I agree with Ernie -- his death was pointless. The real surprise would have been if he HAD survived (much like in Deep Blue Sea's final twist, another fun movie).
I wonder if that is one of the secret rules of horror films that no one talks about. If you have more than one black actor in your horror movie chances go up that at least one will survive the entire thing.
Maybe you just have to be a rapper, and demand that they write a clause in your contract saying that they can't kill you. That's the rumour about LL Cool J that's been going around for years.
I remember how surprised I was at the climax of "The House on Haunted Hill", it looked for a moment like the black guy was going to die last instead but then he's rescued at the last minute.
aliensexgangchildren It sure was there was a lot to like about the character and having him survive would have really been new thing. Considering how much even now the kill of the black guy out of no where.
A movie starring Robocop and a ghostbuster, who are teamed up to fight a monster created by Stan Winston, and are also accompanied by a track written and composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves one heck of an amazing movie 😎!
Very nice job on the video. Leviathan is one of my personal favorite films of all time. Love the score by Jerry Goldsmith, I never understood the bashing against Stan Winston's FX, great lines of dialogue, wonderful cast, very solid production design by Ron Cobb, likable characters, and having the film take place underwater gave it a different feel than flicks like Alien or The Thing.
Besides Ernie Hudson's Parker-like death, my biggest gripe about Leviathan was the idea of Daniel Stern and Lisa Eilbacher drinking from a flask from a submerged vessel.
Thanks for showing some love to this awesome movie! Leviathan isn't perfect, but it's damn fun and very well-made/well-acted! Ernie Hudson's response to the line "I realize you've all been through Hell" is one of the greatest retorts in cinema history!
At least Congo treated Hudson's character as not only capable, but probably the most badass with survival smarts out of the entire group. Good to see him get the respect he finally deserved in a movie, even if it is Congo.
Glad to see you highlight this true gem of the late 80s . In my opinio one of the best of it's kind and not a bit of cgi in sight , what a relief . The crew genuinely utilized some ingenious techniques to create this film and for that i commend them, much respect . Great retrospective of a terrific film
As a kid, I watched Leviathan and Deep Star Six a lot! I loved them both and still do to this day. The only negative I have about Leviathan is the ending and Ernie Hudson's death. Everything else leading up to it is a great and fun monster movie. I always said it was The Thing underwater.
Man, I LOVE your reviews! You go into such great detail about production and behind the scenes facts, that even when there isn't any talk about the plot or anything usually associated with the typical review of movies, it's still so very interesting! I'm so glad I found your channel.
I have fond memories of this from my days as a video store manager in the UK. We lost count of the number of people who saw the poster for it and asked for 'Levitation'.
They were showing this on tv the other day. Now I get to see an exploring video on it =) And Ernie Hudson should've lived at the end, I know I wasn't the only one disappointed with that.
I remember seeing this in the theatre and absolutely loved it. I found it refreshing to have it set underwater and thought the casting was top notch. Great video Cecil
I Love this movie. Mostly for Peter Weller, he makes any movie better. I also did enjoyed DeepStar Six, although Leviathan is the better film. And The Abyss is not a horror film at all. It's an excellent film, but is not really comparable to Leviathan.
Weller...AND the rest of the cast! This is a really, really good cast, and could not have been much improved by having more "big name" or "A-List" actors in it.
This and Deepstar Six really take me back to my childhood. Every time I watch them I get a huge sense of nostalgia and they always catch me hook, line and sinker.
It's funny how critics also panned The Thing during its release in 1982 because E.T. had just been playing. Crazy how when people put a ton of effort into a solid creature movie it bombs but no-effort cash-grabs like Paranormal Activity get millions.
When I was a kid I used to visit my grandmother in Boston, MA. Two movies stand the test of time with me and are guilty pleasures. This..and Death Machine (oh shit as I type this I see you reviewed it...sweet! Ill comment on it in a few after I watch it)- Even when I was a kid I was a movie buff..this film has it all. Great effects, a sweet score and come on..you have a ghostbuster, Rambo's old CO, the cop from NYPD blue, a wet bandit...AND FUCKING ROBOCOP!!!! This was a great video sir and I subbed to your channel from it. Qapla!
Based upon what you said, I'm surprise that the movie was able to finish production. I wish critics would sometimes stop comparing movies with other movies and simply look at the movie as it's own. While it might as good as some, Leviathan holds it own as a pretty good sci fi horror movie, right along with Deep Star Six.
In regards to Hudson's characters death, I walked out of the movie right after it. Heh. My buddies were cracking up but I was through. Up until that I was onboard.
I have a theory that the monster at the end is actually a another monster made from the two bodies flushed out. It was never shown coming back inside but rather a severed piece of it creating sea slug(with BIG teeth) that starts off the primary monster seen in the film. The primary monster was even seen having its head crushed by the massive dive platform while stuck in an imploding underwater base while the one at the end is intact The two things I have problems with the film are mentioned in this video. One is Ernie Hudson's character just getting "a bridge dropped on him". It would have been much better if at least he kills the monster instead of being killed without any effort. The other is lack of good shots of the monster. Its fantastic looking and when you see pieces of it its terrifying as a chimeric monster. The part where its tentacle/tail is used to attack makes me think of the Snake tail on the classic Chimera.
Believe it or not- you’re right- it is the first monster of Six Pack and Bowman that got flushed out- you even see poor Bow’s face shown closeup, fused into the conglomeration beast’s torso Xx
Thanks for the review of a great movie! It is really well made and filled with indepth info. I enjoy your reviews and looking forward to the next. Keep up the good work
I remember seeing this movie randomly on TV one night, thinking it was either Deep Star Six or the Abyss, which I had seen earlier that year. Good review :) And to learn some more about movies you enjoy(ed) a lot is always a bonus. Thanks!
The ending when Beck punches out Martin was priceless. I wonder if Peter Weller wished that it was Cosmatos instead of a stunt double- so he could really deck him!
That Ernie Hudson after credits scene was ridiculously funny; the best that I've seen of all your after credit scenes so far, and I've been binge watching your videos since yesterday. On a different note I have mixed feelings about the scene that you said probably would not go over well today. On the one hand I can see it "possibly" promoting domestic violence against women but on the other hand, I can see it also promoting equality where a man is not afraid to hit a evil person be a man or woman.
Its funny but I never liked the monster design in this movie. The idea of a amalgamated monster never really worked. Deep Star Six had a much cooler design but with that being said Leviathan is a much better movie :P
Peter Weller punches out a society bitch. Best ending ever. I'll definitely need to see this one - looks awesome. I used to work in a video store and this video was on our shelves. I always thought the cover looked so creepy. I watched The Thing in its entirety for the first time last year...in the dark...in the middle of the night. Somehow, I managed to sleep afterwards.
@Allison Venezio / Allison's Written Words Wow, you had a chance to actually watch awesome 80's horror a long time ago and have just got up to speed on it?
I've always liked this movie. I remember it coming out around the same time as Deep Star Six, and thinking pretty much what you summed up in the review of so many deep ocean movies coming out at the same time, and they being very similar to their outer space counterparts. This one stood out, though. Good review.
Have you ever covered Virus, from 1999? It had Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Sutherland and Billie Baldwin in it, and I remember it had some really crazy effects.
it's funny how the comparison to "The Thing" is brought up, considering the kennel sequence involving the Dog-Thing was done by Stan Winston (when Rob Bottin had fallen ill)
Watched one of my guilty pleasure movies last night... Eight Legged Freaks... it's still great cheesy fun. I think I'll watch The Big Hit or Deep Rising tonight. Check them out if you haven't.
I watched this movie alot when I was a kid. When I finally found on dvd as an adult I watched it and still love the movie to this day. I did laugh at one scene where someone I think Ernie Hudson is holding open a electronic door with all his might and says "hurry up guys I can't hold it much longer." So the two people finally get to the door and the door closes on the last person but the door kind of wiggles instead the door in reality cutting the person in half or the person just getting stuck.
If they remade this nowadays they would get Nicholas Cage to play the male lead and the diving suits would look like giant bear suits. Then the lady getting punched in the head would be acceptable at the end.
The Original Score for Leviathan is brilliant; it included whalesong, marine audio samples & aquatic-sounding reverb for much of the title theme. I edited my own OST using audio-jacks to Cassette recorder.. Real memorable flick that outshone it's budget.
I remember watching this when I was 12 years old. My parents had recorded it from TV to VHS, like a lot of the movies in their collection, then had it and all their others burned on DVDs as DVDs are easier to transport. They had it on the same DVD as Salems Lot, a Vampire Flick that you might like to review as well ;) For me it remains one of my favorite deepsea movies, and scared the shit out of me at the time. Even now when seeing that last frantic escape sequence, I still get ultra-tense. Oh yeah, and that last scene, that was and still is just satisfying to me. Man or Woman, if you almost got me killed or something you deserve a punch, easy as that.
Great job on the review. I agree Leviathan wasn't a great film, but it is still a joy to watch even now. With that cast and crew, I can see why it still holds up as a B-movie classic.
I would love for you to do a video on Cobra! That is, if you haven't already. It's such a ridiculous film and I love it. The sounds the guns make are so over the top.
I always felt this was a sequel to The Thing. As if an infected dog or person ended up at a Rusdian bases and was being transported from Antarctica when the ship sank
Of Unknown Origin is an awesome movie that never got the notoriety it deserves and I hope you get around to exploring that flick and I highly recommend it to others to watch. Peter Weller was great in it as well.
Just saw it for the first time tonight, and although it borrowed heavily from alien, it was still a fun ride. I couldn't believe the shoddy ending was kept, with the red herring shark that didn't do anything but leave them alone, followed by Ernie Hudson's pointless death. I laughed as apparently coast guardsmen apparently aren't issued basic weapons like a sidearm, and just stood there watching the strange monster devour one of the OG Ghostbusters. Still, good fun
Still the best exchange of lines ever.
"I understand, you've gone through Hell."
"Gone?! Bitch, we're still here!!!"
In the original script, he was supposed to be younger and mutate into one of those creatures as he had been wounded by one of them.
I remember how surprised I was at the climax of "The House on Haunted Hill", it looked for a moment like the black guy was going to die last instead but then he's rescued at the last minute.
its not that Hollywood love trends, they simply lack any form of originality
SOMETIMES they come up with an original idea... that then gets piled on by imitators.
Ernie Hudson was right, his character's death was pointless.
aliensexgangchildren Ernie should always live, he's great
One of the many underrated actors from the 80s that still work but don't get the bigger roles they should.
aliensexgangchildren fucking A! His death was so fucking stupid haha
aliensexgangchildren It sure was there was a lot to like about the character and having him survive would have really been new thing. Considering how much even now the kill of the black guy out of no where.
I definitely have to agree. I respect the director for sticking to his guns, but Ernie Hudson is great and his death was pointless.
You had me at Peter Weller.
I love this movie.
Whether behind or in front of the camera, Weller makes it better.
James Bee he's my favorite actor
A movie starring Robocop and a ghostbuster, who are teamed up to fight a monster created by Stan Winston, and are also accompanied by a track written and composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves one heck of an amazing movie 😎!
And they also are working for Evil-Lyn, and have one of the Wet Bandits, Rambo's mentor, and the original TV Flash's partner on their side.
You sir, are awesome
Tyrant Gregcag yet they ruined it. Great cast doesnt mean great movie.
It also had one of the burglars from Home Alone! He's a total asshole, and everything is his fault in the film!
Al Nu Yeah, hiring Marf for your extrapolation crew is never a great idea.
gone? bitch we're still here!
I wish ernie had a little more pull to be able to change that ending, it was pretty pointless
Erisi Dlarit Yeah, he should have lived.
Ernie Hudson is cool. He can make anything cooler. My favourite ghostbuster ever.
underated ghostbuster you mean
When I turned 16 and was able to finally drive myself, this was the first movie I went to see.
Agreed.
***** thanks!

Joe Vector Thanks!
As a kid, I watched Leviathan and Deep Star Six a lot! I loved them both and still do to this day. The only negative I have about Leviathan is the ending and Ernie Hudson's death. Everything else leading up to it is a great and fun monster movie.
I always said it was The Thing underwater.
Ha, the woman he has his arm around while he punches out the other woman with his other arm - totally unphazed.
Remi Stardust not true, her panties just got wetter, a lot wetter.
gillecroisd 92 - not far off at all, good guess.
Leviathan is one of my favorite underwater creature movie. It had a great cast and great special effects too.
That last scene in the movie still holds well these days
2015:
"...The Abyss, but that's a whole other episode"
2019:......still waiting
And still....
Also, Peter Weller decking Meg Foster was the best part of the movie! LOL!!!
comedy gold at its finest
better than nick cage bear punching a chick?
I don't know if that was the best part of the movie, but it was funny. Ernie Hudson flipping out during the movie was also hilarious.
It's also widely rumored that Kurt Russell ghost directed Tombstone while George P. Cosmatos got official credit.
Tombstone is easily my favorite movie Cosmatos "directed", so if Russell did actually direct more power to him- still an excellent film!
I misread that as "kurt Russell's ghost directed tombstone" three times
Cosmatos has never actually directed a movie
Long time sub here, I've always loved how detailed your reviews are, so entertaining!
electricfirefly101 Fantastic! Thanks for sticking around :)
GoodBadFlicks Please do the movie Surviving The Game!
They were showing this on tv the other day. Now I get to see an exploring video on it =) And Ernie Hudson should've lived at the end, I know I wasn't the only one disappointed with that.
Awesome film, that last scene made it most memorable.
I have always liked this movie and Ernie Hudson should have survived.
I remember seeing this in the theatre and absolutely loved it. I found it refreshing to have it set underwater and thought the casting was top notch. Great video Cecil
Ill never get used to seeing Daniel Stern in movies without McCauly Culkin
I Love this movie. Mostly for Peter Weller, he makes any movie better. I also did enjoyed DeepStar Six, although Leviathan is the better film. And The Abyss is not a horror film at all. It's an excellent film, but is not really comparable to Leviathan.
True, The Abyss is pure scifi.
Weller...AND the rest of the cast! This is a really, really good cast, and could not have been much improved by having more "big name" or "A-List" actors in it.
The acting alone makes this worth seeing again and again.
This and Deepstar Six really take me back to my childhood. Every time I watch them I get a huge sense of nostalgia and they always catch me hook, line and sinker.
I love when all of these sea movies came out theatrically! The Abyss being my favorite but DSS and Leviathan were great creature features.
It's funny how critics also panned The Thing during its release in 1982 because E.T. had just been playing. Crazy how when people put a ton of effort into a solid creature movie it bombs but no-effort cash-grabs like Paranormal Activity get millions.

I think this is one of the best Lovecraft-inspired films of the 80's.
Lamont Smith Exactly.
In regards to Hudson's characters death, I walked out of the movie right after it. Heh. My buddies were cracking up but I was through. Up until that I was onboard.
Please do "Saturn 3" one day! That would be so great! I first watched that movie when I was 9 years old and was traumatized.
I have a theory that the monster at the end is actually a another monster made from the two bodies flushed out. It was never shown coming back inside but rather a severed piece of it creating sea slug(with BIG teeth) that starts off the primary monster seen in the film. Thanks for the review of a great movie!
It is really well made and filled with indepth info.
I enjoy your reviews and looking forward to the next.
Keep up the good work
Some UA-cam film critic could do an entire month worth of episodes based off "Ocenanic Horror Films of 1989".
I remember seeing this movie randomly on TV one night, thinking it was either Deep Star Six or the Abyss, which I had seen earlier that year.
Good review :) And to learn some more about movies you enjoy(ed) a lot is always a bonus. Thanks!
Love to see another "Leviathan" fan!
What a pair!
Great stuff! I'm impressed with the research you did. It's so much fun to learn the back-stories of horror movies. Keep it up!
A very insightful exploration. Everyone loves that final scene.
The ending when Beck punches out Martin was priceless.
I wonder if Peter Weller wished that it was Cosmatos instead of a stunt double- so he could really deck him!
I don't know why but I have always loved Deep Star Six and leviathan, both were great flicks.
GoodBadFlicks Thank you for the Exploring videos. These are by far my favourite reviews on youtube.
newonaginnalf Thank you! I'm glad to hear that :)
Honestly, this was a great cast. Loved this a lot.
I absolutely love this movie and I'm sad there's not more good deep sea movies out there.
That Ernie Hudson after credits scene was ridiculously funny; the best that I've seen of all your after credit scenes so far, and I've been binge watching your videos since yesterday.

The first survival horror game was 3D Monster Maze in 1982 and it is still worth playing today.
Nice. This movie actually kind of freaked me out as a kid. I'm pretty sure Rob Bottin's last name is pronounced Bo-teen btw.
One punch for man but a huge whallop for gender equality!
ONE PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNCH
UnItEd StAtEs oF SmAsH
To be fair meg foster’s character was a bitch. So in my opinion, she had it coming.
Yeah what Stefan said, she left them to die there
Is it more sexist to hit a woman or more sexist not to hit her because she’s a woman? Assuming All things equal an she deserves it of course?
bro you gotta do "virus" with jamie lee curtis and a baldwin
"a practical effects version of Andy Sirkis"
..oh, you mean Doug Jones
Peter Weller's voice = boss
Its funny but I never liked the monster design in this movie. The idea of a amalgamated monster never really worked. Deep Star Six had a much cooler design but with that being said Leviathan is a much better movie :P
Peter Weller punches out a society bitch. Best ending ever. I'll definitely need to see this one - looks awesome. I used to work in a video store and this video was on our shelves. I always thought the cover looked so creepy.
I watched The Thing in its entirety for the first time last year...in the dark...in the middle of the night. Somehow, I managed to sleep afterwards.
@Allison Venezio / Allison's Written Words
Wow, you had a chance to actually watch awesome 80's horror a long time ago and have just got up to speed on it?
You would have slept even better if I was there lol
Valium helps a lot.
You should check out Deep rising, I'm sure you have already seen it. Another "Good Bad Flick."
Morgan Hanson hell yeah! Great movie.
"If the money is there we do not care."
Too corny and silly. Leviathan played it serious and was superior because of it.
@@patrickmartin8854 that pretty much sums up hollywood in general
Always really loved this movie.
I've always liked this movie. I remember it coming out around the same time as Deep Star Six, and thinking pretty much what you summed up in the review of so many deep ocean movies coming out at the same time, and they being very similar to their outer space counterparts. This one stood out, though. Good review.
Gabriel Subia thanks!
Really enjoyed this episode Cecil, keep up the great work!
Kevin McConnell thank you!
I saw this on VHS when it first came out and loved it!!
Watched one of my guilty pleasure movies last night... Eight Legged Freaks... it's still great cheesy fun. I think I'll watch The Big Hit or Deep Rising tonight. Check them out if you haven't.
***** Eight Legged Freaks is indeed a treat. Great fun.
I watched this movie alot when I was a kid. When I finally found on dvd as an
adult I watched it and still love the movie to this day. I did laugh at one scene
where someone I think Ernie Hudson is holding open a electronic door
with all his might and says "hurry up guys I can't hold it much longer."
So the two people finally get to the door and the door closes on the last
person but the door kind of wiggles instead the door in reality
cutting the person in half or the person just getting stuck.
At first I thought I had seen this movie already. Then I realized the movie I saw was Abyss. I will have to watch this.
This is one of my favorite horror films, it reminds me of Deep Fear and I LOVE Peter Weller!!!😆😍❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I remembered being confused by Hudson's death at the end, but then I shrugged & chalked it up to the 2 survivors formula of the time.
If they remade this nowadays they would get Nicholas Cage to play the male lead and the diving suits would look like giant bear suits. Then the lady getting punched in the head would be acceptable at the end.
Prob my new favorite channel.
I'm an eighties kid, this channel is awesome!
I can't believe I've never heard of this movie. I'm gonna check it out!
I loved a lot of these underwater films, myself as an aspiring writer and director, I hope to make my own take on it one day
The Original Score for Leviathan is brilliant; it included whalesong, marine audio samples & aquatic-sounding reverb for much of the title theme. I edited my own OST using audio-jacks to Cassette recorder.. Real memorable flick that outshone it's budget.
That sucker punch, awesome.
I know Hector Elizondo. He was in Justice League Unlimited.
Stan THE MAN Winston!
Screw Abyss- Leviathan was a fun movie Xx
I can't wait till you go full time on this UA-cam gig!
I remember watching this when I was 12 years old. My parents had recorded it from TV to VHS, like a lot of the movies in their collection, then had it and all their others burned on DVDs as DVDs are easier to transport.
They had it on the same DVD as Salems Lot, a Vampire Flick that you might like to review as well ;)
For me it remains one of my favorite deepsea movies, and scared the shit out of me at the time.
***** thanks!
I didn't eve know that this movie existed. Now I'm intrigued. Time to find a copy!
If anything, that ending punch was well deserved!
they had a unwritten token black guy has to die rule back then
Just saw your video of Pandorum and now this, good job man, Subbed.
Of Unknown Origin is an awesome movie that never got the notoriety it deserves and I hope you get around to exploring that flick and I highly recommend it to others to watch. Peter Weller was great in it as well.
This movie scared the shit out of me when I saw it at 10 in 1996. I was terrified for the rest of the day. I joke that it ruined my Easter that year!
I'm going to watch it today! Thank you for the recommendation!
Just a technical note: you "undercrank" when you want the image to move faster; you "overcrank" to make images move slower.
I knew that; I just didn't think I heard him correctly.
THANK YOU.
I've been trying to find out what the title was to Deep Star Six because I saw it on TV a long while ago.
I...need..to...see...this movie!
Great review always look forward to these vids, I've always enjoyed the detail that goes into the making of films.
Yu1awAngerWolf82 thanks!
My god that punch was savage.
That last part....that was my favorite scene in the film! "Gone? Bitch we still here!"
I've seen this movie almost ten times and i could swear those scenes were filmed underwater
Just saw it for the first time tonight, and although it borrowed heavily from alien, it was still a fun ride. I couldn't believe the shoddy ending was kept, with the red herring shark that didn't do anything but leave them alone, followed by Ernie Hudson's pointless death.
