Scout has introduced their upcoming Terra Truck, but some questions have arisen about just how big it is. Midsized? Fullsized?
Today I've put the power of the spreadsheet to work to give some context to the size of the Terra.
(psst - it's nearly full-sized)

Scout motors has an official community forum, and they have a Faq, and they have updated dimensions to list with and without mirrors:
80" is the limit before they need running lights like the Hummer.
Terra Pickup Dimensions
Length: 229.2 in
Width Without Mirrors 79.9 in
Width With Mirrors 91.6 in
Max Height: 77.7 in
Wheelbase: 148.6 in
Max Ground Clearance: 12+ in
Bed Length: 66 in (5.5 ft)
Cab to Bumper: 71.7 in
Thanks for sharing the info.!
eh! I was hoping the 91" was WITHOUT the mirrors!
My German Shepherd, Blue Heeler & Lab need the space in width.
I was just about to share this info. You beat me to it! 👍
It's essentially a full sized truck. I'm actually happy about that. Put my deposit on the Terra Harvester 😊
I don't think I've ever seen an American car with a 90 inch width, but to have that bench seat for three adults, although it was done in the past that middle position was always kind of an extra or spare, this looks like it could be regularly used to seat three people in comfort. Glad to see this type of seating return, it's so open in non-restrictive and comfortable compared to sitting in a tight cockpit type configuration in a hard uncomfortable sport seat, when you're not driving a sports car, a lot of us don't want that.
Even if this thing ever ends up getting to market it probably won't come close to the target price. It'll probably be hit with multiple design compromises by then anyway.
What's interesting is that the Traveller is 24" longer than the Scout II but still 13" shorter than the '72+ Travelall without the spare tire carrier but 4" longer with the carrier as it is 17" all by itself. I wonder if the carrier will be an option or if it will be shorter if the max off-road tires are not specified?
Amazing Rivian R1T
It is huge, larger than the standard RAM 1500.
Thanks for this!!! We covered the launch video and called it a "tweener" but after watching this we were wrong. It's right up there with all the full sized competitors.
Wow! Great to see you here!
It's surprisingly big, but I definitely feel they're aiming for "Big Rivian" rather than F150 competitor.
I currently have a Rivian R1T quad motor and its been my favorite car so far and ive had many. I did put a deposit on the scout terra with range extender. And me being from south carolina and knowing scouts new plant being here is awesome.
Awesome!
I had a 77 scout2 and it was the perfect size. Small enough to fit in the trails and parking lots but bigger than the jeeps which could barely haul a full size cooler.
I'm rooting for Scout to succeed but not sure I'd buy one due to the connection to VW.
Yep my thoughts as well.
What's not to like? They are independent but have the financial and power backing of VW. It is perfect
@@arcostonian I'm just not a fan of VW for various reasons and don't want to support the company.
@@arcostonianmy concern is the software, id’s r known to b glitchy
@@arcostonianDieselGate, but the Scouts are cool….
Great video. Articulate, concise, to the point, and informative
Thanks. :)
Can you do a video comparing the Traveler to vehicles like the Tahoe, Sequoia, etc?
I believe the measurements on the old scout, I had a relative that had one and although The styling looked like a full size Blazer in person it was smaller; not quite as small as a Wrangler but kind of in between those two.
I’m not ever going to buy one but it’s just nice to have Scout back.👍
For the price, I doubt I will either. But having it with a range-extender is really compelling. And I think both the SUV and Truck look fantastic.
@@AllCarswithJonOh right. The range extender was a nice surprise.
At 91" wide you would have to run extra lighting like the dually trucks and Ford raptors.
I’m thinking about getting it bc the bench front seat, no brainer why is no one else making a 6 seater p.u. Like my ram1500 has? Do you have to get the harvester smogged checked, how’s that gonna work? How big is it?
How big is the back seat legroom compared to the full size trucks??
At this point, no idea. I'm sure as it gets closer to production we'll get more information on the dimensions.
Thanks, I love it, but too big for me, reason I did nid not buy a Slilvorado EV (love my Blazer EV, but need a truck). I will wait for the Colorado EV I guess or check the Tacoma EV if sooner.
When they released the images I thought of Rivian.
I agree, but I think the Scout looks way, way better.
Maybe Rivian took inspiration from the old Scouts.
The published 91.6 inch width is INCLUDING mirrors.
I don't get it Jon. Your comparison choices leave out the most comparable vehicle - the Ford Lightening. Comparing numerous ICE's but leaving out the direct competitor makes little sense. Can you please explain? If you are trying to ignore the thud that the Lightening has been greeted with it seems there's much to be feared about how the Terra will be greeted with. At best, probably just a ho-hum.
I could have added the Silverado EV as well, but this isn't a comparison between EV trucks, but where the Scout fits in the Truck World between midsized and fullsized.
F-150 Lightning is literally an electrified F-150. The dimensions are the same.😂
@@mrgurulittle7000 Yes. And therefore very comparable to the Scout. Which makes it a mystery why Jon did not include it. The Lightening is also widely considered a flop which means the Scout will likely be the same. Very comparable.
@@wescam2958I don’t see the point of your complaint. We’re comparing dimensions and the F-150 and the Lighting are the exact same size.
@@mrgurulittle7000 Just announced today by Ford - Lightening production has been halted for the rest of 2024. Production may resume Jan. 6, 2025. Scout is building a truck for a market that does not exist in the U.S. Little demand for such a vehicle.
I did not realize that this one is basically a full size. I'm curious now what the size difference is between this and the traveler version.
It's also really wide, with a bench seat option that can fit three adults! Hopefully American manufacturers will follow this formula, find their history and start making nice big comfortable vehicles again.
@@Jack_StaffordSome of us have Fur babies like German Shepherds, 90 lb. Labs, & Blue Heeler. Tiny is NOT an option for us!
When did the audio quality get so good?
For my videos? Several months ago.
Absolutely love this truck but I'm with you scratching my head on the width they put out. It does not look 3 inches wider than a TRX.
The published 91.6 inch width is INCLUDING mirrors.
@@dillonh321 that's what I'm thinking but the diagram on the website makes it seem as if the mirrors are inline with the fenders. That diagram has to be incorrect because there is no way it's that wide fender to fender.
You missed the best truck to compare it to - GMC Hummer EV Pickup. Width without mirrors - 86.67 in. Width with mirrors - 93.7 in. Wheelbase - 136 in. Bed length - 60 in. Range 318 miles. Length 216.8 in. The Hummer is more expensive, but it is a legend, even electrical and it looks a lot better than Tesla brick. And this Scout Terra is not a small truck like Chevy S10 of the 90s.
I like new Scout even its EV or hybird, interior is awesome, nice colours. Yesterday KIA release Tasman, what earlier impressions Jon?
Tasman: Hideous.
@@AllCarswithJon LOL 5 markets at moment Keroa, middle east, south Africa, Asia, Australia n NZ for sale of Tasman. Some have questions on size of diesel engine n output especially towing 3500kg trailer. I don't mind interior but exterior is interesting especially flat bed tray. Single cab n single cab chassis is still to be released.
@@AllCarswithJonI just checked it out. Holy hell is that an abomination.
@@AllCarswithJon won't be sold in North America.
(make sure it has a clean space for food, groceries and fresh clothes )
Thank you I've been waiting to see these dimensions! Got my deposit on a Terra with range extender.
I know the premise of this vehicle is for off road. But, does anyone know how well it will do on the highway? Tia!
OK. I have to ask for all the viewers out there thinking the same thing. In the background, did T-Rex eat the occupants of the overturned Fiat?
Thankfully all the occupants escaped before the T-Rex and Fiat had their epic battle.
A full size truck with a mid-size bed.
Which means oversized (which makes it less efficient) and somehow STILL with a worse bed than real trucks.
It's got a longer bed than 1/2 the 'real' trucks.
60000? 😅. Good luck.
These are large vehicles priced very close to the average price of vehicles sold in the USA.
Maybe _I_ don't want to pay that much, but I think they've nailed the price-point if they can hit it on release.
We’ll see. I’ve seen prices change when they’re finally released. I hope they don’t. I’m not paying close to $100K for a truck. Looking at you, Rivian. lol.
You can finance up to a 30 yr. loan… is called Auto Fha😂😂
Yay just what America needs. Another friggin' pickup truck and SUV.
Yes, this one is helped along by VW, someone we all know and avoid.
I talked to a sales person at Dodge and the idea is less sedans and more crossovers, SUV’s and trucks. Sedans aren’t selling as fast, apparently.
@@gfoster1972 What sedans? There are no choices left. Even after being left to die on the vine for 10 years the Charger was still selling.
@ Exactly. Now they’re going away. It’s weird. Not sure what other sedans, exactly. He never mentioned. Trucks and SUV’s are what they believe we need. So dumb.
@@gfoster1972 It wasn't so much due to market forces but CAFE requirements, they can't make a sedan that will achieve the mileage government decided was acceptable. That's why the Crown Victoria and Town Car died, it was selling well and Lincoln has never recovered from it.
When it comes to small- to mid-sized electrified trucks, I really wish that Chevy would bring back the El Camino as an electric. Or perhaps another carmaker could release an electric truck/car.
It is 79.9 inches without the mirrors. The diagram is deceiving.
B
The diagram uses perspective.
🤔...its a full-size truck
The synergies of VW,Rivian and Scout are just too evenly balanced not to accept.
The lack of real supply chain issues in an uncertain world may prove most telling.
Ordered my Terra.
May go back and order the Harvester too.
What truck is this?
Really?
Volvo with MAN drivetrain and Scania tires
Two things
I find it strange how VW went to all this effort into making a new brand.
I feel like its because they either think the VW brand name is so weak and has little appeal to Americans. I mean the sales show they arent the big dogs here like in other markets.
Or they want to get around VW dealers. Apparently they are seeing VW for not allowing them to sale the Scout.
And its crazy to me how large midsize trucks are yet have such awful back seats. My brother say in the new Canyon and it looked like a subcompact car in the back in terms of space. I sat in a Tacoma and it was much better.
Definitely something that would need to be addressed to make midsize trucks more desirable. For such large expensive things they are very inefficiently laid out.
Also yet another ridiculous 40k plus product. *sigh*
2 reasons: 1) they want to do direct to consumer, with existing franchise law they can't do this under the VW brand
2) Due to the chicken tax, the terra would have to be built in the US to be price competitive, and there isn't a big market for these internationally, so locking it up under a new brand doesn't have many consequences to the vehicles not being available outside the US
Further, the VW brand isn't exactly known as an "off road" brand. They've got the Scout name, they can directly challenge Rivian and Hummer with a well-known offroad brand name, they shed the reputation of VW by being an independent company, and they're free (as you pointed out) from current VW dealers.
It's a big investment in brand, product, and a new factory, but if it works it could pay off huge for them.
@@AllCarswithJon Do you think having a off road VW would be some much need brand cache? Other than the Golf R, which isn't exactly mainstream, they don't have any cars that people think are exactly cool. These two models would have definitely made people second guess VW as a brand if they do well. But I guess it also means if these cars are a flop less damage to the VW brand.
I have had VW products with horrible results...i am not interested in scout if it has the huge VW problems !!
VW ruinrd it before it started.
I really hate EVs.
I hate not having the choice, so many of the new cars are really cool but only come as EV.
At least Dodge is releasing its new even bigger charger and charger coupe in both EV and combustion engine versions.
And I absolutely love that finally we can get a full front bench seat and all of that expansive room with a column shifter in a vehicle again, that alone is a huge selling point in my opinion opinion.
I hate being restricted to a tight cockpit in a sports seat, especially in cars that are not sports cars like family cars and pickup trucks with the same uncomfortable seats and cramped drivers area.
@@Jack_Stafford Amen, brother. I'm right there with you.
