This is exactly the struggle I’ve been having with myself since I started CrossFit about 4 months ago. Never mind the like button, where is the love button. Thank you so much for talking about this. I’ve done strength training for 1.5 years (love it,) and decided to try CF as a new challenge. Now I do CF 4 days a week and strength training 1 day a week because I want to ensure I’m actually getting stronger and working on what I need to work on. Every day I ask myself, am I on the right path for my goals, and my goals are very simple, stay consistent, get stronger. I’m going to head to your links now. Thank you again, you have no idea. ❤
I appreciate you talking about this Kristi Eramo O'Connell!! So many people in CrossFit act as if they re-invented the wheel. Traditional weight lifting movements ARE TRADITIONAL because they work. You can bet your last dollar, people like Toomey and Fraser spend plenty of time pushing weights around!
Kristi, Thank you for addressing this topic that I often hear around my local box. My local box has started incorporating more bodybuilding in the skill portion of their classes before the WOD and I love seeing it. I agree completely with you that bodybuilding has a role in CrossFit, especially as accessory work. I started in bodybuilding well before I started CrossFit and I feel it has helped me improve the imbalances that I had in my hips and legs by training unilateral movements. I noticed this has had a big positive impact on my box jumps and other movements that I am working on mastering. I have been very open-minded to even experimenting with martial arts and yoga to help me with the flexibility and mobility limitations that I am working on. Love all your passion for wellness and your sharing of your knowledge.
So much yes!!! I started with power lifting before I discovered Crossfit and I feel like it helped me jump into the Crossfit quicker. And I love feeling strong after a good lifting workout and the different rush I get from both PL and CF. Love your content - open, honest and so helpful!!
Totally agree, I started incorporating bodybuilding a couple of months ago, it’s really helped my CrossFit as my strength in certain areas has really shot up buy lifting much heavier for less reps.
I'm so glad Kristi made this video. The idea that we're not allowed to spend time lifting weights in isolation because the modern gym bro culture is the only perception of "bodybuilding" most people tend to see if they didn't start at the commercial gym down the street. Understanding muscle anatomy and physiology makes you an all around better athlete.
Very insightful, as well as allowing us to reach goals (pull ups etc) doing specific upper bodybuilding with my coach has improved my right shoulder health enormously, I dislocated it years ago and even my chiropractor is amazed at the improvement. I can even sleep on that side now 😂
Amazing video. The bodybuilding community has looked down on the CrossFit community for a whole. I did the same as a bodybuilder for years but now I utilize both methods for training
Thank you! love your channel. This is exactly what Marcus filly doing with is FBB program. IMO, it's great for preparing your body to functional movements but if you're looking for mass go traditionally bodybuilding and use mostly machines and be consistent with your nutrition.
That's exactly what my cross fit gym does. It's a mix of everything, that's why i don't understand why people look down on cross fit, while we have many commen movments. I'm a beginner & my goal is not to compete, my goal is to be fit, increase mobility, build muscles & lose fat. I find that cross fit is a mix of cardio & weight training in an intense group training, which is fun & motivating. That's exactly what i want, I'm not training to compete or to be a body builder, not everyone wants that.
I always learn so much by watching your videos. I love that the info is very objective and not persuasive. For a beginner Crossfitter (almost a year) who goes 2-3 times a week, where can I fit in alternative workouts beyond WODs? I'd love to incorporate bodybuilding, but I'm concerned that I will overdo it and not achieve my CrossFit goals by not allowing time to rest. Thanks Kristi!
Love you guys🥰 Patrick, those were beautiful toes to bars. For someone so tiny you are a beast. I wished I could do thrusters like you girl. Those are my weak points. Handstands as well. I needed to see this. I needed some motivation. ❤
Thank you much for another awesome video 😊… Watching your videos helps me become a good athlete. I did have a question about the programs. I wanted to know what would be best for me the body building accessory program or the strength accessory program? I have been in CrossFit for about 5 years.. but these last 2 years I was able to find a forever box home and dedicated a lot of time on my weakness. I know I need to build more strength in order to get better at muscle ups. And I want to look my best by adding some definition and seeing that tone.. Thank you again for all you.
No need to over complicate things. If you are not likely to be in the competitive camp, the benefit of bodybuilding over CrossFit is that you will at least look as good as your body will allow, which is great. As for the workouts, bodybuilding can be much, much less intense and damaging than CrossFit. And on rest days, you can do some chill cardio like walking, cycling, elliptical or jogging just to keep your heart health sufficient. I grant that CrossFit can certainly be done without damaging joints etc. but just like power lifting, the moves are often fast and complex which brings a degree of risk. Where as with bodybuilding, the moves can be done in a slow and controlled way such that if any sharp pain comes up, you can stop, adjust, wait etc. before injuring yourself. Obviously this is nothing but an opinion, and I really think people should do what makes them happy.
true there is a sepersation between weight training and crossfit. body building is not similasr to crossfit as bodybuilders are training to increase size and shape of a particular muscle and able to pose- they tend to do this in isolated exercises. where crossfit is muscularity but more so the body's ability to recover from an activity. yes activity and not so much an exercise, as crossfit tends to be a movement pattern and not so much the isolation of a movement lat pull ups. is done in isolation kipping is not utilized as it adds a muscle that is not the core reason for doing the exercise. yes weight training can improve crossfit movement, and can be of great benefit to reduce injury. good content1
I’ve seen the best gymnastics “gains” by focusing on shoulder “body building” aka really good accessory additions. I don’t know why people are opposed to body building in CrossFit. Maybe because they joined Crossfit to not join a globogym? It’s totally necessary to get better. Great vid like always.
Hi Kristi, so excited about this! Seems like exactly what I’ve been looking for. 🥳 Does the accessory program include the movement that we see you doing in this video? Is there like a sample week or session available?
I think the “bodybuilding” nose turning is to the thought of cut off shirts, a lot of “bro”, speedos, tans, oil, and gear. 100% behind you on strength training for better performance.
Have y'all ever considered attending a college wrestling practice? I have never seen any other fitter athlete than a college heavyweight wrestler. Fifty years ago, I wrestled at 235 lbs., had a 38 inch waist, 54 in chest, 32 inch inseam and 32 inch thigh circumference. There is no better exercise than pushing and pulling on someone that s just as strong as you are. I used to eat 10,000 calories a day just to maintain muscle mass and strength. Any less and I started losing weight and strength. Back then I used to bench press 450 lbs and sometimes run the ten mile morning run in under an hour. That is ten sub-six minute miles in a row. Y'all missing a great workout that works aerobic and anaerobic at the same time.
We have never been to one but are very familiar with the training. It is a brutally hard sport, and our members with college and highshool wrestling backgrounds always fair very well in crossfit!
I have done Bodybuilding, Powerlifting, Strongman and CrossFit. The truth is CrossFit shuns those sports because of PEDs. Like Momma Donna, I do CrossFit for longevity and community. I could not care less about my ranking in CrossFit.
She makes good points here. But being the odd person that I am, my biggest takeaway was that if they ever do a live action MHA movie, Kristi is prepaires to play Mirko.
Im too old to do any crossfit specific moves, so I just do my bodybuilding moves with a heavy but lighter weight in a circuit. I like working cardio and strength at the same time. Bodybuilding alone to me is boring.
Have you seen the series where they designed diverse range of strength challenges and invited a CrossFitter, bodybuilder, weightlifter and powerlifter for the competition? Can you also do a video on the strength challenges with other female powerlifters and bodybuilders?
Maybe if we don‘t call it bodybuilding. CrossFit and Bodybuilding are two different sports with different goals. I like „bodybuilding“ stuff since westside barbells make the strongest lifters in the world and they also do „bodybuilding“ stuff. But that‘s not Bodybuilding. For me it‘s isolated work to target weak links, at lower metabolic despense and less risk for injury. Bodybuilding means target muscles by look not by function, and also cutting and bulking for lean musclemass, and not to fuel activity/high effort. Different sport. (Westside also used Powerlifting for Bodybuilders; Seitzer, and Marcus Filly uses Crossfit for Bodybuilding.) Weights, exercises and repshemes are tools. …
Do you think coaches/gyms should have built in time for accessory work or strength training?? How does Polaris do it? Maybe you can do a day in the life of one of your staff members and emphasize that a CF Games Athlete knows best when owning/operating a gym. Just an idea. Thanks for the information! #IBEXtraining
We have 2 days per week at Crossfit and Polaris that have bodybuilding accessory style strength work before the wod, and we have it every day as accessory work after the workout for those who have time to also get that in. and i like that idea!

Really good explanation of differences and benefits! TY. 👏💪🏽
She is a beast & soo motivational!!! Love her!!!
THIS! Love the message in this.
I love body building! It’s really great for an active recovery day or a day I have lower energy.
Those back to the wall toes to bar look like no joke. Great content and something different than the typical CF vlog. Thanks.
This is a really intelligent point of view. I love how you can see all the positives : )

That sounded complicated but informing, anything embracing the lifestyle of an athlete is the best stuff ever though dude
Cricket, Muay Thai, MMA, Boxing, Arrow shooting, gun shooting, trap skeet shooting, football, futball, tennis, volleyball, bball, badminton, bowling, rugby, CrossFit, olifting, gymnastics, track and field, circuit training, all that and more broski

I would agree with that for sure!!
