    Great video. I often have to explain to my mrs that I’m not being overly harsh to my dog when I telling him off, he pushes shit all the time. I say, I’m not telling off the other dog like this, and she thinks it’s because I’m being mean, I love both my dogs equally. It’s just my younger dog doesn’t have an inbetween. It’s all or nothing. And being nicely nicely doesn’t do anything with him, whereas I know if I ever corrected my other dog in this way he’d just shut down and never trust me again, but then he’s never ever been close to getting a raised voice from me.

    Thank you for an honest answer on this. I'm sure that there are many, many dog owners who can relate. As someone who is working on getting my boy to lose his interest in sheep, I certainly can!

    Wow, this is a great video. Wonderful explanation. I'll be checking out your other videos. I'm specifically looking for something I can share with my husband while our six month old puppy is learning to walk politely on leash. I, myself, am open to pointers too. I am by no means a dog training expert.

    Great video once again Charlie. I do have a question for you though. Something was said to me yesterday which was apparently said by a gundog owner who has never met me or my puppy. Aparently, neither she nor I will "ever be good enough", "hasn't even been to a shoot" and "would never be invited to a shoot anyway". This is a man, dissing me (female) and my not quite 11 month old Gordon Setter x GWP puppy who so far, has done basic gundog puppy training (they dissed my trainer too!). Both breeds in my puppy's genetic makeup are known to be slow to mature both physically and mentally, but I get the feeling that man thinks she isn't "good enough" a) because she hasn't been to a shoot and b) because he's a "dog snob" who looks down on anything other than pedigree spaniels or labradors? Would he have the same opinion if I was male? If so, does that mean misogyny is rife in the gundog community? My mental health isn't great at the best of times so this has really got to me. This has made me feel the gundog community is cliquey, judgemental and misogynistic and is not welcoming to newcomers. So what if my puppy is a cross? Her grandparents and beyond are/were all working gundogs from British and European working lines, both in the Gordon and GWP. She has a natural aptitude to want to work and is highly receptive to training. This one remark has made me doubt that the gundog community is a community where I would be welcomed into 😟

    Love this. These days people are too afraid to tell their dogs off. I can’t catch my dog when he runs off after other dogs. When I get to him I tell him off and the other dog owners look at me and say ‘awww he just wants to play’ do you think it’s too late to tell him off once I catch up?? Thanks 😵‍💫

    Hi Charlie and team
    Question, my 19month old chocolate lab just escaped the garden and went into the nearby field and ‘played’ with the sheep. I got her back and neighbour is very good about it, I think nothing has come to grief but what do I do? Despairing that she will try it again at some point and I’ll have to rehome her as we live in the country. Am doing a lot of training otherwise and she’s doing reasonably well except when there are distractions. Any thoughts would be welcome. Love your videos and guidance by the way, they have helped enormously.

    • @missbabybiker
      @missbabybiker Місяць тому +1

      Find out exactly where she escaped and make it more secure so that she can't get out. "Playing" with sheep can lead to the sheep aborting lambs, dying themselves through the stress of having a predator (dog) running freely among them or ultimately, your dog being shot dead by the farmer.

    • @evasby4086
      @evasby4086 Місяць тому +1

      Why would you rehome her? Get your garden fenced off ! Training is only ever complete once the dog listens while there are distractions - keep up the training, I know it is not easy! You could also seek professional help.

      @@missbabybiker Thank you. Well aware of the possible consequences which is why I’m so concerned. Our garden perimeter is challenging to fence completely and I thought I had it sorted ok but clearly not. We will have to review it.

    • @missbabybiker
      @missbabybiker Місяць тому

      @@margaretdenning2234 Walk the perimeter and look thoroughly for anywhere your pup could jump over, dig under or push through. If she has dug her way out, secure some chicken netting/stock fencing across that area and make sure you bury the wire fencing by at least a foot to 18 inches. Same if you have a section of hedging - secure chicken wire/stock fencing in front of the hedging. What might seem inpenetrable to us, a determined dog can easily push their way through. If she has jumped out somewhere, you can use chicken wire/stock fencing across that area by securing it to strong posts, double height of wire if needed but make sure your dog can't squeeze through between the bottom line and top line of fencing wire. Your only other option is to not let her out into the garden unsupervised and without a lead on. A nuisance, I know, but you need to keep your dog (and any nearby livestock) safe. Good luck.

    I so glad you put this out I’ve got a 13 week old GSP and everyone is always talking about positive reinforcement, which I agree with, but if the pups right in the act of doing something super negative, how am I to positively get him to stop that behaviour, I’ve started lowering my voice with a firm no, not yelling, but it works he stopps.

    Hello Charlie, would love to hear your ideas on dogs in kennels howling when they are left behind or bitches in season? I can put up with a bit of barking now and then but howling comes across as a fingers up to me.

    While a lot of the advice on this channel is very good, I understand that the dogs featured here are primarily kept in external kennels and trained specifically as gun dogs. I’d assume that most viewers, like me, keep their dogs in a home environment. As a result, although the channel does provide valuable insights into dog behaviour, it sometimes misses the mark on challenges unique to a typical household setting-like managing pets around children, cats, and smaller spaces without expansive fields. For me, the content is about 50% useful and 50% less applicable to everyday life.

    • @donaldtriumph1682
      @donaldtriumph1682 Місяць тому +6

      What are the issues in a typical household with a small garden and children. The same rules apply you just haven’t worked it out yet. No challenge is as unique as you think you just have to think about it a different way. Most of the problems are the owners not having a clue what to do. Which is the owners fault not this channel.
