Why is the Dodge's speedo making a racket? Plus, belated gift for the Anglia | Old Classic Car vlog

  • Hi all, the 1947 Dodge WC truck's speedometer started making a bit of racket so I needed to take a look to see what the problem was. Was the speedo cable at fault? or did the problem lie within the speedometer itself? I take it apart and have a look, plus compare it to a spare speedo that I assumed was identical, but wasn't.
Last year I forgot to celebrate the 1952 Ford Anglia's 70th birthday, so I round out this upload with a period-correct gift I found for it, but only after cleaning it up with 1952-made polish.
I don't do too many "classic car vlog" type videos as, usually, what goes on in the garage is less-than-riveting, but I'll film what I can.
It won't be long before the classic car show season is in full swing, so fingers crossed there'll be lots of places to visit in the very near future.
Please take a look around the rest of the channel when you're finished here, likes - subs - comments welcomed as always, thanks.

When you mentioned your box of filler caps reminded me of when I was a kid, we'd been out for the day and Dad put some petrol in the car a couple of miles from home ready for work the next day. When we got home Dad noticed that the filler cap was missing, so he improvised with a bit of rag stuffed in the neck and nipped back to the garage, one of the few open at that time on a Sunday. somewhat embarrassed, he asked the guy if he had picked up a filler cap. Without a word he just reached down behind his desk and brought out a cardboard box filled with filler caps and said 'Take your pick!' Dad saw his at the top so all was well!

I did just that with the old Dodge tourer a few years back, popped it on top of the spare wheel, filled up, drove off and forgot all about the cap. Went back and someone had picked it up and put it on the kerbside, which was nice of them

The Anglia is three years older than me. I enjoy your tinkering videos and most of the car shows. I am interested mainly in British cars because of the memories that they evoke. I must say though that I do like the sound of the Dodge's engine, that is probably because I had travelled many miles, in my youth, in old military trucks, such as Bedford and Leyland, with that whirling/whining sound.

Interesting Rick. The speedo, cable is attached to a rotating magnet within the instrument , kept centralised by a sleeve bearing or ball race. The indicating needle is pivoted to a rotating aluminium disc, with a ' clock ' hairspring to return it to zero. The rotating magnet and disc must not be in contact but close together but as the spinning cable rotates faster , the magnet overcomes the resistance of the hairspring and pulls the aluminium disc around ( and needle ) by means of ' eddy ' currents , an electromagnetic force , Faraday's Law !. Most mechanical instruments used the same operation for many years .Possible cause was years of idleness , grease can work up the cable , harden and find its way into the instrument and foul the critical space between magnet and disc pulling the needle around eratically .May be worth removing the inner cable sometime , clean off sticky grease and smear very lightly with a very soft grease.

Of the road worthy cars, I think they all have their merits. I have to say the Anglia is my favourite, but as a 103e owner I might be a teeny bit biased. I am most envious of the 4CV, I had no end of crusty Renaults in my mis-spent youth, 4's, 5's and 12's mainly, even rallying in a 12 for a couple of years.

I sure like the Dodge pickup. My grandparents had a '39 Dodge sedan and there are many similarities--hood, fenders, instrumentation, so it brings back many fond memories. Their Dodge was extremely reliable and handled the logging roads on Vancouver Island just fine. I had a '46 GMC pickup which I completely rebuilt, so I have a great appreciation for your work.

allways remember to use a can of zink additive on the dodge motor during oil changes and I'm sure the rest of the fleet has flat not roller tappets too but i know mopar has them ,my 48 Plymouth has its original motor and plan on it staying in there for a bit longer, you might consider using graffite lubrication in speed o heads ,oil tends to get sticky in colder temps

I think the large wheel is a sort of balance ( magnet?) probably a spring too otherwise the whole thing would go crazy. A spot of oil seems to have done the trick. Yes check the oil but if it looks alright I personally would leave it for a while just to see how she runs. A good addition to the Anglia I think it looks better than that chrome one. Which one to see more? Well I like them all but I would be interested to see some progress on the A40, just saying! Thanks Rick another successful tinkering day.👍👍

Really interesting to see inside a speedo and understand how it works. I suppose it would seize up a bit after 70 plus years, just like me! You can get universal joints for socket sets to use in tight spots, or send the Youthful Assistant under the dashboard instead. At the risk of teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, I definitely recommend an oil change for the Dodge; oil does age and short, cold runs can cause condensation in the oil. In answer to your question at the end of the video, any of the present OCC fleet is enjoyable to watch, although my current favourite is the 4CV.

I spent some time fixing speedo's, a quick and easy test, get a small drill find a screwdriver bit that fits in the square, slowly use the drill to make the speedo work, the older ones worked both ways, you could increase or decrease the mileage, if there was an issue just turning it with a drill would show where the noise was, not sure on your truck but some speedo cables were round, just crimped at the ends, the needle should pop off you can make some tools like a watchmaker uses to remove the hands of a watch, just bigger for a speedo, if the reading was erratic and waving all over it was sometimes because the hair spring damper behind the dial had come loose or broken. Should have watched it through to the end as thats what you did, electric drill with variable speed helps.
With E10 being pushed on us how are you coping, just hunt out four star fuel, do you or will you remove the ethanol, go for eco fuel, the thought of draining each vehicle for extended storage and then storing the fuel seems a nightmare

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Рік тому

I often just use E5 (super unleaded) which has less ethanol than E10 obviously, for now at least, I think it might become a problem if the fuel is left for a long time in the tank etc, but if it's routinely used and replaced then I'm not worried particularly.

Evening, yes flappin and a clappin are industry terms used often in the 1940s. It was a strange noise, I think it echoed behind the dash making it sound louder than I'd expected, hence peering underneath the front end on a couple of occasions to make sure everything was still present and correct. Pleased that the bakelite cap meets with your approval ...!
