I really liked how you explained the different ways it can turn on and why it is best to tap the dome light. Never thought of using the dome light! Great video explanation!

Thanks Doug. This is the first truck I have ever owned and within 2 months of ownership, I knew I needed bed lights, but wanted it to be foolproof. I.e. Not forgetting to turn them off and also have them off when I need them off (tailgate down)

I’ve used 87a and 87 to reverse polarity of something ie abs lights when I swapped a different year cluster into one of my vehicles

Thanks for the Video! I have a 2021 RAM 1500. I'm connecting my lights to the dome light just like you did. I did the T-Tap at the back tail light.
I made a new diagram for you. I'll try to email it to you.

How did it work out? I also have a 21 ram. It’s a classic model but looking to tie it into my cargo light. Curious if you tapped into that and if you have a diagram available?

FYI, the relay in this case is controlling a higher amperage circuit. The voltage is the same

I know this is 6 mos old, but still. Amazon sells a Wago t-tap connector that cuts in for you and does not require soldering. They are more secure than butt connectors. Butt connectors can do really well. But there are applications where they may be more of a headache and liability. The wago connectors do not leave as much of an exposed area as a butt connector. They also are less of a headache than solder and shrink, even though solder and shrink are usually the best in terms of strength, reliability and clearance IE you can stick it in a smaller area and keep wire management neat and clean.

I'm looking to add truckbed lights but was going to wire the lights directly to the dome light. What is the benefit of using the relay setup? So it has its own power source/fuse?

Thank you for the informative video. I don’t know much about relays but you explained it very well.
One question: Is it possible to have the bed lights also on a manual switch that can be turned on regardless of the dome light status?
    Just curious, thanks again

Yes, you can absolutely do that! In that case, a manual switch replaces the dome light wire.

Sorry - I meant to ask if I wire exactly as you did to trigger off the dome lights could there also be a manual on/off switch that will power lights on that works independently? (So lights may be turned on if doors are still closed?)
