The little figurines are from the movie "Princess Mononoke". They are little forest spirits and show that the forest is healthy. Very cute.

The Sodiroi unfortunately lost the variegation eventually, it appears to be part of a lab produced batch and variegation was caused by stress. New leaves are bigger but no variegation, no fungal issues! I travel quite a bit so the auto watering works wonders for me.

Just to let you know I’ve had bags under my eyes many a day from watching your videos under the covers with headphones . The cling wrap works well for ones like me who don’t live in humid conditions. It also helps the roots make contact with the moss pole faster if that’s an issue too.
The figurines are kodama, tiny tree spirits from the film Princess Mononoke by Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki! Highly recommend his films!

Ida from sweden here. The low humidity is terrible for the skin, dry hands is a part of winter.
Even if the mosspoles where in the window, the sunlight is way to little for like 5 months of the year, so growlights it is.
An update will come, they have already grown so much in the last months, the siltepecana already needs an extention. My collection has also expanded a ton. I can only imagine how much they will have grown in a year!

My monsterra adonsonaii was also infected with mealy bugs when I got it from the store. I put it on poles and cleaned it changed to an Aroid mix and it is on the struggle bus!!!!! I’m trying to save her but she may need to be chopped back. I’m brand new to gardening so this is a super learning curve! Thanks for inspiring me to get started 😊
Hy Jan! About the beneficial bugs: I am from Austria and as you know, we have very cold winters sometimes but hot summers as well. So Autumn and Winter is the time, where the bugs try to find something warmer and crawl into our houses and start infesting our collections. So I would say the big temperature drops are the reason for our precautional bug management. Greetings!

One of your best uploads. Love your work and your passion. Your patience, positive comments and optimism are uplifting and very admirable. Have also started moss poles maybe on the last 6 months of last year because of you. Just finished cutting the poles- all of 24 pieces from one wire-mesh roll from Bunnings whilst I listened to your video last night. Continued the rest of this video this morning whilst having brunch on my working day-off. Thank you to all of you who contributed - I’m more inspired and learned a lot.

I love seeing other people growing their plants, it gives me drive to try and make my plants grow. I have quite challenging conditions in winter with as low as 5 %RH because of -30C outside and only an hour of daylight. On the other note, in summer the sun sets only for an hour and the growth can be marvellous. Among my 60ish potted plants, my personal favourite is my dracaena, which is older than me.

Loved this video. It inspired me to finally try putting some Cebu blue cuttings on moss pole. I bought the Grow Vertical poles months ago. It’s in Lechuza Pon so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. I have numerous climbing philodendrons that I can put on moss poles once I work out how to do it for my conditions. I’ve been a plant enthusiast for 20 plus years but only recently got into aroids.
I’m in the upper Blue Mountains and I have moss growing with the grass on my lawn. I could probably harvest it and use it but it takes a lot of time to pull it up and pick out the grass.

It's hard to refer to the zones outside the US because the zones are officially designated by the US Department of Agriculture. The USDA has a map of the hardiness zones, but it only covers the map of the US. One could calculate their zone by knowing yearly temperature patterns in their area and where that falls in the USDA zones, but I don't know if it's strictly meaningful in this context-the USDA hardiness zone is defined strictly by lowest temperature in your area. It does not factor in seasonal timelines, sunlight availability, or humidity.

love your videos. I always watch plant videos during my work time, I´m building pipettes for a liquid handling robot and can do that while learning about plants :D
After watching this I really want to send you some pics or a video of my little collection, just put 4 plants on baby poles to basically air layer them and chop them and then put multiple plants on a proper big pole. I have a adinsonii on a big pole, it was my first mosspole and is my only big one, just to try if I like it, soon it will be ready for it´s first chop and extend :D
One suggestion, for the videos where they are not talking themselves, maybe you could comment a bit more, at least mention the plant names or something, the long silence is a bit weird at times :D

Binge watching in the middle of the night. I'm planning to finally make a few SPG moss poles and repot my pothos and monstera deliciosas over Easter.

Final words: I live in a converted shed in the Adelaide Hills, cold dry winters, low light and bore water are my challenges! Yes, totally agree that Australia has a single climate 😂😂🤪

The US has wildly different climates and temps. No one can blame anyone for not knowing state by state how things are. For example my state has bright, hot, humid summers and cold winters with not much snow and some sun. One state over the winters are brutal, tons of snow and dark with short spans of warm summers. The state below me is hot almost all year with very mild winters, and high humidity. It can literally vary state to state. California is humid, warm and bright for most of it. The state next to it is mostly desert. The state above it gets very little sun, rains all the time, etc. It can be a challenge to figure out the right conditions for plants here. Especially in states like mine where the humidity swings wildly from season to season even inside. I love hearing helpful tips and seeing how other people take care of their plants. If not for our winters I could leave tropical plants outside here and they would thrive lol. In some states it's warm enough but they have no humidity like we do here.

The whole constantly trying to find faster and more efficient ways to do things is very much something I do too. It's almost like a game I play without realizing. It may be from my German side of the family/bloodline (I am half Irish half German).

I’m in zone 7. Bathurst here. Central tablelands, New South Wales. Cooler temperature and I’m currently building a cheap Bunnings greenhouse for inside because it gets frosty here and can potentially snow 😅. One day I’ll get the IKEA cabinet similar to what you have❤

Great video. Love the Oxalis in camera shot. I have the Triangularis and a few other varieties. Have you tried propergating from rhe stem. Put your fingers as low to the soil as you can and slowly pull until it breaks away from the corm in the soil. Place in water just covering the base of the leaf. Takes a while and not every one roots but keep trying. Love ❤️ from Western Australia

13:30 Probably minute pirate beetles/Orion beetles, Super effective against thrips, One of those bugs kills like +40 thrips a day i belive and their offspring eats the larvae in the soil too.
I had thrips on my plants a while back but bought a pack of these beetles, After that I haven't seen a single thrip and once they fed on them all, they kind of die out.

Hi to Sydney and greetings from the Czech Republic, thanks for all your sharings, passions, great tips. You inspired me to create my first moss polls, I extended the first one today. One simple and maybe silly question: how are you doing it with bottles to water them, i did one hole into the cap but once it runs out of air it stops the water to go out from the bottle. Thanks for your advice in advance, Petra

Everyone talks about how to supplement light; supplementing heat is pretty obvious, but it’s not as easy to supplement humidity. And if it is …. Nobody has told me an easy way to do so. Would love to hear more about how people supplement humidity for a big plant setup
Humidifiers would be the straight forward answer. I personally have so many moss poles that the water evaporating from them boost the humidity :)
Well I just learned something, I thought Mamei was a climber, it’s on a pole and is climbing beautifully! And each leaf is bigger than the previous one! I’m not telling her she’s really a crawler…she might get confused. Can’t believe I didn’t realize this, I feel so dumb now…😜
2:00:56 Canada uses Celsius, so I'm guessing that's what she's using. But it doesn't actually matter because -40C = -40F exactly.
with my two syngoniums (Mojito and Variegata) - I have my grown on a moss pole. They've reached 2m now, have huge leaves and the roots are almost as thick as my fingers. As for Syngonium Red Arrow - it is about 1m now but the leaves dont get any bigger and it looses leaves all the time.
That slow release of water to a dehydrated pole makes sense to me, if I pour water straight through heavily it just soaks the substrate at the bottom, I came to the realization that slow release will moisten the moss more so
My Decirsivas are growing at a snails pace!! I’ve had the plant for a year, I chopped and propped and overgrown hanging basket of it and stuck one on a plank as an experiment…. Only potted them up this last winter, not much growth yet
The little figurines in people’s plants are little tree spirits in Studio Ghibli’s Japanese animation movies, they glow in the dark

I actually have my Birkin on a mospole for almost a year. It climbed around 20 cm high and don´t show leaf upsize:) But it root into the pole and I think it has a advantage from this. Maybe it will upsize for me this summer:)

Hi! I have a little question but I'm not sure where it's best to ask, so maybe under that tips & tricks video is ok. I have a pretty basic Monstera deliciosa that I need to repot. It was from a baby propagation from a friend. I have 3 stem in 1 pot for now, can I repot 2 of those together with a moss pole to have a fuller plant in the futur or is it better to have only 1 stem in a pot. Thank you!! Learning so much from your videos keep them coming! ( 40F from Montreal ( Quebec/Canada) already went to Sydney ones, beautiful city!
I have bunch of Monsteras, cacti and succulents. That's because they are easy to take care of and don't die dramatically like other inferior plants. I hate future garbage. Rarely I try a plant again after it died on me. Philodendron Micans is my top philodendron right now because never gave me any trouble. I grow it in sun, in shade, even in dog food container without drainage hole.

My marble Queen on a moss pole is sizing up really nicely, BUT the variegation is going back to just solid green. I give it plenty of light next to a big East window, supplemented by Mother™️ grow light. Humidity between 60-80%. Do I have to chop it back or will the variegation return?

To reply to your question about what these little figurines are that you’ve seen around on the internet: they’re forest spirits from a studio Ghibli movie! Their movies portray nature really beautifully and peacefully so I personally think it suits the feeling my plants give as well. They’re glow in the dark so that’s pretty fun too 😌
These figures are from Ghibli Studio anime films where they represent the tree spirits (named Kodama), the offspring of old trees. They typically glow in the dark and symbolize a healthy forest when present.

Something Ive been wondering; why does there seem to be less leaves on moss poles? Is it because the leaves are larger so less are produced? Is it possible to have large & leafy plants on moss poles? Also leaves on all sides: do you just manipulate the stems with nodes around the pole?
Don’t rhink that’s actually true. You’re probably comparing a lush hanging basket with 5-6 shoots to a single shoot on a pole. And yes you can grow as many shoots up a pole as you want to make it lush:)

I have learnt i really dislike keeping moss poles. Would anyone know of any good alternatives to then in Australia. Was thinking wood planks. But not sure what type of wood to use.
Try iron bark wood :) but be aware that once your plant has outgrown the plank you’re kinda ‘stuck’ 🤷🏻♂️ but better than no plants at all, right ?:P
Good question. I’m exploring options myself. I’m from North Queensland. I’m thinking of untreated pines from Bunnings but also thinking of wires wrapped in jute ropes. I’m visualising for the purpose of support and aesthetics.

Can you settle a debate I have had with someone? I put my Ring of Fire on a moss pole because I saw yours on one.. someone told me it’s not a climber. I notice yours isn’t on a moss pole now.. 😅 or is it? I can’t really tell
It is on a pole, and it is a climber, but climbs with very very small internodal spacing so you don’t really need a pole :)

I have learned while most people enjoy talking about scars, some find it quite offensive. I have many scars and actually enjoy telling their stories when someone is brave enough to ask...
You're all good ! It's a scar from when I had a mole removed when I was a teenager
