I think we definetely ignored the existentialism in the film because we ignore the existentialism in our lives, at dinner parties I have found no one wants to talk about death and suffering

this is great. thank you. I saw BARBIE on streaming about 6 months after it opened. I wasn't wearing pink. I was by myself in my own apartment. I am a 56 year old gay man. a gay man who wanted a barbie desperately as a child. but growing up in the Bible Belt small town where I was, in the early 1970's, it wasn't; going to happen. I am thrilled to hear you speak on the existentialism in the film, as well as the heart. thank you. the heart. I am amazed that anyone thought it was either male hating or that it was feminist propaganda. I went where you went-that it was about humanity and about-again-heart. and way do I agree that they even went the extra mile to make their points when they could have easily gone the easy route.
I loved BARBIE. I thought it was really really funny. the funniest film I've seen in a long time. and I loved the heart of it. the memory sections with gloria and her daughter. all the stuff with Ruth Handler. those sections moved me very much. also I loved that they made a point of telling the world who ruth handler is! (also more info about ruth-after she left Mattel because of the financial scandal, she took time away, she did her hours of service and paid her fine. and then, because she had had breast cancer and had both breasts removed, she developed the prosthetic breast device for women who have also had to go through this procedure. so she invented barbie, and the original device that women wear post-breast cancer. so if you think about how many women's lives that ruth handler has directly influenced, it is incredible. she really has done so much, and changed things for women. very cool that the world knows her name in a more direct way now thanks to the film.)
I agree fully with your assessment of the BARBIE film. I think you are right on. I am sorry you felt a need to kind of apologize for your theory. and/or you knew you were playing with fire, as it were putting this theory out there. that the angry at BARBIE guys would come after you. or the extreme feminists would come after you no matter what you wrote. if anyone does, that is on them. I think you are right on here in what you say. it is fascinating to me the men who are outraged by this film. how dare this be the summer blockbuster? how could they? when I look at the summer blockbusters for the last 40 years now really-all of the batman movies, Spiderman movies, superman movies, x-men movies, the Star Wars films, the pirates of the Caribbean movies, the Harry Potter movies--can we identify any pattern here with these movies? is there anything they ALL have in common that is different from BARBIE? so-after all those movies-there is one BARBIE and bunches of men lose their minds (loudly lose their minds) and they can't take it. they are outraged! their outrage proves anything we see in the BARBIE movie around the absurdities surrounding patriarchy times 100. really guys? really? grow up. get a grip. settle down. learn how to play with others. keep your traps shut. you have said enough already. listen instead of always talking for a change. guys? come on now.
thanks for posting. I liked and subscribed. I was thrilled to see where you ended up with this film. and frankly, the fact that I have watched ben Shapiro be a ringleader for whipping up right wing hate and division for years now through lies, manipulation, and silliness. only to watch our neo-nazi movement begin to flourish as they start to unabashedly make appearances now at parades, the Disney parks, drag bars, etc, full on nazis with swastikas. I look at ben Shapiro and think-you happy now? you have had a big hand in this hate coming forward loud and clear like it has done. how do you feel about this now, ben? you think you will be the exception for them? how has this worked out in the past with nazis? you are outraged about the BARBIE movie?? ben, I would focus on the nazi's if I were you. because ben-you know who is not marching at Disney land with the nazis? drag queens. gay people, and barbie. no. none of them are there. so ben, you are misguided to say the least. and the mistake has serious implications. get on this. I see his outrage at BARBIE, I see the nazis waving their flags at disney, and it kind puts everything into perspective that ben Shapiro does or says. everything. he also predicted BARBIE would die at the box office and be out of theaters in 2 weeks. his record is not good. his ideas are to be kind-misguided. I am glad you did this deep dive into what is going on in this film. thank you for looking deeper into all of these things. thanks again. I look forward to more.

Your response was very encouraging to read. Too much hate and polarization undeservedly surrounded this movie. I was really hoping to bring a perspective that was a bit more positive and tad less divisive. It's great to hear that you were able to enjoy and get something beneficial from the movie!

This was a good video, and your view on the existential messaging of Barbie is valid, but even with the nice message, I still can't really enjoy it. And that mostly stems from two core reasons: 1, Barbie molds the story, characters and jokes to fit messages and themes, instead of the other way around, and as a result these aspects feel like they're being used as props instead of useful assets to tell a compelling and enjoyable story. 2, Instead of trying to convince you why the things it believes are true and important, Barbie assumes its audience already agrees with everything it'll say and makes no attempts to actually justify itself. As another UA-camr put it, "It isn't trying to convert, it's preaching to the converted."
I could list so many other TV shows and movies that do a way better job of handling themes/messages, have likable and well-defined characters that I remember, and feel like actual stories rather than angry lectures, but if I did, we'd be here all day. And it really sucks, because I was actually somewhat excited for this movie. If the writers had put as much effort into the writing as they did the sets and costumes, I think Barbie would have had the potential to be a truly fun and uplifting experience.
