good old studio system. "we love your movie, just change everything about it"
I love how Hollywood hasn't listened to these directors and force changes and then they wonder why these movies suck and bomb.
exactly!!! I saw this on cable years ago and thought it was entertaining, but didn't know of the trouble it went through at the time
DrQuagmire1 the theatrical version is okay but yeah I'm sure it could be better.
Fucking Weinsteins
Robert yeah but now he is pretty much getting owned by everyone for being a sleezebag
Well at least we don't have to worry about Harvey ruining any more movies so that's a plus!
invaderhim23 Fucking Weinsteins.
Yeah but I think we're going to have a few more stories of recently-released flops that may not have been so bad has he not stuck his fat fingers into the directors business.
Everyone now knows him from his current bullshit but before all that I hated him for how he ruined almost every foreign movie Miramax distributed. Luckily now you can easily import the proper versions but back then it wasn't so easy and all you got was chopped up edited crap.
No, he's too busy ruining lives instead of movies. Fat fucking pervert. Hope he and the rest of the liberal sexual predators all burn in hell.
+alucard624 get out of here with your political crap
Every time I recommend this movie to people, I make it abundantly clear that they need to get the director's cut. Also, I'd say that getting to throw darts at Ben Affleck is the definition of a perfect Christmas. 😏
I remember the older video you did for Reindeer Games from years back before it got taken down, great job expanding on the film Cecil :)
Keep these coming, please. The positivity, passion and genuine interest expressed for these movies are so apparent, they become contagious.
Lots more on the way! :)
Very underrated movie as far as the director's cut . Great retrospective review :-)
One of my friend's buddies, John, operates the reels for the Angelica in Plano when the Bourne Identity was released. It was one of the "select" theaters that was going to do an early release, with some of the cast and production team attending the release. Among them was Matt Damon. So John met Matt Damon before the screening, and Matt asked him if he got a chance to watch the film when he was testing the reels the previous night.
Without blinking an eye, John told Matt Damon, "Yeah, it was all right. I mean, it was no Reindeer Games, but I guess it was good."
Christmas day and a video from Good Bad Flicks, my day is made!!! Happy Christmas to all.
This is one of those reviews I actually feel grateful for. Thank you for making this.
So I have a funny story about throwing darts at Ben Affleck. I worked at Blockbuster when Pearl Harbor came out. Reindeer Games had already come and gone and we were headed straight into peak Ben Affleck hate. When the poster for the movie arrived for promotion, me and a coworker thought Blockbuster wouldn’t care for Pearl Harbor since it didn’t do so well so we hung the poster up and took every sharp object in the building and tried to hit a specific marker on Ben’s hat. Everything on Ben Affleck’s face was mangled except for that little marker on the hat, Blockbuster was pissed, and me and the other coworker were never allowed to work together again. I still can’t believe we never hit that marker once.
Dude, this is awesome. I'm one of your $5 Patreon supporters and I never thought you would do Reindeer Games. I lived in Prince George at the time of the filming. We had one of the few prisons in North America at the time that was unoccupied (a new one had been built next door) and we used that to snag another film earlier, Double Jeopardy. So when you say Vancouver and British Columbia, remember that Vancouver IS in BC and the other shooting location in BC was Prince George. The scene at the diner was shot locally, as was the scenes with them in front of "Michigan Fine Foods", which was actually Save On. They selected us because of our snow, but we didn't have much of it that year. Frankenheimer cast several locals, including one of my friends, though later promoting him as a director's asisstant for the time in Prince George. That would eventually see me waved on set, where I got to meet Clarence Williams, Danny Trejo, and Ben Affleck. I also got to see John Frankenheimer, but was not introduced. They also employed a local Denny's and a Sandman hotel for several scenes. It was awesome. Our local film board scored another success not long after when we got Dreamcatcher. I never said these films were any good. :)
I love this '' exploring'' series, I even watch for films I never heard of lol. Keep up the great work and happy new year.
I knew they cut out material, im off to see the directors cut
DaGroundUnder I own the director's cut. It's definitely a lot better than the theatrical cut.
Now I want to know more about that dr Moreau film
Watch the documentary that he mentioned. Its really informative and good.
^^^ it's so goddamn good. that whole production was such a shitshow
And Stanley's original script is available online. Its great
I can concur, the documentary is fantastic. I would say one of my favorite parts is the section that shows us that Richard Stanley ended up in the movie as an extra wearing a mask so no one knew it was him except for a very select few.
Thanks for bringing the documentary to my attention!
Here's the wiki page, in case anyone else missed the title:

I remember watching this as a kid and loving it ..
Merry Christmas GBF
I love these videos! Keep 'em coming!
Merry Christmas Cecil and thank you for this video💖
Watched the director’s cut of Reindeer Games for this Christmas and found myself enjoying it for what it was
Glad you enjoyed it!
Marry Christmas Cecil. Thank you for all the great commentary.
Alien 3 is another perfect example that the directors cut is better. I never understood the hate that film got until I realized people were referring to the theatrical cut, which I’ve never seen. It’s actually my favorite film in the franchise. The characters development is awesome.
Merry Christmas Cecil! Hope you and your family have an amazing holiday🎄
I love this movie and now knowing there is an even cut, I cannot wait to see it again.
Ronin is one of my favorite films of all time.
The DVD commentary from Frankenheimer is like going to film school. It's worth a buy for talk about composition, lenses and lighting alone.
...after watching this episode I just had to see this movie (director's cut obviously) and I gotta say I really, really enjoyed it. Automatically added to my Christmas watchlist
Awesome!
Always enjoy your Exploring series. Have a merry Christmas buddy and keep up the good work!
now THIS is a nostalgia trip. I love this movie.
Glad i caught this review. I passed on this movie back in the day but just saw the directors cut. It was fun.
John Frankenheimer is probably my favorite director. "Ronin" and "The Train" are so damn great, and all his films are at least worth watching even if you don't like the genre, but I think every one of his films are good.
Merry Christmas Cecil! Looking forward to your favorite movies list.
Agreed, the directors cut is the only way to see this movie. It’s a favourite for many years of mine
Bathed In Torment it feel alike a totally different film. An actual good film no less unlike the theatrical release.
Fun fact: Frankenheimer was originally set to direct “Exorcist: the beginning” (2004) but his declining health forced him to step down and he subsequently died.
YAY!! we got it this year!
I saw the theatrical cut on cable and thought it was interesting enough to watch it on dvd. Though I thought it was just badly cut for TV as most movies are. I saw that there was a director's cut and bought that instead. I LOVE this movie. Heist movies are my favorite types of movie and this is a very smart, well put together film.
Would love to see an exploring Mimic. That film always caught my attention and would love to see an in depth look at the behind the scenes of it.
Cool. I'll watch this tonight. Thanks, Cecil.
Merry Xmas.
I bought the director's cut of the film on DVD while I was in Campbell almost a month ago. This will be my first time watching this film later tonight.
Unlike Disturbing Behavior which has yet to get it's Director's Cut, at least Reindeer Games got it's Director's Cut released.
MERRY CHRISTMAS GBF!!
Thank you I had no idea of a directors cut, ronin was great, also brought up his experience of his auto racing, now I'll look for directors cut of reindeer games
Never get tired of Ronin.. such good performances from all the cast.
A goodbadflicks upload? It's a christmas miracle!
Merry Christmas, Cecil!!! Excellent example of a holiday action thriller. Also, my Christmas wishlist: can you do Exploring on another Affleck movie Paycheck?
*I just found your channel. This is a really good video*
I need to see that director's cut! Such a star studded cast!
Cecil...thanks to you I spent like four hours listening to psychostick and now I have to go to work in two hours...my favorite song is mega man and dangerzone...but number one is Bruce Campbell
Ronin is amazing. It really holds up, and it was the last movie were my friends and me sat around discussing for hours
WOW man this was incredible good stuff
I never knew about the director's cut! Thanks for letting us know, I thought poor Frankenheimer lost it
Happy holidays!
Funny how UA-cam is so picky about which videos they deem ad-friendly. Yet I got a disgusting ad, showing someone having part of their (lung?) removed, due to excess smoking and or dipping.
I've yet to see Reindeer Games, but now that I know it's a really good movie and that the director's cut is the superior one, I will definitely check it out.
You should do an exploring of the mist and the toxic avenger! Love the series btw!!👍👍👍
Great review
Hey GBF! Thanks for another amazing video again :) just asking ¿Will we ever see a "exploring" video about "Ravenous" the 1998 terror movie?
I remember this was one of the last "Hot Box" movies I saw as a kid for free . I loved it at 14
Merry Christmas Cecil!
I really enjoy the Director's Cut, and watch it every year around Christmas
Sounds like the difference between the theatrical, and director's cut (VHS and Laserdisc) versions of The Lawnmower Man. Director cut changes the movie for the much better!
I’ve always loved the directors cut of Reindeer games. It’s one of my all time favorite guilty pleasures. “And some pecan f%#’n pie!”
reduce the run time and inject forced humor. Sounds like a recent Affleck movie.
J D Justice League?
LOL
*I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING AT THE THUMBNAIL*
I know I shouldn't because it's not even that funny but every time I see their facial expressions I crack up laughing
pretty good Christmas gift man
I only knew the theatrical cut....now i'm going to check the director's cut. Thx for this video!
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy it :)
Yes, y'all go and watch that Lost Soul documentary. Just watched it last week and it is amazingly interesting and entertaining!
The Director's Cut is available to rent on Amazon video right now.
would you do tremors since there is a 6 Part comming and 2015 we got part 5
i love those movies and micheal gross is kinda awesome
There's a part 6 coming?!
Merry Christmas Cecil
Hope you're gettin' better, Cecil. Please stream soon :D!
Robin was awesome, “what do you say to Santa’s little helpers? Thank you.”
*"THEY'RE ELVES!!!"* XD
one of my favorite movies ever
Exploring Slither please!! Great, underrated movie!
Merry Christmas good bad flicks whatever ur real name is
AEM Reviews Cecil
Cecil T. Robot
wstine79 how do you know that?
top notch again, I thoroughly enjoyed reindeer games the directors cut especially, a cool Christmas action flick. i loved the doc about Stanley's Dr Moreau, such studio hypocrisy and interference, plus the always entertaining Kilmer 'worst to work with' stories! BATMAN FOREVER.. FOREVER
Helicopter Kicks Frankenheimer is quoted as saying he wouldn't cast Kilmer in The Val Kilmer Story because of the issues he had with him on Moreau.
Came for Reindeer Games, got a little Ronin, one of my all time favorite action movies. Very nice.
Merry Christmas Cecil.
I bought the director's cut because of you and it is alot different. It reminds me of batman v superman dawn of justice ultimate edition. You miss out on alot of story and I'm about to revisit reindeer games director's cut because of this video. Love your channel.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the director's cut, it really changes the film drastically. Another one is Daredevil. Completely different film than the theatrical release.
@GoodBadFlicks I agree another good ben Affleck movie destroyed by the studio. I didn't care for the movie Daredevil until I watched the director's cut. I hope you do an explored retrospective on Daredevil in the future to show people what they missed the first time.
Love this movie!!!! Underrated for sure!!!!!
One of my favorite movies
I'll have to now see the directors cut as i never knew there was one
Frankenheimer is lucky to do something he loves to do.
I tried watching this back in the day and couldn't get into it lol. This explains why, they should just let directors go thru with their visions of what the film was supposed to be.
Always loved this movie, is uneasy, tongue in cheek, Affleck in what he does best: playing stupid, and its 14.822 twists!
John Frankenheimer was a pretty good director. Its a shame that his last theatrical released film was a bust and the producers ruined his vision.
One of my favorite movies by Frankenheimer is a 1989 action thriller called, "Dead Bang" about an LA deputy sheriff who uncovers a plot involving a neo nazi movement and arms trafficking. I think it's an underrated gem, with an engaging plot and personally recommend it.
Unlike Disturbing Behavior which has yet to get it's Director's Cut, at least Reindeer Games got it's Director's Cut released.
A lot of this movie was filmed in my hometown of Prince George, BC
Weinstein strikes again
Why can't he keep his hands off other people's property?
laughingalien he's down with o.p.p.
He's a filthy human being, but their company did a lot for delivering indie films to mainstream audiences, and positively influencing the artform in general. Terrible people accomplish net positive things all the time
What was his "positive influence on the artform"? He definitely ruined Gilliam's Brothers Grimm movie.
Also see the GoodBadFlicks look at The Crow: City of Angels. Weinstein fucked that up too.

Another film I think you should cover, (If you haven’t already) is “Kingdom of Heaven”. I hated the Theatrical cut and it wasn’t until a friend got me to see the Director’s Cut that I finally appreciated the film. (Like you’ve mentioned repeatedly in your videos, a lot of what was cut for the Theatrical release was important characterization!)
I loved Shaolin soccer! I noticed there was a difference between the subtitled and the english dubbed version. The english dubbed must be the studio edit, it's much shorter and doesn't make as much sense.
The English dub cut is a monstrosity compared to the original cut. Thankfully when they released it on dvd they included both versions.
I completely forgot the most of this film , I always thought the lead was incredibly stupidly written, but I remember the twist ending, so in that front it was effective.
I really like this movie. I didn't know it was so heavily edited.
afleck was the bomb in phantoms - jay n silent bob
motoX I love Matt and Ben's banter during good will hunting 2: hunting season at the end of Jay and silent bob strike back... "...and sometimes you do reindeer games." Haha.
Liev Schreiber played it well, too. A good Koontz screen adaptation.
Those movies was bombs too
@@justinpipes85 "see, that's just mean."
@@carleeelizabeth are you stoked for the reboot?
Just started reading "universal Harvester". the book mentions this film in the first five pages.
You should write in the description that this is remake of an old Good Bad Flicks episode. Also, you should've included the christmas-poem from the original video.
You should explore "Poltergeist 2 The other side", its very interesting how the film was unnecessary cut to became what we all know, a decent sequel that could be an incredible movie.
Scream 3 also suffered because of Miramax. Re-writes (weirdly enough by Ehren Krueger), shooting delays, etc. it's too bad that producers and studios ruin what they put out by altering what the artist intended. Also Merry Christmas!
Nice! Can you do a segment on Walter Hill’s Streets of Fire?
I think the only reason I watched this was the 'Directors Cut' label and the Frankenheimer name. I remember enjoying it.
Thanks for this video! I saw this in the theatre and absolutely hated it. I can't wait to see the director's cut, since that sounds like the movie I wanted to see in the first place!
The Building they used for the Casino was my Pre School and where my high school prom was held
Bah Humbug.
I haven't seen the movie in probably 15 years...but i remember liking it enough. but now that I know all of this, I will definitely be tracking down the DC version.
Could You Do An Exploring Episode On River's Edge (1986)?
Zack Regan I was going to watch that movie. Is it good?
River's Edge Is A Great Movie. It's Got Wonderfully Insane Performance's From Crispin Glover And Dennis Hopper, A Twisted Sense Of Humor
And A Great Soundtrack. (Four Slayer Songs!) One Of The Most Underrated Films Of The 1980's.
Thumbs up for anything Slayer!!
i love this film i sadly had to pawn my copy so i hope to get it again one day
