I especially love how honest you are and it is WONDERFUL when you go into the financial side of plant collecting. I appreciate how clear headed you are and you caution people not to spend beyond their means. My favorite videos are currently plant care and financial advice ones. Maybe that is an area you can branch out into as you diversify. Videos on how to plan ahead and buy our plant supplies in bulk. Low cost or DIY alternatives, etc.

LOVE your comments regarding Appreciating plants, and NOT having to OWN them all. I LOVE PLANTS!! I am owning the ones I love. Whether they are Rare or not. I have a Burle Marx flame (juvenile). It is getting big now and I love it. NOT because it is rare, I just want it in it's mature form. If it takes 5 years--fine. I refuse to spend thousands of dollars on plants. Your Big Plants look amazing and you inspire me everyday when I watch you videos!!!

My personal experience is that (some) humidifiers do help raise the air humidity. I have two, one of them doesn't wet the floor, whereas the other one needs to be placed on top of something so the mist doesn't reach the floor.
Also you might like to check out Hoya polyneura. Nice species with a hanging growth habit and beautiful leaves.

Love your videos. Funny about the oxalis - I’m in zone 6 in the US I put an oxalis in with my mixed outdoor flower planter years ago. Somehow the tuber or seeds got into my flower garden and now every spring they come up and have spread almost like a weed. They are in the east side near my house. Inside mine always go dormant as of course they do in my garden. But every spring they come back outside and have gotten bigger every year. Have you ever tried putting some me of the tubers directly in the ground. Your climate is so much warmer than mine- I bet they would just grow in the outside ground!

Completely agree with your answer about using dirty aquarium water even if you don't have that experience, it's about the principles! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! I also use aquarium water, and while it works great for most of my plants I noticed my adansonii was starting to show signs of nutrient deficiency, so I started fertilizing and now it's great!

Very nice video, Jan. Great to hear your thoughts and ideas on life and your journey. Thanks for sharing with us.
As far as collaborations go, I really didn't have anyone specific in mind. It would be cool to see a more in depth carnivore plant video nursery tour or orchid tour. (Some of our orchids are going into bloom now actually). Maybe a collaboration with the community somehow of a community garden where a plot of land is leased for people to garden veggies, flowers, herbs, whatever in raised beds, something like that with a small dog park to the side somewhere?
We have a Spiriti Sancti philodendron and we love it, but it grows foward away from the pole, which makes it very imbalanced.
We're relocating to Seattle from our house to an apartment..(under 700 sq.ft)..it's a really nice apartment, but the amount of plants we've had to unload has been ridiculous.
Anyhow, your videos are a very welcome part of my week, I truly enjoy watching you and what you're doing next.

Thanks for answering my question. My majestic I got as a small plant about 1.5 years ago. I have chopped and extended one time so far, the leaf size has stalled while other plants have continued to size up. What I'm going to try is to start multiple plants and grow them in different conditions and also try more fertilizer on the main plant. Ill keep trying, but if I cant get it to size up I will still love the plant as it is!

Just so you know there are 2 main types of humidifiers. Ultrasonic is the most common and the ones that make the visible stream of vapor and coat everything in mist and a chalky powder. Evaporative humidifiers simply blow air through a wicking filter with one end in water and are less effective in local increases in humidity but are better for raising the humidity overall over a longer time frame.

What you said about Hoyas is SO true 😆 I'm not a "fan" for the same reasons, I have 2 types of Hoya and would like another one, but my goal is for them to grow really bushy and big. Seeing people under water them and keep them in sample pots to bloom, I'm like f*ck the flowers 😆 I want lots of leaves. I have 2 plants by pot to have fuller and more leaves!
I love plants, but I have other interest too, if you do video about other subject I am sure this will be interesting too 🙃💛

Humidifiers are a must for very arid places like Boise, Idaho in the winter with 10% indoor humidity. 30% humidity in the summer. Humidity over 45% fosters molds and dust mites that are common allergens.
Roses were popular in Roman gardens as a medicinal and for visual beauty. The first Rosarian was Josephine Bonaparte who promoted the culture and hybridization of roses. In USDA Zones 3 - 7 most common fruits come from the Rose family. Yellow roses are the most frost tender and originated in China. There are no true blue roses because rose petals are acidic and most blue pigments like heliotropin aren't blue in acids. A black rose is actually dark red/maroon. One very special rose is Mutabilis in which the five petalled flowers start out as yellow, changing to pink, and finally to crimson
For a finicky plant that doesn't want to grow try spraying dilute fertilizer with micronutrients on the undersides of the leaves so it enters the plant bypassing the roots.

Sri Lanka is clean, peaceful, has nice beaches, the cost of living is not high and the people are friendly. It is literally a spice island. Cinnamon, tea, vanilla, coconuts and lots of other tropical plants are raised there.
Thailand is also a great place to visit. The cuisine is fantastic. Thai's raise a lot of aroids and tropical plants through tissue culture. Stay away from the seedier areas of Bangkok.

I know what you mean! There was an apartment shortage in Los Angeles in 1981 - 1982. I was looking for a two-bedroom apartment because we had a toddler and needed that second bedroom. My target market was San Pedro which is part of the Port of Los Angeles. The vacancy rate was 1% and this was before the Internet. I would get the morning edition of the newspaper, drive by apartments to check the exteriors, go to work, drive all the way back to San Pedro during lunch and check out apartments with a land lord if possible, drive back to work. I finally started just driving randomly through town looking for rental signs. After two months I found us a large two-bedroom apartment with underground parking. We rented there until we moved to near Portland, Oregon so we could afford to buy a house.

I have a question for you. I have a hybrid (warocqeanum x waterburyanum) and I really don't know what the problem is with that plant. It does not hold more than two leaves. As soon as it starts putting out a new leaf, the older leaf will start getting yellow spots and it turns yellow and falls as the new leaf is emerging. It has a sufficiently large root system, it is fed using a 7-4-10 at 500 ppm every time I water. It is potted in coconut husk chips, perlite #3 and charcoal and is watered 2x per week. Ambient temperature is 25-28 C at 55-65% RH. This is my only Anthurium that is doing this, all of the others are growing and holding leaves fine. (also to note, the leaf size increases with each new leaf it just won't hold more than 2) Any thoughts on what I can change?

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  7 місяців тому

South Africa is still going through a lot of troubles as due to the lingering effects of aparteid. Electric power is sporadic in some areas for example. If you want to roam in the back country get a guide who is armed to take you there. In the cities you shouldn't have as serious a problem with crime. The plant life there looks a lot like Souther California since a lot of South African plants were planted there. The country is warm and sunny.
