That is harassment, and a probity issue. This person’s medical ethics is questionable to me. You handled that very well.

I can see this being either 1) a supreme veteran radiologist who is truly irritated and lashing out in their "get off my lawn young whippersnapper" cranky-old-person sensibilities, or 2) an insecure older radiologist who overreacts to anything which reminds them of their weaknesses. Either way, they don't seem like pleasant people or anyone I would like to work with. I think you handled it well.

Age is a not a criteria either for being either good or confident at something. Something career paths change and even more senior rads are looking for advanced training. I agree it's more a personal character thing.
Agewise I don't think he was more then 3-5 years older than me lol.
I guess I just look young lol

You have an angel's patience. He was definitely a troll. I would most likely give him his own treatment. :D
Continue with your amazing work, you're great radiologist and teacher. :)
Also... I think I have a clue why he worked in over 8 university hospitals. xD

It’s not either about how long you’ve been practicing (like 20 years vs 5 years), or how many flowship you have, It’s all about how well you can teach others, how much you care about helping others with your knowledge.
Dr. Agten, your illustrations and visual graphics are unique, amazing and superuseful.
Being a long time experienced one is so different from being a genius!
Being a hostile mean one is different from being a thoughtful generous one.
Go ahead, I’ve learned a lot from you (really a big help in my career) and am looking forward to seeing more. Thanks!

Online conversations without verifying who the others are, must have a one way check valve to only help others, and shut out all negative influences, to be safe from getting psychologically manipulated or influenced to stop doing good helping others.
The reason is, that helping others will eventually cause enemies of someone helped to start undermining the help being given to that person, using such negative influence to discourage continuation of help to others. This is only one of many motives driving the abundance of negative influencing conversations.

I only have little experience with MSK radiology and I find your videos great and very helpful!
But in general, writing to someone, anyone, if they need help, this help offering comes from a superiority position, because one can help other only if they know better or are somehow in a higher position, so it can make someone feel embarrassed or belittled. Make you can just rephrase in your message and just write that there is this class and if they are INTERESTED. It is one thing to write "contact me if you are interested in a msk online fellowship" and something else to ask "do you need help?", it sounds like speaking to a little child who needs help. Also admitting needing "help" can be problematic for some people, so this formulation I think it can make you lose some potential clients. So yes, I think there is a problem with the word "help". Good luck and I am waiting for new videos from you!

You did everything right! Thanks for your videos and your way of approaching it! Titles don't make you a good radiologist! ;)
Doing radiology is based on reporting experience! To think that only a scientific career can make you a good radiologist is very unreflected! There are many excellent radiologists in max. hospitals outside an university environment. There are many out there who still don't understand that!
Offering help is always a given and should always be accepted independent of experience! Narcissism, low self esteem and built up dependence will never be the solution to deal with other colleagues! Times change, deal with it!
He could show his expertise to the world by making videos himself!
Never tell other people what they have to do or not; it is their own effort and passion to perform!
Looking forward to more quality content! Thanks again!

Ego and arrogance in medicine ( not a hard science) is the fastest way to disaster. Humility is the key regardless of worthless titles and accreditation , PhDs, experience etc. Especially in radiology where you can get clowned really easy. You handled it well. I guess he was against monetising/commodifying your services which is a long discussion but he handled it really bad with a huge chip on his shoulder.
Remember. Humility. No matter how good you think you are the universe will find a way to humble you

Hey Doc! Thanks for sharing that. I salute your entrepreneurial efforts and its something no doctor should be ashamed of. Keep it up. I would take that feedback from this encounter and modify the message sent to connections to be more personal. The message you send is very generic and can come as an insult for some. For example, end it with best wishes instead with bw! Start it with the name of the new connection. Tell them something that you found interesting in their own work and that you think your course or service will help them do better. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Likely a narcissist. Knows exactly who you are and what you've achieved but can't admit it. Needed narcissistic supply by trying to put you down and feel superior. Deep down this individual is highly insecure. Best identify these types early and dis engage in dialogue.

Hey Chris, I love your videos and appreciate all the tips you share. And that other radiologist was down right rude and not even worth interacting with. However If I may just add one comment and I mean this with all the best intention-the linked in message that you have automated can be misinterpreted as “selling” something-I have seen your videos and understand the person you are and so I know you are just trying to help by highlighting what you can offer-but to someone who doesn’t know you -it can “seem” commercial. By tweaking the language to something like” my passion is to connect and help any radiologist at any stage of their career come to love and enjoy msk radiology “-something on those lines, then i think this will be avoided in the future. Take it from me as I have done something similar from my end with helping international radiologists from other countries that don’t have msk fellowships and it has gone done very well. But you are a fantastic msk rad and you have much to share. So a massive thank you.

I think that informal communication by text in the professional setting is going to lack appropriate intonation, because it is typically seen as unprofessional to use emojis and people rarely elaborate in this type of divulgence- it’s easy to miscommunicate!
Posting that conversation shows just how poorly communication via text between medical professionals can cause a host of issues. It’s an important dialogue to have. I think you’ve handled yourself well by not being insulting back. It’s a shame that there is so much ego in medicine and science. This is ill-becoming of a senior radiologist or any other specialist or doctor, for that matter. These attitudes begin in medical school where the superiors treat the med students and interns and even residents poorly due to rank. Not only is it demeaning for a superior to speak to an inferior doctor or student (I understand that this is not the case with you, Dr. Agten, as you are a specialist yourself) and can cause ill feelings, but it also fosters a poor learning environment for everyone. There should always be an atmosphere that allows an openness to discuss medicine without fear of retribution or humiliation. This definitely needs to change in medicine.
I believe policies and practices in medical schools and hospital systems in general have to change, because students and doctors work too many hours. This is how accidents and deaths occur.
We need to have these conversations in medicine and science and issues like you’ve shown us here is just one way that can severely hinder best practices. Thanks for bringing up this very important topic so that level-headed discussions can ensue. ❤
