fucking nuts. Nobody was prepared for it, least of all me. Once it became clear that they had no control over the animals and nobody was actually "acting" the theater was a screamfest every time the lions tackled someone or gnawed on Noel's head. Once it was over and the next movie started and the MGM lion popped up everyone screamed at that too! The greatest movie theater experience I've ever had.
"When the MGM lion roared..." when I read That ... LOL.
😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅
I feel like you said "but then things got worse" at least three times and I couldn't believe it. Incredible nobody got killed and it was actually finished.
Robbie got killed.
Lions, lions and more lions is the best name ever
this
TG more like lions, lions, and more lions, and tigers, and cougars, and cheetahs, and jaguars... oh and an elephant.
Lions, Tigers, Cheetahs, and an Elephant for good measure, ohhhh my!
This is terrifying, just another reminder why exotic animal laws exist.
Or, considering how old Hedren and Doris Day both are, an argument for animal bonding.
John: "Why did you get tiger cubs? Tigers aren't even in Africa."
Noel: "Yeah, but they're so cute!"
Heh!
13:56 "Every Cast member suffered some kind of Injury. Except for Matibo. He was the only one, who refused, to pal (?) around with the Animals."
Seeing, how it turned out for him, wasn't the worst Idea.
I know that's right.
Matibo!
The title of the film should be:
Matibo: The Only Person In This Film With Some Common Sense!
I can't believe no one died.
He was quoted as saying, "I think I've seen this movie before, and I know who dies first." :/
D Sandoval
🤣🤣🤣
HOLY CRAP. That must have been an insane experience. I'm so glad there's no way something like this could be done today
Holy dawg what a crazy experience 😺😺😺😺
Tiger and Cheetah cubs almost like bigger versions of housecats
Indeed. Too risky. Lions are majestic and beautiful creatures, but they are still wild animals and VERY dangerous.
Shit like this still happens
Well, I suppose there could be a reboot. Lions and tigers are far from extinct as there is no shortage of imbeciles in California. Back home in Africa we're slightly more... "conservative", when it comes to the big cat. Give you an example: when you were a dumb kid, got dead-drunk and decided to pass water behind a giant baobab tree, while taking "an evening safari"... wanna know the best method to get instantly sober? When you notice that there's a lion (who sleep on Baobab trees), not to far from where you're taking a piss. It's quite a sensation, I can assure you...
Roar means "I love you" in lion
....or "I'm going to eat you"...
I forget which
it think it depends on if the lion has eaten that day
I think it comes down to the eyes. Do they look half closed like he's about to sleep, or, are they wide open staring at you without blinking or braking gaze?
If it's the latter I think you need to find religion REAL quick.
It means "i love my food"
Actually, it typically means "go away", either for them assuming you're trying to encroach on their territory or steal their food.
It also means "this is my home" if it's not directed at anyone in particular and the roar is less angry and more like a note being repeated over and over again.
It's a synonymous expression. "I love deer", for example. Especially with brown mushroom sauce, basil, dumplings and cranberries, plus perhaps a piece of pear...
If you've ever heard a lion roar in person, it's loud and terrifying. That scene at the end when those lions were fighting above them on the stairs was chilling and could have turned lethal.
Unique movie yes, but also borderline suicidal. Anybody with with half a brain knows dealing with that many big cats you know people are going to get hurt. They were lucky not to have manslaughter charges over them. Passion is good, but passion over your loved ones safety is wrons.
Roger Morris
True. Passion is a good thing, but try to use caution in where it leaves you.
Doesn't someone need to be slaughtered in order to be charged for manslaughter?
Questionable?: The very fact no one was killed is the reason I said they were lucky not to have a manslaughter charges over them. Having 100 plus wild big cats running loose is an obvious danger.
Roger Morris its wrons indeed
@@randombro89 Very very wrons
Lmao!! The first time a statement such as "the most dangerous movie ever made" is an understatement
Mativo was the only one with a brain.
It's Funny but of course the Black guy was like hell no!!! Of course he came out with no injuries.
Jay-zus wept!!
These people literally stared almost every kind of disaster right in the eye and were like "You know what, fuuuuuck you! We're still doing this.".
I have seen *Born Free* - Which is about a couple who adopt ONE lion cub ( 'Elsa' ) and it's a lovely, moving story, about personal commitment to nature, and finding your own truth by doing so...
But, THIS movie *Roar*
should have been renamed *Born Stupid*
I've seen a documentary of this film but you went deeper. Well done. This film was an insane idea.
Just watching this exploring video made me so uncomfortable and itchy and anxious! The fact that they involved their children should be cause for removal of the kids from the home!! Such a crazy, reckless and damned dangerous thing to do for years and years and years... no respect for these animals that are used to VAST ranges of space to move around in!! Instead they have massive cats cooped up in that stupid wooden house. What utter suicidal lunacy. And the poor kids!
Wow. You really outdid yourself with this one, Cees! A quintessential GBF Exploring segment. Well done, sir! Bravo! Or should I say...5 ROARS! ;)
*i love this channel so much!*
being introduced to movies i've never heard of, but now i MUST see- as well as favorites that deserve a rewatch (or 10), is kind of overwhelming but i love it. thank you for your passion and dedication in bringing these movies to the forefront. i look forward to every new video, wondering where you'll go next. with today's ROAR...
i am truly stunned that this movie was completed without anyone getting killed. like, completely mystified. over 100 large wildcats?? it's amazing they all got through it, scratches/bites/broken bones and all.
thanks again! :)
Yeah he is pretty great at what he does isn't he? :)
They were just stupid and lucky.
many of the cats were raised when they were young, but them just playing around, cranky and the result of just their roughhousing were constant deep injuries, stitches and trips to the hospital.
They have a death wish as these cats could have killed them if they wanted to.
Big cats are not pets, actors or entertainers.
You can’t tame hundreds of thousands of years of predatory instinct and evolution like that and decide to have them near kids as well.
Heck even zoo staff who with years of training, experience taking care of lions and tigers have been attacked and had bad injuries.
Humans have bred cannides to be a specific breed of dog and that took thousands of years to do.
They have no respect when it comes to wild animals.
Another film that would never be made in this day age. I'm all in favour of people being free to act as they please but this needed to be stopped by someone in charge.
It's crazy!
Unfortunately, the only sane person, was Matibo. He was probably thinking to himself "These crazy ass white people..."
It's rare for the making of a film to be more terrifying than the film itself.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was a kid (I live in Mexico and also, ratings for movies were rarely enforced until a few years ago)
I remember that this movie scared me, I do remember many scenes but not the overall plot. In Mexico it was called "El Gran Rugido" so more or less Roar :)
My family used to own a pet and exotic animals and I got to expend a lot of time (at home and at the shop) with big cats suchs as lions, tigers, cheeta, cougar, panther and the like, you can really make a bond with them but it's better never to forget that they have way more strenght than you and thicker skin so what for them is a friendly pawn or playful bite for you is a bleeding injury =)
I would love to see this movie again, thanks for another awesome video!! I'll catch you on twitter
WOW its like if dinosaur were still here and they used them in Jurassic Park LOL
Careful what you wish for.
lol seriously! crazy
Or made Jaws using real Great Whites.
Honestly if they made a movie starring Will Ferrell as Noel making fun of how dangerous it was that would be a hit movie
Really love how you go into detail about the production of the films instead of just being sarcastic and mocking the film like so many other film reviewers.
And Tippi Hedren said Alfred Hitchcock was a nightmare to work with!
That's cause he was a dirty old pervert who kept hitting on her and she said no. Her gave Melanie a doll of her mom in a coffin, talk about creepy.
I feel like Mativo earned one hell of an "I told you so".
Holy crap! What a roller coaster ride for this film. Utter insanity but true devotion and commitment. As someone who has always had a love of big cats, and a staunch supporter of animal and wildlife preservation, I commend them for their efforts.
Awesome episode, one of your best.
I noticed this movie recently on Amazon. I didn't really look at it, but I had assumed it was a new production. Now I need to watch it.
This was great.
Wow I recently made a video about this movie, but not nearly as in depth as this. Incredible stuff!
First, I would like to say Cecil, great amazing job as always. You always provide insightful intriguing, and sometimes hilarious commentary to films that we either have always loved or maybe have never heard about. You are fab! The film: Maybe they started out with a noble intention, but they were still trying to profit from the animals. The fact that they allowed them to multiply and didn't provide them with the outdoor space and food they needed, shows a real dangerous precedent. Animal conservation? Give me a break. This angers me so much. They break every rule when it comes to actually caring for and raising "wild" animals. It should not be done to begin with unless they are properly educated, have the proper space and resources, and are taking in animals that would not otherwise have survived without intervention. Not for some movie project. Might as well be a circus. I don't mean to go off on a soapbox but this stuff just angers me. Not only are the animals in danger, but so many people and for what? Never turn your back on a cat. Even domestic cats still have some of this in their genes. Your kitty may do the same. Not maybe to the same result, but it is instinct. You give them the back of your neck and you are prey. That is one of two ways cats subdue their prey/food. By constantly getting bitten and bloodied, they exponentially created more bloodlust in the animals. What a bunch of a-holes. But great job by you of course. LOL
This is the Jumanji remake we deserved.
The whole production from the get go was founded on utter lunacy. The saying "they don't make 'em like they used to" has never been so appropriate.
12:51 Exactly, this video made my freaking skin crawl! Which is something that all these hybrid live-action/cg cartoon movies can never do
I’ve been your avid viewer since the beginning, but this one takes the cake! Amazing video.
This is maybe the tensest movie watching experience I've ever had. I spent the entire runtime feeling that I may watch someone get eaten by a lion any second. Even watching this review freaked me out a little.
"....there will never be a movie like Roar again".
Never say never. There will someone that stupid to do it again.
Probably with sharks.
Most definitely with sharks.
Sharks do not have a family instinct like cats. They are loners, and actually pretty stupid. So no, not sharks.
Or Black Mambas.
Ive been waiting for you to make a vid on this. This is one bat shit crazy movie. Would never have been made today. A child of the 80s.
SuperPineapplejones *Child of the 70s. Not even in the 80s would this idea fly
Have you seen Savage Harvest?
Thank you! This was fascinating! Will have to look this up. I recall a few times in the early 80s, where I rode my motorcycle along Soledad Canyon Road, near Shambala, being surprised to see an elephant grazing in a field. I moved to the area a few years later, but never visited the compound.
Wow! What a fantastic story! Great Job, Cecil.
Forget a Serbian film and August Underground Mordum this is the scariest thing ever put to film. A true Gem ordering my copy tomorrow.
This was truly the craziest most dangerous thing I’ve ever seen on film. It’s amazing that multiple people weren’t mauled to death or that the animals didn’t kill each other. It’s stressful to watch too because you see people getting hurt and you’re just waiting for one to snap and the others fall suite tearing someone apart. Batshit crazy but oddly fascinating
I discovered your channel three days ago. Since then, I've watched fifty to sixty ( estimated ) different reviews / explanations.
Highly enjoyed them all, and subscribed. Surely you must have attended a film school, or at the very least a script writing workshop.
Your analysis is often concise and precise. Repeatedly tearing strips off the Weinstein monsters - way before the public revelations - is the cherry on top.
Congratulations from Seddon, Australia.
I saw this originally in the early 80s. Released in Ireland has a PG kids movie. Saturday afternoon matinee. I guess I was too young to appreciate how dangerous it was at the time.
Melanie Griffith grew up with lions and tigers. They should make a movie about that.
Also: That brother's reaction is absolutely priceless.
I got the Book 'The Cats of Shambala' from a library sale and it talks about the movie and the sanctuary. The risks they took are staggering. Turning this place into a sanctuary was a much smarter move. These animals are beautiful but should be admired at a safe distance!
And this is why no normal person one should take life advice from Hollywood people.
Fat Tiger :D .
Actually the moral of the story is , don't be afraid to dare to dream or take leaps of faith off of a Lions head
Joe Vector very good!!!
That and Hollywood is filled with people that are trained to lie and deceive you. (acting)
Kind of like Washinton D.C.
That's not how acting works. Go back to your swamp!
'The lions kept mating while they were trying to get funding' - that made me laugh for some reason
excellent video! never heard of this film, but I am fascinated by its production. thank you. is there a doc made about the production?
Great video. I have been fascinated with this movie since I caught the trailer online with the re-release in 2015.
Wow the story surrounding this movie is amazing...
Jesus this entire thing was a nightmare. One of my favorite videos you have put together. The exploring videos are by far my favorite.
I did some research on the Australian release where it was contractually obliged to release in first. My favourite quote about the movie was in an interview in a magazine "from the waist up I was Tippi Hedren, but from the waist-down I was a leopard".
It ill be fine, its a movie about kittens.
Kittens that'll bite your head off.
It's fine. I'm fine. It's fine. It's all fine. I'm fine.
Large... Wild... Lethal... Deadly... Fear-smelling... Predatory kittens that want to kill you and eat you.
That's HILARIOUS. I will never look at my two kittens I just adopted the same way.
Seriously though, while I can understand having an exotic animal, this is going a bit too far. Didn't they think of getting them neutered or spayed? What did they think was going to happen? I'm surprised that they were allowed to do this because it's putting a lot at risk, the humans and the animals because as much as I like Lions and other wild cats, it doesn't seem right to raise them in captivity or so many of them because they do have a wild nature. Hell, people flip out if you domesticate a wolf or half wolf because every so often you hear of one turning on their owner. I would love to have a Lioness and think it would be cool, but I wouldn't because it doesn't seem to me to be the best thing for the Lioness. I do like the idea of having a sanctuary for them though and am glad that she did that because people who have them then can no longer take care of them cannot just put them back into the wild, they cannot survive.
One thing I would do if I had the land and house for it would be to adopt one to save it from trophy hunters but it would be a cub, two probably of the same gender so they would not go extinct. To hunt any animal to extinction is something I find very sick.
I have a new found respect for Melanie Griffin now.
iam16bits Domesticated kittens will also do that too. They are just smaller, can't cause as much damage and are kind of cute when they try.
The guy who was smart enough to avoid the dangerous animals was the only one who wasent hurt by them.
Holy hot damm i am gonna need to track this down, this kind of stuff is why i follow this channel.
Wow, the whole movie is on youtube and has been on my "watch later" list since summer but I had no idea about any of this. Definitely watching tonight. Incredible stuff, probably my favorite Explore yet and I love this whole series.
This is such great work! This is one of my favorite videos so far.
This is just insane. In every way insane. I didn't even finish your video yet but felt compelled to comment.
This gave me so much anxiety
Le Croissant I know right?
I had to stop watching around 7 minutes in.
I can sympathize. Just watching clips from this movie practically turns my hair white.
Honestly, the story behind production of "Roar" would make for a more interesting movie than the movie itself.
It feels so unreal. It's luck that they managed to raise ONE lion that they could control. But several tens of big wild cats? Do these people even realize their gigantic amount of luck they had? One famous Russian family tried to do something similar and the second lion they raised already turned on them.
5 Roars to this video!!!
They showed this flick in Motelx a couple years ago to a full packed theatre audience. We had the DP of the movie giving us an introduction to contextualise which made the viewing even more scarier.
Amazing film for so many reasons.
"I WANT LIONS!"
Famous last words.
It’s like nature itself tried to stop this film
A great breakdown of a complicated film history!
I love this channel ... Your explorong series are the best in youtube
This gave me chills. Sounds like a real horror production with the constant fear of the big cats. I'm impressed with their determination for the project though!
This is why this is favorite channel.
Great vid, LOVE it!
Could you consider the Howling-series next for the movie-vids? That would be so awesome! :-)
Absolutely fascinating, well done mate.
Great vid! I first come across this movie via Welcome to the Basement's take on it and thought it was bonkers but your video exploring it in more detail has made the craziness of it even more startling. It really was a product of it time, you could never do anything like this now. I can kind of feel for Noel but d@mn that last bit with all the roaring.....nope.
Not to mention the way Hitchcock blacklisted Tippi after she refused his advances. Great video btw!
Thank you so much for your videos. They are amazing!!!!
This is why I follow and support this channel.
You got to give that dude credit Cecil, he risked everything to make this movie. Well, I'm glad for him that the movie was completed and, despite everything that had happened, the movie was release. That final quote was an excellent way to end the video Cecil because no one will even try making a film like this again.
This whole episode was pretty fascinating. Good job GBF.
Found this episode quite emotional actually
I can certainly see the appeal in lions and tiger, but I have been a cat owner for two thirds of my life and considering all the havoc my tiny farm cat can cause I can't believe they did not realise this was a disaster waiting to happen.
Fascinating stuff! Seen this movie around, but never took the time to watch it. Still looking forward to your exploration of Maniac Cop 3!
Definitely the best "Exploring" video yet. More people need to know about this.
Occasionally I work as a set medic, so this film is a living nightmare! If I worked that set, I'd have PTSD within the first week!
If you take requests, you've gotta do the movie(s) "The Gate" and "Primer". The gate involves a kid that open a gate to hell in his backyard and Primer is a time travel indie movie that should have a warning label stating, "must be watched more than once"
Jesus, this is a horrific experience to endure. It definitely shows that no matter how domesticated an animal can be made into, they are still a dangerous wild animal by nature. Tremendous job covering this one, Cecil!
They could make a movie about the production of the film.
you make boring movies seem interesting and for that we thank you ...
I wasn't going to watch this but I got hooked. Wow!
Not gonna lie i want to see a disaster artist, Ed wood-like movie about the behind the scenes drama of this film. It would be fucking insane!
A movie about the making of this movie would be quite the experience
Really good video, keep it up
Great video as usual! Talk about a genuine horror show of a production.
Great video! I'd never heard of this insane project.
This movie sounds INSANE! What a crazy behind-the-scenes story!😨
this channel.... its like crack
fulanitoflyer
Everytime I try to look away and just go to sleep, another video pulls me in again!
Plus I've already watched at least 3 movies I would never have seen without this channel. Studios should be paying him.
Klm49 damn right!
I watched Bad Channels and I Come In Peace because of Good Bad Flicks and I loved em!
This is why we have house cats. When they accidentally scratch or bite you, death or serious injury is very rare. I didn't know about this insane project, very scary!
funzjag
Cats still have their predatory instincts ingrained and technically are not completely domesticated like dogs, as they were not picked and bred from the start for a specific behavior, hence they still are able to hunt independently and perhaps the reason they seem more aloof. ( “domestic” cats are responsible for killing millions of birds)
Those are just house cats, let alone lions and tigers.
It took thousands of years of domestication and breeding of specific cats and dogs, and some people don;t realize this thinking they could tame other wild animals.
Fascinating for real brother. I'm going to have to see this asap
we need a movie about the making of this movie, like "Distaster Artist" style.
i have this film, watched 10 minutes and thought..."is this a good bad flick" ...and sure enough. This film is a very uncomfortable view, it's like watching Free Solo, except instead of falling, I keep expecting a actor to be torn to pieces.
What an amazing story. GOOD JOB!
Wow what a story, I had no idea this movie even existed. Amazing job man
How have I never heard of this movie!!! I gotta give it a watch.... I have to!!!
