GRAB THE THERMALS! the Renault 4CV & Dodge come out to play in the snow

  • The Renault 4CV was well due a winter warm-up having not run in a while, and as it was blocked in by the Dodge pickup, both were fired into life and moved outside a) to warm them through thoroughly b) to take photos in the snow and c) because why not!? d) see c!
    I can't wait for the better weather and the classic cars show season to come along, as we're all keen to get out and about again in the oldies. There are a few prep jobs I want to do on the Dodge and the Renault 4CV before they see too much use, so those are pencilled in for the near future (greasing, fluid checks etc), and the Standard 8 now wants a check-over having seen a fair bit of regular use since being pressed back into service in 2022. So plenty to be getting on with at Old Classic Car HQ.
    The Renault 4CV (as it was known in France) was sold here in the UK as the Renault 750, and was assembled from a knocked-down kit of parts in RHD form at Renault's facility in Acton, although I believe a certain amount of content that went into the 750 / 4CV was of local, ie British, origin. I have seen maybe a handful at shows over the years, including a rare 4CV van, but if you remember owning a Renault 4CV, or do now, please pop a note in the comments and tell me (us) all about it. I wonder how many were sold here in the UK? Going off the chassis number, our 4CV dates to 1953 although didn't see registration in the UK until 1954.

    I moved to the US in 1985 and about a year or so later I found a 1959 Chevy Apache 32 Long Bed Fleetside Big Back window for $200. It was the stovebolt 6 with a granny low tranny. I lived in Nor Cal and was self Employed and I dont know how many trips to So Cal, Nevada, Oregon & Washington did in that truck, put 1,000's of miles on it, worked it hard and loved it dearly !!!

    Another lovely video. Memories of my Dad allowing me to drive his 68 Austin Cambridge along the private road around the allotments. Never the keenest gardener, I was bribed to help him with the promise of a drive. The phrases "careful, watch what you're doing, steady etc" still make me smile. Good to see Harley having a bit of a go.

    Nothing wrong with a bit of fun in the snow. As a keen photographer myself we rarely get much snow down South of the UK. So make the most of it. You could put a bag of gravel in the back of the Dodge truck to add some weight but I would guess that is only an issue in ice or snow. As Harley said possibly one of the brakes sticking but I couldn't tell from the camera which one. Thanks for the video Rick and Harley.

    Here in Northern Massachusetts, that snow is what we'd call a 'sprinkling'! Unfortunately, the UK usually gets the wet, slushy stuff which is icy & a lot more slippery. I remember shovelling out the walkways at a heritage rail center one Easter at about 10am a few years ago - it had all melted by noon!

    • @oldclassiccarUK

      Indeed there was no risk of us being snowed in, it's been a while since we've had this much so had to make the most of it!!! :)

    Ha haaa great minds think alike! I got my Kubelwagen out for an off road session in a local Forrest I have access to, wanted to give the limited-slip-diff a workout. Three quarters of an hour of fun followed buy no fuel supply despite full tank🙀 I whipped off the fuel pump thinking that the diaphragm had gone only to discover that the activating rod had snapped clean in two! So I jury rigged a Jerry can gravity feed to the carb and went home😊 all good fun👍👍

    Harley did a good job maneuvering around the yard in both vehicles (Love 'em both!), but I cringed each time he got in without knocking the snow off his shoes. I realize there's no salt involved, but water can be harmful as well. The first vehicle I bought was a '40 Ford 1/2 ton pickup (same color as the Dodge), which I discovered had a severely rusted frame just at the back of the cab. I didn't know at the time it was repairable (I was 19) so I very much regret selling it. My second was a '62 VW convertible and I concur as to how good rear engine cars are in the snow. BTW, in Vermont, that amount of snow is just a minor nuisance (chuckle, chuckle). 😁

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Рік тому +2

      Yes it wasn't a huge snow covering but it was enough to take a few photos, don't worry I brushed out the snow from our shoes before I put things away. I've got to the point where I don't over-worry about things so much as I once did, although I try to avoid salty roads.

    Great fun! And glad that you get Harvey to learn to drive. I had an indulgent father who allowed, mainly after a full Sunday lunch(!) my sister and I to drive (quite illegally on empty country lanes years ago in the 1950s. And on the farm I regularly drove the farm Fergie, even with things like the haybob attached to turn the cut grass for hay etc. - or was it he was just short of a farm labourer! However, as a youngster and unlike Harvey I was lacking in the leg department and to drive the tractor I had to stand and shift my weight left to right to operate which ever peddle I needed! I am great believer that we should be taught to drive very early to get the ingrained skills, and not as late teenagers when full of testosterone-fuelled angst minus skill can lead to tragedies. So well done, and great video! Rob
